Greetings Friend,

We want you to know that you are welcomed at Second Baptist Church! How can we help you feel comfortable here?

At Second Baptist, we are committed to meaningful Christ-centered community, whole-life faith, and to being a transforming missional presence in our world. In order to be and do those things, one of the things we do is study the scripture in small groups.

On any given Sunday morning, we offer Bible studies for the youngest of children through the grandest of adults. One of the rich assets of our church is that we are a multi-generation church. In fact, we have five generations with a few special members who approach one hundred years of age! We value the breadth of our shared experience, history and wisdom.

We have small groups that meet every Sunday and enjoy socials and fellowship in addition to their study time. We also have small groups that form for a short-term study on Sunday morning. Hosts in the Welcome Center (near the coffee just inside the south door) will know what and where those studies are.

There are many things in this world that want to inform how we live, where we find truth and helps for marriages, parenting and living as a single adult. Information comes over airwaves, through computer screens, across televisions, and in the pages of popular fiction. As Christians, we live in this world, but we are to be formed by the things of God. This passage in Isaiah is straightforward: “When people tell you, ‘Try out the fortunetellers. Consult the spiritualists. Why not tap into the spirit-world, get in touch with the dead?’ Tell them, ‘No, we’re going to study the Scriptures.’ ” (Isaiah 8:19 The Message) At Second, our model is Jesus, who was thoroughly familiar with the scriptures.

Here at Second, we are ordinary people who try to make right decisions, want our children to be healthy and happy, some go to jobs they love and some to jobs they want to move on from. We pray for each other for life events that bring joy and grief. We are pilgrims on a journey to become more like Jesus as we study and live and serve together.

What is Discipleship?

W

e believe being disciples of Jesus Christ shapes a radically different culture.

Whole-life discipleship is a unique culture, and it has been since Jesus first began teaching and modeling this Way of whole-life faith. For early believers, this meant radically different beliefs and behaviors about love and service, Jews and Gentiles, males and females, slaves and free. Jesus still calls us to this radically different way to live. Together, we are constantly learning about it here at Second Baptist.

Discipleship is learned through a variety of experiences, including Bible study. Along with the church in Rome, we are reminded: “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life — your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life — and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”

(Romans 12:2, The Message) This is why we offer Bible study and worship for children, students and adults. It is why we emphasize engagement in missions and other areas of service. It is why we offer gatherings of the whole community in worship and fellowship and of small community groups. We want a vibrant relationship with God, we want to be the hands and feet of Christ to others, and we want to bring to earth the reign of God.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY (birth through 5th grade)

Sunday morning Bible Study in Children’s Ministry is a weekly adventure using the Bible as our guide! Leaders are ready to greet your child at the door and spend the hour introducing the Bible and some of its most significant stories. We want children to become familiar with God, learn to know Jesus and know that they are loved.

STUDENT MINISTRY

(6th-12th grades; College) Our Sunday morning Student Ministry Bible Studies offer students in Middle School, High School, and College a chance to learn more about what discipleship means, talk about what’s going on in their lives and ultimately grow in their faith. The Bible Studies are divided into age groups, with each group being guided by dedicated leaders who teach and mentor the students, provide support in any way they can and lend a listening ear. There is also a light breakfast served every Sunday. Sunday morning Bible Studies are a great way for students to be introduced to Student Ministries in a comfortable and relaxed learning environment.

These featured offerings for adults meet for a limited time for study on a specific topic or for a specific purpose. If you haven’t found an ongoing group yet, these groups would be a great entry point. No registration is necessary unless otherwise indicated.

What Do I Believe? Pt.1|Aug. 30-Oct. 25 | Social Room | led by Tyler Tankersley We’ll study Boyd & Eddy’s Across The Spectrum as it explores the basic issues of evangelical theology in a contemporary world. It is relevant, helpful and will seed your spiritual growth. A second part of the class will be offered in the spring.

Connections | 2 Sessions: Sept. 27-Oct. 25 ; April 3-May 1 | Oak Room | led by Greg Duncan Connections will help participants become better acquainted with Second Baptist and find individual ways they can serve. Many new friendships across generations have formed in this small group experience.

Grief | Oct. 4-25 | Social Room|led by Chaplain Steve Smith We will use a support group model to explore one’s own grief or to be better equipped to help someone who is grieving. For healthy human beings, there is no escaping the experience of grief. This would be a wonderful opportunity to bring a friend from outside the church who could benefit from this small group.

Not A Silent Night, Mary Looks Back to Bethlehem | Nov. 29- Dec. 20 |Social Room Not A Silent Night, Mary Looks Back to Bethlehem by Adam Hamilton is an Advent study that begins the first Sunday of Advent. “Imagine Jesus from Mary’s point of view — proud of her son, in awe of his gifts and mission, guided by love for him as a person and so much more.” Hamilton begins with Mary at the crucifixion and Resurrection but travels back in time and ends at the beginning with the baby in a manger.

What Do I Believe? Pt. 2 |Jan. 10-Feb. 28 | Social Room | led by Tyler Tankersley Again using Boyd & Eddy’s Across The Spectrum, the class explores the basic issues of evangelical theology in a contemporary world. It is relevant, helpful and will seed your spiritual growth. You do not have to have attended part 1.

Time with N. T. Wright | Begins Jan. 10 ; ongoing with brief breaks | Rm 413 | led by Tana Clement Various books from N. T. Wright will be studied. Wright is one of the world’s top biblical scholars, a prolific author, and the Bishop of Durham for the Church of England. Though a scholar, his writing is easily accessible.

Forgiveness, A Lenten Study | Feb. 21 through Easter morning, March 27 | Social Room Marjorie Thompson, author of Forgiveness, A Lenten Study and also well known for Soul Feast, says “Forgiveness is the healing stream flowing out from the crucified Christ over a world that does not know how desperately it needs the healing.” We need forgiveness and we need to learn to forgive.

Searching for Sunday | April 3-24 |Social Room | led by Kristin Wooldridge “For a generation that has largely said, ‘count me out,’ church represents a complicated relationship of both longing and apathy. There’s a history there — a past full of confusion and hurt, but a past that often is impossible to abandon. In Searching for Sunday, Rachel Held Evans exposes her own thorny relationship with the church, articulating the concerns, frustrations, and hopes of many of her peers. Through a series of stories told around the church’s sacraments—baptism, confession, and communion, among others—Evans offers the beginnings of a road map back to church and the resurrection that awaits when we are willing to give up and begin again.”

Ongoing Classes

These adult classes meet on an ongoing basis. If you’d like to try a class, please feel free to attend on any Sunday morning.

Young Adults Class Leader: Ben Lassiter Room: 415 This group study focuses on Biblical topics, themes, and specific scripture with an emphasis on personal life journey.

The Potter’s Wheel Leaders: Amy Duncan & Carolyn Fulk Room: 611 Our class name reflects our belief that we are all still in formation. We base our discussion and exploration on the texts appointed by the Christian Lectionary. The study is led by a monthly rotation of class members who facilitate learning through open participation. Our time together symbolizes the wheel, where God uses the study of his word to further shape and mold us. Once or twice each year we follow a special book or topical study. Most of our members are in their 30’s, 40’s or 50’s, but adults of any age are welcome. We are a warm and supportive group, and we also meet outside class a few times each year for social gatherings.

Foundational Doctrines Leader: Roger Driskill Room: Church Library This group study focuses on Biblical topics, themes, and specific scripture with an emphasis on personal ministry and missions.

Winepress Leader: Jeff Langford Room: 117 (Social Room E) The Winepress Class with examine biblical texts, pose questions, and explore cultural and personal viewpoints as we seek to connect more deeply with Christ. Each week, we’ll try to apply what we’ve learned from the scriptures and each other. All are welcome, no matter your age, church background, or level of biblical knowledge.

The Lankford Class Leader: Tom Lankford Room: 411 A verse by verse study of the Bible books in the context of the book being studied and the whole of sacred scripture, with an emphasis on distinguishing ontological and transformational concepts hidden in the apparent literary devices employed by the author and inspired by the Spirit.

The Seekers Class Leader: Neita Geilker Room: 503 The Seekers Class seeks to grow in understanding and applying scripture, increasing our outreach to others, and building community. We use the Baptists Today Bible study material. Most of us are middle-aged couples and singles. We begin with the Bible study material, including plenty of— sometimes vigorous—discussion. At 10:30, we begin a time of sharing.

Milton Horne’s Class Leader: Milton Horne Room: 410 This group consists of persons interested in Christian faith as it encounters contemporary culture. We read books on topics ranging from theology to economics, from comparative religion to science, with a view to processing such ideas through the eyes of informed faith. The class is discussion based and encourages thoughtful participation.

Truth Seekers Leaders: Vonda Gourley Room: 303 The Truth Seekers Class is made up of about a dozen senior ladies - 100 years old or less. We use the Smith and Helwys’ Formation curriculum. However, we are happy to have questions, new ideas, and information any member may contribute. Our chief concern is caring for each other, but our projects reach our whole church and beyond. We believe we are never too old to question, test, and analyze our faith.

The Tanner Class Leader: Blane Baker Room: 305-306 The Tanner Class is an engaged group that enjoys discussion and dialogue. We use the Baptists Today material to provide background for each lesson. Conversations then emerge, and we generally explore how bible study impacts our daily lives. The group is composed mostly of retired persons. We have 2-3 social gatherings each year.

Men’s Bible Study Leader: John Howell Room: 308 The Men’s Bible Study uses the Smyth and Helwys’ Bible study material in a lecture style for men.

Ongoing Adult Study Groups

Koinonia Class Leader: Greg Greason Room: 414 The Koinonia Class is composed mostly of adults over 50. The class period begins with announcements, sharing concerns, and prayer. The Bible study, based on Smith and Helwys’ Formations curriculum, begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. This study includes active participation of the class in discussion with the goal of deeper spiritual understanding and service to others.
