Alila Fort Bishangarh, Jaipur Rajasthan, India “On a photography trip to Rajasthan, I had the opportunity to stay at the spectacular Alila Fort Bishangarh, an amazing five-star hotel near Jaipur. It was extravagant and lavish and an experience that will stay with me forever.

T

he spectacular fort is built on the top of a granite hill in the Aravalli Mountain area. The beautiful form of the fort is reminiscent of the fairytales of our childhood; it stimulates the imagination and conjures up stories of romance and adventure.

Alila Fort Bishangarh defines what heritage hotels are all about, a 230-yearold castle in a dramatic setting and converted into an outstanding luxury hotel. The extensive renovation process took seven long years to complete and resulted in a magical place of magnificence and beauty. The renovation of the Fort retained all the original exterior structure preserving the beautiful form of its architectural design and features. All the windows, entrance portals, arches, columns, railings, jaali screens (latticed windows), turrets and walls have been kept true to their original design.

Internally fifty nine luxury suites have been created; each is spacious and fitted out with all the comforts of modern living. Most of the rooms feature a large bathtub designed to suit the fort’s ambience and romantic feel. Fort Bishangarh is a historic landmark and a unique example of Jaipur Gharana architecture, a fusion of Mughal and British architectural influences. It is also probably the only warrior fort to be converted into a heritage resort. The hill of the fort houses a restaurant, a courtyard, terraces, banqueting lawns, a play club and a gymnasium. On the lower slopes, guests can enjoy a swim in the beautiful infinity pool, and enjoy Mediterranean cuisine and a

drink at the Haveli restaurant while enjoying the peace and quiet of the area. From the pool, you get the stunning views of the fort and the Aravalli hills. The fort is not the only stunning attraction - the food was spectacular. At Alila Fort Bishangarh, sustainability is very important. There is an organic garden, a fruit orchard and a greenhouse established amongst the ravines. The foundation of the cuisine is based in its simplicity and its freshness, a “straight from the garden” concept that is directly reflected in the taste of every meal. I was amazed by the phenomenal tastes of Rajasthan cuisine prepared using techniques

Outdoor on the terrace, there is Nazara offering dining from the grill with spectacular landscape views. Indoor, there’s Amarsar, a spectacular restaurant and by far my favourite room for its aesthetic and ambience. The restaurant serves international cuisine. Amarsar was where I had my breakfast each morning and a great place to start your day. Other dining options include the Madhuveni Bar, which has a cigar lounge, a unique selection of whisky and cognac and you can sample India’s red and white wines. Several times each day, musicians play showcasing Rajasthan’s traditional musical instruments. Guests can also enjoy performances by dancers while dining on the terrace in the evenings. The resort offers various activities including camel rides, hiking in the Aravalli Hills and visits to the village of Bishangarh to experience local life, culture and craft traditions. After a busy day, guests can relax and refresh in the resort’s unique spa. Throughout my stay, I was impressed by the wonderful service and hospitality of the staff, attentive and professional they ensure that you have the best stay possible.

You can’t visit Labuan Bajo without going to Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Island hopping is highly recommended, starting from Pulau Padar, a small island between Komodo and Rinca Islands. Here you can climb a hill to see three multicoloured (white, black and pink) beaches. The scenery is breathtaking, a real feast for the eyes. One of the highlights is Pink Beach, located in an uninhabited area of the island. This beach is one of only seven in the world with pink sand its pink hue due to a mixture of red and white sand. The water here is shallow, making the beach ideal for swimming or snorkelling. Other islands worth visiting while island hopping are Kanawa, Sebayur, Bidadari, Seraya and Sabolo. For diving enthusiasts, there are world-class dive sites just off Komodo and of particular note is the site close by of Gili Banta, an unpopulated island just to the northwest of Komodo. THE AMAZING ARCHITECTURE OF RAJASTHAN Pushkar - A Spiritual Town

I

had planned a trip to Rajasthan, a state in the North East of India and, on landing in the capital Jaipur, I headed for Pushkar, 150km away. Pushkar is a town bordering the Thar Desert and is a famous sacred site for both Hindu and Sikh pilgrims. It is a small town with many temples and lakeside ghats (stone staircases) where people bathe during celebrations. For religious reasons in Puskar, you are not allowed to eat eggs, and meat and alcohol are prohibited. Pushkar is famous for the “Pushkar Camel Fair” which happens every year in October or November. Over a period of seven days, people come from far and wide to trade horses and camels. The first impression is that it sounds like it is just a cattle market, but it is, in fact, much more than that. Over the years, the Camel Fair developed into a local celebration and big tourist attraction.

48

TropicaLife.net

There are all sorts of activities to keep people occupied. A funfair is set up with a lot of rides and attractions; there’s camel riding, lots of dancing and music and contests such as horse dancing and who has the longest moustache. All in all, the event attracts in the order of 200,000 visitors during the entire fair. During my stay in Pushkar, I met some Rajasthan’s Kalbeliya Gypsies, one of the nomad communities of India. They are minstrels and make their living by performing music and dance displays for tourists and also by making henna. Traditional gypsy music is an important part of the aural tradition of the region, an art form that has been passed down through the generations. In 2010, UNESCO officially incorporated the traditional folk songs and dances of Rajasthan’s Kalbeliya people into its Intangible Heritage List.

“I During my photography travel to Rajesthan, I had the opportunity to stay at Alila Fort Bishangarh, a fivestar hotel near Jaipur.”

Jodhpur - The Blue City and Sun City I have wanted to visit Jodhpur for a long time now. It is the second largest city and situated pretty much in the centre of the state of Rajasthan. It is a popular tourist destination owing to the beauty of the palaces, temples and forts and for the incredible desert around the city. Jodhpur is widely known as the Blue City or Sun City. It is nicknamed ‘Blue City’ because the houses are painted in blue in the older areas of the city. There are two reasons for this, firstly the colour blue reflects most of the heat and keeps the homes cool. The colour blue is also associated with the Brahmins, and the houses are said to belong to that particular caste. The city is also known as the ‘Sun City’ because it enjoys bright and sunny weather all year round. I was staying at the Toorji Ka Jhalra (Toorji’s Step Well) and got up very early in the morning for a walk. Dogs were still sleeping and enjoying the last moments of quiet before the hustle and bustle of the city took over. I came across a woman sitting alone, reading her book and I stayed for a while to enjoy the moment.

journey

A short walk took me into the city and the marble mausoleum of the Jaswant Thada memorial. Situated on the top of a hill, here you can enjoy views out over Jodhpur and the Mehrangarh Fort. Mehrangarh Fort is one of the most beautiful forts I have ever seen. Built around 1459 by Rao Jodha, it is one of the largest forts in India, and architecturally it is magnificent. Awed by the fort’s insolent beauty, I toured the many rooms of the fort and its museum. I learned all sorts of fascinating facts about things like elephant howdahs (seating placed on the back of an elephant), palanquins, the Armoury and the Turban Gallery. The fort also contains a collection of absolutely beautiful paintings. Around the fort, there are all manner of man-made water features and reserves built over the centuries to sustain the lives of the people. Walking in the streets of the blue city was the highlight of my visit to Jodhpur. As a photographer, this is a very special place as evidenced by the long history of famous photographers who have come here to create iconic images. The blue buildings stand out giving photographs a powerful and unique identity. It was a joy to get lost in the small streets and witness the everyday activities of the people as they go about their daily lives. Jaipur - The Pink City Jaipur, the capital of India’s Rajasthan state, is one of India’s most magical and beautiful cities. It is a large, vibrant city. Jaipur Airport was the point of arrival and departure for my return flight from Singapore and, with such easy connections, it is very accessible. As a result, It is very “touristy.” The name ‘Pink City’ came about owing to the colour of the

buildings. Every building within the walled historic centre is painted a terracotta “pink” a colour which is attributed to its royal family history. Building colour has become a legal requirement and, as a result, most of the buildings in and around the centre of Jaipur are pink these days. Interestingly it was noticeable that people’s attitude and hospitality is as vibrant as the city’s pink hue. Jaipur is an interesting city with lot’s of things to see and traditions to learn, another reason why it is so popular among tourists. On my first day, I set off on a tuk tuk. My first stop was the world famous Jal Mahal (Water Palace), a majestic palace set in the middle of the Man Sagar lake and a showcase of the Rajput style of architecture. The views are stunning and offer a myriad of photographic opportunities. The place is very popular among Indian tourists who stop to feed the pigeons giving it a very family-friendly energy. Before sunset, I went to see more stunning architecture at the Amber Fort, located a few kilometres out of Jaipur in the village of Amer. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is the main tourist attraction of Jaipur and tourists were swarming in and around the structure. The fort is

massive and has many interesting facets. As I stood watching the people coming in and out and flying pigeons, strangely, I found it a very poetic moment. The following day, I went to the stunning Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), a palace built from red and pink sandstone. Sitting on the edge of the City Palace this is an iconic place; it is very photogenic and (as I fully understand) very popular among Instagrammers and bloggers. It really is so beautiful. If I had to choose a single image that perfectly embodies the mood of the pink city it would be a picture of the Hawa Mahal with its beautiful facade and row after row of windows. This awesome building is open to the public. This is a city where streets are alive with living heritage, with artisans using their traditional skills making and painting fabric, making carpets, sculpting stone and crafting jewellery. India is famous for its ‘stepwells’, and the never-ending plethora of fascinating designs are excellent for photographic creativity. So I went to see the Panna Meena Ka Kund stepwell, one kilometre away from the Amber Fort in the northwest part of Amer village.

journey

The entire structure is built with steps in a yellow colour. Sadly I was frustrated when someone told me I was not allowed to walk down the steps to the water. I joined the locals and walked back to the fort along a small road, a lovely end to the day. After a long and very rewarding trip, I wanted to finish off with something very special, so I stayed for three days and two nights in the incredible Alila Fort Bishangarh. As you can read elsewhere in this issue, the experience at this hotel is an unforgettable one and a worthy end to an excellent trip. ESCAPE TO THE GILI ISLAND

“The feeling of stepping onto a white sandy beach surrounding by uninterrupted views of sun-drenched white sands and azure seas is indescribable. Something not to be missed is island hopping and snorkelling in the Gilis. 54

T

he Gili islands have established themselves as trendy destinations for international visitors looking for remote islands to ‘get away from it all’. The natural feel of the islands has been greatly enhanced by the local authority’s decision to prohibit the use of motorised vehicles on the islands. This simple change greatly enriches the holiday experience as, most of the time, everyone must get around the island by bike, feet or local transport called ‘cidomo,’ which is basically a horse and cart with a roof. Gili Trawangan is the main island of the three and has become well known as the ‘party island’ packed with accommodation from luxury to homestay, restaurants, cafes, and bars. These days the accommodation is not only limited to local standard; the increasing numbers of foreign visitors in recent years has had a considerable influence in introducing international standards. This is particularly the case with food and drink, and there is no longer the need to worry you will go hungry because your palette cannot handle traditional spicy food. Numerous restaurants along the Gili Trawangan beachfront offer comprehensive Asian and Western menus. Gili Air, even though it is the most populated of the three, is only well known for its diving spots. The inland area is mostly populated by people from Lombok (this is the closest of the Gili Islands to Lombok). Off the shore of Gili Air is a wonderful dive site known as the ‘Gili Air Wall’ with an abundant array of colourful tropical fish and an immense reef of living coral, a joyful sight as you slowly swim or snorkel by. If you’re lucky, you may see seahorses and turtles lurking in the depths. The underwater scenery is breathtaking; these islands really are a paradise for keen divers. Between the two other Gili Islands, Gili Meno is the smallest of the three and is visited by fewer tourists which makes it perfect for honeymooners or for those who really want to get away from the madding crowd. Whatever you’d like to do, the Gili Islands have much to offer, it certainly is a wonderful experience, and after spending a few days, you’ll be feeling relaxed and recharged. From the beachside to the underwater marine life, from the tranquillity of island retreats to the exiting international party scene, the Gili Islands have it all.

EXPLORING NATURE AT ITS BEST KRABI “In search of a relaxing destination surrounded by outstanding scenery? Krabi may well be the answer to your needs. Lying on the mouth of the Krabi River where it flows into the Andaman Sea, Krabi is one of the largest provinces of Thailand. It is located on the mainland of Thailand but has about 200 islands and islets around it. These gorgeous islands are blessed with white sandy beaches and amazing sea cliffs, so it is no surprise that people flock there to unwind, swim in the crystal clear waters or take part in adventurous activities. The first thing to do is to go island hopping to explore and see for yourself the range and breathtaking beauty of the nearby islands. A place of interest here is Maya Bay at Phi Phi Leh where Leo DiCaprio filmed “The Beach. Here beaches are backed by limestone cliffs and lots of quiet little coves can be found in this majestic area.

North of Phi Phi Don lie two small islands, Bamboo Island or Koh Mai Phai and Mosquito Island or Koh Yung. Koh Mai Phai is a tiny island surrounded by a lovely beach though, interestingly, the island is covered with casuarina trees, not a stick of bamboo is to be seen. In Koh Yung, limestone cliffs dominate the landscape, and this attractive island with its clear water, coral reef and rich marine life has become an exciting snorkelling site. If you still have time, it is worth spending two nights at one of the lavish resorts on Koh Lanta which is actually made up of several islands with Koh Lanta Yai being the most famous. There are many world-class diving and snorkelling spots nearby or if you decide to do nothing, just soak in the sun while sipping on your favourite drinks. Another place you should visit is Railay Beach, a peninsula located between Krabi town and Ao Nang that has four beaches to explore. The peninsula is cut-off from the mainland by elevated cliffs and the only way to get in and out is by boat. The peninsula features unspoiled beaches, a jungle-covered mountain coastline, a totally laidback ambience and many things to do. To enjoy the peace and tranquillity that Railay has to offer, there are walkways and paths leading to the bay and its beaches and through the jungle. A few hotels and resorts are available if you decide to stay. Whatever your preference might be, Krabi has it all, from relaxing on beaches, swimming in the clear waters of a warm sea or for those who want to make this a more adventurous visit.

AN UNFORGETTABLE TRIP TO CHINA

“I had never considered visiting China until only a few months before I started this trip. But then I read an article about the magnificence of The Forbidden City, Beijing’s greatest palace complex which is filled with the history of the Emperors from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. It stimulated my curiosity and led me to do some further research about the country; as a result, I decided to visit four cities in 12 days last November.”

T

he first city on my list was Shanghai, and so I started my journey in what is China’s largest city of 24 million people. Located on the Huangpu River where it enters the southern bank of the Yangtze River estuary, Shanghai is a bustling metropolis of skyscrapers. It has well developed modern transport systems which make it very easy to get around. People said you can’t go to Shanghai without visiting The Bund. The Bund (or Waitan) is an iconic place and, from the 1860s to the 1930s, was the heart of the former international settlement. It runs along the west bank of the Huangpu River across from the skyscrapers of the new city centre. Formerly a fishing village it has become the tourist centre of Shanghai with its dozens of historic buildings, wharves that line the waterfront and the charm of a bustling promenade packed with tourists, locals and street sellers. Shanghai also has some beautiful Buddhism Temples, and I took the chance to visit the Ji’an Temple and the Jade Buddha Temple. On my last day in the city, I was feeling relaxed and started my day enjoying some coffee in the largest Starbucks in the world. I walked on into a pedestrian area surrounded by buildings in French colonial style, an area known as the Former French Concession. I finished by day doing some window shopping and trying some street food around the Tianzifang shopping area.

On the fourth day, I took a flight to Xi’an, one of the oldest cities in China. It is located on the eastern side of the silk road and was one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals, a status it held through the Zhou, Chin, Han, Sui and Tang Dynasties. Xi’an was known as Chang’an or the” Eternal City” in ancient times and many of its ancient structures survive to this day including the world’s largest city wall. The city is also home to the world-famous Terracotta Army Museum with its collection of 8,000 life-sized Terracotta Army Statues standing in battle-ready formation that were buried with the Emperor to guard him in the afterlife. The 2,000 year old Army was created in 209 BC by Emperor Qin Chi Huang, the first Emperor of the unified dynasty of Imperial China. Finally, the day I had looked forward to the most, I took the bullet train to continue my trip to Chengde City, in the Province of Hebei. The reason for my visit was to see the Chengde Imperial Mountain Resort, which includes the Chengde Imperial Summer Palace set in large beautiful gardens. The resort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and occupies 5,640,000 square meters. It was built during the Qing Dynasty as a summer residence and was used by the Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors. It took 87 years from 1703 to 1790 to finish all the buildings. The gardens are vast and divided into three areas, the lakes area, the plains area and the hills area. Its many trees, plants, rivers and lakes and its hundreds of pagodas, palaces and temples are all enclosed by a 10,000 metre long wall.

next destination Three days later, I finally arrived in my last city, Beijing, for the last three days of my trip. I started by visiting the Great Wall of China. The Great Wall is the only human-made structure that can be seen from the space. I took a one hour trip from Beijing, choosing Muntianyu as my starting point because it is quieter than the more popular Balading. I spent the following day visiting The Forbidden City, the reason I had decided to visit the country in the first place. Located in the city centre this palace was the Chinese Imperial Palace for 24 Emperors from 1420 (the Ming Dynasty) to 1912 (the Qing Dynasty). Covering an area of 72 hectares and having an unbelievable 8,700 rooms, this is the largest palace in the world and was declared a World Heritage site in 1987.

This day was to be my last day in Beijing and the end of my journey. The morning felt colder than on previous days, but that didn’t stop me from visiting the Beijing Summer Palace set in the largest and most beautiful garden in China. Autumn was setting in, and I particularly enjoyed the golden colours of the falling leaves along the entrance walkways to the Yonghe Temple and the Temple of Heaven. My trip to China was a wonderful experience, it gave me so many lifelong memories, and its depth of history taught me so many lessons too. Sitting overlooking a beautiful garden one day, I tried to imagine its beauty in the springtime with all of the trees and flowers in bloom. I smiled and whispered to myself and made a promise that one day I’ll come back to this place but in a different season.

INNOVATIVE CREATIONS

L

Uni Restaurant & Bar

aunched in early October 2019, Uni Restaurant & Bar is the first restaurant bringing together the efforts of Urchin’s former star chef Steven Skelly and drinks guru Nicholas Lento. The food is a blend of Asian inspiration and contemporary techniques using locally sourced seafood and vegetables, which are served with Japanese and French influences in a modern style. The menu is a foray through Japanese flavours and sophisticated dishes to match its equally sophisticated, and rather unusual, tipple.

“A newcomer in Berawa area, Uni Restaurant & Bar refers to itself as a casual, fine diner serving Asian inspired dishes. This understated description belies the skills of the highly respected chef and the drinks expert on whose collaboration Uni has been founded.”

Open for dinner from 6.00 pm to 10.30 pm; Uni then remains open until late for drinks. There are two menu options to choose from; the A la Carte menu which features snacks such as Tartare Cone and Urchin Maki; Entres such as Scallop Crudo and Seared Hamachi; Mains such as Roasted Grouper and Seared Tuna and Desserts such as Vanilla Panna Cotta and Passion Fruit Souffle. Alternatively, you may select the 5-course tasting menu or the 5-course vegetarian tasting menu featuring selections that are infused with Asianinspired flavours. To complement or pair with each dish, the restaurant offers an impressive array of sake and low proof cocktails, as well as the chance to choose to match your dinner to different teas rather than the traditional wine. Creative cocktails are in abundance, including concoctions of gin mixed with lemon, peach, rosewater and aromatic coconut, and a blend of Sherry Campari, Sherry, clarified strawberry and pickle juice. nveloped in its peaceful surroundings complemented by soothing reflecting small pond, Spa at Maya offers exquisite service and unparalleled relaxation with an extensive menu of holistic treatments supported by the healing benefits of Bali’s natural environment. Choose from an exotic selection including rejuvenating facials, traditional body wraps and massages, and customised spa packages. Spa at Maya has introduced a new wellness experience, called Citrus Bath that is included in both of the Signature Treatments: Tropical Sensation and Tropical Bliss. During this ritual, you will be spoilt soaking in citrus fruits that have natural sources of vitamin C, while the scent and taste uplift your mood and are good for the skin. For the treatment, I was suggested to try the Tropical Bliss. It started with an ultimate relaxing “Soothing Maya Massage” followed by an exotic lime and ginger scrub to exfoliate, revitalise and refresh the body. Nothing is more soothing than a warm bath, especially after a long journey, and a natural fruit bath is a great way to relax, stimulate circulation and relieve tension.
