SKID PLATES & KINGPIN PART OF COF THE NZTA HAS INTRODUCED A SIX-MONTHLY INSPECTION of king-pins and skidplates, much like the current fifth-wheel checks, by the NZTA at COF time. Updated late 2018, the inspections are designed to deal with an area not always easily inspected, looking at a number of potential issues, such as corrosion through water ingress through the trailer deck or poor design. Structural cracking will also be analysed, such as a component reaching its design life, or when expected stress levels have been exceeded. On the king pin side, inspections will look at missing, damaged or corroded king pin securing bolts, cracks in the skid plate or surrounding supporting structure, or corrosion of the skid plate. Operators and encouraged to assess their fleets and identify vehicles at risk, including higher risk vehicles such as monocoque semi-trailers such as refrigerated units and tankers. There may also be associated requests with excessively distorted parts to establish the cause, or fit an inspection hatch to assist in the ongoing visual inspection of king pin security, removal of debris or the presence of corrosion. Inspectors will also look for signs of pitting, deep grooves, cracks, convexity, concavity and squareness. For full details of the inspection guide and more information, see the eight-page NZTA Operator Statement of Skid Plate Inspection and Maintenance Form on the NZTA website.

McCURDY TO OPEN NTH TARANAKI TARANAKI’S MCCURDY TRUCKS IS POWERING ON WITH a new dealership progressing in North Taranaki. As part of an expansion and move from its current locations in New Plymouth, Hawera and Bell Block, the New Plymouth and Bell Block locations will move into the new combined site. Currently, both of those sites are pushed for yard space, workshop space and parts room but the new North Taranaki location will sort out those issues and allow more space for staff and products and to better serve customers. It also allows McCurdy to introduce some new equipment and technology to speed up processes. McCurdy’s South Taranaki dealership is operating as per normal business. See them at mccurdy.co.nz.

Explains Steve: “We chose the manual for this unit as there are still a lot of drivers who like the manual gearbox, but we are finding a shift towards the automated gearboxes now.

1

Five years ago the automated boxes were in their early days, and it was probably a 90/10 split in favour of manuals, when everybody was double-clutching… now it’s probably 60/40 with automateds taking over.” Given the massive amounts of construction and development in the Waikato, Steve chose to fit a tipper body to the Trakker, to appeal to as broad of a potential customer base as possible. “We team up with a few body builders

It has a 4mm hard floor, a dual-swing tail door and toolbox. You can put a trailer on it, as it has 50mm Ringfeder trailer gear, so it can take a big load with a GCM of 50 tonne - particularly as this Trakker tipper is

reasonably light at 11 tonne. The chassis alone, without the body, is just over 8.5 tonne. Plus it has super singles on the front – they’re just really good off-road.” Of course Steve being the professional salesman he is also mentioned: “it’s at a very sharp price”. manufacturers, if you want an eight-wheeler, they build a six-wheeler on the production line, and then send it away and convert it to an eight-wheeler, which is both slow and costly. Whereas the Arocs comes down the production line as an eight-wheeler right from the word go. So we went through all that work to get a truck down their production line which had a really low cab height and low chassis height, and a whole series of things which we achieved which took quite a while to do so. “The standard Arocs chassis is around 1050mm [high], and we wanted a target of 950mm - and we ended up getting 935mm! It was a big drop, because the truck wasn’t designed for that and doesn’t fit into that category in Europe. “It’s been an interesting process and we worked with Mercedes-Benz at reasonably high levels. delivery, and we look good!” The relatively compact size of the unit is also an advantage with ‘Jock’ being called in for a number of different jobs, including the recovery of a roller on the Devil’s Staircase in Queenstown, within the tight confines working on the roof of a four-storey Christchurch University building, or general construction work. “We were working for Ryman Health on one of their retirement homes out at Rangiora for about a month,” adds Ross, “and we’re now their preferred crane supplier, for two double-story retirement homes out there. “We can park virtually right next to a building,” adds Ross, “go up 25 metres, and across 20m. And there are no counterweight swings. “When the boom is configured parallel to the ground, I could park this crane on the halfway line of a rugby field and pick up a 500kg weight at the goal posts; that’s the reach of it,” he said. It’s also perfectly suited to more compact work, adds Ross: “There’s a reverse linkage system on the crane’s extension boom and flyjib system that can reach through low openings and work inside a building. The boom can even pass right through a building to operate on the other side.” He adds: “It’s versatile and easy

to operate, using a Palcom 7 remote control for all the operations. Initially based in Christchurch and working on construction sites, maintenance and repair work, ‘Jock’ has also handled the installation of new plant machinery with the potential to do everything from the repair of wind farm blades to recovery work. Size is one thing, but the ability to be mobile is another. “For a crane of this size and reach, it’s remarkably quick and efficient to set up,” explains Ross. “We had to do a recovery of a roller on the Devil’s Staircase, and we set up on the side of the road, and took up just one lane, without any major disruption to traffic flow, and no need for elaborate traffic management. It was just safe and efficient. And it can move around the country as work demands. “We’ve

Almost all the Chieftain trailers imported by MTC Equipment into NZ use hydraulic loading ramps, and made for carrying machinery (1&2). The company also manufactures a semi-trailer ejector trailer which pushes the load off, and offers an alternative to the conventional tipper (3). MTC has already sold one of these units into NZ. SDC Trailers is a complementing brand and product line-up for MTC, with 26 basic models in the range (4&5), including flat-decks and curtainsiders. Extendable trailers have proven the most popular so far, according to MTC’s James Murray. SDC was established in 1978 and is the UK and Ireland’s largest semi-trailer manufacturer, and has found a growing market in NZ.

And we also sell the Hardox 450 grade products.” Officially, there were 13 registrations of Chieftain in both the 2018 and 2017 NZ sales years, but that’s not all, adds James: “Of course there are a few more than that due to the agriculture trailers which don’t get registered.”

trailers including the ag units.” Chieftan also has a semi-trailer ejector trailer which pushes the load off, and we’ve sold one of those locally.” Based in Christchurch but selling nationwide, James says a little more than half his sales go to the North Island.
