It is like the disciples who were following and learning from Jesus. Your graduation is taking place in one of the most disruptive times in Suddenly, their routine was disrupted by His crucifixion. history. Governments, economies, education, warfare, the rise of more national dictators, and the mandate of the Church have all This demands a new been shaken to a new level. This breed of leaders demands a new breed of who can engage leaders who can engage and transform these disruptive and transform these

However, He rose from the dead – and hope was rekindled. He then shockingly said, “I am going away. The works that I have been doing, you are to now do.” Everything, all their plans, assumptions of their tasks, understanding of their power and assignment, was flipped upside down.

Graduates, I sense you are much like the disciples of Jesus’ day. You have been learning and doing. You have had pre-conceived thoughts about your tomorrows, but God is calling you to a new revelatory level of leadership. Like the disciples, you do not have the luxury of time to adjust, because the “time is now.” As suddenly as the disruption has come, now just as quickly you must assume your calling and anointing now. You must rise up as God’s leaders – to bring the church into alignment with God’s agenda – preparing for the Lord’s return. Your studies at TCA and your growth in the Holy Spirit has prepared you for “such a time as this.” Remember the authority of Emmanuel, God with you, who will release miracles for such a time as this. My congratulations to each of you. My prayer is that you will seize your God-given future.

LEADERSHIP MESSAGES

As you start this new season, stand firm on your God-given mandate. Seek every opportunity to be ministers of reconciliation, messengers of grace, and the physical manifestation of agape love.

REV DOMINIC YEO

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE

While we have been deflated and discouraged, we are not defeated.

Dear Graduates

As you start this new season, stand firm on your God-given mandate. Seek every opportunity to be ministers of reconciliation, messengers of grace, and the physical manifestation of agape love.

Commencement ceremonies are significant because they represent points of transition – the completion of one season and the start of another. As you launch into a new season of Kingdom impact and Kingdom expansion, know that God commissions you with His power, authority, and anointing. The world is undergoing transition through the battle with COVID-19. In this environment of continued uncertainty, your role as godly leaders is vital to your spheres of influence.

COVID-19 is but one sign that we are in the last days. All the more, we need to arise as God’s representatives, to carry His mandate, and to preach and bring the Good News to the ends of the earth. These past two years, you have been stretched and challenged like never before. Churches and ministries have been challenged. Yet, we press on because the world we live in is desperate for hope. You have persevered through countless changes and online classes, because you have held on to God’s divine call upon your life. While we have been bent and battered, we are not broken. 06 I P A C E S E T T E R S

Be men and women who are Word-based, Christ-inspired, and Spirit-led in every endeavor. Serve with all courage, for our God is bigger than whatever challenges the world can throw at us. Above all things, dare to redefine the new normal to be a life of shalom. Don’t settle for restoration to the same old, same old. Be a people who seek Biblical restoration where God brings us and our world into a better state!

REV DR DENNIS LUM (

My heartiest congratulations

to the graduating class of 2022 on completing your studies! You have persevered through a season dedicated to equipping yourself to better serve others and TCA College is proud to witness your success. I offer you the following exhortations as you move onward in pursuing God’s call to vocational ministry. First, make effort to cultivate godly relationships. In the Pauline letters, we learn that it is essential for the body of Christ to encourage one another, build one another up, even bear one another’s burdens. This is especially true as you seek to serve God as a counselor, marketplace leader, or church minister. It is often difficult to

share the challenges of ministry with others. The friendships forged in your time here at TCA can provide you with this vital support. Continue to cultivate these spiritual friendships and always make time to spur one another on in your faith journey. Second, continue to build your ministry on godly instruction. The very first Psalm describes one who delights in God’s Word as a fruitful tree planted beside a life-giving stream. Your studies at TCA afforded you the opportunity to do this. Press on in this spiritual discipline to delve deep into Scripture, encounter the God of the Bible, and imbibe of God’s wisdom. Finally, continue to make use of the resources at TCA to develop yourself and your ministry. Make

In 2021, we celebrated

when the School of Counseling received confirmation from the Singapore Association for Counseling (SAC) that the Course Recognition of our Master of Arts in Counseling Program was endorsed for four more years (May 2021 – April 2025)! Receiving a four-year recognition is a strong validation that you, our students, have given strong and positive feedback about your learning journey in SOC. This recognition also commends the faculty (resident and adjunct) who have invested and excelled in providing professional training and competencies for our MAC students. We praise the LORD for this SAC Course Recognition Review process that helps all of us in the School of Counseling to ensure that the MAC program meets all the required benchmarks for counselor education in Singapore. We especially thank the faculty and counselors who prepared the documents, and the students who made themselves available for the interviews and

Congratulations to the SOC Graduating Batch 2022 especially for braving the Core Clinical Skills class in 2020 and Practicum in 2021 through the height of the pandemic. It was a huge challenge to be trained with counseling and attending skills via video conference. What was more challenging was that you could only counsel your clients via video conference as well! Each one of you worked tirelessly, selflessly, and excelled beyond expectations! You are now numbered among the trained professional faith-based counselors in Singapore! My prayer is for you to find your place in the professional sector, excel in your professionalism, be empowered in your practice, and enriched as a person!

“Oh give thanks

to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!” (Psalm 118:1). This familiar refrain echoes in my heart as I looked back at the steadfast love of God for the school and for you. Despite the ongoing COVID-19 challenges, God empowered us and our school to provide quality theological training to equip ministers and laity for Kingdom purposes. To remain committed in a world that is constantly changing, we began offering more new courses and revamping existing ones in 2021. A student taking the new Biblical Theology of Missions online course commented that the course is “relevant to my ministry and my responsibility as a Christian. It has helped to reshape my thinking.” In the Servant Leadership class, a student remarked that the lecturer “challenges me to reflect on my personal growth as a

leader. It is also strongly reflected in the assignment work.” Outside of regular classes, we provided opportunities for students to present their papers to the SOTE community for learning and academic engagement. This year, in the Academic Huddle, three students presented interesting topics ranging from Pentecostalism on Female Leadership, to Ancient Israel’s Worldview of Subjugation,” and Vygotsky vs Piaget’s Approaches to Learner-Centered Church Education. We hoped to see more student engagements and open the Huddle to the SOTE alumni in the near future. We are excited about the development of our online programs. Work is almost complete - we will be launching a new Master of Arts in Christian Studies (MACS) program in 2023. This program will be fully online and

their need for the abiding work of the Holy Spirit. You have gained much from the many hours invested in research and study. You have had rich interactions with your cohort and the faculty— critiquing one another’s views, expanding one another’s perspectives, and learning from one another’s experiences. Even so, may your confidence as a leader not rest on your learnedness but on the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. DEAN OF STUDENTS’ MESSAGE

STUDENT LIFE

Heartiest congratulations

to all graduates! Today, on your graduation day, you hold in your hand the scroll that testifies of your commitment, excellence, hard work, and perseverance towards your education in TCA College. Beyond that, I believe you hold in your heart the intimate transforming work that God has done in you, and you hold in your mind the fond memories of the things you did and the people you met in the college. C.S Lewis said in The Four Loves: “Friendship, I have said, is born at a moment when one man says to another ‘What! You too? I thought that no one but myself.…’” Indeed, no one is alone in the body of Christ. TCA is a place where kindred friendships are formed because you are on the same learning journey to explore fresh perspectives and experience new ways of doing things with one another. During this exciting and rigorous journey,

friendships were born and formed as you supported one another as a friend who loves at all times (Prov 17:17), by sticking closer than a brother (Prov 18:24), and offering earnest counsel (Prov 27:9). These friendships are precious – continue to nurture them, spurring and cheering one another on as you run the race that God has prepared for you. As you graduate, the friends who journeyed with you in TCA will no longer be by your side. But there is one Friend who always remains close – Jesus has “called you friends” (John 15:14-15). Jesus has called you friends because He desires to make known to you what He is doing so that you can “go and bear fruit” (John 15:16) in the things that He has appointed for you. So, friends, abide in the One who calls you friend and nurture the kindred friendships you made in TCA, that you might be fruitful wherever God places you!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I 2021

Bobby Oh

VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I Coming onboard as the Vice-President of the Student Council of 2021 was something I was looking forward to upon receiving the notice. It seemed like there were many possibilities and opportunities to do something for the students of TCA. I hoped for a community where students look out for one another, even after graduation. Thinking that it would be similar to planning committees in church, I soon realized that I had to learn to work with brothers and sisters in Christ from other churches. Unity might seem straightforward and more easily achieved due to the cultures that are already in place in a ministry, but when a committee of believers from different churches and denominations with different working styles come together, there is a need to be intentional in setting a culture and working together, recognizing that we are all blessed with different talents and experiences that can come together to serve God as one body. This has helped me to better understand what it means to work in unity, and how much good and blessing can come when God’s children come together to build His kingdom instead of our own. ABOUT TCA

Small Groups VANESSA PHUA Returning to school as a full-time student after 24 years brought about much apprehension about coping and adaptation to student life. Thankfully, the small group system of TCA College provided an environment of support and encouragement. Thanks to the sharing of fellow group members, there were many moments I felt that I was not alone on this learning journey. The opportunity to serve in the Student Council enriched my student life, creating a deeper sense of connectivity to the school and fellow students.

Although our small group had to meet over video conference for most of 2021, we’ve had many good memories. One of my favorite memories was when we all laughed so hard while playing an online game. I love that this small group can be authentic and real while sharing and yet have fun, and even be silly at other times. Miss you guys!

As part of the Student Council, I had the chance to learn from others and develop skills that have helped me greatly in proposing creative ideas and collaborating with other council members. I also became more confident as I began to lead and facilitate the small group.

As a member of the council and a small group leader, I have experienced exceptional acceptance from both platforms, and assistance from individuals whenever I required it. An even more surprising element was that being involved in both groups opened up opportunities for me to pick up some interpersonal, communication, planning and even IT skills that were necessary for keeping up with the academic calendar. In addition, friendships with individuals bloomed in the midst of serving together, for which I am thankful for.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Academic Huddle The launch of the first Academic Huddle by the School of Theology (English) in early 2020 has provided our students a new platform for academic mentoring through paper presentation and discussion on theological topics relevant to today’s world. We speak to students who share their thoughts about the Academic Huddle with us and how it has impacted them.

The preparation for the presentation allowed me to go deeper into my research about the Hebrews’ understanding of God (and gods) in the Old Testament. This made for a more engaging learning experience as revisiting the paper gave me a different perspective on the topic. It was both challenging and fulfilling to distill my research to just the key points and make it easy for the audience to understand.

CHRISTINE WU (Master of Arts in Ministry)

Another key highlight is the questions posed by my fellow students and TCA faculty members on contemporary issues of religion and violence, as seen in our world today. They were intriguing and helped me realize that my research into the Old Testament is still very much relevant in today’s world and culture. As a part time student, my interactions with other students and faculty can be quite limited - especially when most of our classes were held over video conference. However, interesting story – it was through the huddle that I reconnected with an old Junior College classmate after losing touch for years, thanks to her recent enrollment in TCA! I also enjoyed how both faculty and students actively engaged with the presentation and the topic. Everyone was courteous and I enjoyed their contributions to the discussion through the Q&A session.

38 I P A C E S E T T E R S

Being chosen to present at the Academic Huddle on a topic of my passion has helped to affirm my God-given gifting in church education and teaching. In preparing for the presentation, with the help of my lecturer Dr Cheong, I have learned to cover all angles possible in the hope of making it an enjoyable and worthwhile session for my fellow students. It was a fruitful presentation done over video conference. The responses by other students to my presentation added to my repertoire of inquiry angles. Their own sharing of contexts and experiences have also helped me appreciate the learning and application. I was also very encouraged by text messages from fellow students sharing with me that they have been blessed by my sharing. I especially enjoyed the Q&A segment where the Huddle transited into a discussion rather than a one-way presentation. Not only did it help to address an inquiry that had not been covered extensively in the presentation, but it also gave me the opportunity to interact with different viewpoints. I believe every question is an idea that is formulated by a complex worldview of a singular person and deserves to be interacted with well.

GIDEON REN

(Master of Divinity)

Academic Huddles have helped in my learning journey by presenting the work of some of the brightest and sharpest students in TCA. Watching them present their work, I found myself getting caught up in their enthusiasm and excellence.

RICO VENTURA (Master of Divinity)

I enjoyed listening to the various questions posed by fellow students and faculty members. The questions alone allow for more thoughts to be developed, revealing diversity of thinking. It has also helped broaden my mind as I get to see different takes on the same assignment. The questions also provide a platform for internal clarification for students, offering a voice for many who may have never dared to ask them in lectures.

Friends Who Warm Your Heart in a Pandemic Despite the many restrictions and disruptions brought about by the pandemic, beautiful friendships were formed, and ties were strengthened as students supported and encouraged one another. helpful to them, especially during the pandemic when we may not be able to meet so often.

ODETTE TAN I recalled that as a new student it was difficult to ease into student life again, and I was thankful whenever I received help from my seniors. I wanted to do the same for new students, by coaching them on the use of the learning management system, and how to write academic papers and citations. I felt this would be

I distinctly remember one student I reached out to. The restrictions in place at the time allowed gatherings of up to five people per group, so my friend and I invited her to study with us at a cafe. In this session, I managed to help her with the use of Zotero, the outline of the paper, and the crafting of her thesis statement. It felt really nice to see this new student go on to help even newer students because that’s the selfless culture that we want to cultivate at TCA. I hope that this culture will continue to grow in the years to come, even after I’ve graduated! 40 I P A C E S E T T E R S

During this period of restriction, it took intentional effort to set up meetings through online platforms with our fellow classmates. Thankfully, there were many games and platforms that helped facilitate a good time even though we were unable to meet in person. I also feel that it is important to continually meet up, uphold one another through available means of contact, and keep one another in prayer as we share vulnerably about our struggles in studies and ministry. I believe that the friendships forged over the years will not stop when we all graduate but follow us when we enter into the ministries and workplaces that God has called us to.

GRACE TEO Being enrolled as a TCA student during the pandemic was indeed challenging as I was struggling to find a community that could walk alongside me on this new journey. I’m glad that my classmates created a Telegram chat group for us to support one another in our studies, ministries and personal life.

KIKO ONG Being new to the school, I was glad to have the opportunity to make great friends in the college. Despite the pandemic, we got to meet for meals sometimes. We also have a chat group through which we inform each other about classes or share information. Virtually, we follow each other on Instagram.

Since we could gather in groups of up to five people, we would meet at the home of one of the classmates over lunch and play games. I also regularly met them one-on-one over meals during which we had deep conversations, and got to learn about each other in a way we wouldn’t have if we gathered in a group. In such personal contexts, we lent each other our listening ears as we completely opened our unfiltered hearts and exchanged godly advice that would empower us.

There was once I misread the assignment instructions. Riddled with anxiety, I called a classmate for help who readily guided me. Some others sent me encouraging messages to uplift my unsettling heart. Through these intentional one-on-one and group conversations, I saw a glimpse of God’s character emanating through each one of my precious TCA friends.

I’ve been supported by my friends in many ways, especially in my studies and making me feel welcomed. I’m an introvert at heart and find it difficult to build relationships with people. Despite this, I found myself having fun with them outside or within class settings. When I get anxious about the schoolwork or environment, seniors would share their experiences with past subjects and teach me how to write papers and citations, which greatly relieved my stress. Just watching them made me realize that it was alright to make mistakes and have fun along the way. I’ve learned a lot from them, and it was comforting to know that I have great support in school. My

friends have shown me that being a Christian does not necessarily mean that we think or do the same things, but rather we use our varied strengths and God-given personalities to love others the way God loves us.

41 I P A C E S E T T E R S

A word for my friends: I love you guys and couldn’t imagine life in TCA without you all! Thank you for investing in our friendship, and let’s press on together to advance God’s kingdom here as it is in heaven!

Learning from my friends, I began to take the initiative to support other new students like me by checking in on them and sharing with them my tips on time management and writing assignments. I really appreciate the patience and effort everyone takes to talk to and guide me along the way. I hope to be able to connect with others as well in the coming terms.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Theological Studies = Mission Possible!

Have you ever thought it was impossible to fit theological studies into your busy schedule? At TCA, we asked some of our part-time students – Benjamin Choo, Trisha Khoo, Toh Han Pin and Azaria Sih – all of whom hold full-time jobs and juggle ministry and family commitments, to share their thoughts on their journey and how they made it possible despite the odds.

BENJAMIN CHOO

TRISHA KHOO

What are the commitments you have besides your studies at TCA? BENJAMIN: I am a director of Genesis Law Corporation, specializing in corporate and commercial transactions. I’m also a pastor at Talent Beacon Fellowship where I oversee and provide direction for the various ministries. My wife and I are proud parents of four boys of schooling age. I’m pursuing the Master of Arts in Ministry program.

TOH HAN PIN

AZARIA SIH

AZARIA: I serve as a bi-vocational minister at Trinity Christian Centre and am employed with a financial institution. I am currently pursuing the Master of Arts in Ministry program.

What are the challenges you face with the multiple commitments you have?

TRISHA: I am in the Master of Arts in Ministry program, and a pastor in a local independent church, overseeing the areas of worship and discipleship. On the home front, I am a mother of two children aged 11 and 14.

BENJAMIN: I wish I could have more time! It is no joke writing research papers after having left school for close to 20 years. It does, however, provide entertainment for my kids, to see their dad studying with them. Another important challenge is to contextualize what we learn so that the people we minister too can also benefit from our education.

HAN PIN: I work in a US-based MNC and am proud to serve in the APAC Legal & Compliance team. I have a loving and supportive wife, and two schooling children. I am currently pursuing the Master of Divinity program.

TRISHA: Time is never enough when the demands of work, family, and studies collide. The pressures of ministry and study can sometimes overshadow the needs of the family. Furthermore, navigating all this

42 I P A C E S E T T E R S

through the pandemic, with ever-changing restrictions, has been extremely challenging. HAN PIN: I face limited time and energy for competing priorities, on top of the need to reserve mental capacity to reflect and internalize my learnings. Other challenges include performance anxiety and deadlines, not spending sufficient time with family, and to always stay focused on God and His purpose for me. AZARIA: The demands in the different areas of life are real, not just time, but energy to do well. During paper deadlines, time seems to evaporate, and unexpected things crop up. There is also my selfexpectation to do well in my studies.

How do you manage different roles while studying? BENJAMIN: God made it happen. I try to involve my family in what I do. We serve the community together at a weekly church outreach. My wife and I also have regular sessions with my boys to study the Bible together. It’s an opportunity for practical application of some lessons that I have learned in class. My classmates and lecturers are good resources that I turn to in order to respond to some of my boys’ difficult questions. My colleagues are also supportive of my studies and cover for me at work during the end of term and when there are block classes. TRISHA: Thankfully, I have a very supportive spouse. My church leadership team has also been extending me grace when I had to write papers and submit assignments. Having clear lines of communication and being open about my capacity during deadline weeks have also been helpful. I have also learned to courageously say no when I know I cannot handle more on my plate. These have kept me focused on my studies, work, and family without compromising my efforts. HAN PIN: Daily reliance on God in prayer and faith is essential, especially during assessment and assignment

periods. Effective time and energy management, self-discipline, and maximizing pockets of time for relationships and studies are as critical as being thankful for understanding family, colleagues, and friends. AZARIA: I think it’s important to plan. On the family/ friends front, I try to maintain a certain level of social engagement, but I would tone down this portion during assignment season to set a buffer for ministry demands and other unexpected things. There are times I feel stretched but, in these times, I find myself increasing in capacity by His grace to manage all that I need to do.

Do you have any advice for others who may be facing the same situation as you? BENJAMIN: I can only assure those who earnestly believe that God has called them to pursue formal theological education, on top of all the existing commitments, that God will make a way. TRISHA: I realize how easy it is to focus on my studies that God gets lost in the process. It takes intentionality to depend on and trust God through each semester. It is also extremely helpful to read through the course syllabus thoroughly, note down the deadlines, keep up with readings, and begin assignments early. Finally, the value of having a community of likeminded friends that can journey together with you cannot be understated. HAN PIN: Prayerfully seek God and be emboldened with His purpose for us. Constantly return to our personal motivation for this journey. Keep academic stress in check and be unabashed about making friends and seeking advice from course lecturers. AZARIA: Narrowing down on a term paper topic early helped me to keep my focus and research on-the-go. When I did two modules per semester, I would do one onsite class and the other online or a block class. This gave flexibility and breathing space. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and request tips from your lecturers and classmates. You will find that they are so willing to share!

TCA Online RESOURCES

46 I P A C E S E T T E R S

It is said that there has been a real paradigm shift in perceptions about e-books. Prior to the pandemic, e-books were perceived to be simply accessories that were nice to have, or digital resources with very specific utility. But today, e-books have become a necessity. Just like other libraries in the peak of the pandemic in 2020, TCA Library was closed in compliance with prevailing government regulations. But even after reopening, in line with safety measures such as social distancing, studying in the library for an extended period and checking out of physical books were not allowed until the following year. E-books have proven to be of great importance not only because we are in the age of digital learning but especially throughout the pandemic. Learning would have been very challenging, and it would have been almost impossible for students to write good academic papers if they did not have access to scholarly e-books. TCA Library started purchasing EBSCO e-books in 2016. The college leadership opted to purchase individual e-book titles rather than to subscribe to curated collections of e-books. This gives us the benefits of owning the e-books and having perpetual access. But more importantly, it gives us the advantage of picking and choosing individual titles that are suitable and relevant to our courses. We realize that most of our textbooks and main references are not included in pre-packed e-book collections. Given that many of our courses cover highly specialized and professional subjects, most of our resources are by credible, highly respected, and in-demand authors. It is not surprising then that these authors and their publishers opt to exclude their works in such collections and have them sold separately instead. The 190% increase in e-book full text access between 2019 and 2020 implies that our students have greatly benefited from our e-book collection. As students couldn’t go to the physical library, even those who preferred print books learned to pivot to e-books and became repeat users. It is believed that library users will not return to their pre-COVID study habits – that the shift to e-book reading will continue. It is also worth mentioning that along with scholarly e-books, TCA students have online access to current, academic journal

...by God’s grace and overflowing provision, TCA will strive to ensure that such valuable resources are always available to our students. articles through our subscribed EBSCOhost research databases, namely, ATLA Religion Database with ATLA Serials, Religion & Philosophy Collection, and Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection. As writing and publishing books may often take years, they are not always the best sources for current topics or information, but journals are. So, by God’s grace and overflowing provision, TCA will strive to ensure that such valuable resources are always available to our students. While there may be some who are still getting used to using e-resources, there is no denying that both the library and users have changed their priorities, specifically when it comes to collection access and content. The pros of using e-books and other e-resources simply outweigh the cons. So, as the students persevere to fulfill the calling God has placed upon their lives, TCA will also continue to provide them with a quality education supported by excellent library resources – digital or not.

NEW PROGRAM (Launching in January 2023, registration begins June 1, 2022)

Master of Arts in Christian Studies

We spoke to Dr Joseph Tan, Acting Dean of the School of Theology (English), about the new Master of Arts in Christian Studies (MACS) program. Here’s what he had to say about this exciting new online program.

1. Dr Joseph, can you share some of the program highlights of the Master of Arts in Christian Studies (MACS) program? What can students expect to learn? The MACS program is designed to provide students with a foundation in Biblical studies, church history, theology, and Christian ministry. This program is unique because the courses are conducted fully online without the need for the students to leave their home countries. Of course, there

are also some local students who prefer to take the MACS program because it allows them flexibility of time and convenience. Students are expected to reflect, synthesize, and integrate their Biblical and theological knowledge, spiritual formation, and practical ministry in their own local contexts.

2. Why did TCA decide to launch the MACS program? After the success of the online Graduate Diploma in Christian

48 I P A C E S E T T E R S

Studies (GDCS) program, we have been deliberating the need to offer a fully online master’s program. Some of the recent GDCS graduates have also been inquiring if they can continue to progress to a fully online master’s course. Secondly, the pandemic has made us realize the usefulness of online programs. More students are getting accustomed to the idea of attending lectures over video conference, doing online assignments, and accessing the online library for research.

As such, we began developing more online courses during the pandemic in anticipation of launching the MACS.

3. How is the MACS different from the other master’s programs offered by TCA? What is unique about MACS? The MACS is a fully online program where the studies are done asynchronously. In other words, there are no live lectures and examinations. Students are expected to complete assignments such as worksheets, forums, and research in an online format. The other master’s programs have courses that must be done onsite at the TCA campus. Although the delivery is different, the same rigor and quality of the MACS is ensured when compared to other master’s programs. The learning objectives remain the same regardless of whether the courses are taught onsite or online.

4. How will the MACS equip students for ministry? Students will need to study several ministry courses related to leadership, Christian discipleship, and spiritual formation. Students will also take several ministry electives depending on their future ministry needs. Some electives include Biblical Theology of

Missions, Biblical Worship, Marketplace Spirituality, Work and Calling, and World Religions.

7. Where can students get more information about the MACS?

These ministry electives will enable the students to apply their understanding of scripture and theology to practical life situations. We want our students to become ministry practitioners who are complete in their personal and spiritual formation so they are able to minister in the church or in para-church organizations.

The MACS catalog will be available on the TCA website. They can also write to TCA at admin@tca.edu.sg or call 63047602 to find out more for questions related to the program.

5. What kind of students would benefit from MACS?

a. Study a quality theological master’s program without leaving your ministry and contexts

From our experience in running the online GDCS program, some of the online students are busy professionals and pastors who may not be able to attend the weekly onsite classes. The others comprise students who do not reside in Singapore. Thus, students who see themselves as independent learners, disciplined and proactive, will benefit from the flexibility and convenience of the program.

6. How long does it take to finish the program? The period of candidature is up to three years for theological Bachelor degree holders, and up to six years for non-theological Bachelor degree holders.

49 I P A C E S E T T E R S

8. Finally, can you give students three reasons they should sign up for the MACS?

b. Join an online student community made up of students from all over the world, thereby appreciating the diverse knowledge and theological differences brought into the discussions c. Enjoy the flexibility of time and convenience so that you can better manage your work, ministry, and family commitments.

Studying in TCA I’m currently serving as the head of the worship, young adult and youth has given me ministries. Having been a Christian all my the confidence to life and serving full-time in my church for minister and lead three and a half years, I felt I had reached the ministries with a plateau in my serving given that I had more conviction. not received any theological education. Studying in TCA has given me the confidence to minister and lead the ministries with more conviction. I now enjoy imparting what I have learned from TCA in different opportunities in church, such as ministering to my members, leading baptism, and membership classes, teaching to various groups in our Christian Education classes, prayer meetings, leading worship, chairing Sunday services, leading communion, and crafting sermons for Sunday services. Every role gave me a deeper appreciation for the calling God has given to me. TCA has also helped me in discipling others through issues that members may have questions about, and guiding them to come up with their own convictions anchored in the Word. It has allowed me to craft curriculum essential for the youth and young adults so that they will be equipped for the call God has placed on their lives. TCA has also molded the way I view leadership – I now understand we are all called to be servant leaders modeled after Christ. Previously I had wanted to stay away from leadership roles, but now having answered the call to lead, I sense a new freedom that has helped me conquer the fears I held onto. I’m now able to wait patiently for God’s leading, discern with the team and lead together with them. I also have the boldness to confront issues with love when it’s not in line with who God is. This perspective of leadership has shaped the ministries and teams for the better and I’m grateful for that. Thank you, TCA.

Beyond leadership classes, talks and sessions, I was given opportunities to serve in various leadership capacities, such as the student council that leads small groups and plans college events. These hands-on experiences have been invaluable, giving me a safe space to grow my leadership abilities with the support of my peers and lecturers. The leadership experiences that I’ve gained have expanded my leadership capacity and made me a more confident leader. The courses taught by well-skilled lecturers have given me more confidence in handling the Word of God correctly and answering difficult questions that members may have. The opportunities to preach and teach in our lessons and subsequent feedback sessions have also given me more confidence to do so in live settings. Besides imparting ministry skills, I also got the opportunity to make many likeminded friends I can journey with as I carry on in my own ministry. As ministers, we also need personal help and support from others. That is why I treasure the friendships I’ve gained during my time in TCA. They have provided me with godly advice, support, and encouragement even after I’ve graduated.

My personal growth The counseling program was very useful for me as it placed great and these breakthroughs emphasis on rigorous training finally affirmed my calling in core clinical skills, which I into the counseling could readily apply in real-life profession. situations during my practicum as a counseling intern. It allowed me to quickly establish good rapport and trust with my clients. Having a strong foundation in counseling skills also gave me an edge and helped me receive an offer of a full-time counseling position even before I completed my practicum. I am now working as an assistant senior counselor specializing in trauma work with adults and play therapy with children. An early career as a counselor can be a daunting experience to many fresh graduates. Without much life experience, you are being confronted with a myriad of real-life, sometimes shocking issues. However, during my practicum classes, my lecturers and classmates gave me much developmental feedback in affirming ways, making me feel assured that I could make mistakes and try again. This was exceedingly important for me in building confidence to counter early professional anxiety. The curriculum also exposed me to a wide variety of theories and modalities, which gave me a good base for further professional development to build upon later in my career. My lecturers showed genuine care and struck me as mentors who cared not just about our knowledge and skills but also our character and who we are as a person. I received a lot of encouragement and guidance in working out personal issues and in discovering about myself, and through it, the self of the counselor can grow. My personal growth and these breakthroughs finally affirmed my calling into the counseling profession. Today, I still maintain good relationships with my TCA lecturers and turn to them for advice from time to time.

The program exceeded my expectations. Not only do I feel more prepared as a leader, but I grew in other areas as well. At the conclusion of my studies, I transitioned into leadership at a seminary in Argentina, so my studies came at a crucial stage for me. I was able to obtain tools that better prepared me for my current role. I had not had formal education since 2006. Getting back into an academic context allowed me to shift my mindset in preparation for where I am today. My cohort was key. Though we only had one in-person week, we bonded and were able to encourage each other to press on. The friendships forged in these two years will endure for years to come. The diversity of cultures represented exposed me to unique perspectives and worldviews that opened my eyes to different approaches to leadership and faith. Additionally, my capstone project provided findings that I can implement in the two new tracks we opened as a seminary in 2022. I gained insight and was able to hear from students first-hand on the areas that clearly need to be addressed. My overall experience was excellent. It was challenging, but most things worthwhile in life require effort. I was stretched and came out better on the other end. Words cannot express the impact this program had on my life, my leadership, and my faith. Thank you, TCA, for being the tool God used to shape me into a more effective instrument in His hands. 58 I P A C E S E T T E R S

Of course, Jesus’ command to go and innovative, culturally make disciples involves the process intelligent, and of learning and studying, but it is change-oriented. done in the context of going. Among many educational programs, the Master of Arts in Christian Leadership program perfectly encompasses both knowledge and application, and that is why I decided to apply to TCA College.

Master of Arts in Christian Leadership, 2022

The program offers education, while still allowing involvement in the everyday ministry of the local church. That was an important factor due to my full-time pastoral ministry in Moscow Central Assembly of God in Moscow, Russia. The program moves a student from self-nurturing education to education that longs to serve God, the church, and the community. The Master of Arts in Christian Leadership program is an integration of theology and leadership. The courses of the program are designed in a way that invites a leader not only to think Biblically but also strategically. Before starting the program, I had a vague understanding of Christian leadership, limiting it to a mere influence. Upon completion, however, I have gained a much more holistic view of what it means to be a leader: Biblically-educated leaders are not just influential; they are innovative, culturally intelligent, and change-oriented. During the course of the studies, I was fortunate to interact with professors and instructors who were highly qualified in the field of Christian leadership in organizational settings. Moreover, a cohort-based learning allowed me to learn from other ministers and leaders from around the world who studied alongside with me. In the end, I gained not only a solid educational foundation for my leadership but close friendships with other scholar practitioners which, I believe, will result in fruitful partnerships for the Kingdom of God’s sake. 59 I P A C E S E T T E R S

After my early retirement at age 60, I thought I should spend the better part of my retirement years beefing up my theological knowledge. Thank God that I enjoyed all the courses I took, and graduated more theologically equipped to better serve God.

YEO NAI HUAT CHRISTOPHER I Singapore I believe my calling is in teaching youths the love for the Word of God and to lay strong foundations of God-fearing youths. Learning more about the Word of God is an important aspect of my lifelong journey in Christ and my signing up for GDCS is a waypoint in this journey.

AMADEA SEOW EN HUI I Singapore TCA College is an institution that equips me for the ministry through education and the school’s culture. The education here challenges my mind to seek a greater understanding of the Scripture and explain it so that others can grapple with the wonders of God’s power. The school’s pastoral environment exemplifies how a church should be. I take the knowledge and the experience gained at TCA College to build up the people in my ministry.

GOH LEE CHOO I Singapore My education journey in TCA was enriching and enjoyable. It has equipped me with a good foundation in theological understanding and ministry skills to serve more effectively as a full-time minister. I am grateful for the wonderful interactions with caring lecturers and the friendships forged in the course of study.

JESSIE CHEW YI YING I United States of America From assignments to lectures to breaktime chats, the TCA experience has helped me gain a greater understanding of God’s mind and heart. May the latter days be greater than the former, for the best is yet to be.

KWEK SHU ZHEN, JEANETTE I Singapore I loved every bit of my studies in TCA! The lecturers were generous in sharing their knowledge and what I appreciated most was how my perspectives were broadened by their facilitation in classes. As much as assignment deadlines were haunting, they also resulted in new revelations in the process of grinding.

LEONG LAI MUN I Singapore My heart overflows with gratefulness for what God has done for me by answering my prayer to have wisdom to write papers (my area of weakness). I felt I had been given personal growth as I would not have imagined that I could forum, critique and dialogue on theological and Christian topics, challenged my mind to know God, and came out knowing that the Holy Spirit has nourished and grown me during this time. He has given me strength, grace, understanding, knowledge, and desire to ponder - to know Him more! May all that I have received be put to good use in His service.

LINCOLN REBECCA MAY I Singapore My education in TCA College has helped prepare me as a ministry intern in my home church. The courses helped to shape my perspective as a minister and our role as stewards of God’s house.
