News from Thorney A special event for Halloween was held at St Helen’s Church on 30th October and it was good to see so many young people there, with their parents. The children enjoyed a scary story which was read by a strangely dressed witch and then, some amazing light experiments, from Doctor D! They coloured in masks and made candle holders, before having cakes and squash with another scary story, this time from the Bible! We hope they will not be too scared to come along again on December 9th. Don’t forget our coffee mornings to coincide with the library van, every four weeks on Wednesdays: 20th December Christmas Party Special 17th January, 14th February, Church is open from 10.30 to 12 noon and the library van visits from about 11.15am. We have a raffle and ask for donations towards tea/coffee. It will be good to see you! We collect regularly for the Newark Foodbank, so please bring along tins and packets of food when you can. Also any toiletries and/or household items. Some biscuits and special treats would be nice for the Christmas season. Our thanks to all who gave so generously at Harvest

Debbie pursued her career in the building society and was now Assistant Manager, catching the train into Leeds each morning at 7.45am. Today she had a day off as she’d worked Saturday. Steve progressed from being an area salesman to Sales Manager, and was now Sales Director, based in Bradford. They’d enjoyed a happy marriage until now, despite not being blessed with children. Sobbing uncontrollably as she thought about it, Debbie cast her mind back to where it all seemed to start, about three months ago. She’d begun to wonder with all the secret phone calls. One night as they watched the ten o’clock news his mobile rang and he went upstairs to take the call. He’d never done that before, normally he just carried on with the conversation in front of his wife as they had no secrets from each other. It got worse. Following his promotion, life had become easier for Steve. Very few overnight stays in various parts of the country, less irritating phone calls at a weekend or in the evening. After dressing for dinner, they made their way down to The Ribble Suite, the eighty capacity function room alongside the River Ribble. As they went inside, Debbie marvelled at the beautiful decorations. Each of the forty tables had large silver ribbons tied in bows on each chair and flowers in the table centres. As the head waiter showed them to a table for two right in the centre of the room, she commented on the décor to her husband. “They must have been left over from a wedding,” came his explanation. At the far end of the room was a stage with curtains closed across the front. As they gave their drinks order to the waiter, music started playing and the curtains opened to reveal a four-piece band, playing Lionel Richie’s ‘Endless Love’. As the tune finished, a door opened at the rear of the stage and through it walked Debbie’s boss in an evening suit, with a huge red book under his arm and in his broadest Irish accent spoke into the microphone.

This study focussed on a variety of royal jewels which have caused gasps of shock or amazement over the last 500 years. Susan’s journey began with the powerful jewels of Henry VIII, the scandalous jewels surrounding CharlesII, George IV and of course the Duchess of Windsor, to the romantic stories behind the jewels belonging to Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duchess of Cambridge today – who is not averse to wearing paste!

The lights are electric and the family, which consisted of my grandparents, my Mum and her three brothers, lived in Thorney at

I understand that initially the electricity was produced by a diesel generator and my Uncle John can remember starting the generator when he was a boy.
