If you are a first-time guest, we invite you to complete a guest card from a pew pocket or the Friendship Register and drop it in the offering plate so that we may get acquainted with you. Also, text “Explore” to 816-355-4736. We would like to communicate with you via text and email with some brief informational messages over the next few weeks. Your information is private and will not be used for any other purpose than to keep you informed about 2BC. Please see an usher if you’d like a listening aid. Each Sunday in the Welcome Center (just inside the Kansas Street entrance on Level 1), Our Hospitality Team is waiting to help you get connected. This may include finding a Bible study class, showing you where children and student ministries meet, or sharing the day’s activities and schedule. You may also enjoy a cup of coffee at the Welcome Center’s coffee bar and get to know others at Second. Children’s worship bags, filled with books and activities, are available at the Sanctuary entrances. If you’d like an alternative for your children, childcare for birth through Pre-K is available on Level 2 at any point in the service. Our Welcome Center is also available for those with restless infants, and you can view the service on a monitor there.
In addition to placing your offering in the offering plate, you can give online at 2bcliberty.org/give or via your smartphone by scanning this QR code. We have “online giving” cards in the pew rack that you can place in the offering plate to represent your gift if you choose.

Deacon Service Unveiled As a Diaconate, we have two objectives that we use as our model of service. The first is Congregational Leadership. With this objective, we are in prayer for the ministerial staff and congregation. We also assist the staff any way they need assistance but particularly in helping give pastoral care. We lead in projects at the direction of the church with the Baptism Task Force being our most recent example. We conduct the ordinances that the church observes, i.e., Communion and Baptism. We collect the offering on Sunday mornings. We also do what we call Down Front Deacon. This is where we move to the front of the church at the start of the hymn of response to help anyone who makes a decision feel supported through the process. We do special events such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Coffee with the Pastor, New Member Dinner, and the Edwards Open House during the Holidays. In Congregational Care, we act as Deacon Ambassadors. We make visits to first-time visitors on Sunday afternoon and take a welcome gift provided by the church. We provide support to the ministerial staff when called upon, make hospital visits on Fridays, and intentionally pray for the staff and those on the prayer list. At our last church conference, the Deacon Baptism Task Force presented their Baptism Proposal; the Church overwhelmingly approved the changes. We are excited about the possibilities of those from other church traditions who have made Second Baptist their community of faith. We can now honor their baptism and profession of Christ in that tradition as an avenue to membership here. We are currently studying a book by Daniel Vestal entitled “Exemplars.” It asks three questions for holy conversations: 1. Who Deacons Need to Be; 2. What Do Deacons Need to Know; 3 What Do Deacons Need to Do? We also are preparing for deacon nominations, so be looking for further information on this. Drew Kingery Deacon Chair

September 2017 Monthly A NOTE FROM PASTOR JASON A Historic Move I’m so proud of you. At our July Church Conference, we made a historic move toward greater inclusion and ecumenism. After voting to accept the Deacon Baptism Task Force’s report and recommendations, we voted to amend our church membership policy. Until now, our policy (like the majority of Baptist churches in our world) has stated that only followers of Christ who have experienced believer’s baptism by immersion could be church members. At our meeting, you opened the doors wide for followers of Jesus from any Christian tradition to become full members of our church by affirming both their commitment to Jesus as Lord and the present meaningfulness of their Christian baptism. Baptists strongly value soul freedom, so this decision is quite baptistic. I’m as proud of the way we came to this decision as I am enthused by the decision itself.
Our recent process has been well documented. Following a retreat focused on baptism, the Deacon body engaged in a year-long study of baptism and church membership, which prompted them to develop a process for our church to engage this topic deeply as well. This included a Sunday lunch presentation, a Sunday morning Bible study series, a Wednesday night study series, numerous distributed baptism stories from our congregation, a formal survey of our congregation’s views on the subject, multiple Q & A sessions, a reflection time for the Task Force and then a formal report with recommendations (still available to you) which was formally accepted by the Deacon body, the Church Council and finally, the Church. The process alone was impressive. It was thoughtful and thorough. It took time, but difficult issues are worth our thorough, thoughtful attention. We are well aware that some churches have lost many members and experienced much pain as they wrestled with these issues. Your grace and openness throughout was beautiful. And honestly, I wasn’t surprised. I wasn’t surprised because this way of being is part of our congregational ethos and I wasn’t surprised because this process was actually prompted by your empathy and compassion long before that Deacon retreat in 2014. I specifically remember your feedback during our 2010 visioning retreat with Tom Sine. In public share times, people mentioned concern about loved ones who could not be members here because they felt a second baptism would diminish the meaningfulness of their first. For them, not being baptized again was a matter of Christian conviction. Months later, after we adopted our mission statement, values, and the B’s (Belong. Believe. Become), some of you came to me (and I assume to each other) and said things like “if we really mean “belong,” shouldn’t we amend our membership policy?” Many of you have been wrestling with this for quite some time. Relationship and reflection led to questions of concern, rooted in compassion. This prompted study. So much study. So many conversations. So much processing, filled with so much listening. Real listening. And it was all, from beginning to end, rooted and grounded in love. I’m so proud of you. From beginning to end our Deacons have said they wanted to develop a model for how our church might engage in any difficult dialogue. I think they have. And I hope it will serve as more than a model for future congregational conversations. In the midst of potentially conflictual conversations, I have observed a Spirit in you, and between you, our world needs to experience more often. Concern. Compassion. Thoughtfulness. Listening. Real Listening. Love. Grace. Our world desperately needs so much more of this. And, this is how Jesus wants us to embody life in this world. If this is not our normal mode of operation, perhaps we need to amend our policy. With a grateful heart,
Jason Edwards

SENIOR ADULTS THANK YOU, CARROLL MAKEMSON About ten years ago Carroll Makemson volunteered for the unpaid position of Coordinator for Senior Adults, and she has done a marvelous job of filling that void in our church staff. She has led "Coffee and Conversation" get-togethers twice a month. She has organized Wednesday night evenings out during the summer months and special outings such as our recent trip downtown to ride the streetcars from City Market to Union Station for a meal at The Harvey House Restaurant. At Christmastime, she has organized us to deliver remembrances and goodies to the homebound and those in assisted-living facilities and nursing homes. The activities Carroll has begun, organized, and presided over have been both interesting and fulfilling for all of us who have been privileged to participate. Carroll, we thank you for your unfailing enthusiasm and smiling acceptance of the vagaries of dealing with a herd of aging cats. God bless you. Carroll will be recognized during worship on September 3. We invite you to write a card or note of gratitude that can be given to her at that time. Please turn these in at the Welcome Desk no later than Bible Study at 9:45 on September 3.

CHILDREN COFFEE BREAK FOR PRESCHOOL/ CHILDREN’S BIBLE STUDY LEADERS Sunday, September 24 Once a quarter, our Sunday School teachers come a little early on Sunday morning to have breakfast together! We eat well, talk a little business, check up on the kiddos in our classes, and maybe even hear a little inspiration. It’s a precious time for me as Children’s Pastor because I have the opportunity to make sure our leaders know how thankful I am for their commitment to the spiritual growth of our children. Our next coffee break will be September 24. Gwen WORSHIP CHILDCARE Friends, it’s so precious to see all ages interacting here in this fellowship together: Harvey Seely giving out tootsie rolls to the Bartlow clan, Brenda Lazenby snuggling with baby Clark Lassiter, Bill Riggs hugging on Davis Fulk. Now that’s what community is all about! You have the opportunity to be involved in similar ways. Our 11:00 worship time is in DIRE need of childcare volunteers. We are beginning to see the same people volunteering just because they feel bad when there is no one signed up! If every able adult volunteered one time each year, we would have more than enough help! So! Look at your calendar, find a Sunday that fits for you. Choose whether you will be with babies, toddlers and twos, Pre-K, or wherever needed. Either contact Gwen
at gphillips@2bcliberty.org or go to 2bcliberty.org/ children to pick your spot. You won’t be sorry!

Search Committee for the Associate Pastor of Worship & Music Report September Update A recent Facebook post from our venerable wordsmith Sue Wright stated “What seems like the end is often the beginning.” These words ring true as we provide an update, this fourth week in August, about our search process for the next Associate Pastor of Worship & Music. We are so close to the end of this search process which will usher in a new era in the life of our church. Of course, you will ask … How close? Days? Weeks? Months? We believe that we are roughly 6-8 weeks from an official “In View of a Call” weekend. There, we did it; we actually put a timeline in writing. We could and probably should put all kinds of disclaimers along with that timeline, but we are confident that God has led us to the right individual for our church community. So barring any unforeseen complication, which could happen, the next time you hear from us within the pages of this monthly communication should be to announce the “In View of a Call” weekend. We ask for your continued prayers. Prayers that God would continue to demonstrate to our committee that we are pursuing the right individual, that God would prepare the candidate and their family for the opportunity to serve at Second Baptist and that God would begin to prepare us as a church family to welcome the candidate and their family into our church community. Thank You, Search Committee for Associate Pastor of Worship & Music Nick Bartlow, Leslie Bunch, Jessica Greason, Don Long, Susan Miller, Ken Personett, Karen Rogers, Carol Weirich, Dustin Williams
