WITH LOTS TO OFFER We at TT are immensely proud of Saint Lucia, and justifiably so. Wonderful climate, stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, Caribbean sea, friendly people . . . The list goes on. Here our Publisher, Editor and Advertising Executive reveal what stands out for them and how easy it is for you to have a slice of our lovely island life.
Y
es, even we who live and work on this magical island need to unwind. And where do we islanders go to relax and escape? Soufriere, of course, and Crystals in particular. Owned and operated by the ultimate bohemian Monica Charles, this place is special and unique, to say the least. An afternoon with Monica (who loves champagne) is fun and full of laughter! The location is magical, deep into the rainforest. The air is fresh, the parrots fly and the Pitons sit majestically in front of you. This is a place where the spirit is lifted, where the mind wanders and the soul finds inner peace. It’s a hidden treasure off the beaten track. If you want to experience a piece of untouched Saint Lucia, then Crystals is a must visit, if only for a day! Do yourself a favour — go visit Monica, have brunch there and enjoy a slice of heaven! www.stluciacrystals.com

warm welcome to all, especially if you are a visitor to Saint Lucia. Those who are blessed to live here year-round know that we have the good fortune to be in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Our island is favoured with sun-kissed beaches, turquoise blue seas, lush rainforest and a variety of tropical flora and fauna. Besides exploring the best of nature, there are festivals and events to attend this season: for music lovers there is the Roots & Soul Festival 23rd-25th August (see page 10) and for culture vultures, the Arts and Heritage Festival 18th20th October. Throughout October there will be events islandwide in celebration of Creole Heritage Month. It all climaxes with Jounen Kwéyòl on Sunday 27th October (see page 32). Partake and enjoy!

I
enjoy showing off the beauty and wonder of Saint Lucia to anybody who will listen to me! I am so proud of my country! There are so many different and wonderful sights to see and places to explore. One of my favourite spots is the top of Gros Piton. I’ve climbed it 148 times! I’ve also climbed Petit Piton but only twice. Saint Lucia has pure air, pure water and pure food. I think that’s why the people are so awesome. This island is mystical, magical and spiritual; it draws you back. I was born in Castries but I’ve lived in St Croix in the US Virgin Islands and in Germany. I have travelled extensively around the Caribbean, the States and Europe but there’s no place like home. Saint Lucia is where my heart is. She will no doubt steal a piece of yours.

Q&A
TOuRIST TALK Tourists can’t get enough of Saint Lucia! Captivated by the beauty of our island, they just keep coming back. KARINE AND BÉRANGÈRE
MANDy AND BETH
Martinique and Paris
London
Karine loves to visit from Martinique, on the Capo Rosso boat, staying at the Italian Guest House between Gros Islet and Cas en Bas (this time the accommodation featured a jacuzzi!). Having previously brought her children, partner and friends, this vacation was with her Parisian cousin Bérangère.
Beth was born in Saint Lucia. She and her daughter love returning to the island.
TT: Lovely to see you again Karine! Karine: I’m happy to be back and to show Bebe my favourite places.
MARIE DuFFy
Australia Marie and her partner, Gary, have been regular visitors to Saint Lucia since they completed the ARC crossing in 2011. After being in Australia for a few years, the lure of our island proved irresistible and they came back.
TT: Welcome back Marie! Marie: It sure feels good to be back. Because we’ve been here before, a lot of people recognise us so we’ve had a very warm welcome. It makes us feel at home. TT: What did you miss most about Saint Lucia? Marie: I never forgot how friendly everybody is, and how beautiful the island is. Gary certainly missed his Piton beer! When we arrived, the first thing he did was order a bucket of them. TT: What changes have you noticed? Marie: The island seems smarter. I notice that Baywalk Mall has been spruced up.
TT: What have you done on this trip? Marie: We’ve bought a new catamaran! So, we’ve been sailing, and I’ve been soaking up the sunshine. Other than that, I’ve been catching up with my friends, locals and ex-pats. TT: Where do you like to dine out? Marie: My regular haunts; Razmataz restaurant is still top of my list. I’m glad that Jambe de Bois is going strong on Pigeon Island, and I’ve had lovely lunches at Matthews, Bay Gardens Beach Resort and Harbor Club. TT: How would you sum up Saint Lucia? Marie: It’s my kind of paradise!

TT: So, where have you been? Bérangère: We had a wonderful day in Soufriere. We went to Diamond Botanical Garden to see the waterfall and gardens and then relax in the mineral baths. We also had fun at the mud bath at the Sulphur Springs. Karine: Another day we took the bus to Marigot Bay and then the ferry across to Doolittle’s and the beach. We climbed the hill (there’s a nice nature trail) to Meditation Point and took in the wonderful view. TT: Did you shop in Castries? Karine: Yes. We bought fruit and spices in the market. Some of them I can’t find back home, like wax apples, and some products, such as vanilla essence, are purer than I can buy in Martinique. TT: Where did you dine out? Karine: We went back to Angel’s Delight in Gros Islet; her rotis are delicious! And on Friday night we had greattasting lambi at Duke’s Place before joining in the Gros Islet street party. TT: See you next year? Karine: Bien sûr!

TT: Welcome back ladies! Mandy: It’s great to be here. We love the island and it’s “home from home” now. Both my parents were born in Saint Lucia, and Mum and I like to visit every two years. TT: What have you done on this trip? Beth: We go to the beach almost daily — Laborie beach is nice and clean — and every week we go to the Sulphur Springs. They’ve been refurbished and are now even better. But the highlight of this visit has to be climbing Gros Piton. I intended to go half way but made it to the top! TT: Well done! Your reward? Mandy: We celebrated that achievement and my birthday with a delicious lunch at Harbor Club. TT: What local food and drinks do you enjoy? Mandy: We love the fresh seafood, caught that day; coconuts and the local juices. Beth: My favourite is five finger juice with moringa. It’s super healthy. TT: How would you sum up Saint Lucia? Mandy: It’s a total contrast to the rat race of London. I adore the tranquility and the breathtaking scenery. I came to recharge my batteries and get back in tune with nature. Mission accomplished!

Folk Tales
T
he Tortoise and the Hare, one of Aesop’s fables, pits two unequal opponents in a race. Here is our local version, as related by Jacintha Annius-Lee in her book Once Upon a Time in Saint Lucia. Once upon a time, Compere Chat and Compere Tortie challenged each other to see which of the two would be able to walk the faster in a given time. All the animals were invited to witness this race. Mongoose was elected time-keeper, Hummingbird, Crab and Snake were judges. In all races, the competitors have to place a bet so both Compere Chat and Compere Tortie bet a pound of meat. Hummingbird was given to hold the bet since birds of its kind do not eat meat. The route for the race was from Choiseul in the south of the island to Gros Islet in the north. Mongoose blew the whistle and the race began. Compere Chat ran off but when he got to Laborie, a nearby village, he curled up under a tree and fell asleep. He was aware that Compere Tortie was extremely slow and there was no way he could ever win the race. So, Compere Chat slept and even snored! When he awoke from his slumber, he cried out to find out how far behind Compere

Tortie was. He shouted, “Tortie oh! Tortie oh! I am in Laborie. Where are you?” Compere Tortie replied, “I am still in Choiseul.” On hearing this, Compere Chat did not bother to continue running. He joked and played with all the animals in Laborie before moving on. On reaching Vieux Fort he shouted again, “Tortie oh! Tortie oh! I am in Vieux Fort. Where are you?” Compere Tortie responded, “I am now in Piaye, a few miles from Choiseul. You know I am slow.” Compere Chat smiled and thought that Compere Tortie could never win so he stopped in Micoud and visited all his friends

and family. There was a christening party in progress so Compere Chat and his friends invited themselves and had a really good time. Compere Chat was overjoyed. He started boasting to his friends, “Compere Tortie will never win me now, so let me enjoy myself.” So, he drank and feasted and, as a result, got really drunk. His friends placed him in a nice, soft bed to sleep. He awoke with a very bad headache so he decided to rest a little longer. He eventually got out of the bed and went on his way. When he got to Dennery he shouted, “Tortie oh! Tortie oh! I am in Dennery village. Where are you?” There was no reply from Compere Tortie so he concluded that Tortie was so far behind that he could not hear him. Then it started to rain and, since Compere Chat did not like rain, he went under a cliff to shelter. He curled up in a corner, away from the rain, and felt so warm that he fell asleep. He slept for a whole day. When he woke up the rain had ceased so he decided to continue the race. He kept on calling Compere Tortie but received no response. He asked a group of animals sitting near the road whether they had seen Tortie. They told him that because of the heavy downpour, no animal had been able to move about. Compere Chat continued on his way and when he got to Castries he again tried to contact Compere Tortie. “Tortie oh! Tortie oh! I am now in Castries. Where are you? I am so near the meat I can smell it.” He was surprised when Tortie replied, “The smell you are taking is the smell of the meat which has been cooked. Chat, I am in Gros Islet. I have won the race!” Compere Chat was very angry. He blamed his family, his friends and even the rain for his loss but never himself. Compere Tortie had taken a position at the entrance of Gros Islet awaiting the arrival of Compere Chat. When Chat finally appeared looking very upset, Tortie smiled and said, “Compere, it is not the pretty thing which covers your body that counts, it is your endurance and determination.”

Wedding Bells
THE VACATION THAT BECAME A WEDDING Dara and Lily had already planned to wed in England in August. Taking a break from the preparations, they came on holiday to Saint Lucia, to the exceptionally beautiful Smugglers Nest villa. Enchanted by the magic of the island and of their surroundings, they decided to get married here instead of in London. Dara anD LiLy BarkhorDar 17th May, 2019 Smugglers Nest, Cap Estate

ara and Lily are sensible, professional people who would not normally act on impulse. They met ten years ago and, for their first date, he invited her to join him and a group of historians on a trip to Ely Cathedral. Lily was already smitten with the debonair Cambridge undergraduate: “I was so keen, I would have gone anywhere with him!” Not the type to rush, the couple concentrated on their careers and became engaged two years ago. Last year they started to plan their wedding: a small, private ceremony at a London registry office with a large reception the following day for 100 people. But then they came on vacation to Saint Lucia . . .
Marrying in Paradise Dara had been captivated by Smugglers Nest when researching holiday destinations. When the couple arrived, they fell in love with the villa and its
setting, with a gazebo overlooking the sea. Then Olga, the housekeeper, told them about a couple who had wed there. “I thought about us getting married in a poky, little room in a town hall compared to saying ‘I do’ in paradise,” said Lily, “so I phoned Margueritte of Tropical Villas to ask if it was possible to get married in less than a week.” The big news is that the couple did not inform anyone back home! They are keeping it a secret until the reception in August.
plane — but I ended up wearing it for the wedding,” said Dara, “and Lily wore a dress that I had bought her for the holiday.” As for the bouquet, Olga made it with flowers picked that morning from the garden. At the afternoon ceremony in the gazebo, Olga and Margueritte acted as witnesses. “It was wonderful!” admitted Lily. “No crowds, no fuss, just the two of us.” Mr and Mrs Barkhordar celebrated their nuptials with champagne and a cake baked by Lily herself! Then they had a small reception with their new Saint Lucian friends, sampling Caribbean cuisine and even a guacamole made with basil and coriander from the garden. Dara summed up their feelings: “We had been planning the big August reception for over six months so it was genuinely liberating and refreshing to put the wedding together in just a day, because you get decision fatigue and stressed out by all the minutiae. This way we have the best of both worlds: the private ceremony of our dreams and we get to enjoy a traditional celebration with family and friends back home too.” Tropical Traveller congratulates Dara and Lily on their marriage and commends their impulsive decision to “tie the knot” on our beautiful island.
Keeping it simple Lily and Dara wanted their day to be as simple and low-key as possible, with no fanfare, but they had a surprise in the morning: Olga’s grandson turned up with his trumpet band to serenade them! “He sang Can’t Help Falling in Love with You. I cried because it was my grandparents’ favourite song,” revealed Lily. The couple already had outfits suitable for the occasion: “I had a jacket — for on the

WOODSVIEW ESTATE Experience the beauty and harmony of nature at this privately-owned estate in Jacmel, not far from Marigot Bay and Anse La Raye on the island’s west coast. Recognized as a top spot for birdwatching, Woodsview Estate is also ideal for those with an interest in flora and fruits and the old-fashioned way of Lucian life. A warm welcome Your hosts at Woodsview Estate are Anthony and Marina Henry. They take great pride in showing you around their ten-acre, agroeco tourism site where they have spent years planting and nurturing shrubs and trees that now attract visitors — human and avian. As you follow the footpaths and see all manner of vegetation, Marina will fascinate you with explanations of some lesser known uses and benefits of Mother Nature’s creations, and even invite you to sample some of the bounteous offerings. Munch as you “march”!
Birdwatching The Estate is lush secondary forest located on a hillside with spectacular views. Bird life in the area is rich and diverse, and includes Saint Lucia’s six endemic species: parrot (Amazona Versicolor), pewee, oriole, warbler, white breasted thrasher and black finch. Early morning is the best time for birdwatching, when the Estate can be reached in less than an hour from the far north of the island and from Soufriere. Accommodation is available should you wish to “rise and shine” on the doorstep. Binoculars can be provided if you are without.
Creole cookery classes Cook your own Lucian lunch using organic vegetables and ground provisions from the Estate. Learn how to prepare and cook some of the island’s signature dishes: green fig and saltfish (our national dish), breadfruit with smoked herring, bouillon and one-pot fish broth. (One day’s notice is required). October is officially Creole month, when we Saint Lucians celebrate our heritage. The

highlight is Jounen Kwéyòl on Sunday 27th October. That day, Woodsview Estate will feature various activities and demonstrations such as how to make farine and coconut oil. You can also view a display of artefacts as used by previous generations. Top off the day with some delicious, traditional food and local juices made from freshlypicked fruits.
Private functions Are you looking for somewhere different to celebrate a special occasion? A spot where the eyes are treated to the sight of green hills and the blue Caribbean Sea while the ears are enchanted by bird song and the rustle of leaves in the breeze? Well, Woodsview Estate can cater for private functions. As well as a classic coal pot, the kitchen is equipped with a six-burner stove and oven plus an impressive gas-fired barbecue grill.
Access The final half-mile approach to Woodsview Estate is along an unpaved track which is difficult to negotiate if not in a 4x4 type vehicle. Anthony has one and will happily convey visitors on this stretch. Woodsview Estate at Bois D’Inde, Jacmel www.woodsviewestateslu.com Email: woodsviewestate758@gmail.com Tel. DIVEFEST There is a magical underwater world on Saint Lucia’s doorstep. September’s Divefest brings together dive enthusiasts of all levels to celebrate the beauty and bounty of the island’s 22 sites. As well as amazing experiences in the water, there are fun outings and adventures on land. How about combining the two with an underwater wedding? All are invited!
Lionfish Derby
Underwater Clean-up
Lionfish may be slow-moving and highly conspicuous but they have no known predators. Also, the female reproduces all year long, releasing approximately two million eggs a year! As a result, lionfish are invading our waters, to the detriment of other species. This derby is a diving/fishing expedition to redress the imbalance and help protect our biodiversity.
There is a lot of trash that ends up in the water. Not only can it cause pollution, but it can be a danger to marine mammals, fish, corals and vegetation. Local college and school students will be part of this underwater clean-up, showing their support for local environmental management.

RODNEy BAy Rodney Bay is the main tourist area with accommodation options, plenty of bars and restaurants, and a pulsating nightlife. The beautiful beach has chairs and parasols for rental, and watersports. Baywalk Mall and JQ Rodney Bay Mall offer shops, supermarkets, dining and Treasure Bay Casino. Vendors selling hand-crafted wares, fruits and local snacks can be found on the beach and at roadside stalls. IGY Rodney Bay Marina is the island’s main anchorage for sailors. The complex includes a boardwalk, bars, restaurants and shops. To the north is the town of Gros Islet, famous for its Friday night ‘jump-up’ street party. Pigeon Island, linked to the mainland by a man-made causeway, is accessible by road and water taxi. It has beaches, trails, stunning viewpoints, historical ruins, and a couple of bars/restaurants. Both the English and French stationed their military forces on the island - Saint Lucia changed hands between these countries’ rule 14 times. Pigeon Island is a 44-acre National Landmark administered by the Saint Lucia National Trust. There is an admission charge by day. An 18-hole golf course is located to the north, on Cap Estate.

Castries is the capital of Saint Lucia. This compact city offers duty-free shopping opportunities at La Place Carenage and Pointe Seraphine, either side of the harbour. The walk between the two takes approximately 20 minutes, or you can take the ferry service. Near the waterfront are the two markets and in the city centre is Blue Coral Mall. The city’s oasis is Derek Walcott Square, named after the poet/playwright, one of two Saint Lucian Nobel laureates, the other being the economist Sir Arthur Lewis. Note the colonial-style architecture of the library. The cathedral features interesting stained glass. Serenity Park near Pointe Seraphine is also a haven. The local airport serving smaller craft is at Vigie, just north of Castries and opposite a beach. Nearby are historical military ruins and a lighthouse. La Toc Battery, an old fort, is on the other side of town, on Morne Fortune. There is a museum at Government House, a beautiful Victorian edifice overlooking Castries. It is the residence of the Governor General, the representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who remains head of state. Saint Lucia gained independence on 22nd February, 1979 and is part of the British Commonwealth.

MATTHEWS ROOFTOP RESTAuRANT RODNEY BAY
For five years, Matthews has been pleasing locals and visitors with its great food, efficient service, friendly staff, reasonable prices and relaxed atmosphere. Located upstairs in Baywalk Mall, Rodney Bay, it has panoramic views and a constant cooling breeze. It’s an all-round winner!
A
t Matthews, there are a lot of regular patrons — a sure sign that the food and service are worth coming back for. It’s because management truly believes in customer service, by properly training the staff, to ensure that your lunch or dinner is so enjoyable that not only will you return, but you’ll recommend the venue to others.
The Cuisine The cuisine reflects international dining tastes with an emphasis on Caribbean and Creole dishes. This must be the only menu on-island that offers steak and ribs, fish and chips (in Piton beer batter!), moules marinière, Mexican fajitas, pasta and lasagne plus an enticing selection of local meals. Matthews is the perfect place to savour fresh catch of

the day, steamed red snapper, lambi and local seafood, jerk chicken, slow-cooked pepperpot, oxtail stew (it’s delicious!) and flavour-packed brown stew chicken. Bonus: the Caribbean/Creole dishes are all served with steamed vegetables and fried plantain plus a choice of rice, mac and cheese, fries, ground provisions or mashed potato. Similarly, burgers are served with crispy fries and coleslaw while the price of the rib-eye includes vegetables, a side and a sauce. No hidden charges here, although extra sides can be purchased. Matthews prides itself on using quality ingredients. For example, the beefburger is certified Angus beef and the jerk pork is a tenderloin cut. As much produce as possible is sourced locally. Vegetarians are not left out. Tempting choices include the

Jamming Pepper couscous dish, the Soca Stir Fry, a healthy Sunshine Salad and the vegan fritters and Coconut Curry. Then there is the mouthwatering dessert menu . . . All menus can be viewed online.
The Clientele Everybody is welcome at Matthews! It’s family-friendly and is open from lunchtime, right through the afternoon, and for dinner, seven days a week. Matthews also has the capacity and experience to cater for large functions and events.
For those with limited mobility, Matthews is accessible via elevators, one of which opens right by an entrance to the restaurant.

lOcAl TREATS
TROPICAL FRuIT OF SAINT LuCIA
Our beautiful island, with the warm weather and heavy rains, has the ideal climate for lush plants that provide indigenous fruit. Years ago the main crops produced were banana, sugar cane, cocoa and citrus fruit but there is now an abundance of diverse fruit throughout the island. These mouth-watering goodies will effortlessly satisfy your taste buds. One of the best parts is that some of these fruits, such as mango and papaya, can easily be picked from the tree when out on a walk. Whilst in Saint Lucia, let these local treats become a regular snack, especially due to the health benefits they carry.
Sugar Cane Due to its alkaline properties and high doses of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and manganese, sugar cane can help avert heart disease and some cancers. Potassium is good for the digestive system. Sugar cane reduces the bad cholesterol; the soluble fibre and natural sugars can help with weight loss. Sugar cane contains Alpha Hydroxy Acids which help keep the skin soft, clear and hydrated.
Mango
This delicious fruit does not grow year-round but it is high in fibre and loaded with vitamins A and C and antioxidants. It also contains folate, vitamin B6, iron and traces of calcium, zinc and vitamin E. Mangoes can aid digestion, heart and eye health, boost immunity and improve hair and skin.
Pineapple This tropical fruit, filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, is packed with vitamin C and manganese. The antioxidants in pineapples can reduce the risk of chronic diseases, diabetes and some cancers. Pineapple contains bromelain (a digestive enzyme) that breaks down proteins and has anti-inflammatory properties, which can ease the pain of arthritis.
Banana
Citrus Fruit Lemon and lime have numerous benefits due to the minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. They can aid digestion, improve skin, fight infections, aid weight loss, reduce inflammation and boost immunity. Cleanse your body daily by consuming a glass of warm lemon/lime water each morning on an empty stomach.
Bananas contain high amounts of vitamins and minerals. Vitamin B6 aids the production of red blood cells, metabolising macro-nutrients, excreting toxins from the liver and kidney, and maintaining a healthy nervous system. It is also beneficial during pregnancy as it helps the development of the baby. Vitamin C nourishes the immune system, cells and tissue, protecting them from damage as well as helping the body better absorb iron and produce collagen and serotonin. Manganese protects the skin and other cells against free radicals and helps form collagen. Potassium contributes to a healthy heart and controls blood pressure. Bananas are also beneficial in aiding digestion and gastrointestinal issues, as well as providing energy from natural sugars.

Culture
Food Jounen Kwéyòl is the one day in the year when the whole country reverts to traditional food. Staples include our national dish, greenfig and saltfish; a choice of red bean, pink bean or lentil bouillon; crab callalou; pigtail souse and stewed meats, all served with ground provisions. “Bakes” (similar to an English muffin, but fried) and cocoa tea can be found at any turn. The must-haves are traditional confections of guava cheese, tamarind balls, “tablet coco” and penny-a-piece (like gingerbread). Wash it all down with a freshly-made local juice or rum on the rocks.
JOuNEN KWÉyòL SuNDAy 27TH OCTOBER Jounen Kwéyòl (Creole Day), celebrated on the last Sunday of October, is when people gather in some of the most culturally rich villages on-island to celebrate Saint Lucia’s heritage and traditions. With music, dance, games, food, costumes and demonstrations of traditional skills, it’s a grander affair than it was in its first days. The Origin Bannzil Kwéyòl, an advocacy group for the creole language and traditions, was founded on 28th October, 1981 soon after Dominica and Saint Lucia gained independence, in 1978 and 1979 respectively. The date was designated as International Creole Day among “Creolephone” countries and was first celebrated in 1983. In Saint Lucia the focus was the importance of the Kwéyòl language, commemorated with a fifteen-hour radio show, a panel discussion in Laborie and a Kwéyòl assembly at Fond Assau Combined School. Nowadays, most people opt for something simpler and trendier, sporting a little madras somewhere on the outfit. Others wear African prints to reflect ancestral heritage
32
T RO P I CAL T R AVELLER • AU G / S E PT/O CT 2019
Dress Jounen Kwéyòl is a day for women to wear the formal “Wob Dwiyèt”, or our national dress which is essentially a white broderie anglaise blouse and underskirt, both edged with red ribbon, with an outer skirt of checked madras. Both the Wob Dwiyèt and national dress are worn when dancing the “quadrille”. Both dresses are complemented with a headpiece folded into peaks representing the woman’s marriage
status: one for single, two for married, three for divorced and four for “I accept everyone who tries!” For the men, the corresponding outfit is usually black trousers with a white shirt, while madras is used for a belt, tie, sash or waistcoat. Nowadays, most people opt for something simpler and trendier, sporting a little madras somewhere on the outfit. Others wear African prints to reflect ancestral heritage.
Fun So what happens on Jounen Kwéyòl apart from eating and dressing up? Well, the community events feature traditional and folk dancing, live bands with old-time instruments like the shak shak and local taboo, and traditional games that most times require nothing more than some stones, a ball or some sticks. Happy Jounen Kwéyòl!

IMAGINATION FEATuRING LEEE JOHN Imagination, feat. Leee John, has enjoyed success on both sides of the Atlantic so it’s no surprise that the band will be performing in this year’s Roots & Soul Festival, on Saturday 24th August at Pigeon Island National Landmark. TT caught up with Leee John when he was recently on-island, staying at Coco Palm Resort in Rodney Bay.
I
magination, feat. Leee John, debuted on the UK music scene in 1981 with the album Body Talk. The title track, with a smooth soul groove, was a hit, peaking at number 4 in the UK singles charts (older readers may even recall the performance on Top of the Pops). Two other tracks from the same album — In and Out of Love and Flashback — also reached the top 20. In the intervening years, lead vocalist Leee John has been busy in music and has branched out into production, film-making, mentoring and charity work. Recently he had a US dance hit: Krash All Nite Long, and he sings the theme song (Highway to Hell from the new Retropia album) for the TV series Streetriders, about bikers in Italy.
Saint Lucian Roots In almost four decades, not a single year has passed when this
34
indefatigable musician hasn’t toured and, when on stage, Leee is happy to proclaim his Saint Lucian heritage. Although born in Hackney, London, Leee’s family origins are in Micoud, on the island’s west coast. Both of his parents were born in Saint Lucia, his father in Babonneau and his mother in Castries. He’s proud of his mum: “She received an MBE [The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire] because since 1968 she’s been the Grand Secretary of the St Lucia Association of London, just recently stepping down.” As for the local food: “When I was in London, I used to hate yams and sweet potato but I love them here, especially done the traditional way, on a little coal stove, like my grandmère used to prepare. And the people: “Everbody’s so laid back. I come from a bpm [beats per minute] of 1,000 but, when I’m here, it’s 10! It’s really cool to come here!”
T RO P I CAL T R AVELLER • AU G / S E PT/O CT 2019
Leee is in the final stages of producing a film, Flashback. It’s about the development of black music in the UK; a social, political and musical journey from early last century to our present day multicultural society. Coinciding with this documentary, he has some upcoming music projects, including a ‘world’ album with artists from around the globe. Leee cares about young people: “I’m involved with various children’s charities including Voyage Youth, based in London, helping underprivileged youths with their education and life skills. I’ve involved young kids on the editing side of the film; I lead them and encourage them, feeding them the technical knowledge. I even learn things from them!
Roots & Soul Festival For the Roots & Soul Festival, the music of Imagination, feat. Leee John, will encompass reggae and soul, with a touch of soca and calypso. Accompanying musicians for the show include drummer Mel Gaynor (formerly of Simple Minds), keyboard player Mike Timothy (former musical director for Massive Attack) and Saint Lucian soca artiste, Arthur Alain. It’s going to be phenomenal!
LEEE JOHN DOES A LOT OF INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL. HE NEVER LEAVES HOME WITHOuT: “My computer, iPods, Bose speaker, a bag full of tech gizmos, and moringa — I take it daily; it’s great for the mind, liver, kidneys, blood circulation and balance, and it gives me energy.”
Follow Leee John on Facebook and Twitter. For more information, visit: leeejohn.com For details of the new album, see www.retropia.co To learn more about the film, go to www.flashbackprojectuk.com

THE LANDINGS RESIDENCES The Landings Resort and Spa, located close to Pigeon Island, is elegant and stylish. With luxuriously appointed apartments, a choice of restaurants and bars, sports facilities, spa and a private marina, it is the ideal place to purchase property.
Accommodation
Reasons to Invest The Landings is essentially a lifestyle investment, and has been since its conception a decade ago. Now is the perfect time to invest in this unique development. It's on the beach, it has its own marina, it has all the facilities of a hotel and it’s freehold, which no other development can offer. A few recently-built new homes are still available, otherwise there are a number of resales that represent extremely good value. It is entirely your choice as to whether the accommodation will be for solely for personal use or entered into the rental
36
pool. Over the past two years, returns from the rental pool have been strong, covering not just the running costs, but producing a surplus; and this year’s budgeted returns are looking even stronger. A major benefit of utilising the rental pool is that you need not worry about security, maintenance, gardening, etc. This is all looked after under the rental pool agreement, along with breakages, repairs or replacement. Also, a full refurbishment of your apartment, even down to the paintwork, is undertaken every few years.
T ro Pi CaL Tr aVELLE r • AU G / S E PT/O CT 2019
All of the apartments are spacious and air-conditioned with high-end appliances and furnishings. The units range from one to three bedrooms and have a kitchen, dining area, living room, en suite marble bathroom(s) and expansive balcony. Some incorporate a private plunge pool; all have an amazing view of either the beach and ocean or the private marina.
Amenities The resort boasts plenty of ways to fill your day. Swim in the sea or soak in one of four pools dotted amid the landscaped gardens. On the pristine beach you can relax on the loungers, play giant Jenga and other games or go windsurfing, kayaking and sailing. Keep that body toned at
the fitness centre which is equipped with state-of-theart machines. There are two floodlit tennis courts on site while an 18-hole golf course is just a five-minute drive away. The luxury spa has eight treatment rooms and a wide range of services, plus a hydro pool and a hair and beauty salon. Tropical Traveller’s idea of a good morning: place the children in the resort’s Kids’ Club, have a facial and a pedicure, pop into The Boutique for a spot of retail therapy then have a glass of champagne and lunch at the Beach Club. SAINT LUCIAN WINS COMMONWEALTH AWARD
VISITOR SENDS HORSE TACK FROM SEATTLE In the last issue of TT, Marcy Kubbs from Seattle, USA featured on the Visitors page. The highlight of her trip was horse riding at Cas en Bas, especially taking the horse in the ocean. Back home, Marcy volunteers at a horse rescue centre so she was interested in the challenges faced by Kirley Trim who runs K & A Ranch Plus, the stables where she booked her trip. In particular, she learned how the climate here affects the
leather horse tack, causing it to rot and disintegrate. Determined to help, Marcy returned home and sourced nylon webbing stirrup straps, rope halters, saddle girths and bridles. Fortunately, one of her friends was visiting the island and was able to transport the tack to Saint Lucia, much to Kirley’s (and the horses’) delight. K & A Ranch Plus Tel. S
aint Lucian ecoentrepreneur Wayne Neale has received the prestigious Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Innovation for Sustainable Development Award – handed to him by Prince Harry at a London garden party in June. Neale is the founder and Managing Director of Greening the Caribbean (GtC), Saint Lucia’s only waste management and recycling firm. He hopes the international recognition and the £2,000 prize money will help the company expand. At present GtC
38
recovers more than 200,000 kilos from landfill in a single year. Reusable material, such as e-waste, cans, bottles and newspapers, is processed at GtC’s Materials Recovery Centre and then exported off the island. Neale is keen to create more “green collar” jobs, and make those jobs more valued, saying: “There is a stigma associated with dealing with waste. People may look down on us when we’re doing a garbage run but there’s more to it than they realise. We are not in the garbage business or the scrap
business; we are in the environmental business.” GtC has a busy schedule this year with projects in the pipeline including a French-funded initiative to transport plastic bottle waste from Saint Lucia to a recycling plant in Martinique, and the ongoing sustainable lifestyle project at Marchand Combined School which is providing filtered water stations and reusable receptacles to students. Neale summed up the situation in Saint Lucia: “We still have such a long way to go but the bottom line is that there is movement.”

SLAPS PRESIDENT RECEIVES BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL In other animal news, the hard work and dedication of Pamela Devaux has been recognized by Queen Elizabeth II. Pam is the president of the Saint Lucia Animal Protection Society, fondly known on the island as SLAPS, and she has spent decades rescuing and helping
animals, particularly dogs and cats. In the Queen’s 2019 Birthday Honours, announced in June, Pam received the British Empire Medal for services to charity. Congratulations Pam! Saint Lucia Animal Protection Society Tel: (758) 457 7277 www.stluciaanimals.org Facebook: Slaps St. Lucia
