Ed’s note Ilove successful people they inspire and motivate me just like TS Biz Mag. Whenever I listen to their stories it makes me see that every thing is really up to us like the saying ‘you reap what you sow’. There are people who have started businesses with no cent and now are millionaires because of their hard work and determination. They believed in whatever they were doing and gave it their all. What is stopping us in doing just that? Why are we afraid of what people will think if you started selling fruits or vegetables from home? Why are we afraid of what people will say if you fail? isn't failure part of learning so that we do better in the future not repeating those same mistakes as before and knowing where and what you did wrong? I’m not perfect and I certainly do not know it all but one thing I know for sure is going out there and searching for that job or starting that small business step by step you will succeed and you will never know until you do it. It not easy but at the end you will have the last laugh. No matter how small that job or business is, it’s better than nothing. Good people lets go out there and spread our wings the sky is the limit and remember we reap what we sow (uvuna okutshalile). This month Noscelo Duma knocks some sense in our heads about finding Mr. Right. We look at how TS Biz Mag was started.

YOU DECIDE THE CASE OF MR RIGHT

The bumper sticker with three old ladies sitting at the bus stop waiting, they are in their eighties and it says “been waiting for Mr. Right since in their 20s. We’ve seen those stickers and have probably laughed about it the truth is most of us can relate. The question in most of the ladies minds’; where love lives are concern is: Is really there a Mr. right for me out there? Will he ever come? Can something as good as that happen to me? Even go as further as reading any magazine article on how to spot, find and keep Mr. right. Does that mean you are desperate? I think as long as you are not making it your only concern about your future, then you are fine. Everyone has a description of the guy they want in their life. The question is, are you looking for Mr. fantasy or Mr. reality. Is your Mr. right fantastic in color or realistic? Dark, tall handsome, successful and driven. You might be putting too much emphasis on what is seen on the outside than what’s really on the inside. So you find a guy who matches all that, driven, successful, dark, tall and handsome since that’s what you are looking for. Do you think that the way he treats you will be rooted on all these qualities? I didn’t think so. He may buy you bags, have your friends saluting you for a good taste, wine and dine you because he can afford it but success and looks can’t buy character, and my friend I tell you the happiness you are looking for can only offspring from his character.

Your second problem in finding this Mr. right of which you speak would be your high expectations. Grew up watching Disney movies and Days of Our Lives, my friend you have been misled. You are a beautiful princess that goes without a doubt but that man is definitely not Prince Charming or Hope’s Bo. He is a man who has a past, a man who might have had it really hard growing up in his relationships with people close to him. This is a guy who has scars because of rejection, heart break, betrayal, abuse by people who were in his life. This guy has scars and he doesn’t even know how to handle some of his deep emotions, he doesn’t know how to love because he probably has never been loved in a proper way before. You come in this person’s life and you demand that he must love you the way you want to be loved, when you don’t even know his definition of love. You come in this person with your own void because your dad didn’t love you enough and you want him to compensate for something he had nothing to do with. My friend I am not defending all those men who have treated you with no respect and as an object. In fact, I advise you to walk away if you are in that situation; it is not worth the pain. What I am saying here is at least try and see all sides of this story. If you take time to know your partner, stop compering him to other people and stop setting high standards as if he told you he had a Ph.D. in relationships. Take time to know him, don’t impose what you think love is, let him show you his version of love and if he does you will tell if he loves you or just wasting your time. Who knows maybe you have found your Mr. right, you just have been caught up in a fantasy. I don’t know, you decide.

How did the idea of starting a azine come about?

mag-

The idea came about in 2009 when I was still working as an Admin Clerk and I approached a friend of mine as we were discussing the idea of starting a business together. We both were excited about the idea we brainstormed and did some research but after a few days the idea faded as we had seen how much it costs to start a magazine.

What happened next? I loved the magazine idea so much that even after I had seen that at that time it was not feasible I continued designing and writing. My superiors loved my work and they would ask me to help them with creating pamphlets for cancer awareness, departmental functions, medical research, private functions and even for their private businesses. They were all impressed with my work and most of them suggested I do it professionally.

Sthembile tells us about her journey to starting and running TS Biz Mag. The magazine that motivates and inspires mostly the youth on their educational philosophy and business skills.

How long did it take you to get the magazine up and running? I thought about it as I also saw that my work was beautiful considering I had no formal tertiary education on graphic designing, journalism and in writing. It is said that practice makes perfect so I created my ten page mag

I designed my own website and Gmail account. It took me so many years to have the mag up and running. I tested my mag in 2012 and I was surprised by the feedback. So in 2013 I officially registered the magazine and in August 2014 we made it to be a monthly publication with the assistants this company in Durban that assist us with printing.

How has the journey been so far? Starting and running a magazine is not an easy job more especially if there are targets to be reached and payments to be made. The journey has not been easy at all each an every single day has it’s own challenges. I have thought about giving up a number of time but motivations by various inspirational books and speakers help me a lot.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to start their own magazine? My advice to some one wanting to start a magazine or any other business would be:

* start something they are passionate about as you won’t give up on that business easily. You won’t feel to much strain and hard work that you put on that business. * Research, research and research as this helps you be up to date with your competition, your products or your services. *Network, attend workshops or any other networking groups. I attend the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business networking's and a lot of other workshops. *Market your business get it out there by advertising on local Magazines, Newspapers, radio and even social networks. The more you people know about your business the more clients you receive also depending on the quality & professionalism. I always follow this advice by Carrie Green “Wherever you are, whatever you do persevere like never before, stay flexible taking those little steps towards making your dream come true.” Best of luck to everybody

Step 1 Research the toy industry through resources such as the Toy Industry Association. Find out what types of toys are popular for girls, boys and different age groups, as well as which toys capture parent's attention. Look for trends such as educational toys and eco-friendly selections. _____________________________

Step 2 Decide whether you want to operate your toy store business online, as a brick-and-mortar or both. An online store can save you the expenses of a monthly lease and utilities. ______________________________

Step 3 Identify the target market you wish to focus on with your toy business. You could opt to offer personalized toys, toys targeted to little girls between the ages of birth and 3 or "green" toys. Knowing your target consumer will help you as you select the types of toys to carry, pick your price points, decide where to advertise and how to set up your toy store.

Step 4 Craft a name for your toy store business that will attract your target market. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce to find out if you need special permits or licenses to operate your store. Find out how to register your business as a legal entity. ______________________________

Step 5 Create a startup budget for your toy store business. Include how much money you have

to invest in your business, money you plan to

borrow and the cost for essentials, such as monthly lease, marketing materials, hiring a staff, purchasing inventory and supplies, and insurance. _____________________________

Step 6 Connect with toy suppliers and makers who create items that fit the wants and needs of your target market. Find out the order minimum, how long it takes them to arrive, how often they update their inventory, whether you'll get assigned your own account manager and how to place orders.

__________________________

Step 7 Scout potential locations for your toy store business. Identify areas where your target market lives or frequents, if you elect to run a brick-and-mortar operation. Once you find a location, sign a lease and hire a space planner or decorator to help you identify ways to set up the toy store for an optimal experience. _________________________

Step 8 Hire a graphic designer and a web designer to create marketing materials for your toy store business. You need a logo, business cards, brochures and a website. If you plan to operate an online store, work with your graphic designer to create a shopping cart function on your site, which allows online shopping.

Step 9 Purchase inventory, shelves and racks and begin to set up your store. Paint it in kid-friendly colors and use murals to decorate the walls. _____________________________

Step 10 Plan an in-store grand opening event to introduce your customers to the products and services your toy store business offers. Work with a direct mailing list broker to come up with a list of potential customers who have children or grandchildren. Create a postcard invitation to mail to each potential customer, purchase advertising space in local online and offline publications, and cross promote with local businesses who target the same market.
