Team TT SmaLL ISLanD

WITH LOTS TO OFFER We at TT are immensely proud of Saint Lucia, and justifiably so. Wonderful climate, stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, Caribbean sea, friendly people . . . The list goes on. Here our Publisher, Editor and a writer reveal what stands out for them and how easy it is for you to have a slice of our lovely island life.

I

t’s been ages since I had special reason to visit the fun town that is Gros Islet. Recent guests at the Airbnb here on the premises of Star Publishing persuaded me that the short trip would be well worth it. I was not disappointed! My old haunts were still doing a roaring trade and new bars and restaurants, like Rhumba, had opened up. Many play music that is a mix of reggae and soca; all offer a warm welcome. Gros Islet oozes quaintness but the food is always an attraction. It’s a mix of local dishes and the type of meals that Moms cook – prepared with love and meant to satisfy. Duke’s, just across the road from the sea, has been operating for years. It still serves the freshest grilled fish and lambi but, be warned, there is only one size portion, and it’s huge! The best part is that the prices, like most places in Gros Islet, won’t make a dent in your wallet. Pop in on a Friday night when the street party offers an experience altogether unique. See you there, fellow sybarites!

E

very month in Saint Lucia offers something special for visitors and locals alike. One of the highlights on the calendar is the Jazz Festival which attracts fans from all over the world. I love that on this little island you can find yourself enjoying the music of, say, a South American performer while rubbing shoulders with a Canadian, a European, even a Kiwi and, naturally, a lot of Lucians; and we’re all drawn together by the shared love of music. Read more about the Jazz Festival on page 10. The other big musical event over the summer is Carnival, but it’s way more than music — it’s colour, costumes, dancing, energy, excitement! It’s a true Caribbean party that every visitor should experience. Read about it on page 12. Whatever brings you to Saint Lucia, be it Jazz, Carnival, your wedding or simply a vacation, we wish you magical moments and lasting happiness!

henever I visit somewhere new in Saint Lucia I always think of how I would share it with TT’s readers. Even the excitement of being a newlywed doesn’t distract me! My husband and I honeymooned here (of course!) and we spent a few weeks in Soufriere discovering some hidden treasures of scenery and cuisine that I don’t understand how I’d missed before. From the rustic experience of Crystals Villas and an all-you-can-eat buffet at The Beacon, to the beautiful prayer sanctuary at Maranatha Gardens or standing between the Pitons on the Tet Paul Nature Trail, Soufriere always reminds me of why people keep coming back to visit. Moving to the north of the island, the cover photo (that’s me!) was shot in Gros Islet where hubby and I were both raised and where we began our life together. Gros Islet is famous for the Friday night street party but it’s also quite possibly the place in Saint Lucia with the most coconut vendors. Read more about them on page 31. To everybody visiting Saint Lucia, but especially other honeymooners, I wish you a wonderful, memorable vacation.

Q&a

TOuRIST TALK MArcy Kubbs

Seattle, USA We spotted Marcy sipping coffee at Rodney Bay Marina TT: Good day! What brings you to Saint Lucia? Marcy: I’m here with friends to celebrate my recent retirement!

NEIL & ANNEKE DEVINE

France We met this happy couple on top of Pigeon Island.

TT: Hello! What brings you to the island? Neil: We came to meet friends with a boat and we all agreed that Saint Lucia would be a great place to spend some time before we set sail around the islands. TT: What have you seen and done? Anneke: We spent the first few days relaxing at Coconut Bay in the south. We hired a car and explored Soufriere where we had lunch overlooking the Pitons. Then we visited the Diamond Botanical Gardens and waterfall. It was serene! TT: What do you think of Rodney Bay? Anneke: It’s a lively and friendly place, with so much on the doorstep. We are spoilt for choice with restaurants and bars.

TT: Which are your favourites? Neil: Razmataz is excellent for Indian food while the pizzas at Elena’s in the marina are really good. The Cockpit Bar at Harmony Suites is a truly welcoming and homely bar where we can catch up on footballing events on the big screen. TT: What local food and drinks have you tried? Neil: We’re consuming a lot of Piton beer, and local chicken stew is a staple core to our diet. The two make a perfect combination. TT: What will be your best memory of the island? Anneke: Undoubtedly the great people we are meeting. Hopefully we will stay in touch and return in the not too distant future. Share your pictures with us

TT: How are you doing that? Marcy: by being active! I have made three excursions: a nature hike where we learned about the fauna and flora of the island; a birding tour in castries Waterworks Forest reserve — the guide was very knowledgeable and I added new birds to my list; and a wonderful horseback ride to the ocean that included swimming with the horses! TT: Where are you staying? Marcy: bay Gardens Marina Haven resort. I like that it’s removed from the hustle and bustle of the mall area and that breakfast includes an array of local dishes to try. TT: Which restaurants do you recommend? Marcy: My friends and I had a superb dinner at Jacques Waterfront Dining. I also like La Mesa here in the marina; It has a central American influence, and the melted cheese appetizer is delicious! TT: What souvenirs will you take home? Marcy: chocolate and spices for making saint Lucian hot chocolate. I got instructions from the staff at the resort. They talked the cook into making some one morning for all the guests — yum! TT: What is your best memory of the island? Marcy: My lovely horse ride! I volunteer at a horse rescue in seattle so it was nice to meet someone and compare notes. Perhaps this was the real highlight of my trip — making friends with a person from another country, who lives thousands of miles away!

Carnival SaInT LuCIa

C

arnival was originally a cultural event held early in the year to commemorate the end of the Lenten season. Some islands still observe that tradition but, 20 years ago, the Saint Lucian Carnival was moved to June/July so that it did not clash with other carnivals, and with the aim of enticing more visitors to our island. Nowadays we have revellers joining us from all parts of the globe, many as on-lookers, and every year we are delighted to welcome a strong contingent from Martinique.

Carnival is one of the most important festivals on the Lucian calendar. It’s an intoxicating fusion of dance, creativity, colour, costumes and enticing, rhythmic beats. Open to all: young, mature, locals, tourists, it’s an unforgettable way to experience the Caribbean. Carnival Queen Pageant; Panorama (steel pan competition) and Calypso; Intercommercial House, Groovy and Power Soca Monarch competitions, and a Kiddies’ Carnival. It all leads up to the highly anticipated main parade: Carnival Monday and Tuesday!

Pageants, Processions and Competitions Related celebrations take place throughout the island for several weeks beforehand, and after, with competitions and community carnival processions. These include the

THE PARADE

The popular two-day parade of the bands features bejewelled carnival “jumpers” energetically “shaking their booty” along a two-mile route. The music is loud! The beat is strong! The dancing and gyrating (known locally as “whining”) are nonstop! Each band has participants wearing fantastical, themed costumes (there’s a lot of flesh on display!) and the atmosphere is infectious! This year Carnival will take place on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th July. Revellers will assemble near Massy Mega J in Choc Estate before dancing their way to the Castries Harbour. Take a cool box and set up camp on the side of the highway to watch the bands pass by. It’s a spectacle not to be missed!

Wedding Bells

A NOVEL WAy TO SPEND A DAy ASHORE Stephen and Joann came to Saint Lucia on a cruise ship. They were here for just a day but it was one they had spent months planning: their wedding ceremony. STEphEn And JoAnn ChAUvIn 26th February, 2019 Ruins at Pigeon Island National Landmark

S

tephen and Joann are from Rhode Island in the United States. They met 15 years ago through a mutual friend whom they had both known since childhood although, amazingly, they did not encounter each other until they were adult. Having done so, it didn’t take them long to realize that they were meant for each other. “When we first met we were so young and we had nothing,” says Stephen, who vowed to improve life for himself and Joann by doing well in his profession and by investing in real estate. The couple’s growing family enhanced their joy. First came a daughter, then twins and then their youngest son. As Joann reveals: “We never planned for it to take this long for us to get married. But it

gave me time to think about what we wanted and to organise my dream wedding.” Their success in investing enabled them to make that dream come true. Stephen and Joann come from large, loving families, and sixty-three people accompanied them on a cruise to the Caribbean for their wedding. Most of the guests were unaware that the couple had already married in a simple ceremony in the US, for the benefit of Joann’s grandmother who was not well enough to make the trip to Saint Lucia. They both agree, though, that the ‘big day’ was when they again said “I do” in the beautiful setting of the ruins on Pigeon Island, in the sunshine, and to the sounds of a live steel band. Coming ashore for just a day meant that time was tight, and procedures were not traditional: the bride and groom and their guests were

ferried to and from Pigeon Island in buses, and the reception took place back on the ship as it had to set sail. But none of this detracted from what Joann describes as “the most amazing day of my life”. Even Stephen admits that he became emotional at the sight of Joann in her gown and having their four children with them. Joann says that she fell in love with the scenery of Saint Lucia and that it was the perfect place for their dream wedding. At TT, we can fully understand the sentiment, and we wish the couple and their children a future brimming with happiness and health. I-Tal

AT BODyHOLIDAy

Here at TT we are a mix of meat eaters and vegetarians but none of us could get our head around the idea of a tour that involved picking the produce for your own lunch, then preparing it yourself and finally sitting down to eat it. Well, the I-Tal experience at BodyHoliday caused us to swallow not only our vegetarian food, but our words. It was amazingly interesting and extraordinarily fun!

Pick and prep Damian and Ratoya, the Garden Supervisor, soon had us cutting beans, snipping leaves, picking ripe tomatoes and selecting fruits that had been kissed by the Saint Lucian sun. But that sun was hot so it was a relief to learn that the garden team had already harvested some of the ingredients for our lunch, and we could proceed to the kitchen area to assist with the prepping. Donning white aprons we pared, sliced and chatted. This was like helping Mom in the kitchen when we had been little — it was all fun and not at all like work, especially as the kitchen team did all the actual cooking.

Time for lunch Incredibly, the team served a five-course lunch that was a pleasure for the eyes, tongue and belly. With crisps and dips, salad, soup, an entree and a dessert, we were sated! The meal will vary depending on what is in season but, having experienced I-Tal, the one aspect that Tropical Traveller can happily confirm is that it will be satisfying for the palate and the brain. I-Tal at BodyHoliday Cap Estate www.thebodyholiday.com Tel. (758) 457 7800

As close to your food source as you’ll ever be! The organic garden at BodyHoliday is a marvel, with an amazing array of fruits, vegetables, beans, ground produce and herbs, many of which are served in the resort restaurants

16

T RO P I CAL T R AVELLER • MAY/JUN/JUL 2019

As we walked through the resort grounds and up to the organic garden, our guide Damian explained the idea behind I-Tal: obtaining essential nutrients from Mother Earth as directly as possible. The I-Tal experience is about eating fresh produce in the healthiest way while leaving the softest footprint on earth. The organic garden at BodyHoliday is a marvel, with an amazing array of fruits, vegetables, beans, ground produce and herbs, many of which are served in the resort restaurants. Every plant and tree is tended with care and respect — crops are rotated so that the soil is not depleted of nutrients; the symbiosis of plants is taken into consideration so that they help each other, and wildlife, to thrive, and beneficial insects are encouraged.

DIVE SITES IN SAINT LuCIA

Fairyland Yes, the name says it all! It’s derived from the mass of corals and sponges that form a colourful and kaleidoscopic stage setting for the underwater performance; actors often include turtles. The wall is a great spot for drift diving. Depth: 12-60m. Lesleen M Wreck

Coral Gardens

18

Again, the clue is in the name! The site is located at the base of Gros Piton and is a favourite spot for diving and snorkeling with plenty of juvenile reef fish. Depth: 5-20m.

Anse Chastanet So-called because it’s in front of Anse Chastanet Resort, its proximity making it an ideal shore dive. Also good for snorkeling and night dives. Being a shallow reef with over 150 fish species, it lures photographers. Depth: 5-18m.

Superman’s Flight This site is at the base of Petit Piton, where scenes were filmed for the movie Superman II. And drift divers can imagine they are like Superman as the current flowing along the wall gently carries them past coral reefs and schools of fish. Suitable for all levels, this is one of TT’s favourite underwater spots.

Turtle Reef Yes, you are likely to see turtles — hawksbill and green varieties — in this crescent-shaped reef. Plenty of corals and sponges in the shallows (12m); advanced divers will enjoy the deeper areas.

T RO P I CAL T R AVELLER • MAY/JUN/JUL 2019

Keyhole Pinnacles If you can’t get enough of the Pitons, you’ll feel comforted at this dive site where four volcanic peaks rise up from the depths to almost break the surface. Decorated with black and orange gorgonian sea fans, the peaks attract trumpet and filefish as well as larger species like grouper and moray eels.

Lesleen M Wreck In 1986 this freighter was deliberately sunk to create an artificial reef. Decades on, it’s now a thriving colony with a nursery of angelfish. The interior of the wreck is accessible so there are great opportunities for photos: soldierfish in the engine room, lobsters in the hold . . .

Photos courtesy of Scuba Saint Lucia;. Map from Dive St. Lucia

Saint Lucia is just as beautiful underwater as she is on land. Caribbean waters are welcoming yearround with temperatures ranging from 26-29°C (79-85°) and visibility varying from 6 to 60 meters (20 to 200 feet). Many dive sites are suitable for novices while others will be appreciated by those more experienced. There are 22 world-class dive sites in our waters. Most are located in the Soufriere Marine Reserve, others off the northwest coast. Here are some in the south that we at TT like to explore

Castries is the capital of Saint lucia. This compact city offers duty free shopping opportunities at la place Carenage and pointe Seraphine, either side of the harbour. The walk between the two takes approximately 20 minutes, or you can take the ferry service. Near the waterfront are the two markets and in the city centre is Blue Coral Mall. The city’s oasis is derek Walcott Square, named after the poet/playwright, one of two Saint lucian nobel laureates, the other being the economist Sir Arthur lewis. note the colonial-style architecture of the library. The cathedral features interesting stained glass. serenity Park near Pointe seraphine is also a haven. The local airport serving smaller craft is at vigie, just north of Castries and opposite a beach. Nearby are historical military ruins and a lighthouse. La Toc Battery, an old fort, is on the other side of town, on Morne Fortune. There is a museum at Government House, a beautiful victorian edifice overlooking Castries. It is the residence of the Governor General, the representative of Her Majesty queen Elizabeth II who remains head of state. Saint lucia gained independence on 22nd February, 1979 and is part of the British Commonwealth.

WHAT TO Buy You have soaked up the atmosphere and want to take home a flavour of Saint Lucia that will remind you of all the good times. Here are TT’s suggestions.

JEWELLERY BY EFFY

Saint Lucia is not the only one celebrating its 40th birthday this year. The jewellery company EFFY is the same age! Since 1979, Effy Hematian has been designing some of the world’s most distinctive jewellery. As a professionally trained engineer, he has a passion for exquisite workmanship that is evident in each piece, and a vision that begins before he even starts etching. His lifelong muse is the panther, whose beauty and power inspires the bold designs synonymous with EFFY’s signature collection. EFFY has a magnificent range of collections, including Diamonds, Precious Gems, Garden Party, Seaside, Mens, even Kidz. The collection that we at TT adore is Watercolours — artistic designs vividly painted with brilliant sapphires, bringing colour into your life. Happy birthday EFFY!

FROM DAY ONE,I'VE BEEN OBSESSED WITH QUALITY & CRAFTMANSHIP

4OCEAN BRACELETS

These are the bracelets referenced by the sisters in Tourist Talk on page 6. The beads are made from recycled glass and the cord — which comes in different colours depending on the cause, eg orcas — from recycled water bottles. 4Ocean states that the purchase of each bracelet represents the removal of one pound of trash from the ocean and coastlines. Available from Sea Island Cotton Shop.

EFFY Pointe Seraphine, Castries Tel. (758) 452 3339 www.effyjewelry.com See advertisements on pages 3, 5 and inside back cover.

COCOA STICK

Were you intrigued by Marcy’s sampling of cocoa tea, as she describes in ‘Tourist Talk’ on page 6? It’s the traditional morning drink in Saint Lucia — a bit like hot chocolate — and it’s way better than anything that comes from a packet or a tin. We make ours by grating a stick of cocoa and boiling it up in water with cinnamon and vanilla. Add milk, and sugar if required, then strain and serve. As Marcy said, YUM! Available in supermarkets, at Hotel Chocolat and Fond Doux Resort, and at Sea Island Cotton Shop.

SuNHATS — SENSIBLE AND STyLISH

A sun hat is a necessity to protect your face and neck from the rays of the sun, but it’s also a flattering fashion accessory. And just like garments, it’s fun trying on hats to see which looks best on you. There are so many styles and colours available, you’re bound to find one that suits your face and tops off your look, be it at the Jazz Festival, Carnival, on the beach or simply walking around. Check out the range at Sea Island Cotton Shop and at resort boutiques.

RAZMATAZ

AUTHEnTIC IndIAn And nEpAlESE CUISInE In THE HEArT oF rodnEY BAY

Razmataz is 25 years old! It’s always been a firm favourite of residents and visitors, and with good reason – the top-notch food, the friendly staff and the inviting atmosphere. Owner Sue Wright has been at the helm of the business since it opened in 1994 and she is immensely proud that Chef Dipendra Bahadur KC has been with her from the start.

Dipendra with his wife Pabita, daughter Sabina and son Paras

The Cuisine Razmataz was the first ever Tandoori and curry house in Saint Lucia. The menu is traditional and authentic East Indian and Nepalese cuisine. Every dish is cooked individually using fresh, local vegetables, herbs, fish and seafood plus special imported spices and quality meat. The pride of the kitchen is a genuine Tandoori charcoal oven in which Chef Dipendra creates magic!

Meet the Chef When you dine at Razmataz, more than likely you will meet Chef Dipendra. Every evening, he makes the rounds to greet patrons and ensure that they are enjoying the meals he has conjured up for their delight. Chef Dipendra is from Nepal. That’s why the dishes he prepares are true to his

30

origins; he grew up with these intense flavours and cooking styles. For him, it’s a labour of love to spend his days in the meticulous preparation of ingredients, his reward being the satisfaction of diners and the accolade of reviews in publications including The New York Times and the UK Observer. Dipendra’s chief assistant in the kitchen is his wife, Pabita. She is also from Nepal although the couple are now both citizens of Saint Lucia, as are their 15-year-old son, Paras, and 11-year-old daughter, Sabina, both of whom were born here on the island. Dipendra used to visit his family in Nepal every year but in 2018 his parents, both in their seventies, made the long trek to see the country that their son now calls home. His mother’s reaction: “Saint Lucia is heaven!”

T RO P I CAL T R AVELLER • MAY/JUN/JUL 2019

Celebrity Choices Whenever there is an international cricket match played in Saint Lucia, the visiting teams always dine at Razmataz. Chef Dipendra recalled for TT some dishes that celebrity guests have ordered, often repeatedly:

Brian Lara Chicken Vindaloo Richard Branson Chicken Tikka Marsala Paul Simon Korma Roger Taylor (of Queen) Seafood Curry Sir Derek Walcott Lamb Cutlets and Sag Aloo.

These greats all had one thing in common — their appreciation of the excellent food and the agreeable ambiance that define Razmataz.

LOCAL TREATS

ROADSIDE JuICE VENDORS

When travelling along the island’s roads, you will often spot a roadside vendor under an umbrella or the shade of a tree. Stop and quench your thirst with a refreshing juice drink. No preservatives, it’s just as nature intended.

Coconut Water There’s been a recent coconut craze worldwide based on the nut (or more technically a fruit) offering a host of magical benefits. While it’s not proven that consuming coconut can cure terminal illnesses or change your hair colour, it is still surely a healthier option for a sweet-tasting beverage. Drinking coconut water from the backyard is typical in any Saint Lucian’s lifestyle. But getting through the shell requires a machete and an adequate amount of skill that thankfully scores of roadside vendors are willing to practice for about EC$2. The coconut water is also conveniently available readychilled in different sized bottles at a cost of $5-10. The vendors re-use plastic bottles so you might wish to take your own. Coconuts grow year-round and the true health benefits assure high levels in potassium, with few calories and little sodium. The great tasting coconut water (with different flavours depending on the colour of the nut) has an insignificant amount of sugar compared to sodas and other fruit drinks, so indulge!

Cane Juice Saint Lucia has a long history fermented with slavery and sugar cane plantations. Stone ruins are sprinkled all over the island marking where large sugar mills, belonging to French and British plantation owners, once stood. Today, the erstwhile thriving industry lives on in Roseau Valley where St. Lucia Distillers runs a world-renowned rum business, although it’s no longer produced from local sugar cane. Sugar cane, picked straight from the field, was one of our original snacks - juicy and an instant energy booster. Nowadays, we still like to munch on it but the preference is to buy the

extracted juice, to avoid getting the stringy bits stuck in your teeth! Winston’s roadside booth in Marisule (on the highway between Castries and Rodney Bay) is worth stopping at. Watch Winston insert the stalk into a press to squeeze out the juice. He’ll then bottle it so that you can enjoy the sweet, refreshing flavour of this local beverage. By-products of sugar cane are still used in Saint Lucia for ailments: molasses to strengthen the immune system or a good shot of rum to get mucus off your chest. As for the cane juice itself, it is said to regulate blood sugar and pressure levels and reduce stress.

Village

LABORIE Located in the southwest of the island, the fishing village of Laborie has much to offer!

Places of interest

Interesting Facts

The Rudy John Beach provides the perfect spot for relaxation; it will be the venue for a free jazz concert on Sunday 5th May (see page 10). If sun bathing isn’t for you, there are shaded picnic benches, or suit up and head snorkeling. While there, don’t miss out on the opportunity to visit the craft centre to grab a souvenir. Longing for yachting? The Laborie Bay can fill that void! However, the bay is not considered a port of entry, and a ‘permit to moor’ is required. Restaurants, bars, hardware stores and a gas station can be found in the village so there’s no need to worry about getting needs met. The village is also home to the monthly ‘Festen Labowi’ — a cultural, festive extravaganza.

Laborie has been the birthplace of many prominent Saint Lucians. The village produced the island’s longest-serving governor general, Dame Calliopa Pearlette Louisy. A former lecturer, she devoted

32

T RO P I CAL T R AVELLER • MAY/JUN/JUL 2019

over thirty years to the field of education before assuming the role of governor general from 1997-2018. She is the only woman to have served in this position in Saint Lucia. Also hailing from the community is author, journalist and the founder of this magazine’s publisher, STAR Publishing Co Ltd., Rick Wayne OBE. In the 70s and 80s Mr. Wayne pursued a successful career in bodybuilding; more than once he won the Mr. Universe title, as well as Mr. America, Mr. World and Mr. Europe! More recently, inventor Karlis Noel has continued to make the community proud. A former fisherman, Noel created a solar-powered, mobile desalination plant, which can produce up to 1,000 gallons of water per day. Facing scarcity of adequate water, the republic of Nauru took notice in 2018 and reached an agreement with Noel to have one built.

Top: Rick Wayne OBE in his bodybuilding days. Bottom: Dame Calliopa Pearlette Louisy, Saint Lucia's Governor General 1997-2018

Laborie Steel Pan The Laborie Steel Pan Project was founded in 2005 and seeks to develop musical and artistic talent in the community. The junior group is for players aged 4-14, while the senior group for those 11-22 years of age. The organisation has consistently performed at a high level at the annual national Panorama contest. In 2018 six members of the organisation teamed up with ‘Mangrove Steel Band’ based in the UK, winning the London Panorama competition and making the whole of Saint Lucia proud.

Currency

THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN DOLLAR RECEIVES A FACELIFT Grubby, worn and crumpled, paper banknotes will soon be a thing of the past in the Eastern Caribbean as the region welcomes new plastic-based currency

H

ere at TT we believe that the currency we use in Saint Lucia — the Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar — is the prettiest in the world! Brightly coloured, the images on our notes include tropical fish, a sea turtle and interesting natural features, buildings and people of the region. This summer, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) is introducing polymer dollars in a move to reduce counterfeiting and lessen the environmental footprint through cash that is more durable and user-friendly.

From Australia to the Eastern Caribbean In the late 1960s a counterfeiting ring poured hundreds of fake banknotes into circulation in Australia. The Bank of Australia launched a research project to create a new type of note that would deter future counterfeiters. The project took 20 years but was ultimately successful. The first polymer dollar was launched in 1988 and is now widely recognised as the most secure form of currency in the world. More than twenty countries have adopted the plastic-based notes including Canada, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Chile and Trinidad and Tobago.

34

Timing and looks The ECCB is adopting a staggered roll-out for its new notes with the EC$50 first to market in June. This will be followed by the EC$10, EC$20 and EC$100 in August and September. The final denomination, the EC$5, will make its appearance in early 2020. The polymer dollars will be used alongside and interchangeably with the current paper notes. Aside from the material, there are changes to the design of the notes themselves. While most banknotes are in landscape layout i.e. horizontal, the new currency is in portrait style. The EC$50 will have a portrait of former ECCB Governor Sir K Dwight Venner who set the record as the longest-serving central bank governor in the world. Saint Lucia will feature on the EC$100 with an image of the Pitons. All of the polymer notes will carry a new feature to assist the blind and visually impaired. Each

T RO P I CAL T R AVELLER • MAY/JUN/JUL 2019

note will have a set of raised bumps in the corner that form a shape, such as a circle, triangle or rectangle, that can be identified by touch.

Paper vs plastic The biggest reason for the switch to plastic is security. Counterfeiting in the Eastern Caribbean is not a big problem but, as technology advances and counterfeiting tools become more sophisticated, paper money is at risk. Forgeries don’t even have to be that good; with money changing hands so frequently, often balled up and pushed into a pocket, even the most vigilant person can be fooled. In 2016, a rash of fake EC$50 bills hit the streets in Saint Lucia, identified by a common serial number and the fact that the ink ran when wet. The following year, Grenada had its own security scare when counterfeit notes

were discovered. The ECCB is incorporating a holographic foil strip on the new EC$20, EC$50 and EC$100 to make them difficult to forge. The polymer notes are not just safer, they are also stronger. So-called paper notes are actually a cotton-based paper composite, making them more flexible and durable than ordinary paper. But polymer is even more durable. The polypropylene material is fully waterproof as well as being resistant to dirt, and difficult to tear. The upfront cost of production is higher but the new notes are expected to last three to five times longer than the paper ones. Polymer banknotes are more eco-friendly than paper. While plastic is generally considered a threat to the environment, polymer notes are the exception. When they reach the end of their lifespan, paper notes are shredded and sent to a landfill. When the ECCB’s new polymer notes are destroyed, they will be shredded and sent to a recycling facility where the material can be reused and repurposed. One initial downside is that new polymer notes can be slippery and stick together although this happens less as the notes become more worn. Direct heat will melt the notes so they shouldn’t be exposed to high temperatures (although they should survive the Caribbean sun!) We won’t be saying goodbye to paper payments just yet. The ECCB estimates that paper notes will remain in circulation for at least the next five years until stocks are depleted.

FOND DOux

PLANTATION & RESORT AUTHEnTIC, nATUrAl, ST. lUCIA

A wide range of fresh fruit, vegetables, ground provisions and spices is grown at Fond Doux and served to guests, with the Bamboo Restaurant offering a “plantation to plate” Creole experience. The resort works with local suppliers including artists, entertainers and craftspeople. The gift shop is stocked with goods that are locally made. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are hired from local communities, and Fond Doux makes charitable donations to neighbourhood schools and organisations.

a central theme at Fond Doux before it became an international trend. In addition to farming organically and engaging in true eco-building practices, the conservation of energy and water is standard, and the general policy is to reduce, reuse and recycle waste. Singleuse plastics have been banned from the site. In recognition of these efforts, the resort is Green Globe certified. Fond Doux has come a long way on its road to being an ecoluxury resort but it has always been true to its humble beginnings.

Fond Doux Plantation & Resort in Soufriere has been lovingly restored and respectfully expanded by its Saint Lucian owners. An eco-luxury resort that is best known for its romantic cottages, it has garnered a plethora of awards. The history In the 19th century, Fond Doux Estate was a plantation growing a range of crops including coffee, sugarcane, cocoa, cotton, nutmeg and bananas, but the golden years of agriculture did not last and the estate declined and was eventually abandoned. It was rescued by the present owners, Eroline and Lyton Lamontagne, who share a deep-rooted passion for, and pride in, their roots and Saint Lucian culture. They vowed to return the plantation to glory and commenced the arduous task of restoration, developing the grounds organically and replanting fruit trees and plants. Over the years they renovated the main building, added cottages, two on-site restaurants, swimming pools, a gym, organic spa, gift shop, chocolate shop and wedding

36

gazebo. Now Fond Doux is a pocket of paradise!

The cottages The fifteen unique cottages are preserving the island’s architectural heritage. Originally located elsewhere, and with structures often neglected, they were carefully dismantled and brought to Fond Doux where they were reassembled, ensuring that the buildings work in harmony with nature. Considerations such as aligning windows and balconies with the rising and setting of the sun, and with wind direction, not only optimize guest enjoyment, but reduce the need for lighting and air conditioning. Even though the accommodations are slices of history, guests will be delighted with the quality amenities and the furniture, all of which has been made by local craftspeople.

TOURISTS “AMBUSHED” FOR CHARITY

THE DuKE OF CORNWALL VISITS SAINT LuCIA

P

rince Charles first set foot in Saint Lucia in 1989 during celebrations to mark the island’s tenth anniversary of Independence. In 2008 he returned with his wife, Camilla, and during the visit they toured the eco-friendly Fond Doux Plantation & Resort (see page 36). This year, on 17th March, the Prince made his third trip here, to Vieux Fort in the south, firstly for a parade and then a reception at Coconut Bay Resort. Although it was a

38

Sunday, uniformed schoolchildren from across the island filled the Philip Marcellin Grounds, along with members of the public and government dignitaries. The visit, part of a Caribbean tour, coincided with celebrations to mark our island's fortieth anniversary of Independence. During his address, the heir apparent to the British throne expressed his delight at being here. He referenced the Commonwealth, which is 70 years old in 2019, our Independence celebrations and achievements by

Saint Lucians. On a sombre note, His Royal Highness spoke of climate change, saying it “poses nothing short of an existential threat to this island, as it does to every part of this region”. The Duke of Cornwall’s closing remarks: "For my part, I can only pray that Saint Lucia and her people continue to thrive and to flourish, and that prosperity, security and wellbeing might be the inheritance of many generations of Saint Lucians to come. Thank you Ladies and Gentlemen and Happy Independence Day!”

Andrew Grainger and Annette Eicker came from Austin, Texas, USA to spend a week in Saint Lucia on a wellearned break. Once onisland, they happened to mention that they are professional musicians and teachers. An idea led to a phone call which led to Annette and Andrew performing a fundraising concert of classical music. Penny Barnard kindly opened her home at The Landings as the venue for the performance on Sunday 24th March. Admitted Andrew as he addressed the

audience, “We came on vacation not quite prepared to do a concert. Fortunately, Penny has a piano for me and a cello for Annette. We’re suffering a little from the humidity — we’re not used to playing in the Caribbean — but we’re happy to be here to do this to benefit the Saint Lucia School of Music.” The moral: even when on vacation, your professional skills may be called upon; and it’s even better when it helps the local community.
