The Day of Goodwill (Public Holiday)
The Day of Good Will better known to most as Boxing Day. The Day of Goodwill which is official South African public holiday that falls on the day after Christmas each year. It was renamed by the South African Government in 1994 to sever ties to a colonial past, the holiday was initially created in honour of the time when people in the UK spent their day ‘boxing up’ their lovely Christmas gifts. The Day of Goodwill is best celebrated with family and friends at the beach, next to a braai, or simply by practicing goodwill unto others and sharing in the South African summer festivities.

6 December is a day of great significant in South Africa due to two historical events that took place. The first of these was in 1838, when the Battle of Blood River took place between the Voortrekkers and the Zulus. The Voortrekkers, having moved into the interior of South Africa during the Great Trek, were eager to settle on land. The region that they intended to settle on was already inhabited by the Zulu people. Thus the Voortrekker leader, Piet Retief was eager to negotiate with the Zulu chief Dingane. Having misunderstood Retief's intentions, Dingane planned an ambush and murdered Retief and his party of 100 people. This act culminated in the Battle of Blood River, in which 470 Voortrekkers, having the advantage of gunpowder, defeated the 10 000 strong Zulu army. This Voortrekker victory was commemorated since then as the Day of the Vow.
The second historical event that took place on 16 December was in 1961, when Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) was formed. This was the military wing of the African National Congress (ANC), which was launched to wage an armed struggle against the apartheid government. Prior to its formation, the ANC had largely approached the fight against apartheid through passive resistance, but after the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, where peaceful protestors were indiscriminately shot by police, passive resistance was no longer seen as an effective approach in bringing apartheid to an end. MK mostly performed acts of sabotage, but its effectiveness was hampered by organizational problems and the arrest of its leaders in 1963. Despite this, its formation was commemorated every year since 1961. South Africa's first non-racial and democratic
government was tasked with promoting reconciliation and national unity. One way in which it aimed to do this symbolically was to acknowledge the significance of the 16 December in both the Afrikaner and liberation struggle traditions and to rename this day as the Day of Reconciliation.
On 16 December 1995, the Day of Reconciliation was celebrated as a public holiday in South Africa for the first time. This Info was gathered from South African History Online
WHAT IS WORLD AIDS DAY? World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988. Today, many scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. But despite this, people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others from HIV, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with HIV. World AIDS Day is important as it reminds the public and Government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.
WHAT SHOULD I DO ON WORLD AIDS DAY? World AIDS Day is an opportunity for you to learn the facts about HIV and put your knowledge into action. Find out how much you know by taking our online quiz: Are you HIV aware? Test your knowledge and awareness by taking the quiz and act aware by passing the quiz on and sharing it with your friends on Twitter and Facebook.
If you understand how HIV is transmitted, how it can be prevented, and the reality of living with HIV today - you can use this knowledge to take care of your own health and the health of others, and ensure you treat everyone living with HIV fairly, and with respect and understanding.
You can also show your support for people living with HIV on World AIDS Day by wearing a red ribbon, the international symbol of HIV awareness

Redi Hlape For someone whose only aspiration when growing up was to be an adult so she can have independence and freedom, she has clearly done far more and has turned into a woman many young girls look up to and aspire to be like. Coming from a background where violence was at the order of the day, she persevered with her studies and obtained an honours degree in English Literature from the University of Johannesburg. She started her career as a reporter at Network Radio News and since then has become a respected reporter, news anchor and talk show host. She is currently on radio (Cape Talk & Radio 702) and has published a book, Endings & Beginnings, for which she won the 2013 Sunday Times Alan Paton Award. Over the years as a reporter and news anchor she has interviewed prominent news makers such as President Thabo Mbeki, Tony Blair, Colin Powell, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela and many more. Redi has also run several marathons and ultra-marathons including the Comrades and Two Oceans marathons. Naturally, her love for literature has also made her an avid reader. Redi says that literature as a whole has exposed her mind to different realities and taught her valuable lessons – a quest she still continues. Redi never forgot the struggles she had to endure and drew strength from her experiences to persevere to achieve her goals.
Natalie Du Toit Natalie du Toit has become an inspiration for many people around the world and for South Africans in particular. In 2001 Natalie lost her leg in a scooter accident at the tender age of 16 when she was driving to school. Even in the hospital, while recovering, she was already dreaming of getting back to swimming. Before the accident she competed in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lampur. Less than two years after the accident, she qualified for the finals of the 800 meter freestyle at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. This was the first time an amputee in the modern era had raced in the finals of an able-bodied international swimming competition. Natalie also became the first amputee ever to qualify for the 2008 Olympics, where she was placed 16th in the 10 000m “Marathon” swim. Natalie made her debut at the Paralympic Games in 2004 winning 15 Paralympic medals in all – 13 gold and two silver. The last being at the 2012 London Paralympic Games where she won three golds and one silver. After a career spanning 22 years Natalie has stopped taking part in competitive swimming, but still delivers talks where she shares her life’s journey with audiences in a candid, informal way which is both riveting and motivational.
STARTING A BEAUTY SALON Create a clean and safe atmosphere. Salons thrive on an environment that is clean, safe and relaxing, where customers can receive prompt and professional service.
Cleanliness is a particularly important element that can draw clients in again and again. Be sure your towels, foot baths, and other equipment's are washed, clean and odor-free.
Keep your tools sharp and current. Your clients must be able to trust that the products and tools that you use on them are of top-notch quality and safe. You cannot afford to put your clients at risk from infections, as it could damage your reputation.
Make the atmosphere relaxing. Play soft music, use gentle lighting and keep loud chatter between your employees at a minimum.
Keep your clients satisfied. It is important that your business create and maintain the desirable reputation as a quality hair and salon operation, so that your clients keep returning for maintenance. Try to give them the best possible experience each time, and go out of your way to make them feel valued. A salon’s best marketing tool is word-of-mouth. If a client is happy with the results, he or she will come back to the your salon; after all, it's a question of trust. Satisfied clients can then help advertise your business to their friends, family, and colleagues. Word can easily spread about the great look and outstanding personal service that your salon provides.
Offer a wide range of services (optional). This could give you a distinct advantage over those who offer only one or two types of services. Many clients prefer to have their hair, nails and face done in one place, instead of going to three different places.
While you can specialize in one main area (e.g. hair), giving your clients the convenience of a one-stop beauty shop can set your business apart from your
