MAN FACES AND MAKEUP

RUNWAY REVIEW: ASTRID ANDERSEN

THE

TREND

REPORT

A Note from the Editor…

A HUGE thank you to everyone that worked so hard in making our first ever menswear issue possible! I couldn’t do it without the fabulous team and all the amazingly talented collaborators. It is your talents and passion that keep me going in times of complete exhaustion. Thank you for sharing my love, passion and downright obsession for fashion & trends.

I launched Trending with Tressie 5 years ago as a way to share my knowledge, passion and obsession for new trends in the fashion and beauty industry. I had a vision of adding an extension of TwT, The Trend Report, as a way to further share my passion for editorial fashion, showcasing exclusive editorials we created to inspire. To showcase designer’s artful creations, shine a spotlight on my favorite collections of the season, and inspire with the makeup and hair trends for this season. I longed to develop a platform for artist, creators, fashion and beauty industry experts to collaborate and bring focus to their talents and connect passionate people together to create magic. But more than anything, I wanted to Inspire. I wanted to create. I wanted to ignite the passion I feel for fashion in everyone who opens The Trend Report.

COLLECTION REVIEW

Theory’s head of

menswear, Ben

Stubbington,

presented the label’s new collection in their Gansevoort Street store

“We’re not trying to create whimsical clothes that don’t have an end use,” Stubbington said. “There

are no frills and deliberately so.” One of the tenets of the Theory philosophy: The clothes don’t change radically from season to season. A four-way stretchnylon fabric called neoteric, which was originally produced for climbers and

cyclists, was used here for travel pants with elasticized waists in back. He insists that they feel like sweatpants but that with their high wrinkle- and stainresistance, they could walk straight off an airplane and into a meeting.

Performance clothing, and its incorporation into the urban environment, is shaping up to be another big talking point of the menswear season, especially in New York.

FA S H I O N L E S S O N But what exactly is “Ready-to-wear”? A lesson in fashion… {Thanks wikipedia!}

R

eady-to-wear or prêt-à-porter often abbreviated RTW; "off-the-rack"or “off-thepeg" in casual use) is the term for factory-made clothing, sold in finished condition, in standardized sizes, as distinct from made to measure or bespoke clothing tailored to a particular person's frame. Off-thepeg is sometimes used for items which are not clothing, such as handbags. Ready-to-wear has rather different connotations in the spheres of fashion and classic clothing. In the fashion industry, designers produce ready-to-wear clothing intended to be worn without significant alteration, because clothing made to standard sizes fits most people. They use standard patterns, factory equipment, and faster construction techniques to keep costs low, compared to a customsewn version of the same

item. Some fashion houses and fashion designers produce mass-produced and industrially manufactured ready-to-wear lines, while others offer garments that, while not unique, are produced in limited numbers. The Bread & Butter in Berlin is considered to be the world's most important trade fair for ready-to-wear fashion. Fashion houses that produce a women's haute couture line, such as Chanel, Dior, Lacroix and Saint Laurent also produce a ready-towear line, which returns a greater profit due to the higher volume of garments made and the greater availability of the clothing. The construction of ready-towear clothing is also held to a different standard than that of haute couture due to its industrial nature. Highend ready-to-wear lines are sometimes based upon a

famous gown or other pattern that is then duplicated and advertised to raise the visibility of the designer. In high-end fashion, readyto-wear collections are usually presented by fashion houses each season during a period known as Fashion Week. This takes place on a city-by-city basis, and the most prominent of these include London, New York, Milan, and Paris, and are held twice a year—the Fall/ Winter (FW) shows take place in February, and the Spring/Summer (SS) collections are shown in September. Smaller lines including the Cruise and PreFall collections, which add to the retail value of a brand, are presented separately at the fashion designer's discretion. Ready-towear fashion weeks occur separately and earlier than those of haute couture.

TREND COLOR Aurora Red

(18-1550)

A bold red hue is always a hit, season after season; Fiesta was spring’s in-demand rouge. For fall, it's all about the bold pop of color.

Spicy Mustard

(14-0952) Confirms our beliefs that a darker yellow hue has a place in our go-to fall color palette, alongside shades of burgundy and navy. The citrus-y shade will pop up a lot as an accent, both in prints and embellishment, in the upcoming collections, according to Pantone.

Lush Meadow (18-5845) recalls the great outdoors specifically, the rich foliage that gets lost so quickly once the temperatures start to dip.

Photographed by Jeff Kappel

Styling, Muh, Art Direction - Tressie Schneider Interviewed by Angelica Schneider ! 26 THE TREND REPORT WINTER 2017

COVER MODEL SPOTLIGHT Q&A

How long have you been modeling? Since I was 20 I believe. I'm now 27!

What inspired you to become a model? I think I gain inspiration as time passes. I believe it is built up for me when I work and keeps me moving forward.

How did you become a part of this industry? When I was around 19, my friend had taken a few photos of me and won an art competition in my home town. I was surprised at my appearance in the shot, and realized I didn't see myself as others do. I gained a new sense of confidence from the experience. I believe a year or so after that I submitted some photos to Wehmann and met with Susan. I booked a few jobs while I was going to school and just grew more attached to the expression it allowed me. I really enjoy meeting and working with people in the arts community here..

Where was your favorite location when shooting? Probably in the Caribbean with the famous Jenna Mahr.

What's your favorite thing about being a model? Experiencing new things and meeting the hard working people who make their passion into something beautiful. And also learning from these individuals and experiences

What do you think the hardest part about being a model is? For me, the hardest part is posing and position. I feel like I always must be improving that aspect. Telling a story through imagery is a difficult art, but those who do it well seem to succeed.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting off as a model? Patience is key. Meet everyone and try everything.

How would you describe your personal style? I like sticking to classic and simple clothing. I feel as though I wear things that make me feel confident. I want my style to make me stand taller. I have a few select pieces I like to wear all the time. Although I do believe I wear the rougher, rugged look well too. Jeans and a t-shirt is my usual daily outfit.

What is favorite current fashion trend? I really like all of the light outerwear for guys right now. Silk, nylon, polyester, thinner vests, that kind of stuff.

If you could bring back one fashion trend from the past, what would it be? All of the awesome during the 60s and 70s.

! 28 THE TREND REPORT WINTER 2017

MICHAEL What do you value most in life?

“ Love because it

conquers all. I believe it is the reason why we all have values. And I think that it dictates most human actions.”

THE TREND REPORT WINTER 2017

Q & A CONTINUED…..

If you were given the chance to go on any adventure, all expenses paid, what would you do and where? This is a tough one! I love the ocean. I'd love to travel through the Southern Hemisphere. I've never been. Hopefully there'd be lots of swimming, sailing, diving and hiking.

If you could take one thing away from the world, what would you take away? I'd probably take away Styrofoam...

What is your biggest pet peeve? When people don't use their blinker...

Do you have a favorite clothing line? Probably Hugo Boss and John Varvatos.

Who is someone you idolize? I always say my parents.

What is your favorite social media platform? I feel like I can't pick a favorite. They're all pretty fun for me. :)

Do you have a daily routine? If yes, what is it? I don't have a routine or set work schedule. It's actually a crazy schedule. I do always wake up and think of coffee first. I hope to one day have a daily routine.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I see myself with a family and/or traveling everywhere as much as I can.

You have to eat one food for the rest of your life, what is it? Milkshakes

You are stranded on an island and you can only have 3 things with you, what are they? A hatchet, maybe an iPod, and a giant sack of pistachios.

DUFFLE COATS

Theres been a bit of a upgrade to the duffle coat by incorporating sports wear fabrics, color blocking and shorter lengths. I like that the placement of the button toggles has shifted more to the left than traditionally centered.

TREND STYLE

MILITARY

Traditional navy pea-coats will forever be a staple winter jacket. Go for a coat with large gold buttons or red trim around the edges. Embroidered designs stitched in gold or black are a huge aspect of this trend. Just think Balmain.

TREND STYLE

VELVET

Velvet is here to stay. I love how luxurious it looks and feels. A velvet blazer or bomber jacket can easily transform from day to night. To achieve a glimmer of velvet add a baseball hat, tie or sunglasses.

Italia Independent velvet-effect sunglasses ($200) TOPMAN Light Grey Velvet Dress Scarf ($9.28) Salvatore Ferragamo Finnegan Velvet Tassel Dress Shoes ($640) Yves Saint Laurent Formal Velvet with Satin Knot Classic Tie ($150 BOSS Velvet Evening Jacket ($530) TOPMAN Gold Velvet Smart Bomber Jacket ($49) Giuseppe Zanotti Red Velvet London HighTop Sneakers ($895)

TREND STYLE

PUFF JACKET

Theres nothing more cozy in the bitter cold months than a puffy jacket. Its all about the oversized fit. The more you feel like a marshmallow the better. To make a big statement try a puff in yellow or silver. I personally really dig the multi colored.

SILVER FOX Ask any woman and they'll tell you that men should never be ashamed of gray hair. Let the grays come out to play. If you desire that subtle gray look, you should ask your stylist for a special men's color

BOWL

Once popular back in the 90's and a trend that was cringe worthy, the bowl cut is back. This time around, it's better, edgier, messier and cooler than its predecessor. Perfect for the guy who wants an artistic edge and ability to be a trendsetter.

LONG HAIR Men can say "Long hair, don't care" too. It's very versatile with an added bonus of rocking a man bun or man braid. Long hair is typically for the rebellious while really long hair can be either hippy or metal. This look is perfect for thick, wavy hair.

SHORT TEXTURE This look has a short fade on the sides, creating the top as the focal point. Embracing longer, more textured styles on top, this versatile style can vary in lengths and how you style it. Be sure to use grooming clay or

SHINE ON High shine fabric was spotted everywhere this season. Shirts were perhaps the most obvious and easiest way to get on the trend (they look great under a blazer), but leather pants and silken or nylon outerwear (such as the bombers and parkas at Ami) were also well-represented on the catwalks. TARTAN The classic Scottish print rages on the runways this season. While tartans in traditional colors work well to maintain a classic feel to looks, try experimenting with bolder and brighter versions for a more vivid take on the trend. Reds, mustards and bright greens are a few examples of more daring tartan color choices that will leave an impression.

MAN FACES AND MAKEUP Musicians have been rocking eyeliner forever. Makeup on men for film, print and runway is nothing new. But man makeup isn’t just for the stage anymore. With CoverGirl selecting its first male spokesmodel, the Brant Brothers championing their own MAC line, and YouTubers like Patrick Starrr and Manny MUA changing the way we talk about gender and beauty, the idea of men and cosmetics is FINALLY becoming mainstream.

There's such a “conversation” about makeup as a whole. Everyone seems to have an opinion on it and the idea that it is or isn't for certain people. I think it is becoming increasingly problematic. We totally get if the category of makeup is just not your jam, you certainly can skip to the next article. I’m just asking you before you do to keep an open mind on the topic and try to de-program your mindset and accept that there's nothing wrong with men and makeup, that a man in makeup doesn't look a certain way or mean a certain thing. At the end of the day, it's really just about having fun with your look. My first thought when writing this article was to showcase a pro makeup artist’s man makeup work on models But then I had the thought , why not find a few fab fellows that are rocking makeup on the regular?! Isn’t this what the article is all about anyway? Empowering , encouraging and helping bring acceptance to those men that are having fun with their look on the daily. Instagram is where my search began. Please join me in encouraging and following these guys in their fun fabulous journey.

R U N WA Y R E V I E W

ASTRID ANDERSEN takes us to the court this season

Basketball was a clear inspiration behind the designers 2017 Fall Menswear collection. Astrid’s silhouettes are clearly contemporary, but this sportswear collection had a very lux and almost romantic vibe twisted in. Something rarely found in sportswear-sourced-streetwear. Andersen played with a palette of sophisticatedly regal colors: bottle green velvet, burgundy, and golden corduroy, with gold lace from Sophie Hallette.
