THE
TREND REPORT
A Note from the Editor… Happy 1st Anniversary!! Naturally when it was time for this special anniversary issue of The Trend Report, my excitement was just a bit higher than other issues. What a journey this has been! It has been a labor of love, one that I enjoyed very much. I couldn’t do it without my fabulous team and all the collaborators that make this possible. It is your talents and passion that keep me going in times of complete exhaustion. Thank you for sharing my love, passion and downright obsession for fashion & trends.
I launched Trending with Tressie over 4 years ago as a way to share my knowledge, passion and obsession for new trends in the fashion and beauty industry. I had a vision of adding an extension of TwT, The Trend Report, as a way to further share my passion for editorial fashion, showcasing exclusive editorials we created to inspire. To showcase designer’s artful creations, shine a spotlight on my favorite collections of the season, and inspire with the makeup and hair trends for this season. I longed to develop a platform for artist, creators, fashion and beauty industry experts to collaborate and bring focus to their talents and connect passionate people together to create magic. But more than anything, I wanted to Inspire. I wanted to create. I wanted to ignite the passion I feel for fashion in everyone who opens The Trend Report. XO

COLLECTION REVIEW
DOLCE & GABBANA S S 1 6 R E A D Y-TO - W E A R

Sizzling Carretto Siciliano SUMMER LOOKS TOWARDS SICILIAN FOLK
The charming and unique patterns which characterize the typical Sicilian horse drawn cart (Carretto Siciliano) inspired the Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2016 collection with a portion dedicated entirely to this piece from the Italian island’s folk heritage. Summer appropriate looks ranging from tunics to maxi dresses and crop tops passing by the quintessential summer staples; swimwear and oversize sunglasses are adorned with patterns representing the wheels of the carretto as well as the highly colorful baroque scrolls which are ubiquitous on the body of the carts.

But what exactly is
“Ready-towear”?
R
eady-to-wear or prêt-àporter often abbreviated RTW; "off-therack" or "off-the-peg" in casual use) is the term for factorymade clothing, sold in finished condition, in standardized sizes, as distinct from made to measure or bespoke clothing tailored to a particular person's frame. Off-thepeg is sometimes used for items which are not clothing, such as handbags. Ready-to-wear has rather different connotations in the spheres of fashion and classic clothing. In the fashion industry, designers produce readyto-wear clothing intended to be worn without significant alteration, because clothing made to standard sizes fits most people. They use standard patterns, factory equipment, and faster construction techniques to keep costs low, compared to a custom-sewn version of the same item.
Some fashion houses and fashion designers produce mass-produced and industrially manufactured ready-towear lines, while others offer garments that, while not unique, are produced in limited numbers. The Bread & Butter in Berlin is considered to be the world's most important trade fair for ready-to-wear fashion Fashion houses that produce a women's haute couture line, such as Chanel, Dior, Lacroix and Saint Laurent also produce a ready-to-wear line, which returns a greater profit due to the higher volume of garments made and the greater availability of the clothing. The construction of ready-towear clothing is also held to a different standard than that of haute couture due to its industrial nature. High-end readyto-wear lines are sometimes based upon a famous gown or other pattern that is then du-
plicated and advertised to raise the visibility of the designer. In high-end fashion, ready-towear collections are usually presented by fashion houses each season during a period known as Fashion Week. This takes place on a city-by-city basis, and the most prominent of these include London, New York, Milan, and Paris, and are held twice a year—the Fall/Winter (FW) shows take place in February, and the Spring/Summer (SS) collections are shown in September. Smaller lines including the Cruise and Pre-Fall collections, which add to the retail value of a brand, are presented separately at the fashion designer's discretion. Ready-towear fashion weeks occur separately and earlier than those of haute couture.

THE TREND REPORT As creatives in this crazy world of fashion, we love creating. Often doing so for just that, LOVE. Seldom do we get the recognition or appreciation we deserve, but that’s never been the motivation for most of us. But for this very special first anniversary issue, I wanted to flip the focus {and camera} to the other side for just a moment and connect with the people that make what you are reading and enjoying {hopefully} right now possible. I asked these cool kids what inspired them, what they loved doing and the hard hitting questions like, “Facebook or Instagram” In a little game of which one is better? THE

You + Trend Report *What is your favorite thing about The Trend Report-TwT Magazine? I love that the Trend Report-TwT Magazine works with local fashion industry lovers. It shows that it doesn’t matter that we are in Minnesota. We have an extremely strong voice with a lot to say. *What made you want to collaborate with The Trend Report-TwT? I have always been passionate about fashion magazines and styling. When I found out about The Trend Report-TwT I had to be a part of it! It has been an awesome opportunity to meet and work with some insanely talented people!! Also its an amazing platform be able to share our views of fashion with the world. *What do you love most about your job? When I am styling online I get satisfaction from making someone take fashion risks. Most people love fashion but just don’t have the confidence or knowledge on how to style themselves. I am changing the world one outfit at a time.
*How did you get into the field you're in and why? As a kid I loved putting outfits together and playing different characters. I often re arranged my room and decorated it with anything I could find. I put the two together and made a career out of it. *What is that one thing which makes you different? I am ambitious. I think you should always be learning and trying new things. You never know what can happen without taking risks and asking questions. *Where/How do you draw your inspiration from? I am inspired by everything around me. It may be music, art, movies, or people. The current moment we live in. Fashion is always evolving just like us. * What do you like most about working in the fashion/beauty editorial industry? I like that the possibilities are endless and there are no rules. * What would you like to change? I wish people in the fashion industry were more about working together instead of it being such a
battlefield. We are all working toward the same goals. Let’s empower each other!!

*What is your favorite thing about The Trend Report-TwT Magazine? I love the runway report! I really enjoy watching runway shows in general so seeing the style trends to watch in the Magazine is my jam! *What made you want to collaborate with The Trend Report-TwT? I had met Tressie at a party over the summer, and she was one of those people you just want to be around and wanted to work with. Being in this industry you want to support your friends just as they want to support you. So as a model I can be a part of a creative process that supports the magazine and supports my career!
*What are you most passionate about? Faith, family, and nutrition! *What do you love most about your job? The best part of modeling I think is that you are never doing the same thing! It is always different and always meeting new people. It keeps you on your toes!
*How did you get into the field you're in and why? Honestly it all started with my dad signing me up for a modeling workshop that we went to back when I was 14. At the time my life revolved around soccer and my dream was to play division 1 at a big university. It wasn't until having back and hip surgery took me out of playing college soccer that I began to explore modeling and the fashion industry. It was something that really helped me discover my creative side and I fell in love with it. It has just really blossomed from there!
*What is that one thing which makes you different? I can juggle!? * Where would you like to see your career in 5 years? Well I am still in school unsure on exactly what kind of job I want with my Marketing degree. But I hope to be working on the creative side of business and continue to model.
*Where/How do you draw your inspiration from? Oh my goodness, Vogue. I still get excited every month it comes in the mail and sit down and read it cover to cover. I am Carrie Bradshaw at heart.
* What do you like most about working in the fashion/beauty editorial industry? The endless amount of creativity. The fashion and beauty industry is constantly evolving and being part of this evolution is so inspiring! * What would you like to change? I wish there was a more positive stereotype for models in the modeling industry. I base my life around health, nutrition, and to be an inspiration for a healthy, happy mind, body and soul!
fitness and I want
*What is your most embarrassing fashion or beauty moment? Tell us about it! Oh gosh, haha I was walking at the Minnesota fashion awards in the fall and as I was walking down the stairs when exiting and I tripped over my dress and thank goodness my designer was there to grab onto, but she was so small I almost took us both down. I am almost positive that part of the left side of the audience and everyone backstage saw my incredibly uncoordinated moment. That was really embarrassing! !41

SARAH
ELIZABETH Q&A You + Trend Report *What is your favorite thing about The Trend Report-TwT Magazine? I love working with fellow creatives to put out something “different” when it comes to a “fashion magazine.” I feel like when we all get together to create, something amazing happens, we all push one another just outside our comfort zones and magic is created in each photo. It’s not only about “high fashion” but there are so many tips, tricks and trends in the magazine that everyone can take advice from. *What made you want to collaborate with The Trend Report-TwT? - Honestly it was the people involved with my first shoot that made me jump at the chance. I had seen Tressie’s name popping up in all these amazing images and when it happened that she reached out to me for the first shoot I rearranged my schedule to make it possible. I couldn’t have been more thrilled with the end result images, and I was so proud of what we had created together. There’s always a certain level of nerves that happen before any shoot, but those disappeared the moment we all met and it felt like working with really amazing friends, or more like family than it did working with an entirely new-to-me team.
*What are you most passionate about? Wanting to help everyone feel confident in their own skin and helping people see that all their uniqueness is what makes each and every one of us beautiful. Everyone has their own definition of “beauty” and there is no one-size-fits-all mold.
*What do you love most about your job? - Every day is a different adventure and as much as I love getting to work on stunning models, I love that moment when the everyday person looks in my mirror and thinks (and feels like) they look amazing. It’s wild to watch the instant change in their body language and how they come alive. *What is that one thing which makes you different? - It’s really hard to get me in front of a camera and to be “serious.” I’m a giant self-proclaimed dork. I can’t keep a straight face, and always have to do something funny if a photographer points their lens in my direction. It’s part of my personality, I try to keep the mood light on a set while remaining professional. I love breaking the ice with silly faces and trying to keep people from feeling the nerves that can come in front of the camera, even with a group of professionals. *Where would you like to see your career in 5 years? - In 5 years I would like to be doing more travel for work honestly, working vacations is how I envision it, with a successful home-base hair + makeup studio in Minneapolis. Shooting editorial type pieces in different locations across the US and even around the world. But the studio here is necessary, I want a place that I can call “home” and that will likely always be Minneapolis for me. *What do you like most about working in the fashion/beauty editorial industry? – I love how it allows me to step outside my proverbial box of every day beauty and wedding work into the edgier more dramatic looks. It pushes me to get down and dirty with the creativity and breathes new life into my other work.
*What would you like to change? – I would love to see a bigger departure from the one-size-fits-all answers/options to fashion and beauty questions. There are definitely certain principles that can be taught (shape, shade/light, color theory) but every body, every face is unique and there are no cookie-cutter looks that work on everyone. *What is your most embarrassing fashion or beauty moment? - Getting ready one morning for a very early call time on a film (like 2:30am before coffee early) and going through my morning routine and not looking clearly at my products (I’m a custom mixer, even for my own face) and applying foundation that while I thought I looked good in the mirror, on the drive down to set I looked like an Oompa-Loompa from Willy Wonka’s factory. Not good when you’re supposed to be the one with the knowledge!
SARAH
ELIZABETH Q&A Continue Style *Who is your style icon? - Current: Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez Hepburn
All-Time: Bridget Bardot + Audrey
*If you had to choose a “uniform” to wear to work every single day what would it be? – Honestly, a t-shirt with
a message (TressieChic tees!), boyfriend jeans and a comfortable pair of boots/Dansko sandals. Beauty *What is your biggest beauty secret? - Start taking care of your skin BEFORE you start to see reasons to start. This means in your late teens set the precedent for the habit to stick. *What is your daily skincare routine? - Morning: Cream or Oil cleanse in the shower, serum + eye cream + moisturizer before (or instead of) makeup. Evening: Oil cleanse (or at least a good makeup wipe!), eye cream and night moisturizer. *Favorite Current Makeup or Hair Trend? - The return to skin looking like skin (pores, freckles and all!) and I still love a messy, effortless-looking updo. *Name your all time life-changing products? - Sonia Roselli’s Sex-A-Peel, Limelight’s Sotox, Tarte’s BB 12-Hour Primer, Viseart Eye Shadows. *Your late and have 15min to get ready! In a crunch, what are your morning must haves? – Limelight Sotox, Better than Sex Mascara, Black Kohl Liner and Tinted Lip Balm
LIFE *What’s a quote you live by? "People will stare. Make it worth their while." - Harry Winston *Biggest Inspiration in Life? - Anyone and everyone who is brave enough to go after what
they believe in. Whether in life, in love or in work. Those that look the fear (or disapproval) in the eye and say “So what!”
*Biggest Ah ha moment in life thus far? - That the only person in the world worth competing
against or comparing yourself to is you. So much struggle and depression disappears the moment you live your life or chase your dreams for you alone. *If you weren't in this industry you would be a.....probably a Bartender or a Chef Silly *Candy or Chocolate? - Anything Sour *Chocolate or Vanilla? - Mint *Coke or Pepsi? - Coke *Fall/Winter or Spring/Summer? - Fall/Winter *Wine or Whisky? - Beer *Movie or Live Music/Play? - Movie *Call or Text? - Call *Dogs or Cats? - Cats *Rock or Pop? - EDM *Facebook or Instagram? - Instagram

You & The Trend Report
*What is your favorite thing about The Trend Report-TwT Magazine? Showing local talent. Minnesota is a very creative market and its time the world sees it! *What made you want to collaborate with The Trend Report-TwT? Well, Tressie and I go way back. We've grown together so much and pushed each other so much over the last few years. It was only natural I would collaborate with her on this!
*What are you most passionate about? Depends on the day. Today it's modeling. Tomorrow it will be gardening. My passion for writing is slowly creeping back in as well.
*What do you love most about your job? Becoming another person as soon as the camera comes on. The lights start flashing and its an escape for me. I can leave my world and problems behind and just be in the moment. *How did you get into the field you're in and why? I was a waitress and a photographer came up to me and said "have you ever thought about modeling?" He connected me to an agency and the rest is history. The why part is hard to answer. I've always wanted to be a model but was afraid to pursue it.
* Where would you like to see your career in 5 years? I want to be represented in multiple markets playing the cool mom roles while still rocking an editorial every now and again.
*Where/How do you draw your inspiration from? Everywhere. I rarely can pinpoint where inspiration comes from. It's finding the extraordinary in present in the moment that really gets my brain moving.
the ordinary
and being
* What do you like most about working in the fashion/beauty editorial industry? The creativity, when I'm "allowed" to be creative. As a model, its understood that I am "the talent" and a lot of times my opinions aren't taken seriously, I don't voice my ideas anymore unless asked. When it comes to editorials its usually a little different I'm allowed to be me and do my job the way I see appropriate. I get to explore areas that are untouched within my self.
*What is your most embarrassing fashion or beauty moment? Tell us about it! Oh jeeze. Which one? From having underwear fly out of my bag in front of a client, to a client picking up a bag of mine and looking in it and finding a box of tampons, to walking down the runway with my dress on backwards, to loosing my shoe one the catwalk. I am an awkward person and its a surprise when something embarrassing doesn't happen to me!

A plain tee that's just the right amount of loose, my taupe vegan leather jacket, and jeans. It's comfy, warm, and easy. Sign me up. Beauty *What is your biggest beauty secret? Well, if I told you, then it wouldn't be a secret now would it? Just kidding I don't have one.

LIETZ Q&A
*What are you most passionate about? Bringing out the best in myself and inspiring others to do so as well *What do you love most about your job? Making the ideas I have in my head
come to life. *How did you get into the field you're in and why? I've always been into hairstyling and beauty. I have always learned with my hands and I knew I'd be a creative with whatever job I went into. It was either hairstyling or interior design. I chose hairstyling because I knew I'd find success no matter where I lived.
*What is that one thing which makes you different? I think what makes me different is that I know the industry from the inside as a model too. I know what it takes to create good editorial hair because of the modeling experience.
* Where would you like to see your career in 5 years? I don't live for the
future, so I won't answer that *Where/How do you draw your inspiration from? I get inspired by the whole look. From wardrobe first...then the models features and the makeup plan. Then I decide on what's best for hair. * What do you like most about working in the fashion/beauty editorial industry? I like the people and the energy and support I feel from them. * What would you like to change? I can only change myself…not others.
So I will figure out what I would like to change throughout time
*What is your most embarrassing fashion or beauty moment? Tell us about it! I'll answer the fashion aspect of the question: most models have probably done this at least once...I was modeling bridal on the runway and completely tripped on my dress. Thank goodness I didn't fall, but the whole crowd gasped and clapped when I recovered. So embarrassing

When you’re called to do something, it just happens organically. You don't even know it's happening some times. But when you find yourself pulled towards something with no script and all passion, do that.

I had just purchased this fly three piece suit. Everyone was dancing and having a ball. A dance circle formed and I jumped in the middle to drop it looooow. + Trend Report *What is your favorite thing about The Trend Report-TwT Magazine? Whats unique about The Trend Report is that its local and so expansive. You have so many creative individuals bringing organic ideas and talent to the table. It feels like a form of community under one forum.
Q&A
*What made you want to collaborate with The Trend Report-TwT? I was asked to work on specific projects that I have a vested interest in and am passionate about. *What are you most passionate about? The art of styling and taking different pieces and layering, cutting, and transforming them. Altering looks to make them aesthetically inspiring and taking individual pieces from vintage or thrift stores and mixing them with pieces off the rack.
*What do you love most about your job? The collaboration of working on a team. Networking with new people and building relationships with local designers and boutique owners. The excitement of looking at a finished product and knowing your inspiration and creativity has been manifested into something tangible.
*How did you get into the field you're in and why? I was already vintage and thrift shopping almost every day. Wearing clothes that I felt comfortable wearing that described by personal aesthetic. Looking for individual unique pieces nobody else was wearing became my drug. I started going to a lot of the MN fashion week events and many of the I AM events Sarah Edwards creates. I started building a family in the creative industry and within that comes collaboration.
*What is that one thing which makes you different? I will wear whatever I want anyplace if i have a personal belief in it. I honestly don't care what anyone thinks. * Where would you like to see your career in 5 years? I would love to be designing pieces on a small scale and wearing them. *Where/How do you draw your inspiration from? 1970 is my favorite time in style history. I really love oversized vintage pieces that I can layer and drape. I want to feel like i'm drowning in my clothes. I draw my inspiration from my imagination. I try and be in a different thrift store or vintage store 5-6 days a week to keep my closet and blog fresh and new. * What would you like to change about this industry? I always find it astounding to learn two friends of mine in two different creative circles haven't met. I work towards knowing as many people as possible but wish there was a way we could all inter-mingle a bit more.

COLLECTION REVIEW
Dries Van Noten S/S 2016 !87
Dries Van Noten A Hollywood love affair was the inspiration behind Noten’s spring-summer 2016 Collection. Using the image of Hollywood legend, Marilyn Monroe and Salvador Dali. Two major icons combined in one collection. So CHIC. Over-sized shirts with red lip embroideries, Marilyn Monroe’s face on coats and t-shirts, knits with lobster image – and all of that kept in a very romantic, super Parisian way. Leopard, glitz and palm trees. Relaxed and a hint of 1950s silhouettes. The collection delivered a lineup of loose, high-waist trousers, silk bomber jackets, oversize printed shirts, drawstring waisted shorts, sheer tops, and luxurious robes.

COLLECTION REVIEW
Bally Menswear S/S 2016

Pablo Coppola designed this S/S 2016 collection from Swiss fashion brand Bally. The designer showcased classic looks on very classic/ken doll almost looking models. He added interest and some fun to the designs with bright and slightly crazy elements, such as the yellow cloak made of ostrich leather, which certainly looks cool, but better not get caught in the rain.
Pablo Coppola notes that he likes when "young men
add retro to their style, and older men bring youth notes in a outfit.

SPRING 2016
PANTONE
FASHION COLORS
Colors this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves.
A Unisex Palette
Colors this season transcend cultural and gender norms. Vivid brights give way to excitement and optimism, though quiet stability prevails in this season’s palette. For Spring 2016 there are truly no perceivable distinctions in color choices between the men’s and women’s collections, both of which focus on a desire to breathe and reflect, then play.
!127

Rose Quart
A persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys
compassion and a
sense of composure.
Like a serene sunset,
flushed cheek or bud-
ding flower, Rose
Quartz reminds us to
reflect on our surround-
ings during the busy but lighthearted spring and summer months

Weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us,
Serenity comforts with a calming effect,
bringing a feeling of respite even in turbulent times. A transcendent blue, Serenity provides us with a naturally connected sense of space.
!129

A shade of aqua that leans toward the green family, Limpet Shell
is clear, clean and defined. Suggestive of clarity and freshness, its crisp and modern influences evoke a deliberate, mindful tranquility.
A maritime-inspired

blue, Snorkel Blue
plays in the navy family,
but with a happier, more energetic context. The
name alone implies a relaxing vacation and en-
courages escape. It is
striking yet still, with
lots of activity bursting
from its undertones.
!131

As in most any season, the need for neutrals arises. Essentially a basic, the subtlety of the lilac undertone in
Lilac Gray, adds a
distinctive edge to this classic gray shade

The high energy Fiesta is a harbinger of ex-
citement, encouraging
free-spirited exploration to unknown but wel-
coming locales. A
strong and fiery,
yellow-based red, the
vivid Fiesta provides a
stark contrast to the
calming, softer nature
of this season’s palette.
!133
The fashion & design
communities and
consumers have been in love with orange for several seasons.
Coming to the fore this
Spring is Peach Echo, a shade that emanates
friendlier qualities,
evoking warmth and accessibility. It is an
all-encompassing,
tempered
companion in the
playful orange family.

Green Flash calls on its

wearer to explore, push the envelope and escape the
mundane. Radiating an
openness that combines
with the rest of the palette in unexpected but
serendipitous ways. The popularity of this brilliant hue is
representative of
nature’s persistent
influence even in urban
environments. A trend
continuing to inspire
designers.
!135

While the majority of the Spring/Summer palette trends toward calmness, a few diverge from the theme emerge that offer a contrast. With
Buttercup, designers
reveal a shining beacon transporting its wearer to a happier & sunnier place.
A transitional color that will take us through the seasons,
Iced Coffee
manifests as another strong neutral for the season. With its natural earthy quality, the softness and subtlety of Iced Coffee creates a stable foundation when combined with the rest of this season’s palette.

TREND MAKEUP
Spring MAKEUP Fashion Inspired Trends that will shake up your makeup game. !161
GO FOR the BRONZE   Glow To Rock this TREND blend a warm cream bronzer and highlighter for a naturally tan sheen—the kind you'd find on a supermodel who's spent the season partying all over the world.

Pastel Tones These aren't your typical spring pastels. The soft shadow, radiant blush, and petal-toned lips at Dior and Rahul Mishra went above and beyond the idea of looking pretty in pink, while a lavender eye was the focal point at Veronique Leroy's show.
!163
Rainbow Brite Makeup
While the Colorful looks at Yohji Yamamoto, Manish Arora, Issey Miyake, and Vivienne Westwood aren't the most wearable options off the runway, the effects were nothing short of bold and beautiful against each designer's lineup.
Blue Eyes
Blue Streaked eyes were everywhere this season! Don’t be scared to try a more “wearable” version of this! Just go simple on your lip color/complexion.
!165

All About The Vamp Dark MOODY lips were the perfect complementing TREND for the darker/ edgier elements {black, leather, fur} on the spring runways this season.

Hair TRENDS to
ROCK !169

Working Girl Chic Stepping away from the out there hair, this look is really clean, defined and almost masculine with a deep side part. You can spray hairspray right at the roots for a wet, shiny finish. Move the can further away as you move down the head for a smooth transition that gives the hair a floating quality in the back.
Hair TRENDS to
Rock
Medium- To Long-length Man Hair
Given menswear’s current infatuation with two of history’s shaggiest-haired decades – that’s the 1970s and the 1990s, it’s not shocking that hair trends for men this spring are getting longer. It’s not a look for everyone. And we’re not just talking taste: you’ll need hair that falls slightly finer for a good crack at this look. Grow it out over time, braving those awkward in-between stages.
!171

Polished Braided Ponytail A simple, single braid down the back is a nod to the confident, sexy woman. Prep damp hair with thickening spray and rough dry with hands. Tie it into a ponytail before braiding for a clean look.
Big Shape & Contrast
This hair
TREND
is all about clear
contrast
between the
top and back and sides sections of your hair, along with plen-
ty of movement and shape. And, it’s probably going to get you noticed..

Feminine Tomboy A tomboyish 80's look. Similar to the deep side part of the working girl chic, this is a bit boy in front and girl in back. Create a slight peak in the front with gel and a comb and then leave it long and straight in the back.

Yiqing Yin Spring 2016 Couture Show
R U N WA Y R E V I E W
Yiqing Yin’s show was her first as a permanent member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. It is a major career high for Yin, who has been on the schedule since 2011 as an invited guest. She marked the occasion with collaborations, one with textile designer Coen Carstens, who worked on the laser-cut leather scales that appeared on the sleeves of a jacket, and another with sculptor Bastien Carré, who created the finale showstopper, featuring LED lights and piano strings! Her best work here was found in the long, draped jersey dresses. Wool or silk, sometimes suspended from strappy leather harnesses. Yes, very theatrical and a tad heavy handed at times, but this is Haute Couture. It is meant to be looked at as an expression of art and to show everyone what the designer can really do. FA S H I O N L E S S O N But what exactly is Haute Couture? A History lesson… {thanks Wikipedia!!}
H
aute couture can be referenced back as early as the 1700s. Rose Bertin, the French fashion designer to Queen Marie Antoinette, can be credited for bringing fashion and haute couture to French culture. French leadership in European fashion continued into the 18th century when influence was sourced from art, architecture, music, and fashions of the French court at Versailles were imitated across Europe. Visitors to Paris brought back clothing that was then copied by local dressmakers. Stylish women also ordered fashion dolls dressed in the latest Parisian fashion to serve as models. As railroads and steamships made European travel easier, it was increasingly common for wealthy women to travel to Paris to shop for clothing and accessories. French fitters and dressmakers were commonly thought to be the best in Europe, and real Parisian garments were considered better than local imitations. The couturier Charles Frederick Worth (October 13, 1826–March 10, 1895), is widely considered the father of haute couture as it is known today. Although born in Bourne, Lincolnshire, England, Worth made his mark in the French fashion industry. Revolutionizing how dressmaking had been previously perceived, Worth made it so the dressmaker became the artist of garnishment: a fashion designer. While he created one-of-a-kind designs to please some of his titled or wealthy customers, he is best known for preparing a portfolio of designs that were shown on live models at the House of Worth. Clients selected one model, specified colors and fabrics, and had a duplicate garment tailormade in Worth's workshop. Worth combined individual tailoring with a standardization more characteristic of the ready-to-wear clothing industry, which was also developing during this period. Following Worth's footsteps were , Patou, Poiret, Vionnet, Fortuny, Lanvin, Chanel, Mainbocher, Sc hiaparelli, Balenciaga, and Dior. Some of these fashion houses still exist today, under the leadership of modern designers.
In the 1960s, a group of young designers who had trained under men like Dior and Balenciaga left these established couture houses and opened their own establishments. Ted Lapidus, and Emanuel Ungaro. Japanese native and Parisbased Hanae Mori was also successful in establishing her own line. Lacroix is one of the fashion houses to have been started in the late 20th century. Other new houses have included Jean-Paul
The most successful of these young designers were Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, André Courrèges, Gaultier and Thierry Mugler. Due to the high expenses of producing haute couture collections, Lacroix and Mugler have since ceased their haute couture activities. Modernized haute couture shows are not designed and made to be sold, rather they are exactly what they are displayed for - for show. Instead of being constructed for the purpose of selling and making money, they are made to further the publicity, as well as perception and understanding of brand image. For all these fashion houses, custom clothing is no longer the main source of income, often costing much more than it earns through direct sales; it only adds the aura of fashion to their ventures in ready-towear clothing and related luxury products such as shoes and perfumes, and licensing ventures that earn greater returns for the company. Excessive commercialization and profit-making can be damaging, however. Cardin, for example, licensed with abandon in the 1980s and his name lost most of its fashionable cachet when anyone could buy Cardin luggage at a discount store. It is their ready-to-wear collections that are available to a wider audience, adding a splash of glamour and the feel of haute couture to more wardrobes

Fashion Week MN #FWMN With breathtaking creations and beautiful venue’s FWMN 2nd season (under new direction) was delightfully inspiring. Proving once again that the state has more “nice” things to offer than just the people. Coming in at number 6 on this years national creative vitality chart, MN breeds a different type of creative. I was almost overcome with emotion seeing these garments, being able to feel the sense of love and level of creativity and passion in each stitch. It was hard to narrow it down to showcase just a few of these said creations. For the full collections please take the time to view the showcasing designers/shows.
