4 Johan Lindeberg believes his decision to return to the brand which bears his name is like going back to an old flame. The Swede founded J.Lindeberg in 1996, left in 2007, but recently signed a twoyear deal to return as creative consultant. Now, the 58-year-old is as ambitious as ever and is determined to take golf fashion on a new journey all over again. He admits it will be a real challenge to return to familiar territory but he is certain he can make it work. Lindeberg said: “I never thought of going back. It was tough to leave a brand with my name when you think about your family and your daughter.

“And then you pass by the store every day in New York. “And I’ve been so inspired the last few years, I never really thought about it. “I know it’s very hard to go back to an old relationship, it’s not easy.

“WHEN I CREATED J.LINDEBERG, I DIDN’T LISTEN TO ANYONE.” “Also I know that from a personal level, when it comes to women. It’s very hard to go back to an old relationship! “There are good examples and then there are bad examples when it comes to re-joining.” It’s not just the obvious emotional attachment where Lindeberg will be tested. He is clearly searching for the right tone and feels the brand lost some of its direction in recent times. Lindeberg said: “I think J.Lindeberg have done quite well from a business sense but I think they lost their soul and energy a bit. That’s what I hope to bring back but it’s hard if you listen to too many people and dilute your look – it isn’t a good thing. “When I created J.Lindeberg, I didn’t listen to anyone. Some people say I didn’t listen enough but if I listened, I would never have created J.Lindeberg at all – people said it was impossible.

“If you start to listen to everyone else you start to be deluded and lose the voice and I think that’s a trap most brands go into. “I think it’s too many things in too many directions. Today, I think it is important to be clear in fashion. More clarity is needed.”

“THE ESTABLISHMENT HAS ALWAYS OWNED GOLF SOMEHOW.” But, perhaps, most exciting is that Lindeberg seems intent on pushing the boundaries of what is considered as acceptable on a golf course. He said: “I like what Rickie Fowler is doing with the high-top shoes and so on. “I think we need to relax it a little bit and not be so intense. The establishment has always owned golf somehow. “So maybe we need to bring more jeans into golf. “You can play golf in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt if you want. “I’m a person who doesn’t like it when it’s too structured – I get nuts. “I played golf with Jesper (Parnevik) but I was so hot in this turtle neck and I said ‘no-one is watching me, can I take it off and play in my t-shirt?’ “Everyone looked at me like ‘no, you can’t!’ “I feel trapped in that environment and it’s time to open it up somehow! “I mean take the Standard Spa Hotel, in Miami. If every golf club looked like that, it would be very cool you know – people would want to go there. It would be like a Soho club, but with a golf club connected. “I don’t want a campaign to be sloppy, like a stupid protest. But let’s just relax it a bit and make it cool. “Our strength is that we’re a fashion brand. From a fashion angle, we can bring in ideas from fashion, that’s how it started.”
