Our 2BC Cooking Teams are back for Wednesday night meals. How does home cooking sound? Five teams of Second Baptist talent (no awards have been won YET, but that could change quickly!) have been assembled to rotate the preparation of our meal. It’s going to be good, so join if you can on Wednesday nights for a time of great food and fellowship before moving to the evening formation options.

Second Sessions

Adult Wednesday Evening 4-week sessions +GaPs We’ve restructured our adult offerings into the new Second Sessions. These sessions are in blocks of four-week offerings with a “GaP” (Gather and Pause) week in between, where we’ll all get together for one special session before we begin again. Here is a sneak peek at the first two GaP and Session blocks.

Parenting Kiddos

with Gwen Phillips | Room 304-305 This four-week session is designed for parents of young children (preschool-elementary). We’ll discuss raising children grounded in Biblical principles. We’ll share strategies for focusing on relevance and grace at each stage of your child’s journey. The goal of this session is really just to help parents take ownership of the spiritual leadership in your home. It takes a village!

Room 505 We’ve had an amazing summer of SEND INIATIVE trips, and we will be sharing each one this fall in what we are calling SEND | REMIX. Each team will spend a Wednesday session sharing photos,

Second Baptist Church has a strong tradition of music, and our adult music groups rehearses on Wednesday evenings.

SANCTUARY HANDBELL CHOIR (Adults) The Handbell choirs lead in worship by playing preludes, offertories, and accompanying the congregation and various choral groups.The Sanctuary Handbell Choir rehearses on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. in the Music Suite, Room 501.

For those families participating in Wednesday activities and music, there is childcare available for our littlest friends from 6:30–8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings.

Our focus for younger children on Wednesday evening missions education includes the active care for others and Jesus’ example of humbly serving those around us. The kiddos engage in hands-on activities, learn about the Biblical foundation for missions, and enjoy fellowship with one another.

About 25,000 people attend the Liberty Fall Festival each year. Previously Grace and Peace, we have participated by allowing our 2BC parking lot to be used for handicap parking Friday and Saturday, and we supply drivers for a 2BC Courtesy Shuttle golf cart for those needing a ride to the festival or to their vehicle. This has been extremely helpful for many people. The Service of Hope is a ministry of the Second Baptist Church Stephen Ministry.

Calling all Bakers!!

We’re having an Old Fashion Pie Baking Contest at our Shindig on September 14. We are looking for contestants who believe they make the best pies at Second Baptist or want to compete for fun. All pies will be served after the judging to the audience for tasting as well! (FYI: Pie crust must be made from scratch. The filling must be homemade and it needs to be a fruit pie of some sort.) Did you know? “Year End” for Catalyst is October 31! By Rich Groves, Chairman of the Financial Stewardship Committee

Knowing that the end of the “Catalyst year” (actually, it has been TWO years since we began) is October 31 is critically important for the full success of the Catalyst initiative. The Catalyst journey the dedicated members of this church committed to almost two years ago has seen many accomplishments because of the selfless sacrificial giving by so many members. We have watched—or participated in—numerous successful SEND projects in the Kansas City area, in other parts of the United States, and onto other continents because of the funds committed to the Catalyst initiative. We have also seen and benefitted from needed improvements to the church facility. Unfortunately, some of the planned activities have been put on hold because not all the pledged amounts have been fulfilled, in spite of a Here comes . . .

robust beginning during the 4th quarter of 2012. It would be easy to assume that we have until the end of the year (December 31) to fulfill those commitments just as we do for most of the charitable contributions we make. But for the Catalyst program, the “end of the year” is October 31. Here are some of the Catalyst initiatives “on hold”: • Rehabbing the chapel and pre-school entrances that are leaking and need aesthetic improvements • College room renovation to accommodate an expanding student ministry by knocking out small classrooms which are now being used as storage plus the cost of painting and carpeting. • Wiring and mounting of new cameras in the Sanctuary. The cameras are already purchased but will not be usable without this feature. • Upgrading of the Sanctuary projector and screens

Catalyst 2.0

• New wireless microphones and assistive listening packs for the Sanctuary • Possible failure to complete the repayment of the Renovation Loan, a big item we had hoped to pay off completely by this fall. Everything possible is being done to avoid reducing the SEND money. If that must be cut, we will have some huge deficits in student ministry trips and other outreach trips that had already been committed. The real message in all this is that if you are one of those waiting for a time closer to the end of the year to fulfill your Catalyst commitment, please make your fulfillment early enough to allow a successful Oct. 31 conclusion of the Catalyst program. Let’s finish strong! Thank you.

sabbatical report by Mike Lassiter “My sabbatical this summer was enjoyable beyond expectation.” Spending four weeks in Bridger, South Dakota with Byron and Toni Buffalo, people from the community, and church mission teams who share a commitment to the Lakota, was a joy. And meeting and understanding the hearts of those who are opposing the Keystone XL pipeline was an enriching experience.

Children’s Ministry 2014-15 A Message from Gwen . . . August 17 is the official beginning of our new year in Bible Study, missions, and music for the preschool/children’s ministry! Our theme for the new year is LIVE OUT LOUD. God has given us the gift of life that will never end. Our children’s choir introduced this thought to us back in the spring as they presented the musical, God of this City. From the song, “Live Out Loud”, the children sang: And if God’s love is burning in our hearts, we’re gonna glow. There’s just no way to keep it in. This is life we’ve been given, made to be lived out…so Live out loud! My hope for this year is that our children will want to “wake the neighbors, get the word out, crank up the music, climb a mountain and shout. This is life we’ve been given, made to be lived out.” On Sunday, August 17, pre-K through fifth grade will be welcomed by their new leaders in their new classrooms. At 10:15 a..m., we will all meet together in the chapel for a special time together, then end our Bible Study time back in our rooms.

The preschool classes will continue to meet the needs of our little ones as the kiddos move on through the different rooms as they grow and develop.

Preschool Childcare during 11:00 a.m. worship Extended Session is the childcare available for preschoolers during this worship service each Sunday. (August 20 through May 3) While Sunday morning Bible Study primarily engages us in the Biblical stories of our faith, on Wednesdays during the school year, children are engaged in the doing and living of the Christian faith. Our focus on missions education includes the active care for others and Jesus’ example of humbly serving those around us. During Missions, children participate in hands-on activities, recognize a Biblical foundation for missions, and enjoy fellowship with one another. Immacolata Manor Service Events

Throughout the semester, the youth group will be doing various service projects with Immacolata Manor: special events, yard work, helping with the thrift store. The youth group is going to lead a church-wide partnership with Immacolata Manor and will use this semester to get to know the organization better in order to lead the church. We will also be partnering by praying for the residents and the manor itself. The first Saturday in October is the annual Rebuilding Together Clay County work day. This year 33 homes were chosen for fixing, repairing or upgrading. Second Baptist will again join with other churches, organizations and businesses to help accomplish the work. All skill levels and abilities are welcome for this local one day mission project.

Comfort Drive for South Dakota September 15–October 12 We will again be traveling to South Dakota in October with blankets and coats for the Lakota people. We give the comfort items to several Lakota pastors of the Dakota Association who distribute the items as needed. We have found that gently used heavier winter coats and blankets are the best. In addition to the blankets and coats, we will also collect new athletic socks which is a request from Arlys, the Bridger Community Health Worker. Many of the people, mainly the elderly, don’t go out as much during the long stretches of cold and often run out of propane for heat and wear socks to help keep warm in their homes. Black bins will be made available at the west, south and east doors for the items you bring.

CHILDCARE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for MOPS

The 2BC Mothers of Preschoolers group is in need of volunteers to care for children (infant through age 5) at church during MOPS meetings. This gives busy moms a much-needed break, and they are so appreciative! What is Stephen Ministry?

Stephen Ministry is the one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place at 2BC. Stephen Ministry congregations equip and empower lay caregivers— called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.

Who are Stephen Leaders?

Stephen Leaders are the pastors, other church staff, and lay leaders who direct Stephen Ministry in the congregation. They are equipped and inspired to serve in this role at a one-week Leader’s Training Course. Stephen Leaders have gifts and skills in areas such as leadership, teaching, and organizing people—along with a heart for caring ministry.

As part of our Advent 2015 celebration, Second Baptist will sponsor a Christmas Store in December for the Liberty community. During October and November, we will ask you to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate. How does it work? Families with children 16 years of age and younger will be referred to the Christmas Store by some of the helping ministries in Liberty and by school personnel. Referred families will come to the Christmas Store for the opportunity to purchase the toys at a greatly reduced price.
