Message from the Chancellor This year is no exception. Another year of releasing empowered men and women into different spheres of society to become World Changers! As I consider all the years of preparations taken to bring TCA to the level of excellence demonstrated by our President, Dr Wilson Teo, and all of the dedicated faculty, who are the face and heart of this College, I rejoice at God’s faithfulness. However, it is now time for all of us to step up and herald the existence of our College so that many others, from both overseas and locally, can receive an excellent education in a spiritually-charged environment. TCA College is more than a Bible School. We offer courses and degrees that will equip students for the workplace as well as the different forms of ministry. Many of our graduates have become successful in businesses while others have become Presidents of Bible Schools or leaders in their denominations back in their home countries.

tca college

Leadership is crucial in today’s world. What better school than TCA to prepare people to become leaders for the challenging times ahead of us. Training students to think, plan, and hear from God for direction is critical. The world needs strategic leaders who will be bold in the Holy Spirit and dare to do great exploits for God. The day of miracles is still here – the need for leaders who will lead is the cry of God for this generation.

4

To those graduating, we offer our sincere prayers and best wishes for great success in all that you undertake in the years ahead. You are one step closer to your destiny. Now, call others to follow in your footsteps. Together in His Kingdom Rev. Dr Naomi Dowdy

Message from the Vice-Chancellor

‫ྲྀڴ‬ӑ྘༗

Let me offer my heartfelt congratulations to all 2013 graduating students of TCA College. This is truly a significant day. It is the day that marks the beginning of a new chapter in your walk with God. I am certain that God has exciting plans for each of you.

Be a Seeker of God who will constantly desire and encounter God on a deeper personal level. Allow His presence to grant you fresh revelation and convict your hearts each day to transform the world for Christ. Be a Leader of Integrity. Guard your hearts and minds against the growing narcissism, complacency, and cynicism of this world. The world will challenge you but may your faith and actions work together to testify of your faith in God. Be Centered on God’s Word. Abide in His righteousness in everything that you do. It will be an uphill battle for God’s people in times where the lines are blurred. But let His Word illuminate your paths and let the Word bring peace, hope, faith, and love to you.

As you begin your next foray into ministry:

7

Message from the President Congratulations to all the students who have fulfilled the academic requirements and withstood the rigor to be called 2013 graduates of TCA College! As you arrive at this important milestone in your journey of faith, allow me to exhort you with a passage from the book of Timothy. 1 Timothy 4:15-16 (NIV) Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

tca college

Firstly, Paul exhorted his spiritual son to “watch your life and doctrine closely”. In the same manner, I want to exhort you to do the same as you serve the Lord in church or the marketplace. The truths of God you have learnt in class discussions, assignments, and personal

8

reflections must not remain just cognitive knowledge. Allow these truths to watch over your life, guide you in your ministry, and protect you from the evil schemes and temptations that will come your way. Allow God’s truths to determine your behavior and values that you will live out amongst those whom you are serving. Never be afraid to live differently from those around you as a result of living out God’s Word in your life. As you persevere in living out these godly truths, it will bring strength to you and inspire those you serve. Secondly, as you watch over your lives, ensure that you are constantly filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. Never allow your ministry to be functioning out of the flesh but always keep a daily communion with the Holy Spirit. Let your ministry be one where it is not by might nor by power, but by the Spirit of God (Zechariah 4:6). As you embark on this exciting journey ahead of you, with God’s Word and the power of His Holy Spirit, you will be amazed by what God will do through you! Rev. Dr Wilson Teo

Message from the Dean

School of Counseling This year’s graduation will see the largest cohort with 23 students graduating with a Postgraduate Diploma in Counseling (PDC) awarded by the University of Wales and 9 students graduating with the Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC) degree awarded by TCA College. 3 of our MAC graduates also graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Counseling awarded by the University of Wales. Congratulations! It is a landmark year indeed with so many counseling students graduating and bringing our School of Counseling to a new level of maturity!

tca college

All our PDC graduates took the challenge upon themselves to be part of the final cohort while still holding a full time job, taking up to 3 modules per term! This was quite an amazing feat and I must congratulate each one of them who persevered through the 18 months to eventually clear all the requirements! Well done!

10

With the ending of the validation by the University of Wales, we are proud to announce that PDC degree will be awarded by TCA College and recognized by the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC). Our students were assigned to various Family Service Centres, counseling centers, and

halfway houses to conduct counseling with clients. Many of our students received outstanding commendations by their site supervisors and clinical supervisors for their skills and proficiency in handling their cases. Several have already been offered full-time jobs as counselors. Kudos to all our practicum students, you have made TCA College proud! Our counseling programs continue to attract interest among Christians locally and overseas due to our two-pronged emphasis: being faith-integrated and skills-focused. My encouragement to each of our 2013 PDC and MAC graduates is for your experience in the School of Counseling at TCA College to continue to enrich you as a person, empower you in your practice, and encourage you in your development as a professional counselor! The blessings of God be upon you and your counseling practice! Rev. Sam Kuna

Message from the Dean

School of Creative Arts

I would like to leave you some thoughts from Philippians 3:12-14. The “pressing on” that the Apostle Paul is talking about is to pursue a goal or have a purpose in mind. This pursuit should never be passive but should always be active. Jim Wilson says it succinctly, “You can’t go for the goal if you are living in the past… You can’t press on if you are living in yesterday.” Paul knew he could not be caught up in past accomplishments, but be like a runner and press forward toward the finishing line. While it is good to set tangible and realistic goals, the biggest goal we should set our eyes on should be for the purpose of the prize. Paul wanted to win the heavenly prize, which could only be received when he would see Him face to face. He was determined, dedicated

and focused on fulfilling just that. He also wanted to continue to grow in his understanding and knowledge of God. Now that you are graduating, let it not be a stage where you feel you have reached the pinnacle in your spiritual journey. My prayer for each one of you is to constantly pursue Christ-likeness (Ephesians 5:1-2) and righteousness (1 Timothy 6:11). I would also like to encourage you to be the salt and light of the world (Matthew 5:13-16) and point people to Him. May you always remain teachable, pliable and grow into all that He has in store for you. Therefore, while this is a graduation, it is also a commencement of the greater things He has in store for you. Keep pursuing Him, shine for Him and bloom wherever you are planted! Rev. Paul David Acting Dean

pacesetters 2013

Congratulations to all graduating students on completing this part of the journey in your lives. It has been great to see how you have all grown in your walk with God. We at TCA College are proud of each one of you and our greatest joy will be to see each of you constantly allow Him to work in and through your life.

Message from the Dean

School of Theology (English) Praise the Lord for the year 2013! It has been another year of walking in faith and witnessing God’s grace for the School of Theology (English). There are three things in particular that I wish to thank God for in this brief message.

tca college

First, I rejoice in the fact that our school has received reaccreditation of all our programs for the next five years. Both the English and Chinese programs underwent a rigorous reaccreditation exercise by the Asia Theological Association. This involved an evaluation of our academic standards, practices and resources as well as interviews with the College leadership, faculty, administrative staff, students and alumni. The reaccreditation attests to the quality education offered by our school. The reaccreditation report also commended the faculty for its “creative teaching and commitment to accomplish the training objectives of the College” and highlighted the dedication and hard work of our administrative staff. It is truly a blessing to be part of this team of committed faculty and staff.

12

Secondly, I give thanks for the number of international students that God has drawn to the school. We currently have students from Germany, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam studying alongside Singaporeans. This cultural

milieu permits a vigorous exchange of perspectives and ideas so students have a grasp of what God is doing all over the world. It also enables the school to fulfill its missions mandate to train and release leaders who will bring transformation globally. I am praying that God will bring even more international students so that we may increase our global impact. Thirdly, I congratulate all the graduands who have strived and completed their programs of study. You have drunk deep from the wells of Scripture, grown in your understanding of theology and sharpened practical competencies for ministry. You have been a blessing to the other students and to all of us in the TCA College family. My reminder to you is that the journey of learning continues on even as you embark into the next phase of ministry. Always carry the humble posture of a student and lean on the Holy Spirit to guide you through the dynamic adventure of ministry. May God use you to establish, expand, and extend His Kingdom. Rev. Dennis Lum

The Student Council ࿘഻ৠൡ߾ It has been said that the time spent in school is the best time of one’s life. It is indeed a blessing to study in TCA College. TCA College is committed to provide a nurturing environment for students to grow, both in the written and the living Word. This goal is achieved through an excellent curriculum taught by committed lecturers and activities that encourage students to live out what they have learnt. As leaders and representatives of the student body, the Student Council plays a supportive role toward the same goal by organizing events and activities that promote Christian community life.

meetings, plans informal outings, helps to induct new students, and cares for the welfare of the student body. It is hoped that through interacting with and caring for one another, students will be molded and grow in spirituality, maturity and character. The education received, lessons gleaned and relationships formed in TCA College will no doubt last beyond the time spent here. Lives that have been impacted and transformed here will certainly touch the lives of many others wherever the students are placed. As I come to the end of my three-year program here, I think that school can indeed be the best time of one’s life. Therefore, I affirm: “School life in TCA College is the best time of our lives.” Toni Er Puay Hoon President, Student Council

Cultural Night ໛ߌᆵ၈

tca college

Cultural Night is a time for all students to come together with the faculty and staff to know each better through various performances and, more importantly, Singaporeans’ favorite pasttime: eating!

24

Each small group brought a dish local to a specific country. There was food from Malaysia (Nonya Kueh), China (Dumplings), Taiwan (Black peanuts), United States (Alfero ice-cream and brownies) and Mexican (Nachos). For some present that night, it was the first time tasting these dishes, making it a spread to remember. The feasting was followed by a time of worship led by in-house foodie Luke Ng and his team, ushering God’s presence in English, Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia songs. Student Vice President Daniel Topf then led the parade of nations and prayer for the nations represented by the cohort. These included

Germany, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, India, Philippines, United States of America, South Korea, Brunei, and Singapore. Then, in line with this year’s theme-Bible in Songs-the small groups had to put their best foot forward to showcase Bible stories in songs. Each English-speaking small group was paired with a Mandarinspeaking one to make the event even more multilingual. The end result? The performances showcased the many talents TCA students possess. Everything from the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, to current Korean sensation, Psy, made an appearance through the participants’ ingenuity and giftings. This shows that our students not only study hard, but they sing and act with a gusto too!

Cohesion Day ࿘ᄅ৻ၹಸ

tca college

“Life Together!” No theme was more apt than that of Cohesion Day 2013. It was a day when the bonding of lives, from diverse cultures and backgrounds, was celebrated. Right from the start of the day, there was a buzz of excitement in the air; even a drizzle during our bus ride to the venue could not dampen the buoyant mood.

26

Cohesion Day this year was held at Marina Barrage. With the scenic Singapore landscape as our backdrop, we were ready to have some fun! Ice-breaker games like “Fire, Hunter, Earthquake” and “Captain on Deck” brought smiles to every face. By this time, if there was any ice that had yet to melt, the blazing sun made sure that it quickly vanished. In the intense heat, we began our team games with “The Picture Game,” whereby each team was given a photograph and was tasked to strike

a pose as similar to it as possible. Creativity exploded in some teams – imitating boys playing football, one of the teams created a human ball that rolled on the ground! Surrendering to the sun, we retreated to the shelter to continue the rest of our day. While having a wonderful lunch as teams, each team had to come up with a team cheer. This was probably the biggest challenge yet: communicating effectively and conjuring up a cheer which everyone in the team could agree and be part of. The teams’ presentation of their team-cheer was most enjoyable. After all, how often do you get to see your lecturers cheering and dancing with no restraint? In the last game, the team members formed a single line with masking tape linking them together, on the bottom of our left and right

We ended the day with writing positive remarks about each of our teammates on a piece of paper. It was a sweet experience and a great conclusion to the day. At TCA College, we have people from many different countries, speaking different languages, and with different customs. Nonetheless, the spirit of love in Christ Jesus has bonded us together, to live and grow together after the motto of the Cohesion Day, “ Life Together!”

Vietnam Missions Trip

VIETNAM LAOS

CAMBODIA

tca college

Each year, TCA College sponsors a student mission trip in support of our purpose statement to provide ministerial training that will equip students to be responsible Christian leaders in promoting the mission of the church.

28

This year, a team of three was sent to help fulfill this purpose by teaching an apologetics class at a Bible school in Vietnam. Dr Richard Goetz, a TCA lecturer in theology, led a team of two TCA students from the Master of Divinity program – Richard Ong

and Daniel Topf – to Ho Chi Minh City where they conducted a two-week intensive course in Christian apologetics to 19 eager Vietnamese students. Flying in on a Monday in mid-April, the three were met at the airport and welcomed to Vietnam by a staff from the Bible school. Richard and Daniel had the privilege of staying with the Vietnamese students in the school’s dormitory and sharing daily life with them, which turned out to be a great experience and tremendous blessing. Early morning personal prayer and calisthenics helped kickstart the day, followed by a delicious local breakfast. The daily student-led chapel services were also uplifting. The spiritual discipline of the students was a blessing to the team, challenging them in their faith and reminding them that missions and learning always go both ways. While Dr Goetz taught the majority of the apologetics course, Richard and Daniel, who had taken the course at TCA and prepared in advance, both taught one

The team was also blessed to have the opportunity to preach and share during the weekend in different churches around the city. Traveling to those churches by riding pillion on a motorbike through winding, bustling streets was an adventure in itself! Richard and Daniel shared at Saturday evening youth meetings and all three team members preached in separate churches on Sunday. Some of the congregations met in their own building while others in house churches, but all shared a love for Jesus Christ and a passion for sharing the good news. Throughout this mission, the team experienced a genuine spiritual hunger among the Vietnamese Christians. It was a true blessing to be with them, to hear

their testimonies of faith in Christ and see their faith in action. Often the case on mission trips, the team humbly realized they were the ones most blessed through the experience. The three-member team gratefully acknowledged and appreciated the leadership and assistance of TCA College in providing this open door for teaching and preaching. It is their hope that more such teaching and learning mission opportunities will be available for TCA students in the future.

section of the course for an entire day, amounting to five hours of teaching. For the two, it was an exciting experience teaching students in the last semester of their degree studies. On their part, the students were enthusiastic learners and active in classroom activities such as small group discussions.

Theological Reflection Theological Education as Andragogy for Sociality

tca college

My thoughts here dwell around the idea that theological education should move from being pedagogy (child-education) to andragogy (adult-education). This conviction is because I believe Asia is a huge repository of philosophical, cultural, and religious resources that theological education can harness to address the various and complex issues that Western theology cannot sufficiently address. This warrants a mature appreciative inquiry. Theological education in Asia should be firmly rooted in its own soil if it is to make sense at all in Asia.

32

Out of this conviction, I draw another conclusion: that theological education should adequately prepare students to find answers amidst their life and ministry struggles. If theological education equips students with the ability to ask questions and question the questions, ask why and why not, raise objections and object the objections, then it has achieved its purpose. Questions that drive my lectures include “Are these lectures compatible with the reality of the church in a society that is pluralistic in terms of culture, ethnicity, religion, and denomination?” “Is there room for mutual fecundation between

theological education and society?” “Am I equipping my students to face the real world with real human beings and real challenges?” In a classroom setting, first the lessons are offered and finally a test is given, whereas in real life, first a test is given and then a lesson is learnt. I am curious over whether students are prepared for this test? Can they ask questions, not necessarily content-centric, but life-centric? I consider theological education as a “Life Science”. My interest, therefore, is not pedagogy, but andragogy. How are the students, who are going to be ministers and leaders in an adult world (the church included), prepared to meet life’s challenges? Life Science - theological education - needs life skills to prepare for life’s trials and not just for the final exam. The need is integration, for a holistic theological education. Theological education has to be integral instead of being compartmentalized, inclusive, and integrated. Sociology, psychology, anthropology, cultural anthropology, religion and society, church polity, and politics all need to be well knit into the theological education with a view to empower students to engage in society.

To use Schleiermacher’s w ord s, theological education is “education for community”. Societyat-large is the first and the foremost stakeholder of theological education. Andragogy, I submit, should be a learning that situates students – at least for six months while studying – in the context of their present and prospective ministries, as well as in contexts they have not thought about so far, so that they will be able to perceive what the context demands and how to apply their classroom learning to address those needs.

School of Theology English (SOTE) Seminars

Growing a Healthy Church by Dr Robert Coleman

34

SOTE was privileged to have Dr Robert Coleman speak on the topic “Growing a Healthy Church” on June 11, 2012. Dr Coleman is the Distinguished Professor of Evangelism and Discipleship at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, U.S. He also served as Dean of the Billy Graham International Schools of Evangelism as well as Director of the Billy Graham Center Institute of Evangelism at Wheaton College. Dr Coleman is best known for the classic The Master Plan of Evangelism, a widely-read book laden with principles on world evangelization. The seminar was targeted to help pastors and church leaders. Dr Coleman shared from his vast experience, as illustrated by the nine interwoven

and proven principles needed to ensure the spiritual health of the church. By following and contextualizing these principles, churches will experience tangible growth to the praise and glory of God. For him, a healthy church is a growing church, both in maturing in Christ (sanctification) and in outreach (evangelism).

Dr Coleman’s own personal spiritual life is infectious. I am empowered by this seminar. The concepts and plenteous references to the Bible, along with personal examples, spur us to a life unto Christ.

Apart from the normal classes offered by SOTE, the faculty regularly organizes special seminars and conferences for the public. Through these seminars, it aims to make the Bible relevant and offer practical insights in areas of prayer, relationships, spiritual growth and service to God. Some of the more recent seminars are highlighted below.

Signs and Wonders for Today? by Sis. Lily Lim On October 19, 2012, Lily Lim presented the topic “Signs and Wonders for Today?” She teaches Asian Religions and Missions subjects at TCA College and is currently completing her Doctor of Missiology with Fuller Theological Seminary in The United States.

The speaker keeps emphasizing the need to go back to God’s Word and reminds us that miracles happen for a purpose.

The Mystery of Grace by Dr Babu Immanuel Dr Babu Immanuel teaches the New Testament at TCA College. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of London and has several published books and journal articles to his name. Given his

Dr Immanuel briefly outlined the understanding of the human condition according to different belief systems and philosophies. These point to the human condition of hopelessness, to the incapacity to free itself from the bondage, and the need of a god-figure to liberate man. Against this backdrop, certain biblical narratives such as the story of David, Mary, and the parable of the lost son were explored in detail, together with enthusiastic participation from the attendees. In the end, the “mystery” of grace was not resolved, because it is an evidence of the grand continuum of God’s salvation plan for humankind and we should be grateful to Him who bestows His grace on us.

The topic is very good and the content covered, interesting. I like the mix of theory, history and application. The way the seminar ended was extremely powerful.

pacesetters 2013

Lily explained that the miracles in the Bible do not occur in the past, but continue to be witnessed in the signs and wonders appearing in many parts of Asia and the world. They have resulted in enormous church growth, thus dispelling the myth that biblical miracles no longer exist today.

background, he handily presented the seminar topic “The Mystery of Grace” on February 23, 2013. The purpose of the seminar was to help participants understand the idea of grace that, according to him, “defies all definitions and continues to be a mystery, particularly in view of the lack of sufficient rationale why it is conferred at all, especially on undeserving beneficiaries”.

The seminar explored the work of God in the Book of Acts, especially highlighting scripture references pointing to miracles that subsequently led to conversions to Christ. Some of the key questions she addressed include “Is there a connection between signs and wonders and the multitudes which are added to the Lord?” and “Are signs and wonders normative for the church today?”

Dominic Yeo began the seminar with an opening speech to the 150 participants. The seminar aimed to train and educate church pastors, leaders, professionals and volunteers who work with children and youths. Representatives from churches, voluntary welfare organizations, family service centers and officials from the

Ministry of Social and Family Development attended the full-day seminar. Rev. Dr Laurie Vervaecke was the main speaker at the seminar. She is a licenced Clinical Pastoral Counselor with the National Christian Counseling Association and a Member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. Her in-depth biblical, professional and practical teaching promoted the need to instil values in communities, and not to tolerate abuse toward children. She emphasized the crucial need for Christian leaders to be strategically placed to provide

The seminar enabled participants to develop a conscious awareness of complex issues faced by vulnerable children. It also equipped the participants with skills necessary to address the various needs in areas where work with children are involved. The topics covered by the seminar addressed biblical perspectives and why it matters that abuse be understood as well as the vital role that leaders in the faith play in helping victims of abuse. The obligation of the church was also addressed so that the safety of children can be ensured while they are under the care of the church volunteers. Participants were given a self-audit tool to set up certain key guidelines that represent the minimum standard required in the provision of services, activities, and arrangements in order to ensure children are safeguarded. This was

crucial in helping participants to implement, train, inform, and communicate good policies and practices in ensuring the safety and protection of children. Feedback from seminar participants indicated the need to be well-informed on measures which can be taken to ensure the protection of children. The presence of officials from the Ministry of Social and Family Development added to the importance of child protection and the need to take concrete steps to implement child protection policies, procedures and practices in churches and other voluntary organizations. The Q & A session at the close of the seminar benefited participants who were offered practical examples of how to re-habilitate offenders and prevent recurrence of abuse. We look forward to the development of more platforms within the Church and Christian community that promote the message of protecting children. Audrey Yeo

Graduates’ Reflections р၄഻‫ۓ‬စ Cherie Ong (SOTE) My journey at TCA College was marked by the highs of learning and accumulating new experiences, and the lows of anguish during assignment and exam periods. I enjoyed the engagement with lecturers and questions raised about my faith that I was driven to answer. I also experienced personal breakthroughs both in my relationship with God and the way I ministered to people in the church. I thank God for this amazing adventure and opportunity to grow at TCA! Regina Fluckiger (SOTE) TCA College has played a significant role in building my theological foundation and knowledge. It was here that my worldview of Christianity was broadened and I met many wonderful people who will continue to journey through life with me.

Audrey Yeo (SOC) The counseling theories, clinical skills modules and integration of spirituality in my training as a counselor have enabled me to be professionally equipped to take a diagnostic view of counseling issues. I have made an excellent choice to study at TCA College as I have been greatly blessed and enriched!
