Team TT Small island

with lots to offer

We at TT are immensely proud of Saint Lucia, and justifiably so. Wonderful climate, stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, Caribbean sea, friendly people . . . The list goes on. Here our Publisher, Editor and Creative Director reveal what stands out for them and how easy it is for you to have a slice of our lovely island life.

E

njoy our island for there is no better way to celebrate than ‘Looshan Style!' We love to move our bodies to the music so dance the season away to the rhythms of steel pan music and parang. One of our favourite holiday traditions is to drink sorrel — it’s our special Christmas drink, made from sorrel plant spiced with cloves, and can be consumed with or without alcohol. Try it with a slice of Saint Lucian black cake (Yum yum!) made from fruits, a variety of nuts and ginger, all soaked in rum for months. Beware as a bite can be intoxicating! Another tradition in the lead-up to Christmas is bamboo bursting, usually practiced by teenage boys determined to wake up the neighbourhood. They hollow out some bamboo, pour in kerosene and, with some literally daredevil blows through a hole, create a loud cannon sound which is actually magical! In December the Lantern Festival and the Festival of Carols are worth attending. The Festival of Lights is a spectacle of lights in the centre of town, usually accompanied by the Parade of Lanterns (see page 40). We invite you to embrace the traditions of Saint Lucia for a truly memorable vacation.

W

e are fortunate at Tropical Traveller; not only do we live on a beautiful island with year-round warmth and sunshine, we also have rewarding and fun occupations — we research, experience and write about the wonderful sights, villages, tours, restaurants and resorts that Saint Lucia has to offer. When we at Team TT give a recommendation it is because we want to spread the word about something we have tried and liked. We can’t cover everything in detail in each issue, and we realize that some readers are energetic while others prefer to chill out and do . . . well, not a lot. This inspirational island has the ability to please everybody. Besides our featured items, we list more options in the directories at the back of the magazine (see pages 5256). Saint Lucians anywhere will be more than happy to give you further advice. We are known as a friendly nation so chat to a local as you may be amazed and delighted with what you learn. In case you are wondering about the photo above, it’s the wine cellar at Positano Santa Lucia at Harbor Club (see page 36) and the sommelier’s recommendation was spot on!

H

i, I’m Linda. I was born in Sweden. I met my husband Val when I moved to Saint Lucia. Our three children, Dexter, Maxwell and Kenya (Editor’s note: the beautiful kids featured on this issue’s front cover) were all born here. We love living on this island but we have taken the kids to Scandinavia a couple of times so that they can learn to appreciate the different cultures of the world. Christmas-time is extended fun in our household as we mix European and Caribbean tradition. We first celebrate Christmas the Swedish way, on 24th December, and the kids each receive a little gift then. When we wake up on 25th December we celebrate again in true Caribbean style, with Nanny, Grandad and the rest of our close family who live here. Nanny will have been up all night cooking. She prepares a huge table laden with dishes galore. The aromas fill the house together with the children’s laughter and squeals of delight when they open more presents. The whole day is just enchanting! Whatever time of the season you visit Saint Lucia, I wish you as much joy and happiness as my family is blessed to experience.

Visitors Q&A

Tourist Talk

Vanessa Ensign

BRIANNA AND RYAN

MEDFORD, OREGON, USA

GRAND PRAIRIE, ALBERTA, CANADA

We found Vanessa enjoying the waters of Rodney Bay.

We spotted this couple at The Landings.

TT: Hi there! What brings you to Saint Lucia? Brianna: It’s a vacation that coincided with my birthday. TT: Happy birthday! How did you celebrate? Brianna: We spent a few days at Ladera Resort, near Soufriere. It was wonderful: our accommodation had an open wall, a stunning view of the Pitons and a pool within the room itself. TT: What else have you been doing? Ryan: Playing golf at Sandals Golf and Country Club, hiking Pigeon Island and making the most of the beach and sea. TT: Where do you recommend for dining? Brianna: There is a good selection of restaurants here at The Landings. We also like going to Rodney Bay — Big Chef is top of our list; the steaks are superb and it’s fun when there is live entertainment. Ryan: The steakhouse at Outback [at Jam Rock] is also good. On Sundays we enjoy walking down the beach to visit ‘The Fire Man’ and his grill tent next to The Landings. He

serves by far the best chicken I’ve ever had. That and an ice-cold Piton beer make me a happy man! TT: It sounds like you know Saint Lucia well. Brianna: I’ve been coming every year since 2008. It’s a delight to come back to somewhere familiar where we know the people and places. Ryan: This island has a special place in my heart. I’ve travelled the world but Saint Lucia always draws me back. It’s probably the people; they are so friendly and welcoming. Our regular taxi driver, Tim [Tim’s Tours, St. Lucia] has been super helpful and knowledgeable. TT: So, who is your canine companion? Brianna: This is Lu. She came up to us on our first day on the beach and we’ve fallen in love with her. SLAPS [Saint Lucia Animal Protection Society] is helping us so that we can take her back to Canada. TT: Lucky Lu! What else are you taking home? Ryan: Happy memories, a full heart and two more puppies!

@tropicaltraveller

TT: You look like you’re having a blast! Vanessa: I sure am! I love being on the water. It’s one of the reasons I come to Saint Lucia every year. TT: What else do you enjoy doing here? Vanessa: I’m down at the beach every day. I like mixing with locals and feeling the vibe at the street parties. And I’m interested in culture so I enjoy exploring the island while learning its history. TT: What is your top tourist attraction? Vanessa: I have two: boat rides and the mud baths at the volcano. TT: Where is your favourite place? Vanessa: Pigeon Island. It has history, walks, great views and one of my favourite restaurants, Jambe de Bois. TT: Which local foods and drinks do you like?

#tropicaltraveller

Vanessa: A Piton beer hits the spot! And the local spiced rum has a great flavour and kick. I like my spices so chili-spiced chicken with macaroni pie is my feel-good food. TT: What souvenirs do you take home? Vanessa: Rum and shot glasses, and local art. TT: So we’ll see you same time next year? Vanessa: Absolutely!

I’m down at the beach every day. I like mixing with locals and feeling the vibe at the street parties

MANGO BOWL REGATTA

ARC

Atlantic Rally for Cruisers This annual crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, leaving from Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, finishes in the Caribbean. The first boats are expected to arrive at IGY Rodney Bay Marina around 5th December. Locals and visitors to the island are invited to join the valiant sailors plus their family and friends at the ARC-related activities.

The ARC has commenced in November of every year since 1986. New for 2018 is the option to finish in St. Vincent but we all know that Saint Lucia welcomes ARC participants and supporters with open arms, not to mention the chilled beer and rum punch at the official finish line. The organiser, World Cruising Club, highlights that the ARC is not a race but safe and social cruising with an element of fun competition. And we all love to help in the celebrations as the crews reach their destination after a long, arduous journey. Entertainment includes plenty of live music, cultural activities and parties.

Sunday 2nd December • Cruising Class 1: two races • Cruising Class 2: two races • Racing Class: two races • J/24, Surprise: three races

Sustainability

The Mango Bowl Regatta is now proud to be partnered with Sailors for the Sea, an organisation whose mission is to educate and engage the boating community in the worldwide protection of the oceans. Under its Clean Regattas programme, the Mango Bowl was last year certified as a Silver Level Clean Regatta. By participating in this programme, and with the help of local business Greening the Caribbean, the organisers of the Mango Bowl Regatta are bringing awareness to participants and the local community of how to reduce waste and help keep our sea clean.

Social Activities

All are welcome to soak up the fun atmosphere at the social gatherings after each day’s racing: Saturday 1st December, 1900 hrs - Prize Giving and Fete at IGY Rodney Bay Marina. Sunday 2nd December, 1300 hrs - Prize Giving and BBQ at St. Lucia Yacht Club.

SIR WILLIAM ARTHUR LEWIS

Arthur Lewis was born in Castries in 1915. He was a bright student, completing the school curriculum before he was old enough to apply for university. He worked as a clerk until 1932 when he won a scholarship to the London School of Economics and studied for a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He graduated with first class honours and the LSE awarded him a scholarship for a Ph.D. In Industrial Economics. A teaching appointment followed and he rose rapidly up the academic ladder, becoming a full professor at the UK’s University of Manchester in 1948. Lewis had two other areas of interest: the history (since 1870) of world economics, and development economics. During his academic career, which included a new professorship at Princeton University in the United States in 1963, he published many articles and books, including The Theory of Economic Growth, in 1955. During his working life, Lewis acted as a UN Economic Advisor to the prime minister of Ghana, as Deputy Managing Director of the UN Special Fund and as Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies. He set up the Caribbean Development Bank and was selected as its first president. Sir Arthur received his knighthood in 1963. The 1979 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was shared with Theodore Schultz of the US “for their pioneering research into economic development research with particular consideration of the problems of developing countries.” Sir Arthur died on 15 June, 1991. His tomb is at the Saint Lucian institution that bears his name: Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. The Arthur Lewis Building at the University of Manchester was also named in his honour.

SIR DEREK ALTON WALCOTT

Derek and his twin brother Roderick were born in Castries in 1930. Their childhood home at 17 Chaussee Road, renovated and named Walcott House, is now a visitor centre. As a young teenager Derek wrote and self-published poetry while training in his other passion, painting. He received a scholarship to study at the then University College of the West Indies in Jamaica and, after graduating, moved to Trinidad and worked as a theatre and art critic, teacher and journalist. He founded the Trinidad Theatre Workshop. In 1981 Walcott took up a post at Boston University teaching literature and writing. That same year he founded the Boston Playwrights' Theatre and received the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (“genius award”). He received the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 1988. Walcott’s output was prolific. In addition to penning large quantities of verse, he wrote more than 25 plays, the most famous being Dream on Monkey Mountain which was broadcast on NBC in the United States in 1970. His epic poem Omeros was published in 1990. This Caribbean-style nod to Homer, set mainly in Saint Lucia, won him the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature; the Nobel committee described the work as “a poetic oeuvre of great luminosity, sustained by a historical vision, the outcome of a multicultural commitment.” In 2009 Walcott began a three-year distinguished scholar-in-residence position at the University of Alberta, Canada. In 2010 he became Professor of Poetry at the University of Essex, England. In 2016 he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia and bestowed with the title “Sir”. Sir Derek died on 17th March, 2017 at his home in Cap Estate, Saint Lucia. He was accorded a state funeral. His grave is at Morne Fortune, above Castries, overlooking the Antillean land and sea that he loved. Saint Lucia is a small island (238 square miles) with a current population of around 190,000. After the Faroe Islands, we have the highest concentration in the world of Nobel laureates per capita. Busts of Lewis and Walcott stand in Derek Walcott Square in Castries. Check local press and social media for information on Nobel Laureate Festival events.

From Our Readers

HOW I CAME TO BE IN

SAINT LUCIA

Meet Cedric, the man from Blue Waters, who is working towards making the world a greener place.

C

edric Boussemaere was born in France where he qualified as an engineer. He is the Operations Manager at Blue Waters St. Lucia Ltd, the beverage bottling plant. He is passionate about the environment, conservation and sustainability. Cedric’s partner, Daniela Espinoza, is from Venezuela and is a cosmetologist. The two met in 2016 when they were both on business trips in Panama. They were instantly smitten and clocked up plenty of miles visiting each other, travelling between Venezuela and Mexico, where Cedric was then working. When he was offered a promotion even further away, in Haiti, Daniela made a decision: “I left almost everything to join him — work, house, car and family, but not my dogs!” Cedric has travelled extensively

“We feel very much at home in Saint Lucia,” says Cedric. “We don’t like big cities; we prefer the countryside, a natural environment

Cedric, his partner, Daniela, and his ten-year-old daughter, Lucianna enjoying some of the island's culture at a recent exhibition by local artist Peter Walcott

due to his profession, and his next posting, in March 2018, was to Saint Lucia. In their first weeks here the couple had great times experiencing the tourist attractions: the Pitons, volcano and mud baths at Soufriere, snorkeling at Anse Chastanet, and walking at Pigeon Island and at Cas en Bas. While waiting for their dogs in Haiti to be certified for travel, the couple, both animal lovers, adopted a puppy and a kitten through SLAPS (Saint Lucia Animal Protection Society). With their large four-legged family, they now spend more time chilling out at home. When Cedric’s ten-year-old daughter, Lucianna, visits from France during school holidays they like to take her for an ice cream at Elena’s and to the food vendors on the beach by Vigie Aiport “for the best fried fish, salad and rice”. They also like going to Elegance Cafe for its vegetarian cuisine. “I like to cook, says Daniela. “The fresh fish and produce that we buy in Castries market are excellent quality. I make my own pesto, salsa, marmalade, even chocolate cake with the local cocoa.” “We feel very much at home in Saint Lucia,” says Cedric. “We don’t like big cities; we prefer the countryside, a natural environment. We love how the island is relaxed and quiet, with lots of unspoilt nature, beautiful beaches and friendly people.” A herb and vegetable garden has been planted plus Cedric has plans to make their home as efficient as possible: they collect and use rainwater and he intends to install a windmill to generate electrical power for the fridge, lights and small appliances. The conservation theme even extends to the workplace: Cedric is happy to announce that Blue Waters has plans to recycle the material from the used plastic beverage bottles. The future is looking green!

Tropical Traveller would be delighted to hear from readers telling us how they ended up in beautiful Saint Lucia, whether to stay here long-term or passing through. Email the Editor at doretta.f@stluciastar.com

Shala Will Leave You Feeling

Nice, Nice,

Nice! Saltibus is the location of a hidden gem: Nicey Farms. It's as nature intended.

T RO P I CAL T R AVELLER • NOV/DEC/JAN 2018/19

Nicknamed "The Romping Shop” this offgrid shack was designed to be simple and efficient for sleeping, eating and meditating

O

n a recent glorious Sunday morning, I decided to visit my friend in Saltibus, at my driving pace about 90 minutes from Castries. I don’t know why, but not many tourists stop off at this largely farming community. What I do know is that whether you’re a permanent resident or simply taking a much deserved break from the rat race of the so-called real world, your body, mind and soul will love you beyond measure if you stay a while at the hidden village, inland from Gros Piton, in the south-west of the island. It’s where my friend Shala lives and does what she most enjoys. Although native to this country, my BFF had for several years been living the life of a socialite in New York and Europe, working as a fashion and art consultant and magazine editor, when she decided it was time to return to her roots. Since then she has been our most determined advocate of eco-tourism. She promotes, at her absolutely beautiful Nicey Farms, the traditional Saint Lucian lifestyle as it was before technology took over almost everything. Especially reminiscent of that time are her two cottages, tucked away in the rainforest. One she lives in, while the other is available on airbnb. On the recalled recent Sunday that I visited Shala, we decided to hike to the river. Once there, we cooked our meals on river stones and dried wood from fallen branches. We used a single pot containing chicken backs with vegetables foraged from the forest. This was our version of fast food as it’s a quick and simple way to gather all the nutrients, plus carrying just one pot made our load for the trek that much lighter. Many restaurants claim to serve farm to table but this is the real thing - life as the villagers live it; no gimmick. Our bowls were hollowed-out calabash shells while our forks and spoons were hewed from bamboo.

On the recalled recent Sunday that I visited Shala, we decided to hike to the river. Once there, we cooked our meals on river stones and dried wood from fallen branches Later in the afternoon we swam in the pristine cool river and frolicked under a waterfall, entertained by the unbelievable recollections of our Rasta guide Ilan, known to guests as Superman. (His tales suggested he really was from another planet.) I must’ve had more than my usual quota of Tequila, a fact that came home to me as we made our way back on foot to Shala’s hut. Then again, equally intoxicating was the stillness of the rainforest, its sheer beauty and the feeling that for a few hours I may actually have lived life as nature intended us to. I promise more on this place in future issues of Tropical Traveller. In the meantime, treat yourself to a day or night with my girl Shala at her Saltibus hideaway. I promise, when you leave, your soul will be feeling nice, nice, nice!

Scuba Steve’s

Dive Shop One thing that Scuba Steve's Dive Shop can boast is its superb location at Harmony Marina Suites in the heart of Rodney Bay.

O

n its own, the resort embodies the quaint yet natually luxurious charm for which Saint Lucia is famous, and Steve's Dive Shop is just a short walk down its halls. After completing the required paperwork, divers make their way to the boat docked outside the shop — convenient and ideal for the eager adventurer.

Choices of dive site Expect an enjoyable boatride with an attentive captain and dive masters who encourage you to sit where it’s safe — as it can get bumpy — yet ideal for breathtaking views of the island. After quick and simple training sessions in the boat and sea, new divers (along with the certified) would quickly realize that, just as colourful flora and fauna give that feeling of paradise on

yellow tail snapper, blue tangs, trumpet fish, flounders, scorpion fish, eels, clown fish, damsel fish, lobsters, crabs, octopus, sea horses and frog fish.

As well as diving . . . Divers are generally offered two dives. In between you'll be treated to true local hospitality in the form of complimentary fruits, snacks and lunch on board the boat. Local fishermen may even swim up at a rest point with samples of dry coconut. We also recommend kicking back and chatting with local dive masters and snorkel guides as nothing spells a good trip like quality time with locals. Spoiler alert: some of them were introduced to diving as young boys and girls when they'd dive into the sea gearless, with the older fisherfolk in their families. But nothing beats a firsthand account!

CARNIVAL SAILINg Bean to Bar Tour

Carnival Sailing promises an unforgettable experience as you combine a boat ride with . . . Choose from ziplining, buggy rides, spa days, sunsets and more. This award-winning company has been delivering fun and happiness aboard its catamarans for over 25 years so you can count on a great day out.

S

ome of us at Tropical Traveller have a sweet tooth so we decided to experience the Bean to Bar tour, especially as the chocolatemaking takes place at the luxury Hotel Chocolat. After sailing down the west coast to Soufriere, we took a bus up to the resort and spent the next few hours in chocolate heaven.

Hard work rewarded with lunch We put cocoa nibs, cocoa butter and sugar into a hot pestle and mortar and pounded and stirred for a very long time! This was accompanied by an interesting talk on the history of chocolate making and different types of chocolate and cocoa beans. When our mixture was silky smooth it was poured into a mould and left to set while we went to the resort’s Boucan restaurant for a gourmet lunch. Every dish was flavoured with a small amount of chocolate, right down to salad dressings. Delicious!

20

Yet more fun!

The afternoon was equally entertaining: a visit to the drive-in volcano and a mud bath at the sulphur springs. Back at Soufriere dock we commenced the return sail with a stop between the Pitons for swimming and snorkeling in crystal clear water. We saw plenty of fish! We were also impressed that the boat’s snorkeling gear was disinfected for each use.

Sunset and party time

After all this you might expect to be heading for home but no! The drinks came out with plenty of tasty finger food and great music. The party was on! We watched and photographed the sunset, called in at Marigot Bay and danced our way back to port. Carnival Sailing offers a wide choice of activities in different combinations. The catamarans are comfortable (with clean and efficient toilets) and the crew

are helpful and entertaining. Our advice is to do a tour early in your vacation - you will have such a fantastic time that you might well book another trip. Many tours are from 9am to 4pm, some a little shorter while a few continue until 7pm — a long day but well worth it. The catamarans leave from the Carnival office at Ganters Bay in Castries (next to Auberge Seraphine) but the cost includes transfers to and from your hotel. Also included are complimentary drinks on board, finger foods and/or lunch, entrance fees, knowledgeable crew and tour guides, a stop for swimming and snorkeling, use of snorkeling gear.

Safety first Before the journey began, it was time for a quick lesson and practice session with the fourwheeler. At first, operating the ATV seemed like a daunting task but, thanks to our guide Yendell, we were driving effortlessly in no time at all. We strapped on our helmets, stocked up on water, and hit the road.

And we’re off! The tour began with us passing through parts of the village of Fond St Jacques. After a few minutes we reached the off-road track — the entrance into the forest. As we made our way up, we got our first glimpse of Petit Piton, one of Saint Lucia’s twin peaks, the tip revealing itself in the distance from behind a mountain.

Reaching the waterfall At the top we came to a fork in the track. One turn leads to the Enbas Saut Waterfall while the other brings you to a picturesque view of Mount Gimie. Don’t worry, there’s no choosing one over the other as you get to do both!

22

Mount Gimie ATV Tours Let the motor do the work What better way to experience magnificent views of Saint Lucia’s tallest mountain, Mount Gimie, than by powering up an ATV and climbing the Enbas Saut rainforest? The over 4-hour thrilling adventure takes place in the southwestern community of Soufriere and includes a stop at a waterfall and a bird-watching session.

T RO P I CAL T R AVELLER • NOV/DEC/JAN 2018/19

Waterfall first. This was where the tour became more challenging and an adrenaline rush kicked in. En route to the waterfall the road becomes increasingly narrow and the ATV takes up its full width, with little to no wiggle room; on the right is forest terrain and on the left, a cliff. It required us to manoeuvre the vehicle with precision. Waiting for us after this task was a much welcome reward — the waterfall! Stopping to swim, relax and rehydrate, we wondered if we might spot the Amazona Versicolor parrot, the national bird of Saint Luica, but luck was not on our side that day. The chances of a sighting, Yendell explained are 50-50. Still, we did see and hear other birds.

Next, Mount Gimie

We retraced our route back to the fork and took the other turning. Thankfully, this track was more spacious so we had an easier ride. The viewpoint offers an incredible vista of the 3,145 ft. tall Mount Gimie. Of course, we lingered, taking in the beauty and capturing the moment with photographs. The drive back down through the forest was equally exciting. As we made our way back to Fond St. Jacques, we caught a final glimpse of Petit Piton as it again appeared in the distance. From there it was a peaceful drive through the community and back to base. What a great way to have experienced nature at its best.

Folk Tales

C

ompere Chien and Compere Chat were great friends. They shared a plot of land and decided to cultivate it. Now that plot of land was located far from where the friends lived so they had to carry food items in order to cook their meal. They brought with them, among other things, a large tin of butter. Cats love butter and Compere Chat was no exception. He made up his mind to eat up the entire tin of butter. When they arrived at the place, Compere Chat hung the tin high up in a tree out of Compere Chien’s reach. Now this tree was about one quarter mile from where they had to work on the land. Chien and Chat started working but they were very far from each other. Compere Chat shouted, “Ati!” then said more angrily, “Who is this person calling me?” He then called out to Compere Chien, “Hi Compere, some stupid person is calling me.” “Well go and see who it is,” Chien shouted back.

Compere Chat hurried away. After some time he came back licking his lips. “What did the person want?” Compere Chien asked. “Oh, he wanted me to give his child a name,” Chat responded. “What name did you give the child?” Chien wanted to know. “Half gone,” answered Chat with a smile. Compere Chat started to work again, there was no sound except the noise that the two friends made. After about one hour, Compere Chat shouted, “Ati,” then said

angrily, “Why don’t they leave me alone?” Chat shouted to Chien, “Hi Compere, some other person is calling me.” “Well go and see who it is,” Chien responded. Off ran Compere Chat. After about fifteen minutes he returned with that same smile. “What did the person want?” asked Chien. “Oh, another person wanted me to give his child a name.” “So what name did you give?” “Quarter full,” Chat responded. The two of them started working again. After about half an hour Compere Chat shouted again, “Ati,” this time sounding extremely angry. “Oh my,” he said stamping his feet, “Why can’t the person leave me alone?” Then he said to Chien, “Hi Compere, another fool just called me.” “Well go,” replied Compere Chien, hard at work. Compere Chat ran off and after ten minutes he returned, licking his lips. “What did the person want?” Chien asked. “Yet another person wanted me to give his child a name.” “So what name did you give?” “All gone,” Compere Chat replied. After working for some time, Compere Chien decided to stop work in order to cook lunch. When they arrived at the spot where the tin of butter was hanging, Compere Chien told Compere Chat to climb the tree in order to collect the tin. Compere Chat climbed the tree, reached for the tin and dropped it down. The lid came off and Compere Chien saw something which made him open his mouth in surprise. The tin was empty! Then a thought suddenly came to Chien, “So all the time Compere Chat was saying half full, quarter full and all gone, it was my butter he was christening.” He looked around for Compere Chat but by that time Chat was running as fast as he could through the woods. Chien started to run after him but he had to give up since he had lost sight of Chat. He was very angry. He made up his mind that he would take his revenge on Compere Chat any time he met him. This is why up to this day dogs and cats are enemies.

The cerulean blue background represents fidelity and reflects the colour of the sky and our surrounding waters. The gold is a sign of prosperity and a reminder of the sunshine. The black and white refer to the different races, unified. The three triangles in the centre symbolize the three pitons on the island. The isosceles triangle is similar to the shape of the famous twin Pitons at Soufrière; pointing skywards it stands for the hope and aspirations of the people.

Castries is the capital of Saint Lucia. This compact city offers duty free shopping opportunities at La Place Carenage and Pointe Seraphine, either side of the harbour. The walk between the two takes approximately 20 minutes, or you can take the ferry service. Near the waterfront are the two markets and in the city centre is Blue Coral Mall. The city’s oasis is Derek Walcott Square, named after the poet/playwright, one of two Saint Lucian Nobel laureates, the other being the economist Sir Arthur Lewis. Note the colonial-style architecture of the library. The cathedral features interesting stained glass. Serendipity Park near Pointe Seraphine is also a haven. The local airport serving smaller craft is at Vigie, just north of Castries and opposite a beach. Nearby are historical military ruins and a lighthouse. La Toc Battery, an old fort, is on the other side of town, on Morne Fortune. There is a museum at Government House, a beautiful Victorian edifice overlooking Castries. It is the residence of the Governor General, the representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who remains head of state. Saint Lucia gained independence on 22nd February, 1979 and is part of the British Commonwealth.

Village

Marigot Bay

Marigot Bay is, by far, one of Saint Lucia’s most picturesque attractions. American author James A. Michener argued that it is “the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean”. We certainly agree!

History This gorgeous spot on the west coast has previously been called Marigot Roseau, Port du Marigot and Marigot de Roseaux. The bay played an important role in our island’s rich history. In 1778, British and French armed forces battled over control of Saint Lucia. Admiral Samuel Barrington led the British against French admiral Count d’Estaing. The Brits successfully eluded their foes by bringing the fleet into the bay and covering the vessels with palm fronds; it was a successful disguise! The British would go on to regain control over the country which eventually changed hands between those two European nations fourteen times.

Places of interest The area is a hotspot for tourism with numerous bars

and restaurants, from the upmarket Marigot Bay Resort and Marina to the casual Cara’s Kitchen and Hassy’s Waterside Bar. En route to the beach are numerous viewpoints of the entire bay. One is Julietta’s, the open-air restaurant perched on a hillside, where you can grab a bite and take in the stunning scenery. The secluded beach is accessible by ferry (unless you’re up to the challenge of swimming to it!) and serves as the perfect getaway spot. There you can dine at the beachside restaurant DOOlittle’s, get handcrafted souvenirs or simply lie on a beach chair and bask in the sun while watching boats sail by. You can also venture out with Dive Fair Helen’s diving and snorkeling tours.

Interesting Fact

In 1967, scenes of the classic film Doctor Dolittle were filmed on the beach. Starring Rex Harrison in the lead role, many Saint Lucians found temporary employment playing the role of natives. Part of the shell of the giant pink snail is now on the wall of DOOlittle’s.

SPOILT FOR CHOICE

ICE CREAM Tapas On The Bay in Rodney Bay is a lovely waterside restaurant known particularly for its weekend brunch and the live entertainment that sometimes accompanies dinner. Superb home-made gelato in interesting flavours is available to eat in or take out. When we passed by recently the choices were Sea-salt Caramel, Vanilla Bean, Banana Dulce de Leche, Nutella, Strawberry Cheesecake and Cherry Chocolate Truffle. Irrestible!

STREET-CART VENDORS

Every time we see ‘The Ice Cream Man’ pushing his cart and ringing his bell, our minds are transported back to happy childhood days. The choices may be limited but service is always with a smile, in spite of the arduous work of steering the carts around the streets.

CREAM N’ BEAN

Cream n’ Bean is a cafe selling, as the name suggests, ice cream and coffee, plus some yummy cakes and milkshakes. The business is operated by Ferrands, a local manufacturer of dairy products that has been making ice cream since the 1960s. The company’s tubs of ice cream are available in local supermarkets but it’s a treat to visit the cafes outside JQ Mall in Rodney Bay and at S&S Plaza next to the highway in Bois d’Orange. The ice creams and sorbets are less expensive than at outlets selling traditional Italian gelato and regulars rave about the waffle cones!

Diabetics should check about the above-mentioned foods affecting their system.

Elena’s

Elena is Italian-born and makes her delicious gelato using a secret family recipe. She opened her first Saint Lucian ice cream parlour in 1999 and has a firm fan base of locals and regular visitors. Gelato and sorbet is available in cones and in various size cups. New flavours appear throughout the year but the favourites include: Truffle, Chocolate Chip, Pistachio, Vanilla, Chocolate, Coffee Crunch, Cream Caramel, Tiramisu, Mango sorbet, Passionfruit sorbet, Lemon sorbet, Strawberry and Soursop Elena’s gelato is available at Elena’s Cafe at IGY Rodney Bay Marina and at her outlets in Baywalk Mall, Rodney Bay and on Micoud Street, Castries.

7th HEAVEN

7th Heaven is the Swiss bakery/ patisserie at Harbor Club next to Rodney Bay Marina. It’s a bright, modern place for a coffee or for an ice-cream or sorbet made on the premises. Eat in at the cafe or at the outside tables on the resort’s Market Street.

On a hot day an ice cream, gelato or sorbet is a great refresher. Saint Lucia has some wonderful products made locally. Why not try a different flavour/venue each day?

POSITANO SANTA LUCIA

DINNER

AT HARBOR CLUB, CURIO COLLECTION BY HILTON

Fine dining hits the heights at Positano Santa Lucia — not only are the food, wines and service of the highest standard but the views from the sixth floor location, above Rodney Bay Marina, are simply stunning.

T

here is a beautiful story behind the restaurant’s name. Wes Hall, the owner of Harbor Club, took his wife to Positano in Italy to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. He was enamoured by the beauty and cuisine of the region, and captivated by the views from the mountainside of the sailboats on the Mediterranean Sea. It reminded him of the mountains and harbour in Saint Lucia so he vowed to recreate the experience of the Amalfi Coast — through Positano Santa Lucia.

Top Notch Italian Fare

Positano Santa Lucia will delight serious foodies and those looking to mark a special occasion in style. The menu is divided into: Antipasti di Stile; Di Grano, Di Riso; Dal Mare, Dalla Vale and Dulcis in Fundo. Imagine a dinner that starts with Smoked Caribbean Fish Trilogy with Mascarpone and Red Pepper Foam; then proceeds to Potato Gnocchi with Wild Mushrooms and a Veal Sweetbread Ragout; is followed by Angus Tenderloin Tagliata with Porcini Soufflé and finishes with Passionfruit Panna Cotta. Heaven! Only the finest ingredients are used. Organic produce is

25 Years Old and Still Going Strong

KWEYOL PHRASES The official language in Saint Lucia is English but many people like to lapse into our local Kweyol (Creole or Patois). Indeed, for some older citizens in the countryside, it is still their main language. Here are some phrases that you might find useful. We haven’t given the pronunciations as we urge you to ask a Saint Lucian and hear it from them. Good morning Good afternoon Good evening Goodbye

T

he appeal of Spinnakers never wanes. Located on Reduit Beach in Rodney Bay, it has wonderful views, great food, reasonable prices, friendly service and a laid-back atmosphere. It is one of TT’s favourite venues for a drink and a satisfying meal at any time of the day. The owners of Spinnakers are proud that many of their staff have been with them for years, some since the restaurant opened. It’s because they love their job and work hard at ensuring your visit leaves you sated and happy.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Spinnakers is open seven days a week and offers different menus according to the time of day. The breakfast fare ranges from eggs, done your way, with toast, through to full English. Local produce and style are emphasized on every menu — you can start the day with traditional Lucian saltfish and cucumber or moreish Caribbean style banana pancakes. The lunch menu incorporates soups, salads and sandwiches plus daily specials of fish and meat, depending on what the chef has sourced and prepared. Dinner at Spinnakers takes on a magical atmosphere, with hundreds of fairy lights casting a warm glow. The menu is comprehensive and playful — appetizers are classed as ‘Casting Off’ — and the extensive choice caters for vegetarians.

The price of most main courses includes your choice of potato, rice or vegetables of the day. Many entrees are served with a tasty sauce. One bite and you know instantly that it’s home-made. The same applies to the delicious desserts which promote local fruits and flavours.

Happy Hour

Spinnakers is as famous for its happy hour as its good food and superb location. From 5 to 6 pm alcoholic cocktails, wines by the glass and house spirits are ‘two for the price of one’. The cocktail menu has a

wide variety of amusingly named beverages, and sipping one of them while watching the sunset is a lovely way to bid farewell to the daylight.

Pleasing everybody

Spinnakers is comfortable for any age group and has high chairs for toddlers. And as well as listening to the waves lap the shore, catch a live music performance at the weekend.

Entertainment

DENNERY SEGMENT If you have never heard of the Dennery Segment, it’s a type of soca music, but with a stronger, infectious beat and, notably, some risqué lyrics.

D

ennery Segment is the name that was adopted for Lucian Kuduro. This style of music came out of Africa and has a strong drum beat. Throw in a Caribbean flavour plus some lively percussion and imaginative Lucian lyrics, and you have what is making our island world-famous on the music scene. It all started in the east coast village of Dennery, hence the name.

As artist Bigsea says, “We’re not promoting violence, we’re not promoting rape or stealing; we’re promoting men and women having fun. It’s all about dancing, moving your waist and feeling the vibe.” And let it not be forgotten that some of the older ones who now complain have likely done in their youth some traditional Lucian ‘up close’ provocative dancing with plenty of hip thrusting and grinding!

Song Titles Dennery Segment songs stir male and female hearts, and other body parts, to go where they’ve never been before — including splits that only the fittest of gymnasts would dare attempt! Some of the more famous song titles are: “Split in de Middle”, “Bad in Bum Bum”, “Force It Riddim” and “Bend Down” (more often termed Bend Dong).

Controversy Despite that some (usually older and more conservative) Saint Lucians would have the music of the Dennery Segment x-rated, others view it as an evolution of soca music, a re-interpretation by today’s youth. Think of the early careers of Elvis Presley, Little Richard and The Beatles.

US Tour Such is the international appeal of Dennery Segment that a group of artists has just completed a tour of the United States. Nassis, Krome, Keenan, Mac 11, Blackboy, Mata, Milgos, Seeno, Bigsea (pictured), Umpa, Subance, Mighty, Cooyah and Shemmy

J performed concerts in Texas, Atlanta, New York, Connecticut, Philadelphia, Boston and Miami. And so proud are we as a nation about the worldwide fan base of Dennery Segment that the artists received funding from the Government of Saint Lucia. Official endorsement!

As artist Bigsea says, “We’re not promoting violence, we’re not promoting rape or stealing; we’re promoting men and women having fun TT congratulates the Dennery Segment artists and urges every visitor to our island to sample their music. Check out YouTube, Tunecore, iTunes and Spotify.

NATIONAL DAY

Culture

40

Several dozen countries and dependent territories are named after people but Saint Lucia is the only sovereign state named after a woman: Saint Lucia. There are no accurate records about how this island came to be called Saint Lucia but early European explorers and settlers all used some variation of the name, based on recognition of Saint Lucia (also known as Lucy) of Syracuse, Italy. Her name shares a root with the Latin name for light — lux — and she is the patron saint of, amongst several fields, the blind. She is, naturally, also the patron saint of this island. St. Lucy’s day is celebrated on 13th December so Saint Lucia has adopted that date as its National Day, a declared public holiday. Celebrations focus on the pride that Saint Lucians feel for our country.

T RO P I CAL T R AVELLER • NOV/DEC/JAN 2018/19

FESTIVAL OF

LIGHTS AND RENEWAL The celebrations commence on the eve of St. Lucy’s Day with the Festival of Lights and Renewal. On the evening of 12th December there is a parade of lanterns in Castries. For weeks, citizens have worked on creating by hand their spectacular and imaginative lanterns which they bring on stage, to the delight of the audience. After the winners are announced the night continues with song, dance and other musical performances while stilt walkers and garishly dressed masqueraders entertain

onlookers. A fireworks display precedes the ‘lighting’ of the city: the switching on of strings of Christmas lights, particularly in Derek Walcott Square. The Festival of Lights and Renewal represents the triumph of light over dark, good over evil and the renewal of life. It used to mark the beginning of the Christmas season but nowadays, like the world over, many businesses and stores put up decorations and start broadcasting Christmas Carols long beforehand.

SAINT CECELIA’S DAY

Saint Cecelia is the patron saint of musicians. Her feast day is celebrated on 22nd November. Although not a public holiday, many communities around the island observe the day with concerts and musical performances for the benefit of locals and visitors alike. This being Saint Lucia, the entertainment would be incomplete without food, drink and dancing.

WHIMSY

In the UK a miniature Saint Cecilia appeared on the reverse side of the Sir Edward Elgar £20 banknote, which was withdrawn by the Bank of England in 2010. Saints Lucy and Cecelia are two of the seven female saints whose names are invoked in the Catholic Canon of the Mass.

ANCIENT MEETS

MODERN

The Saint Lucia Archeological and Historical Society (SLAHS) is using modern technology to help map the island’s past.

S

aint Lucia is an island with a rich history reaching back several thousand years. Precolonial Ameridians who lived here are commonly ascribed to one of two major groups: the earlier Arawak and the later Carib peoples. Materials from this era, ranging from stone and shell tools, ceramics, ceremonial and decorative objects to petroglyphs and more, indicate a rich, advanced and vibrant culture. Archeological research has been conducted in Saint Lucia since 1954 when SLAHS was founded. Much of it focused on individual sites but this year SLAHS, with the assistance of international archeologists, commenced an island-wide survey using photogrammetric models and GPS. The project goal was to document every known site on the island that contained petroglyphs and stone bowls left by prehistoric inhabitants.

a digital facsimile of the object or surface scanned, with an accuracy and precision at the sub-millimeter level which is a great benefit to preservation in case the original is lost, damaged, or destroyed. Because of the close likeness to the original, the 3D models can also be used by 3D printers as well as artisans to create high quality replicas that can be touched and used in museums to increase accessibility. Finally, 3D scans and models of archaeological sites can be used in new research methods. For example, the extrusion or enlargement of severely eroded surfaces represented in the model can make heavily worn petroglyphs and markings much easier to see and research; this can even lead to the discovery of markings that were originally not noticeable to the naked eye.

3D scanning technology The three-dimensional models which result from the use of photogrammetry and other 3D scanning technologies improve archaeological and historical study in several key areas. Firstly, the models can act as

Site surveys

The team documented nine sites, including 53 stones worked by prehistoric peoples containing a total of 17 geometric figures, 18 faces, five individual spirals, two ornamentations (similar to pottery decoration) and 70 stone bowls. In addition to the documentation of known sites, several new areas of interest as well as new patterns shared across various sites were identified. A common motif of two large human-like figures with a smaller one of the same style was recognized at four sites showing that this image was of some importance or potentially recognized across the island during the prehistoric period.

Of the nine sites visited containing stone carvings, one was not previously documented, meaning its inclusion in the project was an important step in beginning its preservation. In addition eight new potential archaeological sites were found. The project team and the SLAHS hope to reach out to more researchers and institutions to aid in continuing this important work. Some of the long- and short-term goals of this new effort include setting up a database of archaeological sites and artifacts for the entirety of the island, the creation of a more developed system for classifying Saint Lucian artifacts, the establishment of a museum for the island’s prehistory, writing books and pamphlets for the scientific and public spheres and, most importantly, generating a list of endangered and protected sites so that action may be taken to save any at risk of destruction.

aint Lucia is also a golfers’ haven. For a small island paradise, Saint Lucia has two unique champion golf courses which allows for golf aficionados to tee off any time of day. It’s no small wonder affluent retirees invest heavily in deluxe homes and condos too. Doing business in Saint Lucia is a great reason to frequent its warm shores. This accounts for the influx in real estate opportunities since the drop in prices to as low as 30%. Additionally, with great airlift from Europe, the UK, USA and Canada, travellers can easily visit, making investing in Saint Lucia a lot more enticing. Likewise, there are investments opportunities both in the north and south

of the island. In the north of the island, Rodney Bay is a true tourist centre with gated condominium waterfront properties and a bustling night life to intrigue you. New beachfront hotel developments have broken ground adding to the already diverse product on offer. Further north, Cap Estate provides more privacy in large stately homes, close to an 18hole championship golf course for golf lovers, large plots of virgin land on the mountainside with fabulous sea views of Martinique in the distance and Rodney Bay. The government has made a concerted effort to develop the south of the island. For instance, there are investment opportunities on the

southwest coast and southeast coast. The southwest coast has Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, which offers real estate opportunities with the sale of its luxurious villas. The new kid on the block, Choiseul’s Fairmont Hotel is slated to be built through Citizenship by Investment facilitation. Vieux Fort, on the south coast, is becoming a hotspot with more hotel investment on the horizon, a new international airport facility, a proposed race horsing track with Citizenship by Investment Programme component and a new state of the art cruise ship facility. Look no further. You have found your perfect winter escape in the island of Saint Lucia. We are waiting to welcome you to your home away from home.

PAWASOL POUR TI MAMAI CHARITY SHOP

ROTARY CALABASHERS

MOTOWN CONCERT

Saturday 8th December, 8pm

Pawasol Pour Ti Mamai is a registered charity that provides underprivileged children in Saint Lucia with the opportunity to reach their goals and enrich their lives. The organisation’s main focus is enabling children to attend school regularly and supporting them throughout their school lives. When possible, it also assists children with urgent or chronic medical needs which are often beyond the financial means of their families.

National Cultural Centre, Castries

Saint Lucians and visitors eagerly anticipate the annual December concert presented by the Rotary Calabashers. This year it is Motown-themed and not to be missed!

T

he Rotary Calabashers is a project of the Rotary Club of Saint Lucia. It was set up in 2004 when Past President Malcolm Charles penned a song to celebrate the upcoming centenary of Rotary International. His novel submission to the organisation resulted in the Calabashers, under the musical directorship of Barbara Cadet, performing at the Rotary International Convention in Chicago, Illinois in 2005 and impressing hundreds! Over the years the Calabashers have garnered a reputation for presenting a fun evening of song that will delight the family and lift everybody’s spirits. This year’s show, with longtime musical director Gregory Piper, is guaranteed to have audience members dancing in their seats and the aisles as they enjoy that Motown magic. Another reason to feel good is that the concert raises funds to assist the club in its services to the community.

Tickets

Tickets, priced at EC$80, can be purchased by contacting the Rotary Club of Saint Lucia: President Soraya Warner-Gustave, tel. (758) 484 9988, email: sajwg888@hotmail.com Secretary Julie Bonnett, tel 484 9382, email: juliebonnett67@gmail.com

Rotary Club Meetings

Visiting Rotarians are invited to join the island’s clubs for their meetings. The Rotary Club of Saint Lucia meets for lunch every Friday at 12.30 pm at Sandals Halcyon Resort. The Rotary Club of Gros Islet meets for lunch every Tuesday at 12.45 pm at Sandals Golf and Country Club, Cap Estate. The Rotary Satellite Club of Gros Islet meets in Vieux Fort every first and third Thursday of the month, at 5.30 pm, at Coconut Bay Resort.

Fund-raising activities have included quizzes and sponsored walks plus the publication of a cookbook, calendars and Christmas cards. An annual pop-up charity shop has been so successful that this summer the charity opened its own shop in the grounds near Coconutz in Rodney Bay. Items for sale have all been donated and include clothing, shoes, jewellery, accessories and household items at bargain prices. The shop is open every F ‪ riday from 10 a.m - 2 p.m‬ and every first Saturday of the month f‪ rom 6 a.m‬ - to 12 noon. The charity appreciates the support of donors and customers but also seeks volunteers to help in the shop. So, consider getting involved in some worthwhile community work while on vacation and, at the end of your holiday, lighten the load in your luggage and donate items you no longer need. If you'd like to find out more or become a member/ volunteer, email pawasolpourtimamai@gmail.com or check out the Facebook page.

News Bites

ANNIVERSARY MILESTONE

C

Cap Maison 10th Anniversary

ap Maison, the elegant boutique hotel in the far north of the island, opened in October 2008. From the start, it set the standards high with its accommodation and dining — The Cliff at Cap is a gastronomic French Caribbean mix while The Naked Fisherman, set on the beach, is more casual. Over the years, Cap Maison has garnered accolades and awards including from Condé Nast Johansens, Trip Advisor, USA Today and Travel +Lesiure World’s Best. It’s why it’s so popular with visitors and locals who appreciate comfort, style, good service and great views. As part of the milestone celebration, the resort has created four exclusive beverages that pay tribute to Cap Maison’s heritage, using local ingredients to give a real taste of Saint Lucia (see page 32). Happy anniversary Cap Maison, and cheers!

BODYHOLIDAY

Virtuoso “Best Wellness Program” in the world

Virtuoso is a worldwide network of the topline travel agencies. Its purpose: to connect travellers to the world’s best travel advisors. Saint Lucia has five Virtuoso partnered resorts: near Soufriere there are Jade Mountain Resort, Ladera Resort and Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort; in Cap Estate there are BodyHoliday and Cap Maison. This year saw the 30th Annual Virtuoso Travel Week Conference, held in Las Vegas. BodyHoliday received the award for Best Wellness Program out of all the luxury properties around the world in the Virtuoso portfolio. BodyHoliday recently reopened after extensive refurbishment. It is an all-inclusive resort but visitors can dine there and purchase day passes. For its guests, BodyHoliday is proud to proclaim, “Give us your body for a week and we’ll give you back your mind.”

Saint Lucia Crowned Caribbean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination

Not to our surprise, Saint Lucia won the award for ‘Caribbean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination’ at the 25th annual World Travel Awards. The award ceremony, which celebrates some of the finest travel brands in the Caribbean and North America, took place at Sandals Montego Bay, Jamaica on September 23, 2018. This is the ninth time in ten years that our beautiful island has won the award. The win also represents Saint Lucia’s fifth consecutive title as ‘Caribbean's Leading Honeymoon Destination’. Saint Lucia is also a nine-time winner of the ‘World Leading Honeymoon Destination’. “Romance has helped to establish the Saint Lucia brand and continues to be a significant niche market for the destination. This award is a result of the hard work of all our tourism stakeholders and truly is an award for the people of Saint Lucia,” stated Tiffany Howard, Chief Marketing Officer and acting CEO of the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority.
