Answer the question: 'What Do I Believe?'

Sundays | 9:30 a.m. | Social Room-West Side

Knowing what we believe seems like it should be an easy, black-and-white process. However, we all eventually realize that it is far more nuanced and complicated than we thought. This class, led by Tyler Tankersley, will seek to wrestle with ten big questions in Christian faith, not to offer answers, but to present multiple perspectives using scripture, tradition and reason. We'll use material from the book Across the Spectrum by Gregory Boyd.

Sacred Rhythms Study Starts Next Sunday Sundays starting Aug. 30 | 9:30 a.m. | Room 611

David Fulk will lead this study of Sacred Rhythms: Arranging Our Lives for Spiritual Transformation by Ruth Haley Barton. This study takes us more deeply into understanding seven key spiritual disciplines along with practical ideas for weaving them into everyday life. Spiritual disciplines open us to God’s transforming love and the changes that only God can bring about in our lives. Barton is a writer, spiritual director and pastoral staff member.

Come join us if you haven’t found a place to be part of Sunday morning yet. Small group Bible studies and spiritual formation groups are important to our being disciples of Jesus.

Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS)

Fill out the application at 2bcliberty.org/mops MOPS@2BC is gearing up for a great year. A MOPS morning includes two hours of connection and community for mothers with children birth through kindergarten. Motherhood can be isolating and overwhelming, and MOPS provides space for community to be developed. Questions? Contact Kristin Wooldridge at 913-220-8294.

Educators’ Reboot

Stephen Ministry

James 5:16 tells us that the prayers of people who are "living right with God" are powerful and effective. In the final few weeks of our intentional season of renewal and prayer we invite you to pray about our congregation’s Stephen Ministry. A season of renewal does not automatically eliminate all troubles, pain and disappointments from our lives.

Composer Weekend Sept. 13

For the last 11 years, 2BC has hosted a Composer Weekend. This year we are doing something a little bit different. We have two wonderful composers based in Kansas City who will share a Wednesday night Sanctuary Choir rehearsal and both Sunday morning worship services with us. Here is the first:

Missions education includes the active care for others and Jesus’ example of humbly serving those around us. The kids engage in hands-on activities, learn about the Biblical foundation for missions, and enjoy fellowship with one another.

by Gordon Kingsley, on the occasion of the church’s 150th anniversary. She is a nationallyrecognized composer of choral music and spent 25 years as a Director of Music for various churches.

Junto Community Group for Single Adults

Junto is Spanish for together. Junto Community Group is an opportunity for single adults to get together to enjoy Kansas City area restaurants and entertainment offerings. It’s a simple concept, Junto would choose a venue such as a Chiefs game, a Kauffman Center concert, a special exhibit at the Nelson to enjoy together and then dine at a restaurant of their choosing.

We'll also talk about upcoming events such as our Fall Retreat and our monthly communitybuilding events this semester. There will also be a chance to sign up to volunteer with the ministry and for meal preparation.

Formation (Grades 6-8) 6:15-7:15p | Student Ministry Room We focus on the growth and development of our whole-selves by intentionally engaging our faith life, interacting with others in ordinary life, and the integration of key spiritual practices. And we have lots of fun while we do it!

Watershed (Grades 9-12) 6:30-7:30p | Missionary House (429 Wilson St.) Watershed is a time when important change happens. We’ll discuss, challenge, and consider what a Christ-centered life feels like, looks like, and how it manifests in our daily lives.

MID-WEEK MUSIC 2BC has a strong tradition of music, and our adult (18+) music groups rehearse on Wednesday nights.To join, come to a rehearsal!

Sanctuary Choir 7:15–8:35 p.m. | Music Suite, Rm 501 The Sanctuary Choir offers a focal point for many adults (ages 18+) wishing to find a place of ministry at Second Baptist Church.

Beginning Handbells: Grades 4-5 6-6:30 p.m. | Rm 502 | Led by Allan Aunspaugh Sanctuary Handbell Choir (Starts 9/9) 6:15 p.m. | Music Suite, Rm 501.

Handbell choirs lead in worship by playing preludes and offertories and accompanying the congregation and various choral groups.

Activity and Event Fee Policy

At the July Church Council meeting, an Activity and Event Fee Policy was adopted.

The policy is designed to help ministry event planners work through the cost of an event and to have the necessary funds to support their event and the work of the church. Along with the policy, a tool to help determine costs for events was also presented to the Council. That tool is available from Linda Jones in the church office if you need it.The policy reads as follows: Activity and Event Fee Policy Adopted by Church Council:July 19, 2015 It shall be the policy of Second Baptist Church that all trips and/or activities planned by any group in the church will require that all fees be paid in full by individuals participating in said event before they are allowed to participate in the event. (e.g.: camps, mission trips, senior trip, float trips, ski trips, Disciple NOW or any similar activity).

It is not the desire of Second Baptist Church to prevent anyone from participating in these events and individuals who need assistance can request from the trip or event leader, a full or partial scholarship to allow their participation.
