A Celebration of Generosity 10.05.14

Welcome Guests If you are a first-time guest, please complete a guest card from a pew pocket or Friendship Register and drop it in the offering plate so that we may acknowledge your visit and get acquainted with you. We are glad you have joined us for worship today. ________________________ Meditations Think of Christ; think of grace. He came into the world as a “rich” person, however he exchanged all of his richness for a form of poverty. “He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:8-9) Genuine Christianity compels the true Christian to become a generous person because the central act of our faith is an act of generosity. The generous person knows and understands that giving does not begin until there is a sacrifice in alignment with the sacrifice of Christ. - Gordon MacDonald Reflect on an example from your life when you have given generously. What impact did this have on both you and the recipient?

Moving toward God’s

dream.

Looking back over the first twenty four months of Catalyst, here are a few more items to celebrate that we didn’t share in the video. • Second Baptist Church gave $15,000 for a bunkhouse at the Bridger UCC Church on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota…the funds were released in early spring 2014, and the $15,000 was used to apply for matching grants by our partner, UCC pastor Byron Buffalo. Currently the $15,000 has become $60,000 with these grants, and the bunkhouse has become a multipurpose addition to the church instead of a stand-alone building. Construction is set to begin in May of 2015.

Eight churches have already committed to help with the project: FBC Augusta, GA; FBC Middletown, KY; Yorkville UCC Church; St Dunstan’s Episcopal, Houston, TX; West Bearden Baptist, Knoxville, TN; and our 2BC/Tryst Falls/Englewood group from the KC Metro.

• Second Baptist Church gave $15,000 for a school in Dinise, Haiti. In partnership with Josue Octeus of the Evangelical Church of Haiti, 2BC helped to build a school in the mountainous area of northern Haiti. The funds were released in the summer of 2013, and about 130 children began school in the building of six classrooms and an office in the fall of 2013. The Missions Committee has also sent some additional money for doors on the concrete block building, and has helped with the teachers’ and administrator’s salaries. The school was meeting under a torn tarp before the new building was built.

• We committed $7,000 locally to Hillcrest Hope to build a commons area/playground for the apartment complex operated by Hillcrest. The complex is built on a hillside, and there was no place for children to play or families to gather. The parking lot above the area was stabilized with a retaining wall and landscaped. A swing set, grassy area, and bench were added. Hillcrest also applied for a couple of grants to complete all the work. The funds were released in early 2013, and the area completed in June 2013. • $3,000 was provided to complete our 20th water well in Nigeria. The Mission Committee began water wells with former 2BC member and Nigerian Baptist Convention Missions coordinator Israel Obieje in 2004. The funds were released in 2013, and the well was completed in the same year. • $5,000 was designated for local emergency response efforts. While we didn’t anticipate or have any emergencies in 2013 or 2014, the Missions Committee will keep this in sight if needed and use funds from the mission endowment if needed.

Getting Connected Each Sunday in the Welcome Center (just inside the Kansas Street entrance on Level 1), our Connections Team is waiting to help you get “connected.” This may include finding a Bible study class, showing you where children and student ministries meet, or sharing the days’ activities and schedule. You may also choose simply to enjoy a cup of coffee at the Welcome Center’s coffee bar and get to know others at Second.
