Second Baptist Church
O Come,
Thou Wisdom
First Sunday of Advent November 30, 2014
Welcome Guests If you are a first-time guest, please complete a guest card from a pew pocket or Friendship Register and drop it in the offering plate so that we may acknowledge your visit and get acquainted with you. We are glad you have joined us for worship today. ________________________ Meditation There are many family or Church traditions that we associate with the Advent and Christmas seasons. One of these ancient traditions is the O Antiphons: seven responses, or antiphons, that are sung or recited in Advent, just prior to Christmas. These antiphons are based on Isaiah’s prophecies and refer to the different ancient titles given to the Messiah: O O O O O O O
Sapientia (O Wisdom) See Isaiah 11:2–3; 28:29. Adonai (O Lord) See Isaiah 11:4–5; 33:22. Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse) See Isaiah 1:1; 11:10. Clavis David (O Key of David) See Isaiah 9:6; 22:22. Oriens (O Rising Sun) See Isaiah 9:1. Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations) See Isaiah 9:5; 2:4. Emmanuel (God with us) See Isaiah 7:14.
We can bring these responses into our own prayers, as simple reminders of the one whose coming we are joyfully expecting, as introductions to our own prayers of praise of Jesus, or as words of thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness throughout the ages and our lives. Regardless of how you incorporate these ancient words into your Advent prayer life, let them speak to you, and maybe they will become part of your family traditions. On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry announces that the Lord is nigh; awake and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings. Alleluia. Then cleansed be every life from sin; make straight the way for God within, and let us all our hearts prepare for Christ to come and enter there. Alleluia. We hail you as our Savior, Lord, our refuge and our great reward; without your grace we waste away like flow’rs that wither and decay. Alleluia. All praise to you, eternal Son, whose advent has freedom won; with whom the Father we adore and Holy Spirit evermore. Alleluia. Words: Charles Coffin, 1736
