How Do You Solve a Problem Like St Mary’s? provide signs of high status medieval buildings within the area. The renowned Pevsner attributed the site of the priory in the adjacent parish of Lea, though this has subsequently been disproved. Decorated period around 1330. After the dissolution, St Mary’s gradually fell into decline and disrepair. During this period the tower, choir and chancel together with the roof slowly collapsed into ruin and decay. In 1630 a major reconstruction is known to have taken place, however, only the nave of the existing church was saved, reordered, and given a new lower twin-gabled roof, which explains the curious chapellike appearance we see today. Interesting features include a superb Gothic baptismal font, a fine Jacobean pulpit complete with tester and desk, 17th century pews and an unusual altar baldacchino. This remnant of history in our pleasant and quiet backwater of rural Lincolnshire has many more stories yet to be revealed. We certainly need quite a few more pieces to complete the jigsaw puzzle - to try and solve
