TRUETT SEMINARY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM This program is for those who long to go deeper than Sunday School will take them, whether for ministry purposes or simply for personal edification. This includes bi-vocational ministers without seminary degrees as well as church leaders and laypeople. Our goal is to build faith and understanding, to be better equipped for whatever ministry opportunities God leads. This is about faith - not academics. NO DUE DATES - NO GRADES - NO BILLS - NO STRESS Most of the assignments require writing only a paragraph or two at a time.
Reading assignments are modest (generally around 20 pages a week - though the amount depends on the subject) No lectures - though supplementary videos are frequently provided for those who want them. COST AND FINANCIAL AID?

The Worship of God A NOTE FROM THE ARTS & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE As the Advent decorations have been taken down and stored for another year I would like to thank the following people who have been so helpful to the Arts and Environment committee for so many years: Eileen Alverson, Helen Brown, Phyllis Chatlos, Angie Fuller, Ed Gilliland, Larry Jones, Ben Lassiter, Cheryl Lewkowsky, Marianne Neth, Jenny Pickard, Martha Reppert, Irene Thomas and Gerry Walther. The class will be a six week study around the book "At the Crossroads - Leadership Lessons for the Second Half of Life”. This Bible-based small group study will focus on how to live a purposeful and spiritually healthy life in retirement. We will examine how to make the next part of life the best while making a significant difference in the lives of others. We will also consider what needs to happen in advance to prepare for retirement. Participants will hopefully conclude the study with a greater understanding of God’s plan for their lives during this highly anticipated and meaningful phase of life. THAILAND MISSION TRIP Our mission team has made it safely to Thailand and begun their work. Jason Edwards, Mike Lassiter, Blane Baker, Bill Gossett, Jeff Buscher, Christian Wyatt and Daniel Bittel have traveled to the Upland Holistic Development Project in Mai Ai, Thailand to build and strengthen relationships, explore future mission opportunities, and to demonstrate possible uses of both an aquaponics system and solar recharging stations. OTHER PRAYER CONCERNS Thailand Mission Team: departed on Jan 9 and will return on Jan 21. Carla Franck, Alleen’s daughter-in-law, health concerns. John Arnold, results from bone marrow sample. Kathy Benavidez, pending surgery, prayers. Ramsey Bartlow, upcoming surgeries on Jan 31 and Feb 7 in St. Louis Loretta Hughes, health concerns. Charlotte Ruby Tankersley, baby daughter of Tyler and Jess. Jorge Yohe, newborn grandson of Kent and Karin. Smith Swanson babies: Asher (“Ash”; 3lb, 14 oz) and Eleanor (“Nell”; 4 lb, 13 oz) are doing well, breathing and maintaining their temperatures on their own and nursing healthily. The doctors and nurses at the KU medical center are very encouraged by their progress and expect their stay in the NICU to last only 1-2 more weeks as long as no setbacks occur. Charles, Stephanie, and Finn appreciate all the kind words, prayers, and support they’ve received from everyone in this wonderful, loving community. Shannon Padgett, niece of Teresa & Matt Anderson, has been diagnosed and is receiving treatment for Ewing's Sarcoma.
Kristin Wooldridge completed her Master of Divinity from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in May. Currently, she is discerning her call to ministry, practicing self-care and focusing on her family. She is married to Amon and they are the parents of Ian, Kaylee and Rhett. She enjoys serving Second as a volunteer. Linda Greason is married to Greg and has two sons, two wonderful daughters-in-law, two grandsons and a new grand baby due in March. She loves retirement and the time it gives to pursue fun with friends and family, volunteer activities, gardening and other hobbies. Karen Rogers has been a member of Second Baptist since the first Sunday she visited the church 12 years ago. She is involved in numerous church activities and especially appreciates the music, missions and training opportunities available through 2BC. Shae Simpson is a fourth grader at Schumacher Elementary. She is the daughter of Emily and Noah Simpson. Bill Stilfield is a Liberty native who returned to the area after spending forty years in Los Angeles working in the music industry. He is a member of the choir, and he and wife, Cathy, have been members of Second since 2013. Jacque Stouffer has been a member of 2BC since 1992. She is a fundraising consultant who loves to read in her spare time. Amon Wooldridge is a Senior Director with Cerner and has just celebrated his 15 year anniversary. He and Kristin have been married 17 years and are the parents of Ian, Kaylee and Rhett. He enjoys running all over Liberty training for half marathons. Ian Wooldridge is the oldest son of Amon and Kristin Wooldridge. He is an 8th grader at Discovery Middle School. At Second he is involved with choir, student ministry and VBS. He is a Life Scout with Boy Scouts Troop 376.
Do you have a favorite type of vacation travel? I do. It is camping road trips. I think my folks planted love of nature in my DNA. All my life, few experiences have refreshed and inspired me more than getting up close and personal with God’s good earth. I love the desert, the mountains, coastlines – I love it all. And the farther I remove myself from cities and crowds, the happier I am. One tool which has made nature even more accessible and enjoyable for me is the GPS. I bought this second-hand one on-line about 12 years ago. Having the GPS to plug into my car’s lighter makes me feel free as a bird. I can point my car in any direction that beckons, wander until I give out, and then just hit “home.” This jewel of a GPS takes me right back to wherever I tell it I want to roost for the night. A few years ago, a friend from India was with me on a road trip when she became aware of how much I use the GPS. As I turned off the car’s engine at a rest stop, the normal message popped up saying “External power lost.” It was just a reminder that the maps would be disappearing until the car was turned on again. My friend, however, only got a quick look at the message on the screen and was alarmed. “Oh no! Eternal power has been lost!” She believed the GPS had somehow died a sudden death and would no longer be available as our companion and guide. Later, I reflected on how my relationship to this GPS reminds me of my faith story. My childhood plug-in to security and guidance was a caring, disciplined family. Our parents made sure we four children showed up where we were supposed to be, prepared and with appropriate attitudes. That included regular attendance at Spring Valley Baptist Church in Raytown, where the pews are still filled with gracious people who love the Lord. I was 9 years old when I took that step forward to say I wanted to be a Christ-follower and I was baptized in that church. During my teens, connections for my spiritual GPS broadened to include sources other than my parents. Increasingly, I learned to listen to the voices of other adults, peers, and media. And as I grew in faith, I became more connected with that external power, the eternal power accessible through prayer, scripture and communion with the saints. Other than childhood, the most formative years of my life were when I moved away from home for college and career. In unfamiliar environments, I was introduced to a broader frame of reference for my life experiences. I was privileged to see how God was at work in ways I hadn’t considered and I began to rely more fully on a new version of GPS, God’s Positioning System. A desire to see the world as an integrated whole, all created by God and populated by people created in God’s image, that desire continues to direct my journeys. It is my prayer that I will always seek to understand how God is working in the world and how God wants to work in me. I pray I’ll be sensitive to the fact that turning off my connection to God, even for a moment, is like unplugging myself from the external power source, the eternal power that God is always there offering if I’ll just stay plugged in.
