Meditation He did not wait till the world was ready, till men and nations were at peace. He came when the Heavens were unsteady, and prisoners cried out for release. He did not wait for the perfect time. He came when the need was deep and great. He dined with sinners in all their grime, turned water into wine. He did not wait till hearts were pure. In joy he came to a tarnished world of sin and doubt. To a world like ours, of anguished shame he came, and his Light would not go out. He came to a world which did not mesh, to heal its tangles, shield its scorn. In the mystery of the Word made Flesh the Maker of the stars was born. We cannot wait till the world is sane to raise our songs with joyful voice, for to share our grief, to touch our pain, He came with Love: Rejoice! Rejoice! — First Coming by Madeleine L’Engle _________________________________ WE LOVE CHILDREN! Your entire family is welcome here! “Blessed Be the God of Israel”

FOREST GREEN

Blessed be the God of Israel, the ever-living Lord, who comes in pow’r to save His own, His people, Israel. For Israel He raises us Salvation’s tow’r on high in David’s house, who reigned as king and servant of the Lord. Through holy prophets did He speak His word in days of old; that He would save us from our foes and all who bear us ill. To our ancestors did He give His covenant of love; so with us all He keeps His word in love that knows no end. Of old He gave His solemn oath to Father Abraham: His seed a mighty race should be, and blessed forevermore. He vowed to set His people free from fear of ev’ry foe; That we might serve Him all our days in goodness, love, and peace. O tiny Child, Your name shall be the prophet of the Lord; The way of God You shall prepare to make His coming known. You shall proclaim to Israel salvation’s dawning day, when God shall wipe away all sins in His redeeming love. The rising Sun shall shine on us to bring the light of day to all who sit in darkest night and shadow of the grave. Our footsteps God shall safely guide to walk the ways of peace. His name forevermore be blessed who lives and loves and saves. Words: James Quinn SJ

ABOUT THE COVER ART

BY JENNIFER MAZI HUFFMAN Every so often, when the light is right and I happen to be holding a camera, I catch what I call holy moments. It happens like this: time slows, someone sets aside everything in order to love and honor the person or people right in front of them. (click) My work is pretty simple, then: notice how holy the world is and push a button. This photograph shows Dr. Jennifer Dilts examining a 15-month old Haitian girl. Due to extreme malnourishment, Michaelove weighed only 11 pounds during the exam, which is the size of an average two-month-old American baby. Jen’s translator Phan-Phan helps her connect with the baby’s grandmother while the light swims around all of them like the Old Testament Holy Spirit. That light was what caught my attention that moment, that day, and the rest of it had nothing to do with me and everything to do with what happens when someone turns faith into a way of life, by truly seeing and serving the person or people right in front of them as if they were the honored guests of Psalm 113. Getting Connected Each Sunday in the Welcome Center (just inside the Kansas Street entrance on Level 1), our Connections Team is waiting to help you get “connected.” This may include finding a Bible study class, showing you where children and student ministries meet, or sharing the days’ activities and schedule. You may also choose simply to enjoy a cup of coffee at the Welcome Center’s coffee bar and get to know others at Second.
