If you are a first-time guest, we invite you to complete a guest card from a pew pocket or the Friendship Register and drop it in the offering plate so that we may get acquainted with you. Also, text “Explore” to 816-355-4736. We would like to communicate with you via text and email with some brief informational messages over the next few weeks. Your information is private and will not be used for any other purpose than to keep you informed about 2BC. Please see an usher if you’d like a listening aid. Each Sunday in the Welcome Center (just inside the Kansas Street entrance on Level 1), Our Hospitality Team is waiting to help you get connected. This may include finding a Bible study class, showing you where children and student ministries meet, or sharing the day’s activities and schedule. You may also enjoy a cup of coffee at the Welcome Center’s coffee bar and get to know others at Second.
Take a moment to prepare your heart for worship It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength. — Maya Angelou Isn't it amazing that we are all made in God's image, and yet there is so much diversity among God’s people? — Desmond Tutu Rats and roaches live by competition under the laws of supply and demand; it is the privilege of human beings to live under the laws of justice and mercy. ― Wendell Berry
Children’s worship bags, filled with books and activities, are available at the Sanctuary entrances. If you’d like an alternative for your children, childcare for birth through Pre-K is available on Level 2 at any point in the service. Our Welcome Center is also available for those with restless infants, and you can view the service on a monitor there.
In addition to placing your offering in the offering plate, you can give online at 2bcliberty.org/give or via your smartphone by scanning this QR code. We have “online giving” cards in the pew rack that you can place in the offering plate to represent your gift if you choose.

August 2017 Monthly A NOTE FROM PASTOR JASON
Signaling Return Our 2BC Fall Kickoff is Sunday, August 20. On this day our age-graded classes promote, and on this week our fall programming begins. We will also have food trucks ready to serve tasty meals for a picnic on the grounds after the 11:00 service. We do this to celebrate the day. We also do this to entice you back to church. In fact, until this year we affectionately called this “Back to Church Sunday” with the idea that if you’ve been away for a while (for summer vacation or even longer) this Sunday could serve as a great re-entry into spiritual practices of weekly worship, community, discipleship, and service. If you've been away in any way, this is an opportunity to return. This reminds me of the Jewish practice of T’shuvah, which literally means “turn” or “return.” In Jewish tradition, T’shuvah is most frequently associated with the High Holy Days, such as Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year). In each of the days of Rosh Hashanah, an instrument made from a ram’s horn called a shofar is blown 100 times. According to the famous Jewish philosopher Maimonides, the sound of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah is meant to wake up the soul and turn its attention to the important task of repentance…to realigning oneself with God, Scripture, and the practices of sacred community…to T’shuvah. I don’t believe we’ve calendared the blowing of a shofar at any point this month, though I do hope the promotion of classes, the prospect of picnicking, and every upcoming transition from summer habits into fall routines will signal our return. Return to the regular weekly habits of worship, community, discipleship, and service? Absolutely! And perhaps this month we could all listen closely for the music of the Spirit calling us to return to even deeper places of alignment, authenticity, awareness, and action in our relationship with God. See you soon,
Jason Edwards Senior Pastor
Search Committee for the Associate Pastor of Worship & Music Report August Update
Greetings from the Search Committee for our next Associate Pastor of Worship & Music. We are pleased to say that we have identified our top candidates and can see the end of our process in sight. We are anxious to present our church family with our recommendation, but we still have a couple of important steps in the process that we need to complete. We are currently conducting reference checks on the candidates to confirm that our perception of each candidate from our interviews is an accurate reflection of who they are. We will also be scheduling an in-person meeting with our finalist(s) and their family(ies) to have a deeper understanding of them in person. Finally, there will be conversations with our finalist about compensation, benefits and other job-related items that will need to be ironed out. After these steps are completed, we are confident that we will be able to present our recommended candidate at an 'In View of a Call' weekend. Of course, our church community at that time will be able to meet the candidate, ask questions and get to know the individual better. While we feel we are nearing the end of our process, we hesitate to put a timeline on when to expect the 'In View of a Call' weekend as we know things can shift and change with candidates who are being evaluated. Know that we are close and ask for continued prayer, for us as a committee and the finalists we have identified, that God would give us both wisdom and discernment as we decide on our next Associate Pastor of Worship & Music. Thank You, Search Committee for Associate Pastor of Worship & Music Nick Bartlow, Leslie Bunch, Jessica Greason, Don Long, Susan Miller, Ken Personett, Karen Rogers, Carol Weirich, Dustin Williams

STUDENTS
Fall is going to be an exciting time in Student Ministry! We’re looking forward to some great events like our Fall Lock-In in September and weekend-long Fall Retreat in November. We’re also planning a few fun events like our Pool Party in August and the Bonfire at the Twenter/Lankford property in October. Our weekly Bible studies, small groups, and Innermission also offer times of fun and meaningful spiritual reflection, worship, and community. There are many ways to plug-in to Student Ministry, and this fall is a great opportunity to join us! Here are a few dates to put on the calendar:
CHILDREN August 20th is the beginning of a new year in Bible Study for our preschoolers and children. Our theme this year will be “I Will Sing Forever!” We learned a song during Vacation Bible School that said it beautifully: “I will sing forever of your love come down; with my hands to heaven, sing your praises loud.” Our key Bible verse for the year is Psalm 150:6, “Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord.” BIBLE STUDY PROMOTION WEEK The pre-kindergartners through fifth grade will move to their next age class on August 20, 2017. Kindergartners through fifth grade will go to their new class for the start of Bible Study then gather in the chapel later in the morning, with their classes, to kick
off the new year. You will pick-up your children from their classroom, not the chapel. Now is a perfect time to begin a habit of being in Bible Study each week at 9:45. One of the goals we strive for at Second is helping our children to become intentional Christ-followers and growing in Christ-likeness. What better place to learn than in this Christ-centered community!
WHAT: Arts Camp WHEN: July 31-August 4
WEDNESDAY NIGHT MISSIONS CLASSES The regular Wednesday schedule will begin on August 23. Missions education is for Pre-K through Grade Five, and classes start at 6:30. Missions education includes the active care for others and Jesus’ example of humbly serving those around us. The kids engage in hands-on activities, learn about the Biblical foundation for missions, and enjoy fellowship with one another. WORSHIP CHILDCARE Friends, it’s so precious to see all ages interacting here in this fellowship together: Harvey Seely giving out tootsie rolls to the Bartlow clan, Brenda Lazenby snuggling with baby Clark Lassiter, Bill Riggs hugging on Davis Fulk. Now that’s what community is all about! You have the opportunity to be involved in similar ways. Our 11:00 worship time is in DIRE need of childcare volunteers. We are beginning to see the same people volunteering just because they feel bad when there is no one signed up! If every able adult volunteered one time each year, we would have more than enough help! So! Look at your calendar, find a Sunday that fits for you. Choose whether you will be with babies, toddlers and twos, Pre-K, or wherever needed. Either contact Gwen at gphillips@2bcliberty.org or go to 2bcliberty.org/children to pick your spot. You won’t be sorry!
SECOND FRIENDS Attention! Attention! Attention! Second Friends Preschool has a few openings in their preschool and pre-k classes for the 2017-18 school year. If you are interested or know someone who might be interested please call Second Friends, 816-781-3882, or email, bfisher@2bcliberty.org.
Hope to hear from you soon
