FAREWELL It is with a little sadness that this issue of Truckbody & Trailer will be my last. As editor for almost three years, the truck and trailer learning curve has often been steep, but it’s always been fascinating. I’ve met some great people and witnessed some fantastic technical innovation, and TBT will continue to power on with the enthusiastic family here, with its parent title Truck & Driver magazine, while I head back to mainstream motoring. So long and thanks for the great ride. Dean Evans

BIGFOOT FOR BIG SAVINGS BIGFOOT CENTRAL TYRE INFLATION SYSTEMS has put together an online Bigfoot Benefits & Payback Calculator. Based off numerous academic studies around the world and put together by Dr Glen Murphy, the Bigfoot BPC helps quantify and justify the return-on-investment of a Bigfoot CTI, allowing potential (and existing) customers to understand the benefits and calculate the ROI. The online calculator on the Bigfoot website asks a number of questions over four main steps, such as annual distance travelled, road conditions (rough, smooth), percentage of use a CTI is required, fuel cost and user consumption, number of axles, tyre cost and even number of blowouts or tyre call-outs/maintenance costs and outputs a benefit grade, a payback period and potential cost savings plus a breakdown. As a driver for 25 years, Russell Waters knows this all too well. His Christchurchbased Raw Haulage business has recently invested in a pair of Fruehauf B-train trailers that started working in June 2018, whose main job is to cart pallets of 20-litre plastic paint pales for Mainfreight.

Paint is such a bugger of a thing to cart; they’re palleted, but you can’t really stack them too well; you can’t really shrink wrap them that well either, and they move a lot while being transported. “We

You drive it back to Christchurch and get it fixed there rather than wait for the tyre guy. “Or, it might be sitting over the weekend, and you start the truck… green lights will come on for the front and back unit and it might pump air into the tyres, and you can hear the air flowing into the tyres while it’s inflating. LT Transport is reaching new places with its big Hino/Hiab 544 unit, the biggest crane truck the company has put on the road yet. The Hiab HiPro on this LT Transport unit is at the heavy duty end of the crane-maker’s range, with a 51 tm capacity, a 15.5m outreach, and up to 18.5m vertical reach.
Truckbody&Trailer | 25
LT Transport is still building up the roster of jobs for the Hino 700/Hiab 544. So far the truck is doing heavy-lifting, some container work and hauling concrete bunkers. “This morning, we had 13-metre steel pipes on it, weighing three to four tonne each,” says Callan. “We wouldn’t be able to do that without this crane and vehicle configuration.” The big crane also allows the company to unload heavy machinery from open-topped containers. But LT Transport has only scratched the surface of the new rig’s potential. The Hino/Hiab is taking the company into a whole new level. HIAB IN DETAIL Hiab HiPro is at the heavy duty end of the crane-maker’s range, with a 51 tm capacity. It has a 15.5 metre outreach, and up to 18.5 metres vertical reach. Hiab was originally a Swedish firm that developed and manufactured truck-mounted cranes from the mid-20th century; since 2005 it has been part of Finnish cargohandling giant, Cargotec. In New Zealand, Hamilton-based TRT took over Hiab distribution towards the end of 2018. In common with all Hiab cranes, the hexagonal boom 26 | Truckbody&Trailer

Continuous slewing improves the crane’s flexibility, and infinite rotation allows operators to work freely around the truck’s perimeter and always slew in a desired direction. HIAB’s controlled extension and retraction sequence means the extensions always move in the same order. Hiab says the controlled sequence means that the total weight is lower – an important factor on a long boom system. Full sequence cylinders provide smoothness and precision when the crane is working at long outreach. They’re designed to prevent the crane from making any unexpected movements during extension or retraction. The crane’s HiPro manoeuvring system includes electronic productivity functions that provide extra capacity and improve operating efficiency. Each function is designed to selfactivate smoothly. HiPro allows the crane to multi-task, one minute doing precision work, the next doing fast routine jobs. The HIAB has a VSL system that is designed to make working in confined spaces easier while retaining stability and high capacity. The function lets operators focus fully on driving the crane.
