If you are a first-time guest, we invite you to complete a guest card from a pew pocket or the Friendship Register and drop it in the offering plate so that we may get acquainted with you. Also, text “Explore” to 816-355-4736. We would like to communicate with you via text and email with some brief informational messages over the next few weeks. Your information is private and will not be used for any other purpose than to keep you informed about 2BC. Please see an usher if you’d like a listening aid.
Each Sunday in the Welcome Center (just inside the Kansas Street entrance on Level 1), Our Hospitality Team is waiting to help you get connected. This may include finding a Bible study class, showing you where children and student ministries meet, or sharing the day’s activities and schedule. You may also enjoy a cup of coffee at the Welcome Center’s coffee bar and get to know others at Second.
Take a moment to prepare your heart for worship. “When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flocks, the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among the people, to make music in the heart.” -Howard Thurman
Children’s worship bags, filled with books and activities, are available at the Sanctuary entrances. If you’d like an alternative for your children, childcare for birth through Pre-K is available on Level 2 at any point in the service. Our Welcome Center is also available for those with restless infants, and you can view the service on a monitor there.
In addition to placing your offering in the offering plate, you can give online at 2bcliberty.org/give or via your smartphone by scanning this QR code. We have “online giving” cards in the pew rack that you can place in the offering plate to represent your gift if you choose.

LENT AND EASTER EVENTS @ 2BC TOGETHER WE BELIEVE AN EXPLORATION OF THE APOSTLE’S CREED The Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Lenten Services: Together We Believe An exploration of the Apostles Creed Ash Wednesday March 1, 2017 | 6:30 | Sanctuary “The Plural I” March 5 ....... Maundy Thursday, “The Communion of Saints,” communion April 14 Good Friday, “The Word Became Flesh, Dwelt and Died Among Us,” Tenebrae Service April 16 ................................ Easter Sunday, “On the Third Day” Evensong Wednesdays March 8 - 29 | 6:30 | Social Room | “Sola” Five hundred years ago, a movement of people began to question what their church taught and as a result, they developed the tenets of what became known at The Reformation. When you look at the tenets, you easily see the influence on Baptists as well as many other protestant traditions. During Evensong, we will
reflect on a different tenet each of the five evenings. These ancient teachings that still hold value for us today: Sola Scriptura. . .Sola Gratia. . .Sola Fide. . .Sola Christus. . .Soli Deo Gloria (Scripture alone. . . grace alone. . .faith alone. . .Christ alone), To God alone be the glory. While Sunday morning Lenten focus will be on Together We Believe, we will look at these singular, powerful tenets of much of Christian tradition. Holy Week Devotion Guide Each year we are blessed with meditations from our congregation that help guide our focus toward Resurrection. Each day will be a reflection of a Lectionary text toward drawing us closer to this week of Christ’s passion. 40 Days of Decrease is our church-wide Lenten devotional read this year. The author, Dr. Alicia Britt Chole, is our Holy Week Luncheon speaker. You can purchase your own copy, or order online at TheHub/Forms or call the church office at 781-2824 to have the church order you a copy. Cost is $10 per book from the church. Here’s a description of the experience of 40 Days of Decrease: We ache deep within to meaningfully honor Christ’s resurrection. Yet, in practice, this focal point in the liturgical calendar is often a celebration of public holiday more than it is of humanity’s hope. At day’s end, we fall asleep well-fed and perhaps even grateful, yet still somehow something short of awed. Enduring awe is rarely the fruit of a morning’s celebration. Enduring awe is the fruit of daily participation with Jesus, our resurrected love. 40 Days of Decrease invites readers to walk with Jesus through the holy decrease of less and loss that led Him cross-ward and beyond. Each day offers a meaningful consideration of Jesus’ journey through reading and reflection and then issues a challenging daily fast. Instead of social media, chocolate, and designer coffee, 40 Days of Decrease calls communities to a Lenten fasting of apathy, injustice, resentment, hypocrisy, and more for the love of God…Decrease is holy when its destination is love. We thin our lives to thicken our communion with God. (Backcover of 40 Days of Decrease). This will be a very special Lenten season as we participate in this reading and hear Alicia speak during Holy Week. Holy Week Luncheon | April 12 | 11:30 | Social Room Our speaker this year is Dr. Alicia Britt Chole. She is a writer, a speaker, a mentor, wife and mother who lives in southern Missouri. Check out her website at www.aliciachole.com. The lunch is April 12 with the food service line opening at 11:30 a.m.. Tickets for the church family will go on sale March 1. You can make reservations on The Hub/Forms or by calling the church office at 781-2824. Tickets for the community will go on sale March 15. All tickets are $10. Parents of special needs children, please take advantage of the opportunity to have a more intimate conversation with Alicia following the lunch. Special needs children are a passion of hers, as she has adopted several special needs children. Please RSVP to this “after party” on or after March 1.
MARCH 2017 MONTHLY A NOTE FROM PASTOR JASON Lent 2017: Together We Believe One of the things I love most about Second Baptist is how we create space for one another. We seem to be a place where, mostly, people spanning the theological, philosophical and political spectrum find a way to share friendship with one another in loving, gracious and even humorous ways. I’m sure we can all agree our world needs more of this. We believe this is healthy and holy. What’s more, our church seems to be a place where, mostly, people can bring their struggles, doubts and ever evolving beliefs without fear of judgement or rejection. This is also rarer than it should be among Christian communities. Questions and conversation are more than ok, they are welcomed here. We believe this is healthy and holy as well. When we hold space for one another to bring our authentic selves into community, this is healthy and holy. When we listen first with curiosity and respond first with grace, this is healthy, this is holy and this helps our life together become incredibly rich. It is in this spirit that we enter our Lenten journey. As we worship together this Lenten season, we will reflect deeply on the words of the Apostle’s Creed. We’ll hear the words and we’ll hear about the words. We do this not to create a point of exclusion, but rather growing conversation around some of the oldest and most distilled convictions of our Christian faith. The word “creed” comes from the Latin word “credo,” which means “I believe.” The earliest Christian creeds were summaries of belief, simple statements of faith confessing “Jesus is Lord.” (In fact, we find Paul expressing just this credo in Romans 10:9 and in our baptistery each time someone is baptized in our church.) By the mid-second century the Greek word for fish, IXTHUS, was thought to have been adopted by some Christians as an acronym summarizing what Christians believe about Jesus. The letters of this word are the first in the Greek words for Jesus – Christ – God’s - Son – Savior. (Another credo we hear in worship with the presentation of gifts to baptismal candidates.) And around this same time the Old Roman Symbol, an early and fairly complete version of the Apostle’s Creed, was developed as a summary statement for the Christian faith.
The Apostle’s Creed likely reached its current form and name in the fourth century, and was often used to teach faith to new Christians in preparation for their baptism. In the early church, baptism often occurred at Easter, which may give our Lenten study of the creed an even deeper sense of meaning. I hope you’ll receive it that way. I hope this study, rooted in scripture and theological history opens us up to meaningful reflection, meaningful conversation, and meaningful encounters with the living God as we worship together. I pray this Lenten season will be one where, together, we will find ourselves re-embracing resurrection faith. May it be so, Lord Jesus. Amen. With resurrection hope,
Jason Edwards

CHURCHWIDE SERVE MONTH AT 2BC Celebrating our servant volunteers as we are “Building God’s Dream Together.” When you need to remember something important, where do you write it? Your calendar? Your to-do list? A sticky note? This sticky note is to collectively remind us of something significant in our community of faith. As we continue Building God’s Dream Together at Second Baptist and beyond, we have much to be grateful for as a church. Over the last few weeks, you were invited to join Team SERVE as we celebrated and said thank you to those who serve in volunteer roles across all of the ministries in our church. Join us this last week and write a note to express your gratitude for someone who serves as a volunteer at Second. It can be to an individual or a group. As you exit worship today, please leave your note in the designated space outside of Tutt Chapel, in the vestibule, or at the front of the Sanctuary. ASH WEDNESDAY March 1 | 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. | Sanctuary This will be the beginning of our special worship emphasis through Lent, Together We Believe. This service is entitled The Plural “I” and will focus on the first two words of the Apostles Creed, “I believe.” Discussion will focus on how we use this individualistic sounding phrase as a communal confession. Student and elementary age regular Wednesday activities are suspended on Ash Wednesday so that families can participate in this service together. Mission Friends and preschool child care will be available during the service.
