The location is quite unusual, the hotel is situated away from the main town on the opposite side of the Khan River and is reached by a free shuttle boat, the Apsarian Queen, which is also available to take guests into town. Even though the hotel is only a stone’s throw from the town, its secluded location across the river is a beautiful spot with enviable views and a tranquil place to relax. If you stay during the dry season (November to May), a pedestrian bamboo bridge is constructed only 5-minute walk away from the hotel, allowing quick access into town. Bicycles are also available and you can pedal quickly into town using the nearby “Two wheels two legs only” bridge.
One of the must-dos in Luang Prabang is the traditional Giving of Alms, and The Apsara Rive Droite has arranged a unique experience with an authentic local flavour for its guests, this is a much smaller, more intimate experience than is enjoyed in the town where larger numbers of tourists tend to inhibit the experience. To keep you occupied, you can stroll the town, see some amazing temples, sample the local food, enjoy some shopping or take a day trip down the Mekong River.

Mount Bromo Mount Bromo is probably Indonesia’s best-known volcano and a protected nature reserve since 1919. Bromo rises to a height of 2,329 metres above sea level from a vast plain called the “Sea of Sand” or “Segara Wedi” surrounded by a cordillera, the remains of an ancient much larger volcano. Although thousands of tourists climb its peak every day, Bromo is very active and has erupted three times since 2000. During times of elevated levels of volcanic activity, the Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Disaster Hazard Mitigation may issue warnings against visiting the mountain. The usual way to get to Bromo is via a village called Cemoro Lawang. Walking to the mountain area takes about 45 minutes, but most visitors take an organised jeep tour for the trip which can be organised in the village. Tours usually leave the village before dawn to take in spectacular views as the sun rises over the sea of sand filled with early morning mists.

The temple is, in fact, much older than Bangkok itself, making it the oldest temple in the city. It is also one of the largest wats or temples in the country and can be found to the South of the Grand Palace. The temple contains more than 1,000 Buddha images, more than any other temple in Thailand, most of which were brought from abandoned temples in places such as Ayutthaya and Sukhothai by order of King Rama I.

AA Luxury luxury small Small ship Ship river River Cruise cruise Experience experience in Asia PANDAW RIVER CRUISE

The Exciting Expeditions This is a significant part of the Pandaw River experience. From a pleasant walk through the countryside and villages, to horse cart rides. The daily stops include tours of the historic capitals of Pagan with its 3,000 monuments, and Mandalay with its royal palace and many sites around the city and its rivers. Passing from lush teak forests around Prome to going through the near deserts of Middle Burma before reaching the former King’s capital in Mandalay, I got to experience some of the most basic local transportation available such as horse and cart rides and trishaws. We enjoyed the best of both worlds, the morning walks by the crowded markets and a taste of daily life in the vibrant city but then getting away from the hustle and bustle to enjoy the slow-paced country lifestyle. We saw old colonial buildings and colonial-style houses, we visited the oldest golf course in Myanmar and passed through the former British botanical garden. Other sights come to mind, the Yout-saun-kyaung monastery with its spectacular wood carvings and the awe of the magnificent view from Tan-Chi-Taung mountain. Overlooking the temples, trees and across the vast horizons, it was simply breath-taking. Memorable Experiences

I was seeking out something very special so I took a river cruise in the “Golden Land” (better known as Myanmar), a luxury expedition and a wonderful way of seeing the real heart of this timeless country.

I

There were many very memorable experiences. I learned to make a gold leaf at a “hammering cottage”. It took a substantial amount of time and effort to beat gold leaf into its final, very thin state similar to gold flake. The gold leaf is used as offerings and decorations in the temples and on statues of the Buddha.

t was to be a great mix of relaxation and adventurous expedition, a chance to be in touch with your inner being as you gaze upon the natural wonders that this land has to offer interspersed with the learning of new skills and hands-on activities such as learning how to make a gold leaf and sand paintings.

I found myself immersed in the rich culture and traditions of Myanmar, an experience that brought about a sense of serenity with a plethora of opportunities for peace and quiet, times to sit back, relax and enjoy the magnificent beauty that Myanmar has to offer. RV Pandaw ll In Yangon, we embarked on the RV Pandaw ll for a 14-day expedition. The Pandaw is an old school, 1930s design of small ship with marine detailing and architecture inspired by the old colonial ships of Myanmar’s history. It felt like I was returning to a past era, but thankfully it is well equipped with modern technology and facilities. There is ample space too. With the lowest of ‘passenger to deck space’ ratios, you will always be able to find a place to wind down and read a book, meditate, bond with friends and family or meet new people on board. The staterooms are inspired by colonial-era design but with a distinctive character that manifests exquisite contemporary comfort. I was pleasantly surprised to find that both my room and bathroom were indeed not your typical hotel room, they were spacious and had an earthy, homey feeling and with a cosiness that exuded elegant old-world charm. The meals were excellent, and I was spoilt for choice with a wide range of delicacies, from local cuisine to exotic food. Breakfast is served buffet style while the main course meals of lunch and dinner are served at your table with a few choices to choose from based on your preferences. We were well nourished by the freshest and most mouth-watering delicacies prepared by brilliant chefs.

journey A Grand Farewell Before I knew it, my two weeks had passed and, sadly, all good things must come to an end. We were hosted with a farewell cocktail party on the sundeck before dinner. We spent that final evening together, catching up, enjoying the ambience and celebrating the end of what had been a wonderful journey. My Final Thoughts It was an experience of a lifetime, one that I have never experienced before and will never forget. As an avid solo traveller, the river cruise slowed down my usual pace of travel to one that was relaxing and gave me a much-needed breather. If you plan to visit Asia I would recommend anyone to experience the Pandaw River Cruise. It gave me the relaxation and rejuvenation that I needed. It also gave me times of fun and the sort of adventurous expeditions I was seeking. It is family-friendly and indeed an experience to enjoy with your friends and family to have a break and bring you closer together. Being a travel and documentary photographer, it was marvellous to be ferried to different locations every single day. This gave me the opportunity to capture a myriad of sights, landscapes and people unique to each of the many locations we visited. Our guide, San Lin Tun, was blessed with extensive knowledge and experience and as she shared what she knew with us this added considerable value to the entire experience.

Throughout the expedition, I was constantly interacting with Myanmar’s rich culture and traditions. I learned so much, experiences that I have found deeply enriching to the sum of my life experience. In addition to the travel experience, close friendships were forged with some of my fellow travellers and we have been in contact ever since then. The Pandaw River Cruise crew, from the service staff to the managers on board, gave us great quality of service. We were well provided for and everything was taken care of down to the minute details. Amazing food, great cocktails, beautiful scenery, a comfortable stay and fun side expeditions, what more could I ask for? A special thanks to the general manager who took such great care of us and made sure that our everyday needs were met. He was always there for us, happy to help and with a smile on his face whenever we reached out to him. This made us feel that we were in good hands and that we would be comfortable and well taken care of during the entire trip.

After such a rewarding experience, I decided that I would love to visit Myanmar again. This had been my first experience of a boat cruise and it left me craving to try more cruises with Pandaw. They have an upcoming river cruise to India and that may well be the next cruise I take

next island First is visiting Cunca Wulang, a limestone waterfall and canyon situated in foothills of Mount Mbeliling rainforest, about 30 km eastward from Labuan Bajo that can be reached an hour by car. The road leading to the waterfall is quite challenging and as soon as I arrived to the place, I walked down the stairs to get to the waterfall. Leaving early in the morning is recommended, as the weather is not that hot and indeed less people, making this trip very enjoyable. Cunca Wulang is a captivating series of fresh water pools sandwiched between high limestone cliffs. Over period of times, water has corroded some attracting formations into the cliffs, including several small, watery caves. Lower down the river, the high canyons widen out into a series of cascades that extend for many kilometers towards the bottom of the valley.

Next is Gua Rangko (Rangko Cave) can be found in a remote place of Rangko Village. To get to this cave, you can use boat from Labuan Bajo or by car or motorcycle to Rangko Village and continue the trip by local boat. I got there early in the morning when the water is low so the boat stops a bit far from the dock. Fortunately I wore my Aqua Shoes so I could walk comfortably in the ocean about 5 minutes. From the dock, you’ll be able to see the beautiful mouth of cave from afar and this cave reminds me of Gua Baru Cermin which is also located in Labuan Bajo. The cave is small with high saltwater pool in the middle where you can swim. Due to high content of salt in the water make floating is very easy.

After an hour flight from Denpasar, I finally arrived at Labuan Bajo and was more than ready to explore the place.

My awaited journey is the island hopping that started from Pulau Padar, a small island positioned between Komodo and RInca Islands. Arriving at 7 in the morning, I went straight to the hill to watch 3 beaches with various sand colors. On my right, the sand is white whereas black sand on my left and in front is pink sand. The view is amazing, very unforgettable. I spend some meaningful moment just sitting and admiring the surroundings.

L

abuan Bajo has changed greatly since the last time I was here 5 years ago. The new airport is bigger, more spacious and well maintained. A former fishing village on the Western tip of the island of Flores, this tiny coastal town has been transformed into a busy epicentre of tourism and the Gateway to the island of Flores and the province of East Nusa Tenggara. I was glad that in this second trip I stayed longer and aimed to go to some of the Labuan Bajo main attractions that had not been visited before.

After that was going to the amazing Komodo National Park, home of the world famous Komodo Dragon. Komodo National Park, which has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site and has been selected as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. I chose the medium track to watch this incredible creature that took about an hour across the forest and stumble upon other animals such as birds, and deer.

I spent my lunchtime at Pink Beach, one of the most visited beaches in the area due to its unusual pink colour sand and magnificent underwater life. Situated in an uninhabited area of the island, this is one of only seven beaches in the world that, due to a mixture of red and white sand, have a lovely pink hue. There were not too many people but us, so we had the island for ourselves. Snorkeling is certainly an exciting activity that you must do while in this island. The first spot is Manta Point. As the name suggests, it is the location where you can witness many manta ray with size about 3 meter. Next spot is Makassar Reef, an island close to Manta Point where you can also encounter manta ray. Name after the city of Makassar is due to its shape that resembles Makassar. The island is bounded with white and pink sand and surrounded beautiful crystal clear blue water.

That resembles Makassar. The island is bounded with white and pink sand and surrounded beautiful crystal clear blue water. Last stop is Kanawa Island, between Labuan Bajo and Sebayur Besar Island, which is also worth a visit. This untouched and secluded island has a grassy and hilly topography, a white sandy shoreline and is surrounded by crystal clear water; the reef that surrounds the island is home to numerous species of coral, fish, turtles and reef sharks. Here, you see one of the most awesome sunsets.

A trip to Labuan Bajo and the islands of the Komodo National Park is very memorable and unforgettable. I would definitely be planning another holiday to this island soon. I realize there are many other interesting places that must be out in my bucket of list. Article by Nina Putu

KUALA LUMPUR Explore The Best of KL

This charming city with its famous landmarks, the historic charm of colonial buildings and its modern shopping malls has a lure that brings people back time after time.

I

t was almost noon when I arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport pleased to return to spend a few days in the city. For many reasons Kuala Lumpur has become one of my favourite travel destinations, it is a quick 3-hour direct flight from Bali, and the city has so many interesting things to offer. There are two particular shopping centres I am always drawn to when I visit. The first is The Suria KLCC situated at the base of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. This is one of Malaysia’s premier centres where stores offer a mix of both major brands and more affordable merchandise. The second is the Pavilion, a modern shopping centre in the Bukit Bintang area with hundreds of retail shops representing some of the world’s finest brand names along with many famous local brands, entertainment and a selection of quality eating places. In spite of the stunning high rise buildings, futuristic architecture and the fast pace of the city’s development, Kuala Lumpur is a melting pot of cultures and has successfully managed to keep and preserve the best of it’s of heritage buildings. On my second day, I visited several historical sites starting with the Sultan Abdul Samad building in front of Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square). Then on to the Blue Mosque, another remarkable building with its unique architecture blending traditional and modernist styles within a structure of integrated Malay and Islamic architecture. Finally on to the Thean Hou Temple, also recognised for its dramatic architecture.

For visitors to KL who have the time, a trip to the city of Malacca is well worth the effort. Only a 2-hour drive from KL itself takes you to the city which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 owing to the rich cultural and historical sites it contains. Most of the places of interest here are close together, so a day-trip is enough to discover what the city has to offer. The highlight is a visit to Stadthuys, built in 1650 the building has been carefully preserved and maintained to retain its original form with a distinctive bright red exterior. While there, you should make a stop at St Paul’s Church and Christ Church, both within easy reach of the Malacca River. Before leaving the city, spoil yourself by savouring some of the vast variety of food available in the hawker centres, food courts and restaurants. Whatever your preference, you won’t be disappointed. The thriving, cosmopolitan city of Kuala Lumpur is a great place for a short escape.

ith a devotion to serving the finest of flavours to his guests, the new chef has created an innovative menu crafted to produce taste sensations that do not disappoint. Ju-Ma-Na offers 2 or 3-course lunches using the best produce available.

Choosing a table by the window overlooking a splendid view out over the Indian Ocean, my lunch started with Soy Marinated Smoked Salmon Cannelloni. Homemade smoked salmon is wrapped in thin slices of cucumber, topped off with avruga caviar and with togarashi soy garlic aioli on the side to enhance the flavours. Paying close attention to detail in its presentation, the dish looked as lovely as its taste. You may also savour the Oven Baked Beetroot Salad with Granny Mustard Orange Sorbet and served with avocado guacamole and tamarillo coulis. For a main course, the Lightly Poached Yellow Chicken is undoubtedly a great lunch option. A sliver of chicken breast is lightly poached and coated with truffle cream and served with zucchini couscous, king oyster mushroom teppanyaki, and wasabi pepper chicken jus. The delicious truffle cream and wasabi pepper chicken jus beautifully complement the tender, moist chicken. To end this lovely lunch, Hazelnut Mascarpone was my perfect choice. With its breathtaking views and gourmet cuisine, Ju-Ma-Na comes highly recommended for gastronomic enthusiasts to dine with a view.

Socio Travelling I m p r o v i n g S o c i a l W e l l b e i n g t h r o u gh T r av e l

On 5 August 2018 Lombok was shaken by a 6,5 M earthquake which destroyed 10,062 houses leaving many residents homeless. Even though aid has been coming from all across Indonesia, fair distribution of this assistance has been difficult as most of the aid has only been available from a few Help Centres.

A

sa result, a newly created socially based community named Moklet Bali was inspired to send aid directly to a few selected locations in most urgent need. Moklet Bali held a number of fundraising events such as; selling second-hand items, t-shirts, refilled water bottles and so on. “SocioTravelling” is the organisation’s newest program in which people can carry out social activities to assist the most needy locations while travelling, this promotes new tourism places and increases local income.

A team of 7 volunteers set off to Lombok by car and headed to our first location in Lokok Reban village, Bayan, in the island’s North. Here we delivered aid along and arranged a few fun activities for the children. It was then on to Sembalun, our second location, located right below Mount Rinjani. Here we held trauma healing activities for the children, drawing, playing and singing together. Then we built a “pop-up” cinema in the centre of the refugee camp. A huge white screen was created by sewing together unused bed-sheets that had been donated. To complete the experience we popped some corn and grilled sweet potatoes as snacks for the children as they watched children’s movies on the big screen.

Article by Sofian Hadi Sofian works in the Hospitality Industry as a Graphic Designer and Photographer in one of Bali’s 5-star resorts. Travelling, photography and blog writing are his main hobbies. He was born in Malang, East Java and has lived for more than ten years in Bali. He used to be a radio announcer and Art Director at a local magazine company. Together with his alumni, he built the Moklet Bali community and is actively involved in #SayaPeduliIndonesia and #SOCIOtravelling initiatives.

We finishing surrounded by smiling faces and laughter and retired to our camping site where we built our own tents and spent the night. We woke up early at 4 am for a short trek up Pergasingan hill to see the sunrise and then on to Senggigi Beach and Seger Beach for the sunset. It was an unforgettable experience visiting some interesting places that not many people know, making new friends and seeing the way people live. Finally, we left Mataram and headed back to Lembar Port to end our first SocioTravelling expedition to Lombok. As our tagline says: People, Place, Pictures; the primary purpose of SocioTravelling is to prioritise interaction with local people while helping them at the same time. Through travelling, we can introduce new tourism places, cuisines and cultures to people by taking and sharing pictures in our social media.
