Time to wake up!

etting up every morning and being able to enjoy the scenery around us is a great privilege. All year round we can walk along the beach, breathe in nature´s scents, listen to the birds singing, the sound of the waves, be caressed by the warm breeze in an unrivalled celebration. All of us living here and the thousands who choose Las Terrenas as a holiday destination, or the ever increasing numbers who settle here, know that our small town is a paradise. The roads and communications infrastructures that the State gave us a few years ago, such as the Samaná highway, the Atlantic Boulevard and El Catey international airport, were important investments that are now beginning to bear fruits in terms of increasing numbers of domestic and foreign tourists. The huge increase in the number of residents Las Terrenas has seen in recent years (from 3,000 to 30,000 in 20 years) also attracts different professionals from other provinces who see Las Terrenas as a thriving market to work, build or expand their business. More recently, we are seeing a new phenomenon: the emergence of large private Dominican companies. The opening of the Pola supermarket, in October 2014, seemed to be the signal that all the other companies were waiting for to set up in Las Terrenas. In the last two years Carol Pharmacies, Avis, Europcar, BHD Leon, Los Hidalgos Pharmacies, etc., opened new outlets in Las Terrenas, while El Nacional supermarket has also officially decided to join the already long list. All this progress, this huge increase in private constructions, companies, residents, etc., has its drawbacks. The few, or rather non-existent, infrastructures we have are totally inadequate to meet the needs of all the town´s inhabitants. It is worrying that, although Las Terrenas grows at a good pace, it is still small. Its organizational, urban and administrative planning is still perceived as that of a small, remote village of thirty years ago. It´s time for Las Terrenas to wake up and start receiving part of what it contributes to the state in taxes, to think about what it is now and where it´s going. The time has come to present plans and solutions to the grave problems affecting this municipality, time for our leaders, and us as a community, to begin analyzing and planning our municipality towards what it should be, a 21st century city and tourist destination. Supporting progress also means working on the basic infrastructure, protecting natural and cultural heritage, fixing and maintaining the streets, organizing an efficient garbage collection system, and banking on the best quality of life for all the inhabitants. And all this because living in Las Terrenas is a privilege, and we want it to stay that way!

Théodore Chassériau French School celebrates 30th anniversary

F

ounded by French ground breakers in 1988, over the years the school has continued to grow and improve. It started out as a simple little wooden cabin with one classroom, one teacher just in from Grenoble and nine students who, unbeknownst to them, were part of the creation of a veritable institution. Years pass and the school evolved thanks to the arrival of new residents. Then, motivated by Marie Lawrence Bohn and Gérard Prystasz (current Honorary French Consul), at the beginning of the term in 1998 the school becomes a non-profit association and is renamed the Ecole Française Théodore Chassériau. The school moved premises several times until, in 2011, the association bought a plot and inaugurated a new building. With a true vision of the future and determined to update itself, the institute decided to abandon the old NCDE (distance education) system in favor of joining the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE) and adopted a program approved by the French state. Nowadays, more than 150 children attend this school, availing of the computer room, chemistry laboratory, library, video library and the first 3D printer in Las Terrenas. Thanks to the quality of its teaching and its social involvement, the school has become a local reference point. Open to everyone, it organizes extra-curricular activities and events promoting French culture and language. The anniversary celebrations will continue throughout this school year with the participation of the French Embassy, the founding members and local dignitaries. Come visit the exhibition celebrating our 30th anniversary, and discover or look back on part of the history of Las Terrenas. www.ecolefrancaise-lasterrenas.com

POOL GARDEN & SPA Architecture in perfect harmony with its surroundings

F

ollowing two years of intense work and high hopes, Valcaoba Pool, Garden & Spa is now a reality. The complex is a haven of peace where beauty and quality are an indivisible whole. Located in a quiet street in the eastern sector of town, it is as close to the sea as the center of Las Terrenas and all amenities. Its architecture lives up to the challenge of using spaces rationally, without losing sight of the goal of connecting its residents with nature. The gentle slope of the plot is used to include an extra floor in one of the buildings, plus a large covered common area right in front of the pool. Some decorative elements of the facades, such as the series of wooden slats that control the amount of light entering the houses and prevent direct view inside, and the glass and steel railings, generate an interesting play of light and shade.

PUBLI-REPORTAGE

Valcaoba has achieved cozy, timeless and desirable living spaces where everything has been designed and built to guarantee a feeling of comfort and well-being. The houses vary in style from mini-lofts to 2 bedroom apartments or penthouses. The general layout of the interiors minimizes the use of walk around space and corridors. The atmosphere is bright and airy, thanks to the large floor-to-ceiling windows that give access to the verandas. A special mention for the complex´s common areas which include a large lounge area equipped with kitchen, bathrooms and television, pool area and large garden, spaces that serve as an extension of private homes. The project has been selling very successfully and only 10 of the existing 26 apartments are available: 2 mini lofts, one with garden and terrace and the other with terrace only, 6 two-bedroom apartments and 2 two-bedroom penthouses. What about the prices? One of the most relevant features of the project is the great value for money: US $ 79,900 is enough to own one. These homes are also available for rent, furnished or unfurnished. Visit Valcaoba Pool Garden & Spa, you will be delighted. The information office is on site. www.valcaoba.com

PUERTO PLAZA

Hotel & Shops

O

n the banks of the river facing the sea, beside the Pueblo de los Pescadores, the town´s entertainment area, two boat-shaped buildings draw our attention: we´re talking about Puerto Plaza Hotel & Shops, Las Terrenas´ new iconic commercial mall.

20 insamana

Since the first ship was opened in 2015, Puerto Plaza has wound its way into the hearts of local “Terreneros” and visitors alike. The key to its success lies in a mixture of factors, such as the variety of brands inside, the presence of a renowned pharmacy and a modern Italian-designed hotel, the comfort and upkeep of the facilities, the presence of an adequate number of

parking spaces, and, of course, its exceptional location. It was a real architectural feat for Rocco Bunetto & Sons, the construction company, who skillfully combined originality and engineering. Nowadays one can say it is one of Las Terrenas’ attractions, since passers-by and visitors all stop to take selfies to post on social networks. It certainly does not go unnoticed. Its location is unbeatable, facing the sea, right in the center, close to several gourmet restaurants and next to the Pueblo de los Pescadores, the most popular leisure and entertainment center of Las Terrenas.

PUBLI-REPORTAGE

Puerto Plaza is a spectacular unique apart-hotel with shopping plaza... an icon that is changing the future of downtown Las Terrenas. Unique ideas always havethe power to grab attention,as is the case of this hotel and shopping center which serves as a tourist attraction because of its particular shape:the best location to have a shop in Las Terrenas. insamana 21

PUBLI-REPORTAGE

Its location is unbeatable, facing the sea, in the town center, near several gourmet restaurants and next to the Pueblo de los Pescadores.

T

he plaza hosts a hotel that answers perfectly to the illusion of living in a modern mega-yacht. It currently consists of 8 suites with different accommodation proposals, but the finished project will have a total of 24 apartments. The units break loose from the typical hotel “room” format. The new “lifestyle” tourist hotel concept, much in vogue in recent years, was chosen for Puerto Plaza to make the guest feel more at home than in a hotel. There are spacious apartments of different sizes, all with boatshaped Jacuzzi, to offer maximum comfort to the most

22 insamana

demanding clients: space, suitably equipped kitchen and living room, king size beds. The fittings are all state-of-the-art with the latest in appliances, furniture and extravagances: some apartments even have water beds for a new exciting experience. The sheets are Egyptian 300 thread cotton paired with goose down pillows, a treat. In addition to having excellent, highly trained, professional staff, the hotel has a large terrace on the main bridge, with a pool and bar, to make your stay some-

thing truly unique. It promises and delivers up-to-date design, personalized service and “coolness. And the surprises are not over yet. Construction on the second ship is expected to be completed in early 2018, which will also include commercial premises, more hotel rooms on the middle decks and a magnificent terrace with a panoramic glass pool. In addition, the two boats are connected by a bridge and an elevator, maintaining its promise of originality, avant-garde and taste for life.

PUERTO PLAZA

Puerto Plaza has found a place in the heart of Terreneros and visitors alike.

Need more inspiration? By creating a square, a typical meeting point for socializing, with several attractive commercial premises available for rent in the central area between the two constructions, the developers imagined an emerging focus of activity. There will be a small theater to organize activities from time to time (concerts, dances, shows, etc.). A livable space: an excellent idea for a growing community. Things to become addicted to. www.puertoplazalasterrenas.com

his small bed & breakfast has become very popular because of the warm, personal way guests are treated. Traditionally a simple hotel with cheap rates, it now offers certain comforts and several optional services since being renovated at the end of 2016. Located in a quiet cul-de-sac, Casa Nina is outstanding for its sea front location at Punta Popy, one of the most valued beaches in the area, while only a short five minutes from the town center. The architectural and personal details in the decor create a really welcoming area on the central veranda that links the bar, where breakfast is served, with the patio and reception. Styles vary from the industrially inspired roof and bar counter to the selection of objects scattered here and there, creating a really relaxed atmosphere where you immediately feel at ease.

insamana 25

Casa Nina is one of the oldest hotels in Las Terrenas. No one knows exactly when it opened, but it has been running for over 30 years and owes its name to the original owners: DoĂąa Nina and her husband Saia, who went on to become town mayor. The brown leather armchair and lazy chairs bid you to relax, wooden ornaments tell the history of the peninsula, and the lighting creates a really nice nighttime atmosphere. It has 15 rooms for one, two, three or four guests, each with its own particular decor and services. Some have been completely renovated while others will be refurbished at a later date. You can spend the afternoon quietly napping or enjoying a good book in the pleasant privacy of your veranda.

pening the door to their house, not only are we greeted by the owners, but we are surrounded by at least a dozen street dogs, adopted by our generous hosts over the years and cared for as sweetly as if they were their own children. As soon as you arrive, you enter a Mediterranean-style patio with a terracotta floor, presided over by a huge flame tree, the Dominican national tree. Large terracotta pots just recently removed from an archaeological excavation host plants of various sizes and species, decorating and scenting the space. Another fundamental element of the patio is the water in the

central fountain, filled with papyrus and water lilies, refreshing the atmosphere and transmitting peace. We catch a glimpse of the immense garden in the background that goes on forever. The first thing to seduce you about this beautiful property is the spacious patio, the low north-facing u-shaped structure, with a kind of tower in the middle, and the incredible views along the Las Terrenas coastline, as well as the relaxing, green, natural, peaceful atmosphere. insamana 33

Laurent Vigier INTERVIEW

“All we need are more flights into El Catey airport, only 30 minutes away, and for the golf course to open, which we´ve been waiting for for a long time (too long), and everything will be fantastic”.

Manager of AIC Dominicana How many years in Las Terrenas... Laurent, where are you from in France and what brought you here? I arrived in March of ´93, I´m originally from Auvergne, in the center of France, but I was living in the Saint-Tropez area before I moved here. To tell the truth, it was all by chance, I wanted to move to South America, but not to an island! A friend of mine told me about the Dominican Republic and Las Terrenas. I came here and fell in love. How did you get started? What do you remember? What do you think you´ve learned during all this time? We set up a travel agency, the first in Las Terrenas. Selling airline tickets and hotel bookings; we developed and “shaped” the El Limón, Los Haitises and whale watching excursions, thanks to the help from the small hotels that were around back then, that gave us a hand. We also had a hand in setting up the El Portillo-Santo Domingo connection by grouping together the clients who were leaving on afternoon flights. “Air Santo Domingo” came on the scene later. It was hard at the beginning because there weren´t very many people around, there was no electricity or telephone, for that matter... we used to book the airline tickets over the radio directly with the agency in Samaná, and I´d go and collect them once a week on my 125 motorbike, drive through El Limón which at the time took an hour and a half. I remember that at a certain time there 46 insamana

was a need to “break away” from Bahia Tours and that´s when your real estate adventure began... Tell us how AIC Dominicana came about. After 2000, and with the evolution of the sector, I thought real estate tourism, management and rentals was the future for a place like Las Terrenas. Unlike Punta Cana and other similar places where mass tourism prevailed in collaboration with tour operators who controlled classic and individual tourism, we needed some new perspectives here. More and more people had houses or apartments in Las Terrenas and didn´t know how to manage them while they were away. So, in 2002, I created “Azul Inmo Caribe”, which later became AIC Dominicana, I offered my management services to the owners and used my connections with the travel agency to reach a new clientele that was potentially interested in renting holiday homes with the added bonus of hotel services. The idea caught on quickly. In fact, I found my first love again seeing as in France I used to work for a real estate agency... I came full circle, so to speak!

mistakes but not everyone is prepared to listen to other peoples´ advice. On the other hand, I got to meet lots of people from all walks of life through the job and made long lasting friendships.

Throughout your career, you have helped many of your clients opt for a better life thanks to your work; but on a personal level, how has life changed since you entered the sector? It´s a fascinating job, obviously it´s complicated matching the right product with the right person and requires a minimum of insight because lots of people need advice to avoid making

For someone who wants to buy a property in Las Terrenas, in your opinion, what should their main focus be in order to ensure the best investment? What percentage of rents can you expect on the amount invested? Anyone looking for good returns in terms of rentals should focus on the location: be near the sea or overlooking it or the town. Depending on these factors the number

Over all these years working in a town like this, with so many different kinds of people passing through, I imagine you have quite a few stories to tell. Can you share one in particular that stuck in your mind? There are so many extraordinary folk, others not so…! Each professional experience is different, but the best story is when someone finds what they are looking for thanks to your advice. Obviously you have lots of fantastic, surprising stories to tell. Maybe you could write a book… why not! How important is the rental market for an agency like yours today? We manage dozens upon dozens of houses and apartments for their respective owners. The clientele is international, one third European, one third North American and one third local and Latin.

“After 2000, and with the evolution of the sector, I thought real estate tourism, management and rentals was the future for a place like Las Terrenas”.

progress is consistent.

of weeks the property is occupied can vary between 12 and 30. Houses that can accommodate large numbers are easy to rent, thanks to family groups or groups of friends that share the rent. The weekly rate for a luxury villa usually works out cheaper than a week in a hotel, with the option of availing of premium services. The problems an agency has to deal with in these latitudes are often very different from the ones your European or North American colleagues face. Tell us about the main differences. The problems are the same, monitor eventual damages (even if minimum) and noise. Las Terrenas is a place where people come to have fun. The large

villa with swimming pool equals noise equation is almost a sure bet, but you have to understand that these people are on holidays. Initially, it was very hard to find competent staff for the various jobs like cleaning, cooking, maintenance, etc., but over the years we got to “train” an efficient staff apart from the fact that Las Terrenas in general is becoming more professionalized. What is your attitude in the face of the current crisis in the property market? Following a critical season for sales, the market is showing a marked recovery lately. On the other hand, regarding rentals,

Classic question: what are the future prospects for Las Terrenas? I see a very positive future for Las Terrenas, with lots of markets to be exploited, such as South American and regional tourism and above all local tourism. The improvement in transport and roads has brought Las Terrenas closer to the big Dominican cities and international airports. All we need are more flights into El Catey airport, only 30 minutes away, and for the golf course to open, which we´ve been waiting for for a long time (too long), and everything will be fantastic. The huge development Las Terrenas has experienced during the last 20 years is thanks to the private sector, it would be important for national and local authorities to recognize the diamond in the rough we have in our hands and to be more proactive in the development of this great town by providing it with the necessary infrastructures. Many people are interested in Las Terrenas these days, it´s developing quickly, but the “state” is struggling to keep up. And for AIC Dominicana? We´ll be celebrating our 25th anniversary in Las Terrenas pretty soon and I am still as happy as ever to be here. I can only hope the AIC grows with the same spirit!

Lomi Lomi the breath of life

M

arie travelled the world for years and only by chance came to Las Terrenas in 2002. A series of uninteresting jobs and her grandmother´s ill health brought her back to France to look after the grandmother she was very close to. Marie was frustrated and angry at being unable to relieve her grandmother´s pain and discomfort, but in the end this inspired her vocation and gave a new meaning to her life.

Lomi Lomi is a deep, fluid, rhythmic massage using both hands and forearms to cover more extensive areas and allow a firm controlled massage.

From then on she has dedicated all her time and efforts to studying and learning about different types of massage. Her desire to know the many techniques in depth brought her to a course in Bali where she discovered Lomi Lomi massage, an ancestral technique from Hawaii.

It helps restore energy circulation by improving the physical, mental and spiritual state of the person. Muscle stretching is an important part of the technique. The firm yet pleasant maneuvers and harmonic almost rhythmic movements make this massage one of the most in demand. Originally from Hawaii, it combines the use of prayer (pule), breathing (ha), and energy (mana) with a variety of deep gentle movements using the thumbs, knuckles, forearms and elbows to release blocked areas of tension.

Back in Las Terrenas, she began offering professional treatments, particularly Lomi Lomi massages which she specializes.

With a Lomi Lomi treatment, they say you receive Aloha... the breath of love... the breath of life...

ôté Soleil... the name is quite appropriate: entering the shop you’ll feel like you´re already on holidays, as the smiles from designer Chantal or her Cuban friend Paola are like rays of sunshine. Talking with Chantal we came to understand her collections: Côté Soleil is primarily a love story between the creator, the sun and the beach. Even as a child in the seventies, she spent her summers in Saint-Tropez and that´s where her unconditional love of small coastal towns comes from. Since the eighties, she has lived in Rosas, Cadaques, Ibiza, Marbella and finally back to Saint-Tropez where her son was born. 15 years ago she stumbled across the Dominican Republic and was completely enthralled by the country and its people, so sweet and charming, and she fell madly in love with this cosmopolitan piece of paradise with its unpaved roads and dazzlingly beauty beaches called Las Terrenas.

SOLEIL

She didn’t let up until she settled here, a dream that came true ten years ago. Having lived in the Mediterranean for nearly all her life, she was used to a certain style of clothes which she could not find anywhere locally. So, three years ago, she put everything she had into a private collection, just a few well designed models she manufactured herself in Italy, with prices just right for the market... the success was immediate. Year after year she built up her collection and now offers a great range of models. All this time spent in the sun, Chantal still has an unconditional love for white and a taste for refined fluid forms that let the body move and breathe freely. She only uses quality lightweight, cool materials, like cotton muslin, pre-washed linen and silk. Although she adores white she also offers her models in several colors, depending on the different dyes, available from year to year. This year, having reconciled with her first loves Saint-Tropez and Marbella, Chantal is back with hundreds of new models, an eclectic, colorful, energetic and joyful collection, hand-painted silk dresses and a wider men´s range. Apart from the collections of Chantal´s own creative, everything you need during the holidays is available at Côté Soleil: swimsuits, towels, Havaianas flip-flops, Panama hats, summer jewelry, shoes, belts, bags and accessories. LA GALERIA

ome years ago, a dilapidated Victorian mansion in Las Terrenas with no electricity but great natural light housed a group of local and foreign artists who used the space to develop and display their creative art. Little by little, residents and visitors began to recognize the house as a reference point for the town´s living art, as well art from all around the country. Thanks to the links this group of artists had with other cultural organizations, such as the Ceballos Estrella Foundation in Santiago, the public had access to some of the great Dominican artists: Domingo Liz, Jorgy Morel, Clara Ledesma, Paul Giudiccelli, Ada Balcácer, Elsa Nunez, Peña Defilló and many others. Fame does not always precede the artist, but since time immemorial, art has underpinned and guided the evolution of peoples around the world, as the highest expression of the human spirit and legacy. That is why, when the house was finally demolished, the link between the artists and their audience was in no way jeopardized. On the contrary, people´s need for contact with local art followed on to the gallery´s new home in the Colonial Plaza. Here, the works produced by the members of the group reached new heights and the group evolved into a space where art lovers could admire and acquire globally competitive works and what these masters were producing matched the individual needs for artistic and cultural appreciation in homes around the world.

Naturally, by now, CoArt-LT needed to expand their cultural proposals even further. To do so they needed a new space so they moved to a building on Av. 27 de Febrero, near Punta Popy. The new premises allowed the group members to go beyond limiting their art to the individual collector and boldly branch out by finding ways to reach a much larger, more global audience, for example the alliance signed with the Hotel Sublime Samaná. By directly exhibiting artistic works in its fine rooms, this holiday resort which caters to travelers who demand the highest quality in services, now promotes art produced in the DR. In addition to delighting the demanding visitor, Sublime Samaná set the trend for sealing a lasting alliance between tourism and Dominican culture. Kudos to them! Meanwhile, CoArt-LT is flying high: creativity in a variety of expressions for an ever increasing delight in art. Mirtha Olivares 56 insamana

The art of mosaics A very old but ever new technique

A

rmed with a glass cutter, tweezers, glue and plaster, Beryl, a mosaic artist settled in Las Terrenas for many years now, brings geometrical figures, flowers, faces, animals to life that are dazzling for their combinations of colors and shapes. The raw materials Beryl uses are pieces of glass, stones, fragments of plates or cups, rejected or leftover ceramic tiles and even glass beads and buttons. Quite often the things she randomly comes across feed her creativity, a piece of drift wood or something a neighbor threw out: recycling and getting carried away by your imagination are the rules of this art, adding a touch of plasticity to the decor of a house. Inspiration can come from anywhere, from a landscape, an emotion. It´s the desire to transmit, to share, it´s letting your sensations take on form and color. From a very early age, Wicked Beryl, as she likes to be called, was inspired by Gaudi´s “trencadi” technique and was fortunate to have worked with Niki de Saint Phalle on her Italian masterpiece, The Tarot Garden. This quickly became her way of expressing herself artistically. Beryl adapts her art to all kinds of decorative elements such as panels, furniture, floors, columns, gates, fountains, etc.

Nora Lis (Italian-Argentine), international consultant, expert in regional development. Paolo (Italian from Milan), former dive instructor. At the beginning of 2012, they pooled their dreams of producing healthy organic tropical fruits in the Samaná Peninsula. Back then, there was no such thing in the area but they were so firmly convinced that no one could stop them. They sought help and got it. They studied, researched and experimented ways to produce seedlings, fertilize them and cure them of the most common diseases, then looked for plants to complement each fruit and started producing under a crop variety system.

We produce internationally certified organic fruit. We pack only natural products, with no additives or chemical processing, following hygiene and food safety standards. Visits to the farm can be pre-arranged to get to know the crops and the attractive methods of production respectful of Pachamama.

The Szhiva Pachamama Farm started its activities in February 2012 on land that had never been touched, except for a few herds of cattle. They designed and built three lakes with containment and circulation canals to contain rainwater and stop the slopes from eroding. They diverted the public road to better avail of the plains and fertile lands. They architected the best use of productive land on level ground and uses for the abundant hills. They prepared the trelliswork for planting passion fruit, selected the best seeds and reproduced the seedlings. In April 2012, they began with 750 passion fruit plants then added

more than 50 native indigenous fruit trees, some papaya and banana trees. Their own research taught them how to produce organically, and the following year they started getting technical advice from experts from the Ministry of Agriculture´s Organics Department. Smoke, aromas and pleasures

U

ntil one has tasted the flavors and breathed in the aromas coming from our mouths the art of smoking cigars is often incomprehensible to other mortals.

There is something immortal about a cigar, something that links tradition and history in each hand that shapes it, from the craftsman who makes it to the moment it is consumed, leaving behind smoke, aromas and enjoyment for the smoker.

The cigar, puro or Havana encloses patience, care ... that “savoir faire, knowing how to wait” from production to consumption. It´s that lack of any hurry that gives a cigar that brief, delicious, characteristic immortality that it shares with most physical and spiritual pleasures.

But the enjoyment that comes from the green tobacco leaves is not just based on the quality of production ... the pleasure is also related to how a cigar is smoked: quite an art. Daniela Cruz
