Fall Runway Report The hottest fashion trends straight from the runway

THE

TREND REPORT

A Note from the Editor…

Fall is here! It has always been my favorite fashion season. I always joke that it’s the reason I live in a northern state. I have to have boots, jackets, hats and of course fabulous faux fur. Naturally when it was time for the Fall issue of The Trend Report, my excitement was just a bit higher than other issues. As always, it was a labor of love, one that I enjoyed very much. I couldn’t do it without my fabulous team and all the collaborators that made this issue possible. Thank you for sharing my love, passion and downright obsession for fashion & trends. I launched Trending with Tressie over 4 years ago as a way to share my knowledge, passion and obsession for new trends in the fashion and beauty industry. I had a vision of adding an extension of TwT, The Trend Report, as a way to further share my passion for editorial fashion, showcasing exclusive editorials we created to inspire. To showcase designer’s artful creations, shine a spotlight on my favorite collections of the season, and inspire with the makeup and hair trends for this season. I longed to develop a platform for artist, creators, fashion and beauty industry experts to collaborate and bring focus to their talents and connect passionate people together to create magic. But more than anything, I wanted to Inspire. I wanted to create. I wanted to ignite the passion I feel for fashion in everyone who opens The Trend Report. XO

COLLECTION REVIEW

M A R N I F W 1 5 R E A D Y-TO - W E A R No one in the fashion industry can argue with the fact that Consuelo Castiglioni is on a serious roll at Marni. Again, at Milan Fashion Week, the unassuming designer produced one of the strongest, modern and beautiful collections of the week.

This was a streamlined show that had a razor sharp precision to its execution. The effect was achieved by Castiglioni’s clever choice to use thick fabrics that she then placed, almost like paneling, over the models’ bodies. Different sections were left open so that the body could be perceived between the fabric of a skirt, or the color of tailored trousers would break though the side openings of a long sleek coat. Often it almost felt as if the zen-like construction of an ensemble was only being held to the body by one of the wide leather or snake skin belts the designer used.

The minimalistic silhouette, that had just a hint of the 1940s about it, was further enhanced with the introduction of fur into the works. Strokable patches appeared as pockets on skirts, a wide band at the waist, furry sleeves on coats and incorporated into luxurious long sleeveless tunics.

The other strong story of this a rc h i t e c t u r a l s h o w w a s t h e introduction of a number of

matelassé floral
jacquard pieces. They stuck to the same prominent streamlined silhouette of the show, but added a sensuality into the mix with tops and dresses cut away at the back to expose the body. Also, tying these garments up with a bow at the neck, its ribbons caressing the skin, helped to accentuate the suggestiveness of the looks.

This was a pure and empowering show. The clothing had a strength that was irrefutable, and will undeniably draw even more followers to Marni.

But what exactly is

“Ready-to-wear”?

R

eady-to-wear or prêt-à-porter often abbreviated RTW; "off-therack" or "off-thepeg" in casual use) is the term for factory-made clothing, sold in finished condition, in standardized sizes, as distinct from made to measure or bespoke clothing tailored to a particular person's frame. Off-the-peg is sometimes used for items which are not clothing, such as handbags. Ready-to-wear has rather different connotations in the spheres of fashion and classic clothing. In the fashion industry, designers produce ready-to-wear clothing intended to be worn without significant alteration, because clothing made to standard sizes fits most people. They use standard patterns, factory equipment, and faster construction techniques to keep costs low, compared to a custom-sewn version of the same item. Some fashion houses

and fashion designers produce mass-produced and industrially manufactured ready-to-wear lines, while others offer garments that, while not unique, are produced in limited numbers. The Bread & Butter in Berlin is considered to be the world's most important trade fair for ready-to-wear fashion Fashion houses that produce a women's haute couture line, such as Chanel, Dior, Lacroix and Saint Laurent also produce a ready-to-wear line, which returns a greater profit due to the higher volume of garments made and the greater availability of the clothing. The construction of ready-to-wear clothing is also held to a different standard than that of haute couture due to its industrial nature. High-end ready-to-wear lines are sometimes based upon a famous gown or other pattern that is then duplicated and advertised

to raise the visibility of the designer. In high-end fashion, ready-towear collections are usually presented by fashion houses each season during a period known as Fashion Week. This takes place on a city-by-city basis, and the most prominent of these include London, New York, Milan, and Paris, and are held twice a year—the Fall/ Winter (FW) shows take place in February, and the Spring/ Summer (SS) collections are shown in September. Smaller lines including the Cruise and Pre-Fall collections, which add to the retail value of a brand, are presented separately at the fashion designer's discretion. Ready-to-wear fashion weeks occur separately and earlier than those of haute couture.

COLLECTION REVIEW

Balenciaga RTW Fall 2015

!39

!41

Balenciaga Fall RTW 2015 Alexander Wang impresses once again with the Balenciaga collection. This is the fourth Wangmenswear collection for the label. The aesthetic was monkish almost. High-cut double-face jackets came with a frontispiece that was applied via magnet at the collarbone; cashmere mock turtlenecks in black or white nodded to the clerical. A cowled long coat was double knit to achieve the suggestion of scattered stones; a two-piece gray knit jacquard resembled a snowy mountainside under moonlight. A wool, nylon-armed sweatshirt with a body made of hand-cut meshed astrakhan was a lesson on the potential for artisanal techniques to heightened RTW/Sportswear. At Balenciaga Wang is refining luxury that is strong, structured and pure. For some people that strictness will be off-putting, but for others it will be the key fascination.

Fall MAKEUP Trends look bold and strong.Think warm fall colors, dark lips and dramatic smokey eyes. Here are the hottest trends you're going to want to rock this fall! !55

Bronze Shadow metallic eyeshadow before, but this We've seen

season many makeup artists opt

for rather than classic gold or silver. The color really warms up the face and works awesome paired with the 70’s fashion trend, but really works with any style.

Flushed Cheeks This season a handful of designers tasked their makeup artists with creating a flushed

cheeks look. from the winter cold. At J.Crew (pictured) they wanted the models to look like they just stepped off the slopes.

!57

Feathery Brows brows

Overly filled are never a good look, but now the trend is moving toward the "feather brow," seen at shows like Burberry, Elie Saab, and Giambattista Valli. The term refers to lightly filled arches that are brushed up and a bit wild ... yet still groomed-looking.

To rock the look, use quick and tiny strokes of a brow pencil to mimic brow hairs. Brush your brows up at the start and outward as you move toward the outside corner.

TREND HAIR

Hair Trends to Rock your Fall

The Headband Hair accessories are making a serious comeback. Headbands, no matter the style, seem like a perfect option when you want a nofuss way to keep your hair out of your face while still looking like you put in a little effort.

!63

Side Parting Stylists everywhere will be parting hair to one side come fall. This parting looks flattering on anyone's face and works on straight styles, classic styles, loose French twists, or wet and grungy roots.Â

Wet Look First seen last summer, this trend is continuing into the cold of winter. Damp roots that still bear the mark of a comb to tie up or leave free. This look is versatile with a sleek finish or mess up your ends and leave those dry.

!65

Curly Curls Move over wavy hair. It's now the turn of curls. The rounder, sexier style that has numerous variations and playfulness.Â

Back To The Bun The bun is back, and this time with many variations. The one that caught our eye is the high on the head version with lots left cascading down the back of the neck

!67

ManBUN If you prefer longer locks, the ever popular Jared Leto man bun is still on-trend. In fact, the look refuses to go away. The style is bohemian and the less effort you put into this look the sexier it is. This style has been on the radar for a while now so if you are already a top knot-devotee then perhaps the undercut/knot fusion is the change you need this season. To give an edge to your buns, try the undercut manbun look where the hair is kept long at the top of the head while the rest is clipped

Bohemian Rhapsody As alluring as the bohemian lifestyle is, it's most often the clothes that seem to constantly return to popular culture. This case of early-'70s had designers sending an eclectic mix of vibrant boho looks — floaty longsleeved dresses, tiered tops with feather embellishments, and floral prints layered atop floral prints — down the runway and into the modern era once again.

Window Treatment  Â

What gingham is to Spring, windowpane plaid will be to Fall. The hatched print is going to have a major moment in a season filled with buffalo plaids and tweedy tartans. The wide windowpane checks in smart black and white feel more sophisticated than the rest and have thusly been placed on everything from trench coats to evening gowns while still looking right at home on slouchy coolgirl separates.

Chanel Fall 2015

Into the Gray The color that took over the Fall runways was gray, but it's not as bleak as you think. The versatile color looks particularly cool in monochromatic schemes and is an easy one to pull off head to toe. Not only is it impossible to find tones that clash (something that can't be said for, say, orange), it goes with everything in your closet — and makes accessorizing a snap.

Fringe Benefits  Â

Ralph Lauren Fall 2015

Where we've seen fringed details creeping onto bags and shoes since last season, designers are using it much more heavy-handedly come Fall. The simple technique gives skirts a sexy skin-baring effect, ups the ante on evening wear, and adds textural intrigue to already-cozy knits.

Patchwork With so many different fabrics on the table and so many textures and shades to choose from, we're not surprised designers are opting to include as many as they could in their collections. From technicolor toppers to colorblock dresses with jagged edges to evening gowns sewn out of scraps, patchwork is the ultimate style mashup and may just be the most unexpected print for Fall.

Waist Management

A cinched waist is a clear

Balmain Fall 2015

must for silhouettes in Fall 2015, and the best way to get one is with a corseted belt. Wrapped over coats, vests, jumpsuits, and dresses, the oversize accessory is an effortless way to show off curves with looser pieces. Plus, there's no better way to draw attention to — or fake! — an hourglass shape.

The oversized coat The best way to stay warm in the peak of winter in 2015 is to swap your parka for an oversized coat in double-layered cashmere, padded or wool.

Fur Fur for men had a surprisingly strong presence on the runways, bringing a deluge of ostentatious styles. Stepping out of the discreet shadow cast by cropped fur are more luxurious, show stopping styles. Wear it in black, brown, to the thigh, to the knee, 3/4 and, always oversized.

From left to right: Paul Smith, Dunhill, J.W.Anderson

Velvet A staple of the preppy look, whether it's trousers or a jacket, velvet is making a comeback. We have our eye on the XXL Fendi corduroy trousers, Bottega Veneta's casual spin on the look and this velvet suit by Alexander McQueen.

The baggy trouser Baggy trousers are overtaking straight-legged or skinny cuts this winter, with the loose fit creating a whole new silhouette favored by Lanvin, Margiela and Wooyoungmi.

From left to right: Ami, Lanvin, Maison Martin Margiela

Burgundy With an appearance in all of the biggest shows, burgundy is the clear frontrunner for color of the season for men. Winter calls for warm, comforting tones such as the wine or purple shades showcased by Lanvin, Dior Homme, Valentino, Berluti and Alexander McQueen.

Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2015 Couture Show

R U N WA Y R E V I E W The Grand Palais exhibition has served to remind Paris not only of the breadth of Gaultier's career but also of his brilliance. There were flashes of it here. In a spectacular trench made from black feathers. In a long black and brilliant yellow velvet dress rendered in a pattern typical of Brittany. There's something about those Breton stripes. They're iconic and irresistible. Peacoats and bombers with fine gold-thread embroidery you find on the costumes of Brittany's bagad bands were also easy to like. In a series of circular, almost tribal looks Jean Paul Gaultier included in the second half of his fall 2015 couture show. The first half was an ode to his well-known love of nautical stripes: There were striped hats, striped tights, striped shirts and even a striped silk jumpsuit (that I would actually wear). Most models wore vertiginous headpieces, some of which were fez-like; others resembled lace solar panels. Yes, very theatrical and a tad heavy handed at times, but this is Haute Couture. It is meant to be looked at as an expression of art and to show everyone what the designer can really do. (see fashion lesson at the end of this review)

But what exactly is Haute Couture? A History lesson… {thanks Wikipedia!!}

H

aute couture can be referenced back as early as the 1700s. Rose Bertin, the French fashion designer to Queen Marie Antoinette, can be credited for bringing fashion and haute couture to French culture. French leadership in European fashion continued into the 18th century when influence was sourced from art, architecture, music, and fashions of the French court at Versailles were imitated across Europe. Visitors to Paris brought back clothing that was then copied by local dressmakers. Stylish women also ordered fashion dolls dressed in the latest Parisian fashion to serve as models.

parelli, Balenciaga, and Dior. Some of these fashion houses still exist today, under the leadership of modern designers.

As railroads and steamships made European travel easier, it was increasingly common for wealthy women to travel to Paris to shop for clothing and accessories. French fitters and dressmakers were commonly thought to be the best in Europe, and real Parisian garments were considered better than local imitations.

Dior and Balenciaga left these established couture houses and opened their own establishments. Ted Lapidus, and Emanuel Ungaro. Japanese native and Paris-based Hanae Mori was also successful in establishing her own line.

The couturier Charles Frederick Worth (October 13, 1826–March 10, 1895), is widely considered the father of haute couture as it is known today. Although born in Bourne, Lincolnshire, England, Worth made his mark in the French fashion industry. Revolutionizing how dressmaking had been previously perceived, Worth made it so the dressmaker became the artist of garnishment: a fashion designer. While he created one-of-akind designs to please some of his titled or wealthy customers, he is best known for preparing a portfolio of designs that were shown on live models at the House of Worth. Clients selected one model, specified colors and fabrics, and had a duplicate garment tailor-made in Worth's workshop. Worth combined individual tailoring with a standardization more characteristic of the ready-to-wear clothing industry, which was also developing during this period. Following Worth's footsteps were , Patou, Poiret, Vionnet, Fortuny, Lanvin, Chanel, Mainbocher, Schia

Lacroix is one of the fashion houses to have been started in the late 20th century. Other new houses have included Jean-Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler. Due to the high expenses of producing haute couture collections, Lacroix and Mugler have since ceased their haute couture activities. Modernized haute couture shows are not designed and made to be sold, rather they are exactly what they are displayed for - for show. Instead of being constructed for the purpose of selling and making money, they are made to further the publicity, as well as perception and understanding of brand image. For all these fashion houses, custom clothing is no longer the main source of income, often costing much more than it earns through direct sales; it only adds the aura of fashion to their ventures in ready-to-wear clothing and related luxury products such as shoes and perfumes, and licensing ventures that earn greater returns for the company. Excessive commercialization and profit-making can be damaging, however. Cardin, for example, licensed with abandon in the 1980s and his name lost most of its fashionable cachet when anyone could buy Cardin luggage at a discount store. It is their ready-to-wear collections that are available to a wider
