RAISING THE FLAT-DECK S TA K E S SWEDISH LOG TRAILER MANUFACTURER EXTE HAS RECENTLY expanded into the New Zealand market, via its local Australasian agent, Forest Centre, with its multi-use flat-deck drop-in stakes. Expanding the use of a flat deck, ExTe Quick Lock (QL) is available through most trailer manufacturers, via an Auckland warehouse, and currently being used by Renalls Masterton. Using lightweight aluminium stake uprights with a quicklocking/unlocking mechanism, this allows a simple step-on tool to release and remove them by hand in just seconds. Reinstallation of the QL stakes is simply a matter of dropping them back into place and they automatically click and lock in. Key tasks include the salvage of short log residue from harvesting operations to be chipped, whilst the stakes and flat deck configuration allow flexibility for carting different log lengths through to sawn timber packs, pallets, containers or machinery. Additionally, as the tarp is made to order, it can also be pre-manufactured and delivered to the truck/trailer builder for fitting during truck/trailer construction, ensuring integrity and the perfect fit right from day one. Currently manufactured and fitted at either Johnson & Couzins’ Christchurch or Auckland locations, expansion plans are already afoot and made easy by the fact there are less components in the Ezi Tarp system, and it’s far less complicated than the louvre systems, so the company is looking at regional locations in Wellington and Tauranga. Customer feedback has also been extremely positive, recalls Shane: “One company that took it on, the driver came back and was so enthused, that they ordered 50 more. Which leads in to the only potential problem we have being managing growth, but we’ve taken on extra staff.” Future development is already underway with a motorised system available in the near future, using European motors rather than those from the cheaper Chinese/Indonesian versions. With such a rich history of commercial and domestic products, Johnson & Couzins’ expansion into the transport industry is a calculated and clever one, and it’s also looking to introduce the same successful technology applied to curtain-siding and an expanding range of products. ROLLER UP Speed and convenience are great, but Razor’s Power Door also improves efficiency and the all-important health and safety.
Story: Dean Evans Photos: Trevor Woolston
O
PENING AND CLOSING A PANEL ROLLER DOOR ON a truck isn’t exactly a difficult operation, nor is it one that really demands a better solution. With the weighting and
springing done right, a new roller door on the back of a typical delivery truck will lift lightly and easily, and in just a few seconds. But the parameters for the ease of that happening aren’t always userfriendly or long-term. It’s assuming the operator has their hands totally free, it assumes the equipment is new and lubricated, not worn and free-gliding, and it doesn’t always consider any wear aspects that could contribute to difficult operation. Of course it also assumes the operator is in full perfect health, without any physical injuries or limitations. And significantly, there’s also the other key aspect of closing the door: from the need to climb or step up to reach the pull handle, the physical nature of reaching high and potential injuries as a result, either though back, arm, shoulder, or even lower body injuries from slipping, scraping, falling or worse. So it quickly becomes apparent, that the simple process of opening and closing a roller door can be a lot riskier than it first appears, particularly with modern health and safety standards imposed not just on the operator, but the business owner. That’s how this solution came about for Auckland’s Allied Liquor, and it was an unintended but very welcome addition to the fleet, says Distribution Manager Warwick Thomson. “We were having an Isuzu truck built in early 2017,” recalls Warwick, “and there was some discussion about looking at improving how the roller doors went up and down. We were approached by Boss Motorbodies, who does work for us, and they suggested this new idea. “One of the guys got in contact with me and explained the concept

and how it worked. They would fit it free of charge, and see how it would work in the field. So they did that to this Isuzu, and much to the delight of our drivers, it worked a treat.” The ease and speed of operation is just as good, if not a little better than the manual system, with a switch fitted to the back of the truck that allows the operator to raise or lower the door in less than 10 seconds, without any physical stress. Plus there’s also a remote that the driver can wear around his neck, so when exiting the cab, they press the button and the door is open by the time they reach the back. “It also means our guys don’t have to climb up to grab the door to close it, or put a piece of string on to pull it down,” adds Warwick. “It

Allied Liquor trucks. The kits consist of an electric motor, controller, battery and charger, wiring harness and hardware kit, with the key components either mounted out of harm’s way, or underneath on the chassis. “The motor is mounted up high, just above the roller door. The controller mounts underneath, and the button goes underneath the floor,” explains Maron. “It takes about 4-5 hours to fit,” he adds. “We jig everything up and we have all the patterns, so we’ve done all the dirty work. We’ve done around 10 so far this year, and we normally do around 20-30 a year. Plus there’s no limit to the size of the door… we’ve just done a 3m high garage door, no problem.” “Everything is tucked away, and nothing gets damaged” adds Warwick. “Sometimes we do kegs and if they’re not tied down properly they move around; even if they do become dislodged and move around, there’s no concerns about the internal parts of the Power Door being damaged as it’s all mounted away from damage and protected.” Warwick sums up his thoughts on the Razor Power Door quite simply: “We haven’t had any problems at all, and they’ve been great. We’ll certainly carry on using it, and for any future trucks we’ll definitely be putting them on.” A simple solution for a simple operation, just faster, safer and

This relationship is why Mascialino insists that Tates will remain the New Zealand distributor of V.Orlandi products, despite SAFHolland having its own lines of distribution in the country. “[Tates] has done a lot of development of the products and it has done very well improving the product in terms of safety and servicing and all the other features associated with our product,” says Mascialino. “I can see only positive results for the future; we can benefit off the structure of joining with a big company.” Beginning in 1994, Tates has been heavily involved in refining V.Orlandi couplings and fifth wheels for the New Zealand market.

TINY TIPPER Not every tipper has to be large, as Tauranga’s Tri-Dek Engineering proves with its range of ute and light-truck tipper trays.
T
HINK TIPPER, THINK BIG – BUT IT’S NOT ALWAYS the case. Tri-Dek Engineering in Tauranga manufactures these tipper trays for almost any modern ute, in a range of
configurations, colours and styles. With the huge popularity of ute accessories and personalisation, the tipper is another way of further customising and catering for a solution. “It’s for firewood and small loads,” explains Tri-Dek owner Gerald Machin. Along with health and safety issues, “people are getting old,” he adds, “and these tippers are getting more and more popular now because people are finding easier ways of doing things. Do you want to go to the dump and shovel all the lawn clippings? Or move all that firewood by hand? Or do you want to be the smart guy and flick a button and unload it all in seconds?” The tipper itself is compact but strong, with a lifting capacity of 1500kg, and able to tilt 45 degrees. Dimensionally can be tailored to suit, but is generally around the 2200mm x 1900mm size for an extra cab ute. Gerald explains the tipper: “Everyone wants to run something 20 | Truckbody&Trailer
different on their ute these days: if you’re a builder, you go to a dealer and ask for a flat deck, ladder racks, front nudge bar and toolboxes underneath; the dealer rings me and I spec it out for them.” Tippers aren’t a new thing for Tri-Dek, either. “We’ve done hundreds of tipper utes over the years. We’ve been going for 20 years, and when I first started, everyone was getting single cab utes, that’s all we built. Then the Jap imports starting coming in, and then everyone went to the ToyoAce with the 3m deck… then everyone started getting onto double-cab wellside – obviously we don’t get to work on them, but we still do a lot of double cab flat decks, because people want four seats to cart the family around but they still want the flat deck.” Tri-Dek manufactures trays and tippers for any ute, mostly from the local Tauranga dealers for Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Nissan. “We make a sub-frame that bolts on the chassis,” explains Gerald, “then we put the pivot point on, the two bars that mount the hydraulic unit in there, mount a powerpack and then it’s just a matter of wiring it up and putting some oil in. We don’t rely on jigs, we just build it for the brand; there are that many different models and they’re always changing. We’re doing one for a Nissan and a Toyota extra cab at the moment, and we’re doing a Ford Ranger, so it’s whenever they come in from the local dealers. It takes between a day and a week depending if it’s a new model – and we’ll soon have something for the Mercedes X-Class. “We do those utes, and we also do quite a few of the bee-keeper trucks, too, in that style. We do bull bars, service trucks, ladder bars
Double-cab utes are just one of Tri-Deks specialities, with slide out security trays, and even multi-chamber firewood tippers.

and bolt-on stuff. Light commercials are our specialty – we’re basically an engineering house. We do around 1-2 Isuzu N-Series a month… and last week we finished off three utes with tool boxes, including one with a pull-out tray for a mechanic from a large construction company, which is ideal for crowbars, shovels and spades and long stuff, while keeping it secure… we also do firewood trucks, with three two-cube sections – and it’s a tipper. So if someone wants two cubes, they just open the back and go – but if someone wants four cubes, or six, they open the second and third gates as well.” “Though we mainly trade with car dealers for new utes, we also deal with the public for both new and used utes,” says Gerald. “We’ve just done two Toyotas, one of them was for a digger driver’s deck, with two toolboxes, and a toolbox across the back for his shovels; whereas a drain-layer wants toolboxes either side, ladder racks, and two toolboxes, so people are getting more fussy, more particular about what they want. “We do a lot of galvanized work which gives extra durability – it’s not going to rust or chip which is great for vehicles that are used for work every day. We can also provide a colour match option so the deck matches the colour of the ute. “We also do certified towbars for trucks and motorhomes and A-frames for motorhomes.” From a tradie or firewood tipper to a bee-keeper, Tri-Dek responds to demand, surmises Gerald: “If you want it, we’ll build it!” Contact: Tri-Dek Engineering (07) 543 4900

IN FOR THE LONG HAUL Story: Dean Evans Photos: Dean Evans, Tomoana
Tomoana Warehousing and Transport is moving bridges, literally, with its new $1.7m Heavy Haul Mercedes-Benz and TRT modular trailer unit.
H
ASTINGS’ TOMOANA TRANSPORT HAS OPENED A new chapter in its expanding warehousing and transport story, with the addition of a Mercedes-Benz Actros 8x8
650hp heavy haul unit and TRT seven-line widening, modular trailer. Arriving in late 2017, the Actros tractor has been coupled with the TRT unit, which has three built-in modules and automatic or remote manual rear steering, via the rear pilot. It’s been so busy since moving steel girders and bridge beams for major projects including Huntly and Hamilton bypasses, Tomoana’s Stewart Taylor first had the opportunity to unveil and present the project to a gathering of customers and suppliers in March. “This is quite a step for us,” presented Taylor at the official launch, held within one of its food-grade warehouses. “This is our first heavy haul over-dimensional unit… the truck & trailer unit represents an investment of $1.7 million.” A key partner has been the reason for the expansion, explains Stewart: “Napier’s Eastbridge Ltd bridge building company is the primary reason that we got involved with this. Eastbridge manufactures fabricated steel structures and for over a decade Tomoana has been a transport partner with them, using conventional trucks, often over-dimensional, under permit… but the loads have become heavier and longer. 24 | Truckbody&Trailer
Top: Tomoana’s Stewart Taylor made the official announcement. Above: A modular TRT trailer allows a number of different configurations, on its 56 individual wheels. Above: More than 100 tonne, Tomoana’s new heavy haul Mercedes-Benz Actros unit is moving bridges, literally. Below: After a few months straight into work, Tomoana launched the unit at its Hastings’ warehousing facility in March.
‘We worked with them and helped them win the bid with NZTA for a lot of bridge builds throughout NZ, including Transmission Gully, Hamilton and Huntly bypasses, Puhoi to Warkworth amongst others; what we’ve seen with these bridge builds over the years is that the beams have gotten bigger, longer and heavier, where they no longer fit on a standard truck.” So Stewart and the Tomoana crew started working with project partners Trucks & Trailers, Mercedes-Benz, and TRT who helped spec the trailer. “We went to order something else,” recalls Stewart, “and fortunately TRT asked us a lot of questions about what we were going to cart, and they recommended something a little different and guided us into this trailer, which is far more appropriate. Built by TRT over six months, the seven rows of eight spaces each axle 2.4m apart, to spread the load. At 3.35m wide when closed, it can widen out to 4.88m for improved load support and stability. The 56 wheels on the trailer can steer independently, either automatically via sensors to follow the truck, or manually over-ridden to avoid specific obstacles or when the turns become tight. The suspension can also adjust up or down 800m in travel, to negotiate rough terrain, steep grades or to manoeuvre around obstacles, as well as aiding loading/unloading. The trailer is a modular design, allowing various configurations to match the load, so it can be split into two or three parts, enabling either three rows, five rows, or seven rows of eight tyres, to match the configuration to the payload. be carried, with gross loaded weight typically ranging around 130t, and loads up to 80t. Adds Stewart: “We’ve got this truck and this great customer, but to actually cart a big load from A to B is just the tip of the iceberg, with the huge amount of planning and permits involved. Typically every kilometre this truck does on a public road needs a permit, as it’s over 44t empty, and 3.35m wide (on a 3.2 limit), so it typically needs 2-3 pilots almost everywhere it goes – at minimum one pilot for width alone. Every NZTA managed highway needs a permit, and there are around 65 other road-controlling councils and authorities. In our team we’ve got to assess if we can access bridges and culverts, get around

Story: Robin Yates
Truck and trailer markets white hot, and no sign of a slowdown.
Patchell leads the way, ultimately, but in 2018 there are lots of players who are showing strong sales.
A BROKEN RECORD T
WO YEARS AGO THE EXPERTS WERE WARNING that the truck and trailer markets could not sustain the record-breaking rush that started in 2011. But
to most people’s surprise, with only minor pauses for breath, nearly every month sees a plethora of new records set. Buyers are still in bullish moods; take for instance April 2018’s truck sales, which often influence trailer sales. Official NZTA registration data shows that 372 new trucks 4.5t-max GVM were registered in April, 7.2 percent up on the previous best of 347 set last year. This took the YTD number to 1557, 6.3 percent ahead of last year’s record of 1465. Trailers are doing even better with 146 registered in April, bettering last year’s 124 sales by 17 percent, and even beating the previous best April month of 131, set in 2004 by over 11 percent. Year-to-date, the 530 registrations is a large 26 percent up on last year, and 12 percent more than the previous recordsetting 474 sales set in 2015. But that’s not all, with the GVM chart showing a healthy increase in the physical size of trailers being built. Every weight group increased in volume since last year, with the exception of 20-30t. The big mover was 30-40 tonne, which increased a massive 40 percent! Imports more than doubled from 13-30t with the UK and USA leading the charge, but local NZ producers increased their share by a greater amount. The area registration chart makes interesting reading with all but five regions increasing their share; Whangarei, Napier and Dunedin each lost a little share, but with Auckland crashing from 41 to 27 percent, and Wellington from 6.9 to 1.5 percent, there was plenty of space left for the regions. Every month in 2018 so far has seen a different manufacturer

new registration in April now list them as a manufacturer in their own right, and its recent advertisement shows it as Freighter by MaxiTRANS. Does this mean that MaxiTRANS will be similarly branding its other product lines? For example MaxiCUBE by MaxiTRANS, Hamilex White by MaxiTRANS and so on with Lusts, Maxus, EMS, AZMEB, Peki and Panel Master? By the next issue of Truckbody & Trailer in September, will MTE, Fruehauf, Roadmaster, or even Domett be able to rival the numbers of

Patchell? The fight for the top positions has not been as tight for years, in terms of volume and number of competitors.
or combination of manufacturers lead the monthly registration tables. In January, Patchell led with 20, followed by Fruehauf and MTE with nine each; in February, Domett and Roadmaster shared the lead with 13 apiece, with Patchell’s 11 placing it third. In March, Fruehauf’s 16 had the number one spot to themselves, followed by MTE (15) and TMC (13). In April, it was MTE’s turn with 17 registrations and a threeway tie for second with Patchell, Fruehauf and Roadmaster registering 16 each. So by dint of its long-term consistency, by the end of April Patchell had managed to extend its market-leading position for the ninth year. However as the year-on-year comparison chart shows, Patchell’s share has been seriously eroded with MTE, Fruehauf and Roadmaster all increasing their market share. Others to increase share were Fairfax, Chieftain, CWS, Makaranui, Mills-Tui, Adams & Currie, HTS and Koromiko. Domett , TMC, Maxicube, Transport Trailers, Jackson, Transfleet, TES, Evans, Kraft, Hammar, MTT, Cowan, Glasgow Engineering, TRT and White all lost share. It should be noted that while some of the above did actually sell more product in terms of volume, that volume was less than the increase in the size of the market. Some new names from last year include Trinity, Ceco, Douglas, MD Engineering, Manac, Teo and Freighter. Up until April 2018, Freighter models were registered under the MaxiCUBE brand, but Increase of share loss of share No change
