SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH

WEEKLY Edition December 14, 2014

TODAY | 12:00 p.m. | Social Room

Special Called Church Conference Dec. 21 | 12:00 p.m. | Social Room The Personnel Committee (with the approval of the Church Council) is recommending that we divide the Discipleship and Student Pastor position into two full-time pastoral roles. To that end—and pending your approval—we hope to have both positions filled in 2015.

Connie McNeill

In the short term, we have a significant opportunity to fill one of these positions now. So, we are quite pleased to recommend Connie McNeill as the Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Equipping.

Please do not miss an informal Q&A session today in the Social Room immediately following the 11:00 a.m. service. A light lunch will be provided while we get to know Connie better. She and the Personnel Committee will be on hand to answer questions about her calling, experience, pastoral role, as well as the process.

Recommended Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Equipping

On Sunday, December 21, there will be a Special Called Church Conference to vote on calling Connie to fill the Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Equipping position and to approve the selection of the Student Pastor Search Committee. That meeting will take place immediately after the 11:00 a.m. worship service in the Social Room.

Gloria

by John Rutter | presented by the Sanctuary Choir Sunday, December 21 as part of the 11:00 am worship service

The Sanctuary Choir presents this exciting work as a bridge between Advent and Christmas. Choir members rightfully describe the work as frenzied joy, reminiscent of a Judean hillside 2000 years ago that was suddenly filled with the sights and sounds of the heavenly host announcing the birth of Christ. Gloria in excelsis deo: Glory to God in the Highest!

Turning Christmas Upside Down

Why are we turning Christmas Upside Down?

To remind everyone that, with a few tweaks to your thinking about how you celebrate Christmas, you can promote just and fair practices in your gift giving, support small, entrepreneurial businesses, advocate for those who are marginalized or vulnerable, and support in a healthier and more dignified way those who might be struggling this year to provide Christmas for their families. Have a family discussion to see if any of these tweaks would work for you this Christmas.

Level Playing Field Commerce | We believe in supporting

small farmers or co-ops, good and humane labor practices around the world, and areas where the people are using their own abilities and resources to move from poverty and vulnerability. Action step: Purchase items at 2BC Fair Trade Shop through Dec. 21.

Using E-Commerce | When you make purchases online through

the 2BC Living Zoe portal (2bcliberty.org/livingzoe), a percentage of items purchased online supports ministries engaged directly with abandoned children, those being rescued from sex trafficking, or escaping from being forced child soldiers. In addition, the Second Baptist Christmas Store receives part of the percentage to purchase gifts. Action step: Navigate to your favorite shopping website by first visiting the 2BC Living Zoe page: 2bcliberty.org/livingzoe and clicking “Shop For Our Cause.” There’s no additional cost!

When Zechariah entered the temple that day, he entered as a life shaped by hope-filled waiting. He was a waiting Israelite who entered holding the hope of Israel’s long Advent wait - that the Lord would show up and restore them again to their ancient glory. Zechariah was a waiting Israelite.

Luke 1:5-25, 67-79

Good News! God can meet our waiting desires...
