If you are a first-time guest, please complete a guest card from a pew pocket or Friendship Register and drop it in the offering plate so that we may get acquainted with you. Also, text “Explore” to 816-355-4736. We would like to communicate with you via text and email with some brief informational messages over the next few weeks. Please see an usher if you’d like a listening aid. Each Sunday in the Welcome Center (just inside the Kansas Street entrance on Level 1), our Hospitality Team is waiting to help you get connected. This may include finding a Bible study class, showing you where children and student ministries meet, or sharing the day’s activities and schedule. You may also enjoy a cup of coffee at the Welcome Center’s coffee bar and get to know others at Second. Your entire family is welcome here! Children’s worship bags filled with books and activities are available at the Sanctuary entrances. If you’d like an alternative for your children, childcare for birth through Pre-K is available on Level 2 at any point in the service. Our Welcome Center is also available for those with restless infants, and you can view the service on a monitor there. In addition to placing your offering in the offering plate, you can give online at 2bcliberty.org/give or via your smartphone by scanning this QR code.
Take a moment to prepare your heart for worship…
For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early, to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again. ― Eric Roth, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Screenplay
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. ― Nelson Mandela
We have “online giving” cards in the pew rack that you can place in the offering plate to represent your gift if you choose.

AUGUST 2016 MONTHLY A NOTE FROM PASTOR JASON I was talking with our Mayor this week about the future growth of Liberty. It’s fascinating and exciting. Fascinating to imagine what Liberty may look after five to ten years of further growth. Exciting to think about the possibilities all of that growth represents.
The city of Liberty is preparing for these possibilities. Our city leaders are working hard to develop our city so that it is as ready as it can be to fully embrace all of the people and opportunities coming its way. I’d like for us to do the same. You may not realize this, but God has placed us here at this time in history. And God is sending people into this city that we are meant to serve and welcome into our community of faith. We need to be prepared for them, which means we have work to do. Our church is already such a wonderful community of faith, but we can get stronger. If we work together to strengthen our welcome and witness, God will use us and shape us in ways beyond our wildest dreams. But we must be committed, now and for the long haul. Working hard. Together. Fully embracing all of the possibilities God is laying before us is going to require all of us to go all in for Christ, His Church, and His mission in this world. Are you ready to go all in? Are you ready to get stronger? August 21 is our Fall Kick-off Sunday. On that day we’ll have food trucks after church, children’s classes will promote, we’ll start a new sermon series and many of our fall programs will begin the following week. My hope is that you’ll be here and you’ll bring friends, family and neighbors with you.
But I hope you won’t stop there, because August 21 is not meant to be just a high attendance Sunday. It’s meant to be the beginning of a new season in our life together, a season where we renew our ongoing commitment to Christ, Church, and Gospel mission. The opportunities are coming. Let’s get together and let’s get ready. Expectantly,
Jason Jason Edwards, Senior Pastor
CHURCHWIDE PERSONNEL COMMITTEE LISTENING SESSION The 2BC Personnel Committee will host a listening session on Sunday, August 14th from 3:00 until 4:30 in the 2BC Assembly room. This will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and offer thoughts regarding Personnel Committee practices and procedures. If you would like to submit questions to the Personnel Committee in advance, you can do that by sending them to Maggie Henderson (mhenderson@2bcliberty.org) by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10. BAPTISM: A CONVERSATION | EXPLORING OUR BELIEFS TOGETHER Throughout the fall, the deacons will be leading a church-wide exploration of the concept of baptism and its role in our individual and collective faith. There will be a variety of ways to join the conversation, starting with an all-church lunch after the 11:00 service on September 18th. Mark Wingfield from Dallas, Texas, will be here to help us start the conversation and identify some important questions for us to explore. In the following weeks Sherry McGlaughlin from Blue Ridge Boulevard Christian Church will lead an informative book study on Wednesday nights and David May from Central Baptist Seminary will guide us through a biblical study of baptism on Sunday mornings. Throughout, we’ll have opportunities to hear a wide variety of personal baptism stories from our own community of faith. Plan to share, explore, study and engage in this important conversation. NOMINATIONS FOR MUSIC PASTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE The Leadership Development Committee would appreciate your nominations for individuals to serve on the Music Pastor Search Committee. If there is someone you would like to nominate, please email Committee Chair Amy Duncan at amybduncan1@gmail.com or contact the church office at 816-781-2824.

She is responsible for our financial transactions and business functions related to paying bills, online finance, payroll, donations and being our primary interface with Miller Management, Inc., our accounting service. Additionally, while not a secretary to Pastoral Staff, she will provide assistance with larger projects and support as needed with day to day ministries. She will be in the office Wednesday through Friday 8:30 a.m4:30 p.m. Maggie Henderson is transitioning into a clearly defined role Ministry Assistant for Congregational Support. If you need assistance regarding a ministry at or on behalf of Second Baptist, Maggie is the person with whom you would work. Maggie also handles scheduling of events on the church calendar. Maggie will be in the office Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m-4:30p.m. Nicole Swanson provides support with communications, including publications, graphic design, the website, and social media. Beginning in midAugust, she will be in the office Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m-1p.m. Ellen Gregory is currently on a leave of absence, but in October will continue to provide support with our church database, the HUB. Connie McNeill will continue to provide leadership in the areas of Discipleship, Equipping and Administration. She can also help if you are not sure where to go for answers. THANK YOU, CAROL WEIRICH What happens when you say to the Lord, “use me.” God will. Just ask Carol Weirich. She and Les came to this congregation about three years ago. Carol’s professional background was in banking, so when we needed some interim help in our administrative area, Carol was willing to come out of retirement (shortterm, she said several times!) and help us with some of the financial pieces. God has used Carol during this time of office transition to keep operations running smoothly. We are deeply grateful for Carol’s service. She joins the ranks of those who love Jesus and serve Him through His church. Thank you, Carol!

MISSIONS YOUTH MENTOR OPPORTUNITY AT SCHUMACHER ELEMENTARY The start of the 2016-2017 school year is fast approaching and the School Connections Team is inviting us to consider becoming Youth Mentors to support the students at Lillian Schumacher Elementary. Last year Second Baptist had nine individuals become Youth Mentors, and this year our goal is to add another 10! Mentoring has been shown to benefit children in many ways. Here’s just a few: · Better attitude toward school · Improved interpersonal relationships · Improved academic performance · Increased graduation rates · Improved attendance · Enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence · Improved behavior at home and school Mentors can choose from a number of in-school activities in which to participate. You might have lunch with a student, tutor, read, or simply be a good friend who listens. This can be done one-on-one with a child or with children in a small group. Interested persons need to complete a Youth Mentor application, available in the 2BC Welcome Center Desk. Completed applications should be mailed to Colleen Jones at Liberty Public Schools Central Office. All applicants undergo a background screening, attend an interview and a short training session. If you have questions about the program, contact Colleen Jones, coordinator of Liberty’s mentoring program, at cjones@liberty.k12.mo.us., or Debbie Lane, facilitator of the School Connections Team, at debbielane71861@gmail.com. HEARTLAND QUILTERS RETURN TO ROMANIA Return donations to the Welcome Center by Aug. 28 A group of women named the Heartland Quilters (as we're all from Missouri) have been invited to return to Romania for a second year! We leave Aug. 30. Last year's focus was teaching Roma women, commonly known as "Gypsies," to make quality quilted products such as small quilts and table runners. Many of our students were single parents and/or victims of domestic abuse. Profits from products sold would be used to supplement their household income. The picture at right shows one of four completed projects by each of the women. This year, the focus will be on more advanced quilting skills, including appliqué. Our students last year numbered 14; this year our numbers will be closer to 25! Because of the generosity of this church and other CBF-Missouri congregations, we were able to take 14 LARGE suitcases of fabric to Bucharest last year. The majority of that fabric remains in Romania and will be used for additional projects that will be taught this year. Roxann Brenton will be the appliqué instructor and will teach the women to make appliquéd Christmas stockings. Many of you have asked how you can help. Here's how: Donation of holiday prints for the Christmas stockings. Appliqué pieces are generally smaller than quilt squares so do not require as much yardage. Remnants work well. Yardages of prints in navy blue, brown and/or gold for nativity table runners. Goody bags were made for each of the new quilters last year and were a big hit. The five instructors donated all the items last year, but this year we could have twice as many. Please consider sample-size donations of nail polish, lipsticks and/or gloss, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, combs, brushes, perfumes, etc. Pray for safe travel, especially in these troubled times, and even deeper connections with the women. Pray for their acceptance of Jesus Christ in their hearts and homes. If you have any questions, contact Roxann @ 781-4430 or galofliberty@yahoo.com.
