First Followers First Sunday of Lent

If you are a first-time guest, we invite you to complete a guest card from a pew pocket or the Friendship Register and drop it in the offering plate so that we may get acquainted with you. Also, text “Explore” to 816-355-4736. We would like to communicate with you via text and email with some brief informational messages over the next few weeks. Your information is private and will not be used for any other purpose than to keep you informed about 2BC. Please see an usher if you’d like a listening aid. Each Sunday in the Welcome Center (just inside the Kansas Street entrance on Level 1), Our Hospitality Team is waiting to help you get connected. This may include finding a Bible study class, showing you where children and student ministries meet, or sharing the day’s activities and schedule. You may also enjoy a cup of coffee at the Welcome Center’s coffee bar and get to know others at Second. Children’s worship bags, filled with books and activities, are available at the Sanctuary entrances. If you’d like an alternative for your children, childcare for birth through Pre-K is available on Level 2 at any point in the service. Our Welcome Center is also available for those with restless infants, and you can view the service on a monitor there. In addition to placing your offering in the offering plate, you can give online at 2bcliberty.org/give or via your smartphone by scanning this QR code.

We have “online giving” cards in the pew rack that you can place in the offering plate to represent your gift if you choose.

Brenda Lazenby (11:00)

Invitation to Worship Connie McNeill O God, you are our light and our salvation. Living in your presence, we have nothing to fear. Open our hearts to your word this day. As we hear the story of the call of the first disciples, make us ready to follow Jesus on whatever path He leads us. Cast aside our fears and doubts, and teach us to trust wholly in you. For we ask this in Jesus’ Name, Amen. — Nancy C. Townley Candlelighting Prelude +Hymn of Praise 349 New Testament Reading

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Words for Meditation We listen to the stories of the call of the disciples and find them interesting but unrealistic. When we look at our own lives, we believe that we could not leave everything to follow someone we didn’t know. We have many responsibilities and ties which keep us from following. But God is persistent. God understands our confusion and doubts. And God continues to call us to be in ministry and mission in this world. It may not mean leaving everything behind, but it does mean being willing to serve wherever God calls us. That’s hard. We want to place conditions on our commitment to Christ. Do you have any conditions? What are your conditions?

CHURCHWIDE TUTT CHAPEL RENOVATION SURVEY The Chapel Renovation Task Force is soliciting your feedback to ensure that we create a renovation plan that aligns with what our church community desires. We ask that you take five minutes to complete a survey to provide us with that input. There are hard copies of the survey available in The Welcome Center or you can access it online from our home page. The link is at the bottom of the home page and under the tab “Connections.” Be sure you scroll through the entire survey. The survey will close on March 5. LIVING A JESUS CENTERED LIFE Featured Sunday Class February 18 - April 1 |West Side of Social Room Connie McNeill Leader Do you believe in Jesus or do you follow Jesus? That is a pivotal question and your answer makes all the difference. You see, they are not the same. Discover Jesus throughout the Bible—creator, the second Adam, on a mission, on earth, Savior, cornerstone, new creation. We will share our stories and discover more about our place in God’s story. If we are fortunate, we will learn to walk so closely to the Rabbi that we will be covered in the dust kicked up by his feet. We can be changed by Jesus Christ, covered with His life, and made new. We can follow Jesus and not just believe in him. GREEN TEAM—TODAY Social Room | After Worship We want to hear your ideas for the team this year, and share with you what we have learned during our first year as a team. Whether you have a bright idea, professional expertise, or just a healthy curiosity, we want to hear from you. We have some hopes and dreams about solar power, LED lights, electric car charging stations, energy audits, and things we have not thought of yet. We want to be good stewards of our earth and our church budget.

MUSIC IT'S A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION The pipe organ at Second Baptist was originally installed in 1927-28. The dedicatory recital was played by Dr. Fichthorn on Tuesday, March 6, 1928. Second Baptist will be celebrating her 175th anniversary in May. The pipe organ has been in place and in use for over half the life of the church. And there was a pipe organ in the previous church building which burned in 1920. Throughout the month of February, you are invited to an "open console and pipe tour." After worship each week, you are welcome to come to the console for an explanation of all the buttons, stops and whistles. You are also invited to play the instrument. Those who wish to go up to the pipe chambers will see where the sounds are actually produced. If you would like to do this during the week, call Ann Posey to make an appointment. To celebrate this birthday, there will be a recital on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, 7 pm. The program will include congregational singing. There will be a surprise at the end. At the conclusion of the program, there will be a reception in the Assembly Room. NEW ENGLAND CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC CHAMBER SINGERS
