Meditation Fire of Advent Advent, like its cousin Lent, is a season for prayer and reformation of our hearts. Since it comes at winter time, fire is a fitting sign to help us celebrate Advent. If Christ is to come more fully into our lives this Christmas, if God is to become really incarnate for us, then fire will have to be present in our prayer. Our worship and devotion will have to stoke the kind of fire in our souls that can truly change our hearts. Ours is a great responsibility not to waste this Advent time. – Edward Hays, A Pilgrim’s Almanac, p. 187

Gloria

by John Rutter John Rutter is the preeminent living British composer. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music. He has also coedited various choral anthologies including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975-79 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers, a professional chamber choir primarily dedicated to recording. He now divides his time between composition and conducting, and has guest-conducted or lectured at many concert halls, universities, churches, music festivals, and conferences in Europe, Scandinavia, and North America. His “Gloria” is one of his most performed compositions in both the performance hall and sanctuary as part of Divine Worship. It was commissioned in 1974 by The Voices of Mel Olson on the occasion of the composer’s first visit to the United States.

About Gloria Movement I Have you ever wondered what it was like on that Judean hillside when the angels announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds? Rutter paints that picture with percussion and brass layering note upon note to a rhythmic and dissonant fanfare, followed by the angel’s stunning words: “Gloria in excelsis Deo: Glory to God in the highest!” The choir makes this announcement first in unison, and then in rich harmonies, expressing the joyful, yet frightening angelic pronouncement. The mood, but not the tempo, changes as the angels announce “and on earth, peace (pax) to men of good will.” In alternating voices, we hear: “We praise You” (Laudamus te), “We bless You” (Benedicimus te), “We worship You” (Adoramus te), and “We glorify You” (Glorificamus te). A unison choir then sings “For Your great glory” (propter magnam gloriam tuam). Evoking the frenzy of the multitude of angels in the sky, the choir then begins a four-part fugue on the “Gloria”. The movement ends as it began: the brass and organ layering note upon note, punctuating the triumphal announcement.

5

Movement II This longest movement takes an introspective turn, with extended instrumental passages (first organ alone, and later accompanied by a mournful brass choir). After a triumphal passage recognizing the “King of Heaven,” (Domine Deus, Rex caelestis) the music subsides and darkens to describe Jesus as the one who takes away “the sins of the world,” and who sits at the right hand of the Father. A women’s trio pleads: “Have mercy on us” and “Receive our prayer” (Miserere nobis. Suscipe deprectionem nostram.) The choir’s response is an additional plea to “have mercy on us.” Movement III Without a pause, the third movement begins with another jubilant fanfare from the brass, preparing the choir to sing God’s praises: “For you alone are holy, You alone are Lord, Jesus Christ.” The vigorous rhythms are now characterized by more profound syncopations - joy that evokes a physical response. Rutter enlivens the music further by alternately writing call-and-response and contrapuntal textures for the chorus. The strong and flowing “Amen” is balanced against pulsing “With the Holy Spirit in the glory of the Father.” Just prior to the end of the piece, Rutter brings us back to the main theme: “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” which is punctuated by pealing fanfares in a joyous frenzy that is bound to leave the musicians and worshipers breathless.

Advent 2014

This Advent our attention will be focused specifically by one of the Songs crafted to help us remember the holy one who came into our lives so many years ago: “O Come, O Come Emanuel. The words of this hymn are based on a piece of Advent liturgy known as the O Antiphons. These are seven sayings that offer us seven names for the Messiah. Learn more at 2bcliberty.org/advent _________________________________________
