What Andy Warhol called “the Smithsonian of rock and roll,” Hard Rock Cafe has always brought people together around good food, a vibrant atmosphere and, most importantly, a love of music. The Hard Rock Cafe has been around for longer than you might think but, just like Jagger, we’re still rocking and rolling. The Hard Rock brand has left its mark throughout the history of rock and roll itself, all because two cool guys wanted to open a cafe for everyone. What Andy Warhol called “the Smithsonian of rock and roll,” Hard Rock Cafe has always brought people together around good food, a vibrant atmosphere and, most importantly, a love of music. From Houston to Honolulu, Paris to Pretoria, there is always a place to rock. Hard Rock Cafe has numerous locations all across the planet, and each one provides the one-of-a-kind rock star treatment that has made the brand a global phenomenon. In Bali there are two Hard Rock Cafes – the first is located right in front of Kuta Beach and has been rocking the island for 25 years already, offering the best live music experience every night and the highest quality American food & signature cocktails. The second is located in the International Departure Terminal of Ngurah Rai Airport so, if you are planning to travel overseas from Bali, there is no better place to wait for your flight and grab some world famous souvenir merchandise.

Azerai Celebrates Debut of Second Hotel in Vietnam History is being made in Hue, Vietnam, with the opening of the Azerai La Residence. The former residence of the French Resident Superieure has been stripped and redesigned in order to create a beautiful space reflecting hotelier Adrian Zecha’s goal of simplicity and elegance. Set on the south bank of the fabled Perfume River, the 122-room hotel now boasts a new spa equipped with six treatment rooms and offering steam, sauna and ice fountains. The hotel’s gymnasium was relocated and restocked with new state of the art equipment. The hotel’s bar, Le Gouverneur, and the hotel’s restaurant, Le Parfum, were both redesigned to follow Azerai’s design aesthetic. The Azerai La Residence marks the second hotel in the new group formed by Zecha. His motivation has been to create a compelling and elegant space that will serve as the quintessential hospitality experience in the city while being offered at an affordable price point. Hue natives anticipate the hotel will become one of the most compelling hospitality venues in Southeast Asia.
The Reverie Saigon Private Yacht The hotel that redefined high-class accommodation in Saigon has once again raised the bar on luxury hospitality to be had in Vietnam with the launch of its very own yacht. With the debut of its latest acquisition, a 60-foot Monte Carlo 6, The Reverie Saigon is weighing anchor with a crew of three and a private butler offering bespoke excursions along the storied Saigon River including champagne picnics. Spacious enough to very comfortably accommodate 10 guests yet suitably compact to navigate tributaries that lead to picturesque mangroves and tucked-away local villages, The Reverie yacht will begin operations by offering private charters of two-and-a-half (Saigon Intermezzo), five (Saigon Avventura) and eight hours (Saigon Spettacolare). The 32-ton yacht is finished with teak wood and exquisite leatherwork and offers spacious interior living and dining areas. There are additional spaces on the main deck and on the Monte Carlo 6’s flybridge above (complete with a retractable roof) in which to lounge and dine al fresco. Out on the foredeck, there are electronically controlled sun loungers complemented by a built-in outdoor sound system with Bluetooth connectivity, while below decks is a spacious master bedroom with ensuite, a fully equipped walk-in kitchen, a separate powder room and a multi-purpose seating area. A built-in outdoor barbecue on the stern deck beckons the hire of a private chef.

Amed Amed is a diver’s paradise and a great place to relax and explore the secrets of Bali’s underwater world. Made up of seven villages that run along Bali’s northern coast, the pace life in this area is slow and you can take the time to sit back and enjoy the breathtaking coastal scenery. Mount Agung, Bali’s largest volcano and the home of the Gods, provides a dramatic backdrop rising above the small town with its underwater playgrounds, historic shipwrecks, traditional jukung outriggers and azure waters. These traditional fishing villages also used to be an important area for traditional salt farmers. If you rise early, you can witness dramatic sunrises over Bali’s glistening ocean to start your day off on a high. Next, grab a snorkel or scuba gear and a waterproof camera to capture the breathtaking beauty that lies beneath Amed’s waters. Most visitors to Ahmed are attracted by the “USS Liberty”, a historic shipwreck in Tulamben Bay that is home to tropical fish, sea turtles, reef tip sharks, rays and vibrant coral gardens. Only developed for tourism since 2000, the landscape is still relatively unspoilt with lush palm trees, green rice terraces and magnificent rolling hills.

gitgit waterfal In Bali waterfalls not only add dramatic elements to the lush tropical landscape but are also known for their healing properties. Gitgit is no exception, located in Bali’s central highlands it offers a perfect day out to see the power of nature in a stunning natural setting. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the crowded tourist areas, Gitgit is known as one of the most famous waterfalls in Bali. Only a short 10km drive south of North Bali’s main town of Singaraja, the falls are easily accessible from the main road connecting Bedugul and Singaraja. To reach the falls, you wend your way along a path through the jungle and down the side of a ravine where you get your first glimpse of the 40m cascade as it tumbles into space and falls into a rocky pool at the bottom. Beside the falls is a small shrine that ‘guards’ the site offering peace and protection to those who come for a quick dip. The waterfall is referred to as the ‘twin falls’ by the locals owing to the way the water divides into two streams as it tumbles over the edge and, standing beneath, you feel the power of the water and the full force of nature.

With the festival being held only once every 12 years, Kumbh Mela is one of the most anticipated human migration events of the 21st century. An incredible 150 million Hindu devotees will gather over a period of 50 days to take their sacred immersion, making the Kumbh Mela recognised as the largest peaceful gathering of people on the planet. Research shows that the festival has been a regular event for over 2000 years and the timing at each site is determined by astrological calculation based on the positions of the Sun, the Moon, and Jupiter. This year, the Kumbh Mela was held at the meeting point of three rivers, known as the Triveni Sangam. The Ganges and the Yamuna meet here, and a mythical third river called the Saraswati completes the trio. The Kumbh Mela is made up of many rituals the most significant of which is the bathing ritual. Pilgrims bathe at the confluence of the three sacred rivers. The holy waters of the Ganges are believed to wash away the worshippers’ sins and deliver them to moksha and the liberation from the cycle of birth and death leaving them eternally blessed. This why so many Hindus bathe in sacred rivers on important dates.
K U M B H M ELA 2 0 1 9 H i n d u m y t h o l o gy Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India from 15 January to 4 March 2019 “The largest peaceful human gathering on the planet” Singapore-based French photographer, José Jeuland, has an extensive portfolio of documentary and travel photography with a specialist interest in portraiture. Between January to February this year, José travelled to India to explore the country’s rich culture and heritage, and in particular he went to the Kumbh Mela, a religious celebration known as the world’s largest gathering of humanity. A Maha (“Great”) Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years, with an Ardha (“Half ”) Kumbh Mela six years later. The Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage where Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred or holy river. It rotates through 4 different locations and this year was held in Allahabad, a city previously known as Prayagrai, many people still prefer to use this earlier name. Kumbh Mela is on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

journey José flew from Singapore to Delhi on 25 January 2019 and stayed in Delhi for two and a half days before making his way on to Allahabad by night train. On 28 January 2019, José stepped foot for the first time in the Kumbh Mela at the Triveni Sangam, Allahabad. It was the beginning of an incredible experience as he started to understand the sheer scale of this enormous event as it slowly revealed itself as, day after day, the crowds grew and grew. José was staying in a hotel in the city of Allahabad, and each day he would travel a distance of six kilometres to the site by tuk-tuk, bike or, on some days, by walking. This vast holy festival spreads over thousands of hectares around the Sangam area. People of all social classes and from all corners of India and the world assembled there. The infrastructure to support such a huge event is a miracle in itself and was very organised with a strong presence of military and police personnel. The site was fully lit-up at night, and each zone had its own specification for tents, temples, food, transport and medical services. There were sufficient hygiene facilities with an abundance of toilets and water fountains.

journey Many activities were held as part of the festival including religious ceremonies, entertainment parks, book exhibitions and sales, yoga events and a range of performances. There is the ceremonial procession of Akharas (sects or religious groups) which, riding on elephant backs, horses and chariots and armed with shining swords, march over a makeshift bridge over the Ganges river. One of the more interesting events was the Sadhus performance. The Sadhus are people (most of whom with very long hair) who appear naked or with just a small piece of cloth to cover their private parts. They wear all sorts of accessories and cover their skin with a layer of ash or coloured powder making their skin appear white in colour. José encountered all sorts of incredible things he would have thought he could only see in movies, such as the Sadhus show, tattoos on the street and a centrifuge car show.
Mauni Amvasya, 4 February The most important date was the 4th of February when somewhere between 35 to 50 million worshippers took a ceremonial dip in the holy river. It was believed that the planetary positions were the most favourable for bathing in the sacred river on that day. It was the largest number of pilgrims ever recorded in history to gather together during the entire Kumbh Mela. On that day José walked all the way from his hotel to the site and every road was packed with people as far as the eye could see, an ocean of humanity, both locals and international visitors, coming together in this holy place from all around the world. It was a sight to behold, and the human traffic never seemed to end. It was not easy for José to handle his camera in the dense crowds, so he stationed himself in the holy water to get the best shots. It was, indeed, a very intense day and thankfully, the safety aspects were well planned and managed by the authorities. It is overwhelming to see so many people come together in such a spirit of peace and harmony. Many homes and religious camps extended the hand of hospitality providing free food to the people, many people collected holy water and sand from the river to take back home with them, and José was surrounded by friendly people many of whom asked him for a selfie.

The Maldives The Robinson Crusoe Experience We all cherish a dream of experiencing “The Journey of a Lifetime” at sometime in our lives and the Maldives with its white powdery beaches, graceful palm trees and endless stretches of silvery white sands offers some of the world’s most pristine coral reefs and a bewildering array of underwater sea life on planet earth.

f statistics are anything to go by, in the hyper-competitive European market, the Maldives is one of the most popular tropical tourist destinations. The Maldivian government has come out with a slew of packages to augment ecotourism alongside its policy to protect the fragile ecosystems and underwater life. After a smooth touchdown at Malé international airport, the one-hour speedboat ride to the majestic Taj Coral Reef Resort & Spa, easily one of the Maldives’ top high-end luxury resorts, was truly breathtaking. Being an Indian, it was only natural that I would have a soft spot for a Resort which is truly Indian - the outstanding Taj Coral Reef Resort & Spa on mysterious Hembadhu Island which offers absolute luxury with its thatched-roof villas against the surreal backdrop of a tropical hideaway.
Apart from being the capital of the Maldives, Male, with a population of 133,412 is also the most populous city spanning beautifully over 5.8 square kilometres. The city is located strategically at the southern perimeter of Kaafu Atoll. The best thing about holidaying in the Maldives is that much of the archipelago remains unspoilt and with 1,190 coral islands dotting the landscape offers today’s discerning travellers a bewildering choice of places to visit and an array of tropical indulgences ranging from Jet-skiing to Wind Surfing. A vast majority of the Maldivian Islands are just six feet above sea level and, for administrative purposes, these islands have been arranged into nineteen exclusive administrative zones popularly referred to as the ‘Atolls’ in the local parlance.

There are Atolls, which have been ingeniously converted into romantic hideaways where there is nothing apart from the sun and surf. The choice is never easy and as many as ninety high-end resort islands vie for attention and almost all of them guarantee you with the freedom to explore this tropical paradise at your own pace. The Maldives may be small in size but mark my words - per capita it happens to be the world’s busiest tourist area with half a million people descending here every year to discover paradise on earth. I was taken by surprise when I got to know how this small island nation has been playing a pioneering role in creating awareness about the burning issue of Climate Change. Hmm, it isn’t just the Western nations that are vociferous when it comes to an issue as sensitive as Climate Change! It is little wonder that today anyone travelling to the Maldives is taken aback by the bewildering variety of water sports, unmatched diving spots and snorkelling options. Bear in mind, the Maldives has for centuries been a meeting point for African, Arab, Malay and Indonesian sea traders and you will find a whiff of this in the laidback Maldivian lifestyle. For instance, Bodu Beru - the most popular musical expression, is every bit African and was introduced to the Maldives in the 19th century by African slaves, while the Thaara form of music is distinctly from the Middle East.

The Maldives as a nation is unique in terms of indigenous culture and this is reflected in the attire worn by the simple village folk. Their clothes are dexterity personified. Maldivian music and dance is the spontaneous expression of the islanders’ lifestyle, so much so that these unique dance forms are routinely practised in schools even today just to keep the traditional nature of these otherwise dying dance forms from vanishing. The average Maldivian is pretty skilled in terms of craftsmanship and these skills find their expression in the form of dexterous coral stone carvings at Hukuru Miskiiy, the lacquer paintings and the magically woven mats by the womenfolk of Fioari. For calligraphic splendour, you only need to visit the mosques that are spread out all across this island nation.
Traveller’s Fact File: Getting There: The Maldives is well connected by air from Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Journey time from Singapore and Dubai takes around four hours. From Europe, the journey time varies from 9 to 11 hours.
So what is stopping you from holidaying in the world’s most popular tropical hideaway?
Accommodation: A variety of accommodation options are available in the Maldives, ranging from luxury to budget hotels and resorts. Apart from the capital, Male, top-end hospitality options in the form of guest houses are readily available on the neighbouring islands of Hulhumale’ and Villingili that are well connected by regular ferry boats and speed launches. Popular 5 star hotels in the Maldives are - Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, Four Seasons Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru and, of course, many more. Life Beyond the City Yogyakarta It is little surprise that Yogyakarta is one of the most popular places for touring in Indonesia. Classic outings include the sunrise at Borobudur, photo shoots at Prambanan and jeep tours through Mount Merapi.
T
he streets of Yogyakarta pulse with rich Javanese culture, mesmerising art and a wealth of historical traditions, but most visitors never explore the hidden treasures that surround this city. On arriving in Yogyakarta, I took two days exploring the neighbouring city of Solo and travelling around to some of the city’s top tourist destinations. Solo is a town only 60 kilos from Yogyakarta and is famous for its high quality fabrics, amazing food and lively atmosphere. Stop at the Klewer Market where beautiful batiks can be bought at bargain prices. Enjoy one of Solo’s signature dishes at the Omah Sinten Heritage Hotel and spend your afternoons listening to live Javanese music and learning about the city’s history. After a tasty meal, consider heading to the foot of Mount Lawu to visit the Sukuh and Cetho temples. End your trip at the Saturday Night Market in Ngarsopuro to stimulate your taste buds with some mouth-watering street food and to find a few Solo souvenirs.

If you’d like some time away from the city, head to Yogyakarta’s beautiful beaches for a short day trip. The two-hour drive to Timang Beach flies by as you weave through a natural landscape offering fascinating views of the city. Once you arrive, enjoy the pristine white sand and hop onto a cable car gondola that runs between the beach and Panjang Island. Most of the beaches in this area have not been developed so you can enjoy their laid-back beauty having escaped the crowds of the city. Before making your way back to city life, make sure to enjoy a dinner of locally caught lobster at one of the many beach restaurants with their divine cuisine and breathtaking sunsets. Yogyakarta boasts some beautiful landscapes beyond its beaches, so make sure to take advantage of some of these places, especially The Goa Jomblang Cave, which is located only one hour from Yogyakarta and is an excellent place for an afternoon outing. Your adventure starts as you are lowered 50 meters into a massive sinkhole. This crazy sensation is only matched by the experience of following passages through the underground system of caves. The best moment of the trip is when you turn a corner and are greeted by rays of light pouring in through a small crack in the roof of the Grubug cave. It is an amazing sight that leaves you spellbound by the breathtaking underground beauty and the grandeur of this hidden landscape.

Escape to the Himalayas
Photo credited to Nina Putu.
Nepal is inextricably linked to the Himalayas and stunning mountain landscapes and, as might be expected, on arriving in the country I was awestruck by its incredible beauty.
I
Photo Courtesy of The Pavilions Himalayas
planned to trek the Annapurna Circuit, which leads to the base camp of the world’s 11th highest mountain but, before setting out, I basked in the glory that Nepal has to offer with luxury hotels, vibrant streets, kind locals and as many ‘momos’ as I could eat.
Before heading out to the mountains, I explored Kathmandu and its enthralling street markets where I stocked up on some warm gear for the trek. While spending time looking through Nepalese trinkets and clothing, it is a good idea to stop in at any of the small restaurants for some dal-bhat-tarkaril, a famous Nepalese dish of lentil soup, boiled grains, rice and vegetable curry.
Photo credited to Nina Putu.
Travel groups make trekking easy as they offer bag assistance, accommodation and a local guide to take you through the whole experience. Hikes can be split into as many days as you would like, with most lasting around 17 days. My time was spent taking in the scenery and enjoying the unexpectedly delicious food offered throughout the circuit. It is easy find highquality Nepalese meals or international delights to satisfy the mountain cravings. The trek can be challenging in places, but rest assured that there will always be a warm cup of tea or a cold beer to greet you around the next corner. At night, you can regain your strength at one of the many locally run, comfortable guesthouses or teahouses. On your way down the mountain, you can soak away your soreness at one of the many natural hot springs found along the way and, once your trekking adventure is complete, you can finish your trip by relaxing in one of Nepal’s wonderful spa centres. Before heading home, I took the time to seek out some true healing of the body, mind and spirit in a natural body scrub, shirodhara (hot oil treatment) and a traditional Ayurveda massage, all are unique treatments to Nepalese culture. I left feeling balanced, tranquil and truly grateful for my Nepalese adventure.
Having “done” Katmandu it was off to Nepal’s second largest city, Pokhara. Here we find quaint hostels and boarding houses along the base of the Himalayas ready to accommodate those preparing for their treks. Lakeside Pokhara is the perfect place to take in magnificent views and enjoy some delicious food. You can chose from any range of hotels in the area, but my favourite is the Pavilions Himalayas resort. Nestled in a natural paradise of lush forest it is a place that inspires you to get up early and explore Nepal’s natural beauty.

Guests can feast on the incredible views while savouring inspired dishes such as Fermented Java Green Tea Salad; Roasted Duck Breast with Ubi Gratin and Dragonfruit Gastrique; Rack of Lamb with Ghee Carrot Puree, Petai and Fermented Black Garlic Jus; and Strawberries & Cream: compressed Bedugul Strawberries, Kemangi Ice Cream, Coconut Mousse with Strawberry Firecracker Sorbet.
A sumptuous meal must be accompanied by suitable drinks. The Bar Manager/ Mixologist at di Mare works closely with Chef Joseph, they inspire each other with their ingredients and techniques, harmonising and/or contrasting the flavours to pair imaginative drinks with their culinary creations.
Chef Joseph also offers some of the more familiar dishes one might expect while holidaying in Indonesia such as nasi goreng and urab but, what sets these dishes apart from the crowd, is the unusual preparation his team has devised making clever use of local ingredients. Cuka is a handmade vinegar prepared by the family of one of Karma’s cooks and is used in making Scallop Ceviche with Torch Ginger Flower and Pomelo. Petai, also known locally as “stinky bean” is braised for hours in extra virgin olive oil with red bumbu and citrus before being served with grilled octopus. Almond anise flavoured Kluwak is used as the base for Rawon - a famous Javanese soup and occasionally as an ice cream flavour. All of di Mare’s ice cream is made from scratch in-house. Enjoy the winding pathways through lush green gardens that lead you down to the spa centre. Koi carp ponds and grand views of tropical jungle will greet you as you begin your day of total relaxation. Relax to the sound of natural breezes that waft gently through the open spaces as you find your way to your private treatment room.
Before and after treatments, you can use the additional facilities provided including a hot stone bath, the cold jet set vitality pool, the chill bar and the decompression (detox/oxygen) lounge. For my treatment, it was suggested I try the 90 minutes Morning After – DETOX Massage. Foot cleansing was the first ritual, followed by a bamboo stretching exercise in the semi-outdoor area located in front of the treatment room. The skilful, attentive therapist instructed the moves designed to relax the muscles before continuing on to the main treatment. This treatment has been cleverly devised for people feeling overtired from a long night out or from excessive work. As the name suggests, Morning After-Detox gives you a real boost, leaving you more energised and rejuvenated. Herbal oils infused with fresh lime, basil, mint and rosemary leaves are generously applied to the body, and the therapist begins the treatment using a combination of fingers, hands and forearm pressure along with friction. I found it highly beneficial, all the muscular aches and pains slowly disappeared, and by the end, I felt completely relaxed and revitalised.

A Day at the Ancient Temple of Angkor Wat

rriving at Phnom Penh Airport in the morning I am greeted with a story to write in almost every direction. Once again I am lost in that magic spell that always brings me back to travelling and the endless search for places as strange
and secluded as possible. Why Cambodia? There is, of course, only one answer - Angkor Wat; a cluster of temples hidden within hectares of Cambodia’s forests and one of the largest religious monuments in the world. Angkor Wat was inaugurated as a UNESCO
TropicaLife.net

Before setting out to Angkor Wat I thought I’d see some of Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh and, to kill some time, I took a short walk around the city. I found it quite clean though rather dusty and the traffic is no less chaotic than back home in Indonesia. I was fascinated by the spirit houses; a form a mini temple built in front of each house where the spirits live. The temples and mega buddhas in the suburbs of the city make Cambodia significantly different from other Southeast Asian countries. I took a local flight and a few hours later landed in Siam Reap, a town I had thought would be only a small village and quite remote, it turned out I was wrong. Siam Reap is a thriving town, advanced and well maintained. There are many luxury hotels and villas along the main roads, the occasional magnificent Buddhist temple and monks walking around the streets of the city. A single entrance ticket gave me access to all areas of the extensive site. Angkor Thom (the Great City) was built in the late 12th century by Khmer King Suryawarman the 7th as the capital of his empire. Passing through the main entrance, we are retracing the well-worn steps of the ages lined with ancient stone walls carved with images of gods and goddesses, graphic representations of mythological stories that render these temples and palaces as sacred places for pilgrims. Beyond the front courtyard of the city, we find the site of an old palace with a large artificial pool that is crossed by a bridge, it is reminiscent of a scene in a Tomb Rider movie where Angelina Jolie rides in a boat in the middle of a lake full of floating lotus flowers. Even though in places we are only left with rubble we can still imagine the former grandeur of these ancient structures.

TropicaLife.net
Out of the main temple area, I headed to a group of temples hidden in the middle of the forest. These are the remains of a palace built by King Jayavarman the 7th and presented as an offering to the queen, better known as Ta Phrom, who was the King’s mother at that time. The walls have almost collapsed from the inexorable advance of the roots of towering trees which have already pulverised the doors and the temple windows. It is a harsh reminder that, sooner or later, nature will always win out over the marvellous creations of mankind. These magnificent buildings being slowly swallowed up by the jungle should not be considered as damage; instead, they add to the beauty of Angkor Wat. Wat Bayon is my favourite temple, Bayan means Jaya Giri or Victory Mountain. Built by King Jayavarman the 4th, this is a temple filled with carved Buddha faces that smile in welcome on anyone who enters this sacred area. Large, friendly faces that were carved hundreds of years ago are still brightly lit by the sun’s radiance, making the scenery of Wat Bayon even more magical. There are many more temple buildings in the Angkor Wat area, far too many to see in only one day, but it is never dull to enjoy such places taking your mind back to imagine what life was like when kings and queens strode the corridors of these palaces. The area of Angkor Wat temples is closed in the evenings to avoiding vandalism and the theft of artefacts which is why Angkor Wat area is protected by heavy doors, gates and walls. Visitors are also asked not to sit, climb or lean on the ancient, weathered structures of the temples. I ended my trip mingling with some monks and their students on a pilgrimage to Angkor Wat and thinking back to the times of the hidden Kingdom in the Cambodian jungle, why not?
