TIRTA EMPUL GIANYAR, BALI
Situated in the village of Manukaya, close to the Balinese town of Tampaksiring and near the Presidential Palace, Tirta Empul is one of the largest and busiest water temples in Indonesia. The Balinese words Tirta Empul mean holy water spring. Founded in 926 A.D, the temple is dedicated to the God Vishnu, the Hindu god of water. There are four main parts to the temple including the Central Courtyard, Jaba Tengah, Jeroan and The Koi Pool. The Jaba Tengah, with its two purification pools, are the best known features of the temple and it is believed that the water in these pools has magical powers, a belief that draws large numbers of Balinese and tourists to Tirta Empul to purify themselves under the 30 water streams that feed the pools.

Angkor Wat, which means “Temple City” or “City of Temples,” is the prime example of classical Khmer architecture. Listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this complex was built for Khmer King Suriyavarman II in the 12th century as his state temple and capital city and which eventually became his mausoleum. The complex is vast and consists of hundreds of different temples. Take the time to see the whole complex, a complex that has become one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world. Senior architects familiar with the progression of Indonesian architecture have designed the Taman Nusa complex to form a harmonious unity between nature and edifice. Traditional Indonesian architecture and the verdant hills and natural vegetation of Giayar combine to form mutually complementary environment. Indonesian architecture cannot be defined in a singular form, each distinct island and region has its own unique identity which has evolved from one era to another. The ancient vernacular tradition is characterised by post foundations, an elevated living floor and a pitched roof with an extended roof ridge and outward leaning gable ends. The classical heritage of Hindu - Buddhist temples is portrayed in the form of candi or temple, a stone structure raised on a basement and surmounted by a stepped pyramidal roof, ornamented with antefixes and finials. The ideological roots of Islamic architecture resulted in the reinvention of previous building traditions to suit Muslim requirements which are identified symbolically, and the Dutch adopted indigenous architectural elements to create a form of colonial architecture known as “Indies Style. As such the Taman Nusa implies the direction for the future development of architectural expression within Indonesia’s main cultural traditions.

Open every day from 9 AM – 5 PM; visitors are invited to explore Indonesia’s journey throughout the ages, we begin in the primitive nature of the “Prehistoric Era”, and move on through the “Bronze Age”. Next is the “Kingdom Age” with perhaps its most famous masterpiece, the Borobudur Temple. The “Cultural Village” presents the diversity of Indonesian culture through its building design with more than 60 traditional houses some of which are hundreds of years old. We see how people lived by experiencing the modest village life of the many diverse and distinct ethnicities from all over Indonesia and we see examples of their crafts and performing arts. From the cultural village, we head on down through Chinatown and enter the “Early Indonesian Era”. A statue of Prime Minister Gadjah Mada, the Trowulan Temple and the Gate of Sumpah Pemuda mark the beginnings of a unified Indonesia which can be seen in this area.

We see a snapshot of the dynamics of modern Indonesian life, with 50 locomotives and 300 carriages all controlled by computers. “The Future of Indonesia” houses a library and three museums that showcase essential elements of the Nation’s cultural heritage and legacy such as wayang, batik, weaving and embroidery. The Sapu Lidi Library underscores the importance for the future of both knowledge and unity, while the museum offers the diverse culture and wisdom of the past. Song Saa Island A Paradise in Cambodia
S
ong Saa is a little patch of paradise. Located in Cambodia’s Koh Rong Archipelago, the island is just a 45-minute boat ride from Sihanoukville Port. The resort had promised a serene, luxurious escape from the chaos of Phnom Penh and we were not disappointed. We were taken care of from the moment we stepped onto the boat that would take us to the island and we enjoyed glasses of chilled prosecco, courtesy of the resort, as the beautiful island came into view. We docked on the beach where we were greeted by the resort team who immediately made us feel at home. It felt very special, like stepping into a nature reserve, there were no roads or concrete buildings, only pristine beaches and a simple wooden walkway to the main area of the resort.

The First Day Our villa was incredible—spacious, beautifully decorated and with all the modern amenities a lifestyle of luxury requires, it had a breath-taking view of the ocean and its own private pool. I later learnt that the villas have been built using salvaged wood from the mainland and most of the furniture and fittings, such as oil drum lamps and driftwood tables, are repurposed or upcycled from things that would normally be thrown away. Song Saa has managed to find a way to make sustainability look sexy. After dropping our bags off and changing into more resort-friendly clothes, we decided to check out the massage and spa treatments available, and we were right in the middle of nature. This is because Song Saa provides a sanctuary, a place surrounded by the natural environment where mind, body and soul can be recalibrated and restored to their natural balance. Needless to say by the time we left, we were glowing yet filled with a sense of inner peace.
SONG SAA ISLAND IS A MODEL FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM, ECO-CONSCIOUS WITHOUT SKIMPING ON LUXURY AND COMFORT. JOSE JEULAND SPENT FOUR DAYS ON THE ISLAND TO FIND OUT HOW THIS WELLBEING RESORT HELPS ITS VISITORS TO RECENTER THEMSELVES WHILE GIVING BACK TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.
The sun was setting by the time we had finished at the spa and I decided to take advantage of the gorgeous sunset and take a few photos. I thought I’d order some dinner and, because I was still shooting photos outside, I asked the staff just for something light but they came and set up a full dinner for my companion and I, complete with candles. The resort
encourages guests to eat wherever they want on the island so they can enjoy all the beauty that nature has to offer. I was overwhelmed by their attentive service and how they would go the extra mile to look after us. The Second Day The next morning, I sat sipping a cappuccino at the resort’s Vista restaurant, I still couldn’t believe that a place as beautiful and tranquil as this could exist. We were sitting on the waterfront with an incomparable view of the shore. I had to pinch myself—I felt like I was dreaming. The breakfast was delicious, I had fresh fruit, refreshing and shockingly cold from the freezer, and a pastry braid with salmon and cheese. It was good to know that everything we ate was organic and locally sourced from the resort’s gardens or nearby villages. Even the bread was baked on site. Breakfast over and we decided to get a little closer to nature and go on a

mangrove kayaking trail. The resort took us to the island’s mangroves in a motorboat where I shared a duo-kayak with an instructor from the island, and together we paddled our way into the mangroves. It was lush, green and very peaceful, a feeling of being the only people on earth. The instructor was very good at spotting and identifying the local wildlife and, after a spot of bird-watching, we paddled back to the boat for a tour around the island. We capped off the evening with dinner and champagne at Vista and the pleasure of some idle chatter with the other guests.
next island
The Third Day After another fabulous breakfast at Vista, we visited Prek Svay Village with representatives from the “Song Saa foundation”, Melita and Daphne, to see the sort of work the foundation is doing on the island. Mel is the owner of this little slice of paradise and founder of the Song Saa foundation. She explained to us that the foundation is dedicated to protecting and improving the islands’ unique coastal environment and works closely with local communities in the archipelago. Most of their work goes into conservation and the foundation funds a coral nursery and a tropical marine conservation programme that focuses on sea turtles, mangroves, and Cambodia’s rare seagrass meadows. The foundation also seeks to foster social and economic development within the local communities through education and by providing opportunities for employment. The beautiful resort that we have been staying in is, in fact, the backbone of a hugely important social improvement programme, and demonstrates how ecotourism can be both sustainable in the long-term, and ethical. We had our last dinner on the island at our villa’s private pool with only the ocean and the stars to keep us company.

while it is still dark, one then climbs the many steps to the top to await a magical display as the sun rises over the horizon. Slowly the silhouettes of the stupas and Buddhas come into view emerging from the darkness and the early morning mist. It is a beautiful, mesmerising sight with unforgettable transformations of colour that are impossible to put into words. The existence of this incredible 9th century Buddhist temple was first brought to international attention by Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles in 1814 during his period as the British Governor to Java. Over the years the site was progressively unearthed from multiple layers of volcanic ash and restoration began in earnest in 1975 by the Indonesian Government with cooperation from UNESCO. In 1982 Borobudur was declared its well-earned status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated further to the East approximately 17 kilometres from the city centre is the Prambanan Hindu Temple. Also a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site, the impressive temple stands in beautiful, well maintained parkland and is characterised by its imposing 47m central building within a
large complex of smaller temples. Prambanan dates from the 10th century, it is the largest Hindu Temple in Indonesia and a revered place in Hindu culture. Formerly the royal garden of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta, Taman Sari Water Castle, located 2 km south of the Palace, should be on your “things to do list while visiting Yogyakarta. The castle was built in the 18th century by a Portuguese architect as a defence post to repel enemies of the state while also providing a relaxing retreat for the Sultan and his family. Another place well worth a visit is the Parangtritis beach on the coastal area of Yogyakarta which has some of the best sunset beaches in Central Java. The beach itself is fine but beware, this is not an ideal place for swimming with its large waves and strong ocean currents. You can also visit Gua Jomblang, a cave located at the foot of Mount Kidul with an unusual shaft like vertical entrance. For local people and tourists alike Yogyakarta is a very popular place to visit, its many cultural and entertainment attributes give a holiday experience that leaves a lasting impression.

T
his UNESCO World Heritage listed city lies about 150 kilometres south of Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur and is one of the country’s most popular destinations for the many visitors that pass through every year.
Established as a small fishing village in the 14th century by the Prince of Palembang, the city of Malacca was under the colonial rule of the Portuguese, Dutch and British for hundreds of years. Malacca was well positioned to become the gateway to the spice islands and so, from soon after its foundation, the city developed rapidly and became the most important warehousing and staging port in the region, a role that continued through the profitable years of the spice trade. Portuguese traders first arrived on Malaccan soil in 1511 but then, in 1641, they surrendered power to the Dutch who controlled the trade in the area until the British took over in 1825. Malacca remained under British rule until Malaysia gained its independence in 1957. Since then Malacca has been administered as a semi-autonomous province.
next destination
Taking a one-day historical tour, I started with a walk along the winding banks of the Malacca River towards Heeren Street. This is one of the earliest streets and was built by the Dutch for the houses of The Dutch East India Company’s managing officials. In later years wealthy Chinese traders occupied the street and the opulence and ornate facades of the residences reflect the mixed cultures of its prosperous past. Next we moved on to Jalan Toko Emas and the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. Built in1673, this is one of the oldest and most revered Chinese temples in Malaysia. Jalan Toko Emas is also known as Harmony Street and is close to the Kampung Kling Mosque. This historic mosque is a Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple and is the oldest in Malaysia. The highlight for me was a visit to the Stadthuys. Built in 1650 as the official residence for the Dutch Governors, this building is a fine example of the Dutch architecture of the period. The building has been well preserved and maintained to retain its original form with its distinctive bright red exterior. In the same area as the Stadhuys, we find the Victorian Fountain and Christ Church and the combined historical interest make this probably the most photographed area of Malacca. While in Malacca don’t forget to make a stop at Jonker Street where you’ll find numerous restaurants and craft shops, here you can buy your souvenirs and sample some distinctive Malaccan cuisine.
Malacca, with its rich historical past and easy access from the world travel hub of Kuala Lumpur, is a fascinating place for a short getaway or an interesting diversion on a longer journey.

angkok is famous for its waterways and for centuries its river and khlongs (canals) have played a vital part in the city’s daily life as its major thoroughfares, for commuting and trade. Festivals and ceremonies take part on the river, and many of the city’s most famous buildings line its banks. To fully enjoy the majesty of Bangkok you can step aboard the brand new Supanniga 40 seat cruise boat from which you can enjoy the sights of the city from the Chao Phraya River. The décor of the boat is a reflection of Supanniga’s design philosophy; accessible and modern while respecting the depth of Thailand’s rich cultural heritage. There are several cruise options available. You can cruise the river and enjoy Bangkok’s beautiful sunsets accompanied by drinks and snacks by taking the Evening Cocktail Cruise or the Evening Champagne Cruise. For a more specialised option, there is the Tattinger Sunset Cruise which comes accompanied by Tattinger champagne which is available during weekends. Wonderful Indonesian Cuisine AT DOUBLE IKAT
An exciting addition to the Bali culinary scene, Double Ikat is a casual yet elegant dining venue serving authentic Indonesian cuisine and located at the Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa. Jl. Pantai Balangan I No.1, Ungasan, Bali Tel. +62 361 2003588 Renaissancebali.com
‘Ikat’ is the name of a traditional Indonesian weaving technique, a craft which sets the whole tone for this intimate, yet casual, restaurant. The dining area is designed to recreate the warm hospitality usually found in Indonesian homes. Rows of tables are separated by screens made to resemble threaded looms set on wooden frames, creating an iconic backdrop and an ambience of intimacy. The plates are decorated with a crisscross pattern to reflect the craft of weaving, and the cushion covers express the rich colours and patterns from Indonesian Ikat. Double Ikat offers home-cooking dishes from various regions of Indonesia and uses only the best quality ingredients sourced locally. Care is taken to ensure that the flavours are faithful to the original recipes and are enhanced
through careful preparation and presentation. You might like to start your meal with Tahu Isi (stuffed tofu), one of the all-time favourite Indonesian light bites, and Asinan Jakarta, a refreshing salad. For your main course, Babi Guling (suckling pig) is highly recommended, this is Bali’s most famous local dish and is very popular with its juicy meat, crispy pork skin crackling and served with a traditional sauce. If you prefer fish, Ikan Balado (fish cooked in a balado sauce) is the ideal choice and should be eaten with a bowl of steamed rice. There is no better way to complete such a wonderful dining experience than a portion of Bolu Caramel with ice cream, a soft Indonesian caramel sponge cake.

pon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a friendly spa receptionist and a therapist will walk with you to your treatment room. The Spa has 16 treatment rooms, a beauty salon and extensive pre- and post-treatment relaxation areas and the spa menu combines traditional spa services and Balinese healing practices with holistic wellness programs for rejuvenating the body, mind, and spirit. One of the spa’s signature treatments is a Couple Ritual inspired by the Balinese love story of Jayaprana and Layonsari. An ideal option for couples this treatment starts with the traditional burning of Balinese incense as a special blessing. Different scrub treatments are then applied, an invigorating champaka scrub for her and coffee scrub for him, to leave the skin stimulated, smooth and refreshed. Next, both are cocooned in an elemental honey milk body wrap and a scalp massage is applied. The wrap is followed by a nourishing Dedari Facial to emulate the rapture Jayaprana experienced when he first laid eyes on Layonsari. The loving ritual ends with a deeply relaxing full body massage.

Living in Bali provides Wayan Aksara with the wonderful opportunity of capturing a multitude of cultural activities that occur on a daily basis. Taking up photography in 2014, he attends every cultural event he can so he doesn’t miss those elusive photographic masterpieces. The myriad of colourful and exotic performances and ceremonies make truly fascinating subjects for the camera. Wayan is continually learning, working to increase his understanding of every aspect of Balinese culture so it can enable him to find the best angle, to compose the best shot. Every image tells a different story. To immerse oneself in Bali’s culture and atmosphere and to discover the inspiration that capturing these experiences yield is the reason why so many photographers find themselves on Bali’s shores. Probably the most photogenic event is the Melasti ceremony, held on the evening before the Nyepi day of silence. This is a time when every town and village across the island parades huge paper mache effigies of demons and monsters in front of wildly enthusiastic crowds. It is an amazing event for any serious photography.
