Fenton Seed Swap On a rather breezy Saturday in May Joanna and Scott Read of Fenton hosted a very successful seed swap party. Soon the garden was full of tender plants and vegetables waiting to be swapped. An array of cakes and different teas were enjoyed, whilst chatting and exchanging gardening tips. Eventually everyone went home with cars and arms full of different types of plants, plugs and seeds. What a great way of gaining more plants

countryside and its inhabitants and we make a range of items for wildlife to live in and feed from. We also make bespoke products that include fairy doors (each has its own address!), homes, bird feeders and furniture for your

use, wherever possible, local and natural materials. We recycle, upcycle and create from new. Our favourite materials include: reject scaffolding planks, old fencing, forestry and garden refuse, factory waste and anything we think that we can put to good use - I’ve even been known to empty a bottle so we could use it for a bird feeder- all for the company you understand! At the moment, we have an exciting new project working on an exhibition that we have been asked to take part in at Doddington Hall’s Summer of Imagination.

garden. If there is something you have in mind and want it creating then get in touch. Currently we are very fortunate to be able to sell Groovy Garden items in various places, Ellicar Gardens near Gringley on the Hill; The Bottle and Glass in Harby; Spinney Farm at Carr Lane and The Christmas Shop at Hall Farm, Collingham Road. Very soon we will have some Groovy Garden items for sale at Doddington Hall in the Gatehouse. Each piece we create is different. They are all handmade and this can sometimes be

reflected in what you see. We try and keep to a natural wood finish, but when we do use paint we limit it to five colours, and use Farrow and Ball. If you’re looking for that perfect something then perhaps we are not for you. If you like the idea that we have created something from materials previously thought of as not useful and would have been thrown away, then you might like our ideas... We are on Facebook and regularly show what we are trying out at that moment in time and let you know what craft events we are going to attend. We also have a website www.ggco.co.uk and you can contact us via both of these or email me at: pauline@ggco.co.uk

It starts on 23rd July 2017 and runs until the end of the summer holidays. We have made some beautiful fairy homes and some rather lovely bug homes, all of which will be for sale

The Vikings at Torksey The Viking armies that invaded Britain in the ninth century were far larger than had previously been realised, according to academic research that forms the basis for a groundbreaking virtual reality project. A major exhibition at the Yorkshire Museum, staged in partnership with the British Museum, draws on new research by the universities of York and Sheffield. According to Professor Dawn Hadley, one of the codirectors of the universities’ project at the site of a Viking winter camp, archaeologists and historians had thought that the invading Viking armies numbered in the low hundreds. But archaeological work at the camp on the River Trent at Torksey, Lincolnshire, suggested otherwise. “Our work at Torksey has revealed a camp 55 hectares in area, the size of some 75 football pitches,” Hadley said. “This reflects an army which, along with women, children, and crafts workers and traders, must have been several thousand strong, larger than most towns of the period.”

Public Spaces Protection Order Additional measures to tackle environmental crime and antisocial behavior in Lincolnshire are to be rolled out over the coming weeks. A new Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) is set to be introduced to help tackle areas of West Lindsey that generate high levels of littering and dog fouling complaints. West Lindsey have recently recruited a new Community Enforcement Officer – Luke Thomson. When questioned on the challenges the job offers Luke replied: “This new job role has numerous challenges involving all areas of antisocial behaviour within the West Lindsey community – varying from getting abandoned vehicles removed from the

Thorney Open Church Times Are Changing

From September we will be opening St Helen’s Church, Thorney each Wednesday afternoon from 2.30 - 4pm for quiet prayer and contemplation. This is instead of being open each Thursday. We hope this will not be inconvenient for our regular attenders and look forward to welcoming newcomers. This will mean that a church is open in our East Trent group of churches every day of the week, either for an act of worship, or for quiet prayer. Just inside church you will find cards on a table on which you can write prayer requests which can be left for us to use in our services. There are candles which can be lit and there are suggested prayers which you might like to use. All welcome.

Coffee mornings and library van

Wednesdays: August 2nd • August 30th • September 27th • October 25th Church is open from 10.30am to 12noon for coffee, chat and raffle. The library van is parked outside from about 11.15 to 11.45, so do support our local mobile library and come along to catch up on all the news. We look forward to seeing you in church!
