H

eritage month I personally love this month

because it is a few weeks closer to October (beginning of Summer) and because it is our National Heritage Month. In this month of September we celebrate our cultural traditions in the wider context of the great diversity of cultures, beliefs, and traditions that makes up the nation of South Africa. Find out more on page 4 to 6 on our National Heritage day and how it came about that we now celebrate this day.. This month we profile Mrs Nhlanhla Khanyile Founder and CEO of Ngwane Cake Angels. We wanted to know more about what made her decide on bakery as a business, why & how she started Ngwane Cake Angels. In every business or in every thing you do you always come across some obstacles Nhlanhla will give us some advice on how to overcome those challenging times whether in your daily life or in business. Starting and running a successful business does not take a day, it takes time , money, hard work and sweat. That is why most business people always advise us to start something that we are passionate about, the kind of business we want to start because if you are doing something that you love you will hardly fill the strain and you will hardly give up that easily. We hope that these business ideas we give you on page 12-13 do help you.

Shaka was the legendary Zulu King who played an important role in uniting disparate Zulu clans into a cohesive nation. Each year Zulu Kings and warriors gathered at King Shaka's grave in Stanger and honor him on this day. The Public Holidays Bill presented to the Parliament of South Africa at the time did not have 24 September included on the list of proposed public holidays. As a result of this exclusion, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), a South African political party with a large Zulu membership, objected to the bill. Parliament and the IFP reached a compromise and the day was given its present title and seen as a public holiday.

NHLANHLA KHANYILE NGWANE CAKE ANGELS This month we profile Emmarentia Xolisile Khanyile (a.k.a Nhlanhla Khanyile Brownsugar). We wanted to find out about her journey to starting Ngwane Cake Angels where it all began and has it been so far.

Tell us about Emmerantia Xolisile Khanyile ( a.k.a Nhlanhla Brownsugar) I was born in 1983 August 29 in Pimville, Johannesburg. I grew up in Ashdown, Pietermaritzburg raised by my aunts, grandparents Bertha and Moses Ndlovu. I studied at Ashdown Primary School then went to Russell High School where I had art as one of my subjects and fell in love with it. After high school I had hoped to either be an artist or a social worker but my views and my parents views were not the same as they didn't understand what art was all about. I found myself studying Hospitality Management at Durban University of Technology which was called ML-Sultan back then.

What happed at DUT or when did you decide that the study path you had chosen was not for you? I confirmed on my second year that it was not what I wanted and just to confirm that I did voluntary work in one of the hotels in Durban. Whilst studying I waitressed at functions i.e. weddings and the Durban July . In 2003 I decided to drop out, although there were implications ( I had to finish paying my tuition myself), after my in service training I left school worked at a distribution company in Pinetown then got a job at Sanlam Sky Solutions as a customer service consultant which I did for 6years and studied part-time through UNISA and obtained a certificate in Customer Service Management. I left Sanlam Sky Solutions and worked at Liberty Life as a Financial Advisor where I studied and got FAIS accreditation certificate.

I moved on to Bidvest Steiner and worked as a Hygiene Consultant for a few months then left to Coca-Cola Fortune in Port-Shepstone where I worked as a temporary Account Developer for a few months and again left since I was struggling to work, study and take care of my family due to distance and costs.

When and how did you see that you have a talent in baking? I spent two years unemployed and baked my first cake in 2012 for my youngest son which was hard like a brownie but my family and friends liked it and complemented me. My older sister then asked me to bake my nephew’s Mickey Mouse cake in August 2013. She bought all the ingredients and tools needed for that chocolate cake. The cake came out beautifully and her friends complemented it so much and they told me maybe this was where my gift and talent was which I didn't believe to be true. A friend of mine ordered cupcakes and she spread the word about my baking, another friend ordered her birthday cake which also brought in good reviews and sparked interest and brought in more quotes and requests.

From then my mom, aunt and my husband motivated me to taking this business sethemed cakes by NCA rious.

The birth of NGWANE CAKE ANGELS (NCA) My family helped me by advertising my cakes and assisted me financially to buy the tools needed to do my work. The cakes were advertised on & . NCA was born and now has managed to buy a proper convection oven which I didn't think I could get in under a year as it cost us R8000. We are now based in JHB at Weltevreden Park-Roodepoort.

How has the journey to starting NCA been?

This has been and still is an exciting and mysterious journey for me as it has shown me the power of God in practicality , His presence in every step and I can't wait to see what He has in store in the future for Ngwane Cake Angels as His Word says " 11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

We plan to soon have our own bakery, create employment and spread the ultimate cake experience around S.A and wherever God leads us.
