The Royal British Legion sponsors the annual POPPY APPEAL and collections will be made between: 28th October and 11th November 2017 Remembrance Sunday is 12th November As I sit down to write this year’s message on the 31st July it occurs to me that it is a significant day in British and indeed World history. It is the 100th anniversary of the opening day of the battle of Passchendaele. An infamous WW1 battle which lasted until 6th November 1917 during the course of which it is estimated that allied nations lost in the order 330,000 dead. Unbelievably that is an average of over 3000 per day or 21000 per week, 100,000 per month and I know

Autumn Reflection 2017 Dear Friends As I write this, the house is filled with the mouth-watering scent of stewing blackberries and apples. It’s the sort of aroma which almost makes me look forward to cold days and dark evenings. At the same time, from the kitchen window, I can see the buddleia flowers, full of butterflies. It’s late summer, the time of year when seasons begin to merge and vivid memories fill my head. Memories of wearing a full school uniform for the first time on a very hot early September day, memories of Goose Fair (essential for anyone who’s grown up in Nottingham), bonfire

night and Christmas are all brought to mind in glorious detail with the scent of cooking apples. This time of year is rich in significance because it is so full of memories and activity, which mark the passing of the year and the passage of our lives At harvest, we celebrate the miracle of the seasons, the skill and work of our farmers and the provision of food from the earth. At Remembrancetide, we remember with thanksgiving those who have given their lives in war and at All Souls-tide, we remember those whom we love and see no more. At Christmas, we remember and
celebrate the birth of Jesus. Indeed, this time of year is so full of remembrance that it is sometimes called a thin time of year, because heaven and earth feel a lot closer together and our past seems to catch up with our present. It can be challenging because not all memories are happy ones and the pain of losing someone we love is not easily soothed, so I am glad that Christmas crowns this season. The birth of Jesus, God with us, brings

Special thanks also go out to the attending vets from Tower Equine and the team at the charity’s Animal Reception Centre for their resilience and dedication when nursing Emerald.
