“We wanted something that has been a tough daily performer,” says Doeg. “Long service did influence our thinking - our second place winner has been in action since the 1980s - but it wasn’t the only thing. We also wanted a truck that was well-maintained, as that is critical to keep a unit performing well.” “Finally, we wanted to be able to tell this truck’s story - the details that tell you what ‘tough’ looks like on a daily basis. Ross’ vehicle delivered all of this in spades.” Interest in the competition was very high, with entries received from all over New Zealand. “We’ve had such passionate engagement from the community - there were trucks sent in from Whanganui to Fairlie.

Fonterra tanker for Northland driver training DRIVER TRAINING IN NORTHLAND HAS BEEN BOOSTED BY Fonterra’s long-term loan of a decommissioned milk tanker to the region’s leading tertiary education provider NorthTec. NorthTec chief executive Mark Ewen says: “It isn’t always easy for us to have the right resources to deliver for all our stakeholders, but now we have a truck and trailer for the next three years. “It is a very generous investment in us – it’s an investment because we need to be producing more drivers from our region, and employing more drivers in our region. It’s an investment in us to deliver fully-trained drivers back to the industry for the next three years and beyond.” It’s the third truck and trailer tanker unit that Fonterra has loaned to tertiary education institutes. It will be used for training students doing their Class 4 and Class 5 truck licences with NorthTec. It can also be used for completing driver competency tests and assessments and other training opportunities like safety inspections, mechanical inspections and truck safety days. TB&T

REACH FOR THE SKY Story: Dean Evans

Swanson Transport solves long-reach problems, and built by OTEL, this 10-wheeler crane truck has all kinds of answers.

S

PECIALISED WORK NEEDS SPECIALISED EQUIPMENT AND FOR Auckland’s Swanson Transport, one of its niche specialities is lifting into and onto long reaches. With a reach of 32 metres, its 10-wheeler crane

truck is a clever piece of engineering work that’s been managing a range of often unique jobs, thanks to its partnership with OTEL (Onehunga Transport Engineering Ltd). “This is our second 10-wheeler,” recalls Swanson Transport General Manager Nick Longuet-Higgins. “The first one was built in 2007, and it gave us more range with what we could do, especially with the long reach stuff: all the housing where you can’t get a truck in, so the reach is further back.

Truckbody&Trailer | 11

Above: Some of the various uses and projects the crane trucks have been used for, from reaching over residential houses, to far and high reaches, such as replacing AC units from the roof of multi-storey buildings, lifting pallets to roof tops or tricky residential jobs. Left: The crane’s design even allows it to move objects through low spaces. With up to 32m reach, the crane truck uses a fly jib and winch for added length and placement of objects. Below: One of Swanson’s projects was lifting a spa 28metres over a residential house and winching it into position. Note the flex of the mast, which can safely bow 2m.

12 | Truckbody&Trailer

Swanson Transport has commissioned three 10-wheeler crane trucks for long-reach projects, using a Palfinger crane that folds neatly over the added axle at the rear. At the end of the job, the 32m crane folds neatly into a relatively compact space.

Before that, adds Nick: “We were using our eight-wheeler long-

as it shortens the wheelbase and turning circle. Each design has its

reduced operating speed. Sliding elements of the crane are made of

own merits, but with the initial design, the axle lift was limited by

synthetic material with a high-quality KTL coating, which simplifies

mechanicals, and when it was lifted, it actually increased the turning

service schedules. The crane’s ‘Powerlink Plus’ also offers a 15

circle. With the axle on the rear, all of a sudden it becomes an eight-

degree reverse linkage system, allowing it to reach through low-door

jib adds another 15 metres, and provides extra flexibility for where you can get stuff onto sites. So you can go up 4-5 flights and across a building… then this one has a winch as well, so you can lower it on the other side of a building. Obviously not heavy stuff: at full reach, you’re good for maybe 250kg, things like air-conditioning units on the top of buildings, pallets with timber onto building sites, roofing tiles, spa baths into backyards, for example. We also have a TMC trombone trailer that can transport 25m sheets of roofing for us to lift.” Nick also recalls a recent residential job, where the buildings were so close together, they couldn’t walk a water tank to the back, so had to lift it over and in. “It’s amazing to see the bow in the crane,” adds Nick. “When it’s lifting at full reach, once the weight hits the ground and takes the weight off, the crane visibly lifts around two metres!” Having a good partner has been vital to the vehicle, says Nick. “The team at OTEL gets involved up-front in the design and checks everything all the way through. If there is ever a question or a problem, they’re on the phone to double-check and we are invited onsite for regular catch-ups and build meetings. Sometimes the truck manufacturers change little things, even though it’s the same truck, so something that was done on the last truck, might have to be moved on a new one. But communication is really good, and we always end up with a good product. OTEL Managing Director, Kane Metcalfe says: “Swanson Transport has been a long-standing and valuable customer of ours. More than that, they are both customers and friends. Nick and Jeff often pop in for a chat and it is always a pleasure to deal with them. Over the last few years, both our businesses have grown and we have a great partnership that has stood the test of time. I love seeing the orange and white trucks out on the road, they really look smart”. “With OTEL, you go to them with an idea of what you want and they run with it and usually make it better. You know what you want, but until you see it, you’re unsure. For example with this new 10-wheeler being built, we’re looking to fit bollards to make it a safer working platform on the deck of the truck. Often being at an elevated point gives a better view of the site, but if you’re standing on the deck of the truck, it’s a fall hazard, so we’re putting bollards to stand up there and have it as a safe zone - which for us is a lot safer than being on the ground where there are many other hazards. So we’ve explained that to OTEL and they’re working with us to come up with a solution. And make it work in the real world.” With the success of the 10-wheeler prompting the third build, you could say for OTEL and Swanson, building crane trucks like this isn’t too much of a reach. point, rather than closing in and over the feed, the sides simply go straight up, creating the open-top design. It’s a huge difference with the opening expanding from 900mm to 2.4 metres – almost three-times the size. Once it’s all loaded, a large tarp simply rolls over to cover it in a matter of seconds. Weight increases as a result, but so does payload (3-4 tonne). “When we build a normal bin, we use 3mm sheet, and the shape

Adds Brad: “The biggest advantage is safety, as there’s no need to climb up on top of the bin. Most sites won’t allow you up there these days. “Loading is faster… it takes 10-15 minutes instead of 30-40, and when you’re doing 7-8 short-haul loads a day, it makes a hell of a difference,” he adds. “There’s way less spillage and waste, so it doesn’t need to be cleaned as often – maybe hosed off once a day.

“Plus you don’t need a specialist loading machine, like the aeroplane bucket. We joined Brad and Waharoa Transport’s Roydon Prince, with a truck and trailer combo that perfectly highlights the differences between the conventional and open-top auger bin designs. With the truck already

loaded, we head to the local bulk store to load up the trailer, and as promised, within 10 minutes it’s full and ready, via the wheel-loader, with barely any spillage or mess. We drive to a local farm to fill the silos with feed, Roydon parks in position and starts manoeuvring the trailer’s auger into place. Then he starts the trailer’s diesel powerpack, another key difference: the diesel engine slung under the trailer has become an integral part of

Jack-knifing the truck and trailer allows double unloading, thanks in part to the Deutz diesel engine which powers the self-contained trailer.

Warren Auger Bins, and is fitted to 95 percent of trailers. “We run a Deutz oil-cooled, three-cylinder 45hp diesel engine,” explains Brad. “Because it’s such a rough environment, we moved away from a radiator, so it’s just hydraulic oil, engine oil and diesel - the whole system only carries around 60-litres of oil, and it barely gets over 45 degrees. “It’s all reasonably foolproof: it runs an ECU looking after oil pressure and temperature. It starts at idle, which allows the boom to fold out, and once the augers start moving, you flick a switch and it comes up to a preset rpm. And the 40-litre diesel tank will do at least 12 loads.

Waharoa’s open-top bin under construction in 2017.

Above: Radio remote allows safer and better viewing when standing back to view the top of a silo. It’s also faster to switch off when it fills, and makes it easier when double-filling from truck and trailer.

Truckbody&Trailer | 23

“Most of the farms have two silos,” adds Brad. “So the driver will back up and fold the auger out and get the trailer engine going, and then unhook the back of the truck and unload them both together. Some even jack-knife the trailer so it doesn’t have to be unhooked.

Below: The Deutz oil-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine powers the trailer’s augers and keeps the trailer independently operating in situations when the trailer is disconnected from the truck, or working in unison with it.

They’ll get a 30 tonne payload off in 15 minutes. “Another advantage is that short augers can’t reach some taller silos. You could only get 22-24ft augers, and we’ve seen silos up to 30ft, so we’ve pushed the auger length out to 30ft. But with the diesel powerpack, the driver has the option of unloading the truck into the trailer, transferring the load to the long auger, and unloading the whole 30t without shifting. Usually it unloads around one-tonne a minute, depending on how free-flowing the product is. Adds Brad: “Also, when they were PTO-driven, if a truck ever broke down, the trailer became useless. Or people would forget to hook up the hydraulic hoses and drag them the whole way back and ruin them.” As Roydon fires up the Deutz and moves the discharge auger into position via the hand-held radio remote, he starts unloading the feed into the silo by cranking the compartment handles. We stand back to see the top of the stinger, and after 10-15 minutes the diesel engine audibly changes to a more strained note, a sign that the silo’s full. A press of a button stops the auger, which Roydon adds, says is especially helpful when double-filling. Brad also explains: “It’s a gravity-fed floor… they run as two separate auger systems, so as soon as the discharge loads up and starts to fight against a full silo, it relieves pressure on the floor auger.” So with all the benefits of the open-top, why would anyone not choose a conventional design? Explains Brad: “The only people who wouldn’t really use it are the chicken feed guys, as it’s quarantine; they load out of a mill and only have the smallest hole they can… otherwise, everyone would have one of these open-tops. This year, pretty much everything’s going to be open-top.” With his auger bins going from north Auckland to Invercargill, just like the new design, Warren Auger Bins has a wide reach. It’s definitely open for new business. Contacts: Warren Auger Bins: 027 7309 7920 Waharoa Transport: 07 888 8158

there’s no need to change delivery lines. Truckbody&Trailer | 27

“Another major benefit lies in the gravity-fed bulk delivery to underground tanks and service stations. With a conventional system, where the order is less than a full compartment load, that lesser amount then has to be loaded in the compartment at the terminal, meaning that trucks are often setting out with less than a full load, thereby eating into operating efficiency. “With PreciPURE, the gravity drop is still metered, so that a precise, preset amount can be delivered. The balance in a compartment can then be delivered to another customer.” Ivan also explains that the possibility of human error leading to the wrong product being delivered is virtually eliminated: “The product in each compartment has been preset at the depot and a visual identifier set on the relevant manifold inlet. “The system has potential capabilities beyond this. When a truck is being filled at the terminal, for example, digital systems can confirm the product being put in a particular compartment of the truck, and can also check the truck’s ID to confirm compartment capacities and ensure they cannot be overfilled.” At service stations, with the relevant electronic chips installed on the underground tanks, the possibility of overfill following an incorrect estimate of how much a tank can take is eliminated. The same system can identify the product held in a tank, for complete protection against crossover contamination. Widespread adoption of this technology, says Ivan, will depend upon who was prepared to carry the cost of installing the chips: “Basically, it’s a question of ‘Who gains?’, and when that has been answered, ‘Who pays?’” The manifold is set on a slight slope to ensure complete drainage between delivery of different products. The draindown time for the system, adds Ivan, can also be adjusted electronically. PreciPURE is one of a suite of applications developed by Alfons Haar under the overall name of PreciCONTROL, that use common hardware. In the six years that Alfons Haar has been operating in Australia, it has proved to be the most popular, says Ivan, and he expects the same to be the case in New Zealand: “It ticks a lot of boxes for both countries, where the typical fuel distributor has a very varied business – one day they’re delivering to farms, the next service stations, or boats, or logging and construction machines, or pumping to aboveground tanks. “In Europe, with a greater concentration of people, there are dedicated specialist delivery chains for every type of customer. The same applies to the metro areas of Australia in New Zealand, of 28 | Truckbody&Trailer

Nickel, Fotheringhame, Warren-Garland, Glasgow and Bison. CWS, Kraft, MTT, SEC and MF Kings held their share while all others lost share. One of the difficulties in analysing trailer registration is that a significant number do not show either a manufacturer or model name, often both. Tankers in particular are a problem and at the end of 2017 there were 19 unidentified with no clues to their make or end use, and one that specifies LPG. Over the following two weeks after this data was collated, additional information became available, so we’ve been able to attribute a further two trailers each to both Tanker Engineering and Lowes, and one or two other types to other manufacturers. We have applied a cut-off at three units, so those manufacturers registering less than three are included in ‘Other’. Looking at the ‘area’ graph shows that Auckland, Christchurch,
