Story: Dave McLeod

In many ways, garbage trucks and compactors are the backbone of any large, civilised country. Day in and day out, they toil away, removing waste and unwanted rubbish from commercial sites and homesteads alike. What’s that got to do with Palmerston North-based Robertson Isuzu? Well, quite a lot as it turns out.

“Because the other thing is, when you get them in from Japan as an import, you’re limited by the import axle ratings. so you could only probably get 2-2.5 tonne on an FRR truck.” His pitch was evidently successful. He chose to go with ShinMaywa mainly because they came across a lot more professional and believed they were by far the better product. It took Renner nearly two years to actually establish the agreement, according to him, ‘They’re very cautious of protecting their reputation’ and there was the inevitable due diligence to be completed. On top of this, it was the first time that it had ever been done outside of Japan. “So we actually purchased a couple of units. It was a little bit slow to start with, 2016

I got that off someone that was virtually doing the same thing as this place was before I got it. If it didn’t get a new owner in or new blood it would die. And four months ago got the one in Tauranga too. That one was different, it was a very good business, the owner was just ready to move on.” Broker may have begun with a staff of three but now the business employs forty (fifteen in Waitara, another fifteen in Tauranga and the final ten in Rotorua), and it’s this team that he feels has been one of the vital parts of his growth. “I was 23 when I started, jumped into the Truckbody&Trailer | 19

There is a lean towards new or production

“Here it’s about a 50/50 split, Rotorua it’s about 70-80% new because there’s a lot of bodybuilders and new truck sales and it’s pretty central with jobs coming in from Hamilton.” Their split between doing ‘standard’ solid-colour work and ‘custom’ seems to be evolving too as vehicle graphics technology get smarter. “Custom work is getting less and less because a lot of people are getting things done in vinyl nowadays. And that really helps me because we’re turning things over a lot quicker. We’re still doing a bit of stripe work on cabs but that slows down booth and turnover time. So we’re happy to paint a cab solid one colour and they can take it to get the signwriting done. It’s quicker for the customer too and we have some key partners in the signwriting area.”
