Educación superior para indocumentados: Una inversión en calidad Donna M. Carroll Presidente Dominican University La importancia de la educación superior como catalizador de la movilidad social está bien documentada: cuanto mayor es el título obtenido, mejor es la perspectiva de un trabajo; pero para el estudiante indocumentado, la educación superior significa mucho más.

Un poco menos del 10% de los estudiantes universitarios de Dominican University son indocumentados: receptores de DACA, Dreamers. Estos estudiantes tienen un impulso para aprender y un “apego a la realidad” que rivaliza con los más inteligentes, porque tienen hambre de oportunidades, como Rosie Hernández-Barba, una estudiante de biología con su mira en la escuela de medicina.

Al principio me sorprendió ver cuántos de nuestros Dreamers se especializan en artes liberales tradicionales, en comparación con los negocios, por ejemplo; pero luego llegué a comprender su hambre de sabiduría y belleza, como Jacqueline Romo, que estudió arte y ahora es una becada del DONNA M. Higher education for the undocumented: An investment in quality Donna M. Carroll President, Dominican University The importance of higher education as a catalyst for social mobility is well documented — the higher the degree, the better the prospect of a job; but for the undocumented student, higher education is about so much more.

Just under 10% of the undergraduates at Dominican University are undocumented — DACA recipients, Dreamers. These students have a drive to learn and a “stick-to-itness” that rival the smartest — because they hunger for opportunity, like Rosie Hernández-Barba, a biology major with her eye on medical school.

I was surprised initially to see how many of our Dreamers major in the traditional liberal arts — versus business, as an example; but then I came to understand their hunger for wisdom and beauty, like Jacqueline Romo who studied art and is now an Oscar Romero Scholar at Catholic Theological Union.

Many Dominican DACA students aspire to be teachers, social workers, and community organizers, which is not surprising, because they hunger for impact and to give back to their neighborhoods, like Paulina Rosales who is beginning her career as a special education teacher in the Villa Park Public Schools.

How do I know all this? Because a president knows students who speak out, which is the case with many of our undocumented students — because they also hunger for justice, like Carlos Benitez, who is the current President of Dominican’s immigrant student coalition.

I am often asked why Dominican University is so deeply committed to the education of undocumented students. There are over 200 Catholic universities in the United States, only 26 of which are Hispanic-Serving, and of those 26, only two, including Dominican, are highly ranked academically and for the upward mobility of their students.

There is always a place for high achieving, intelligent, socially conscious students at Dominican University. Providing higher education for the undocumented is the right thing to do — and a good investment in quality.

El 1 de julio de 2020, el antiguo Elmhurst College se convirtió oficialmente en la Universidad de Elmhurst, marcando el comienzo de una nueva era para la institución de educación superior de casi 150 años de antigüedad.

On July 1, 2020, the former Elmhurst College officially became Elmhurst University, ushering in a new era for the nearly 150-year-old higher-education institution.

The university name more accurately reflects Elmhurst’s educational profile as a comprehensive higher education institution, while opening the door to opportunities for new programs and partnerships.

Founded in 1871, Elmhurst University currently offers more than 70 undergraduate programs of study and 16 graduate programs. Elmhurst also ranks consistently among the top colleges and universities in the Midwest, according to U.S. News & World Report, Money magazine and other organizations.

Although Elmhurst’s official name has changed, its identity, core values and emphasis on liberal arts education and professional preparation remain the same. So does Elmhurst’s longtime commitment to making college accessible to first-generation students. More than one-third of Elmhurst’s undergraduate students are the first in their families to go to college.

Tecnologías que estamos utilizando (y utilizaremos) para combatir pandemias

Carlos Morales Fronteras de la Noticia - YCAI Global unque estamos lejos de ganarla batalla, los primeros países en enfrentarse al reto de la pandemia del coronavirus comienzan a notar ya los efectos positivos de las medidas tomadas. Poco a poco se abren las tiendas, se recuperan los restaurantes y los ciudadanos retoman sus actividades profesionales con las medidas de seguridad necesarias. Ahora, sin embargo, los expertos apuntan al riesgo de con%arse excesivamente y cantar victoria. Será impresicindible mantener tecnologías de detección y seguimiento de afectados, especialmente ante la posibilidad de nuevos repuntes. Por ejemplo, en China, cuna de numerosas tecnologías de lucha contra la pandemia, se está utilizando ya un nuevo tipo de casco que permte identi%car rápidamente a personas con síntomas de enfermedad.

Este no es más que uno de las muchos proyectos tecnológicos que hemos visto a lo largo de estos meses en la lucha contra la COVID-19. Aquí tienes algunos de los que nos han parecido más interesantes.

Una de las aplicaciones de robótica más interesantes con las que nos hemos topado ha sido esta máquina que recorre los hospitales desinfectando las habitaciones y espacios comunes por medio de rayos ultravioleta. Al disponer de un sistema de inteligencia arti%cial puede concentrarse en zonas de riesgo como lavabos y picaportes. Además, si detecta una persona en las inmediaciones se desconecta de forma automática. Un equipo de investigadores español anunció también el desarrollo de un detector de coronavirus portátil. El dispositivo, planteado como una especie de lector de códigos de barras, analiza las super%cies por medio de imagen multiespectral, que interpreta utilizando algoritmos de inteligencia arti%cial. Aún se encuentra en fase de prototipado, ya que se requiere un gran número de muestras para que el software aprenda a distinguir la presencia de virus, pero seguro que será de gran utilidad para la próxima pandemia.

La detección temprana se ha convertido en un de los pilares en la lucha contra la pandemia. ', nuevamente, la inteligencia arti%cial tiene mucho que decir. En este caso se está utilizando un software de IA avanzado que reconoce patrones en la voz asociados a la infección vírica. Este es otro proyecto que aún se encuentra en fase de recolección de datos, pero podría abrir la puerta a una identi%cación preliminar de afectados con una simple llamada telefónica.

Estudiantes de Elgin Community College, entusiasmados por lograr el éxito Elgin Community College students are fired up for success En Elgin Community College, estudiantes como Jeanette Silva Haro están trabajando fuerte para alcanzar sus sueños y están recibiendo la educación práctica que les ayudará a avanzar.

Después de obtener sus certificados de Bombero de Operaciones Básicas (BOF) y Técnica de Emergencias Médicas (EMT-B), Haro ha avanzado a más de la mitad del programa de Ciencias y Seguridad contra Incendios, ya que su objetivo es obtener un título asociado.

“Quiero completar mi AAS (título de Asociado en Ciencias Aplicadas) en ECC, inscribirme en un programa de paramédicos y eventualmente convertirme en enfermera de la sala de emergencias”, dijo Haro.

La misión en Elgin Community College es mejorar vidas a través del aprendizaje y proporcionar el más alto nivel de excelencia en sus programas académicos y de servicios estudiantiles. En ECC, muchos estudiantes comienzan su trayectoria hacia lograr un título o aprenden habilidades que tienen alta demanda, mientras se entrenan para una nueva carrera profesional.

At Elgin Community College, students like Jeanette Silva Haro are working towards their dreams and receiving the hands-on education to help them move forward.

After earning her Basic Operations Firefighter (BOF) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) certificates, Haro is more than halfway through the Fire Science and Safety program as she aims to earn her Associate degree.

“I want to complete my AAS [Associate of Applied Science degree] at ECC, enroll in a paramedic program, and eventually become an emergency room nurse,” said Haro.

The mission at Elgin Community College is to improve lives through learning and provide the highest level of excellence in academic programs and student services. At ECC, many students start their degree path or learn in-demand skills while training for a new career.

“I want to be a role model for girls and young women, and the Hispanic community as I am Hispanic,” said Haro.

“I believe that if you haven’t been exposed to a career like firefighting, you wouldn’t know how to pursue it. I hope that young girls can see me and know they can achieve anything they work for, and know that any dream is possible. Sometimes, all you need to see is someone’s spark to start your inner flame.”

Obtenga su título durante el COVID-19: Los recursos virtuales de JJC pueden ayudarlo a tener éxito

Con la mayoría de las clases de Joliet Junior College (JJC) cambiadas a un formato predominantemente en línea para el semestre de otoño para prevenir el contagio del COVID-19, hay un aumento de recursos virtuales disponibles para los estudiantes Latinx, especialmente aquellos que son indocumentados o están aprendiendo inglés como segundo idioma.

Como una institución al servicio de los hispanos, quienes componen casi el 30 por ciento de la población estudiantil de JJC, es excepcionalmente importante para este colegio universitario satisfacer las necesidades de este grupo de estudiantes.

El objetivo de la Oficina de Asuntos Estudiantiles Multiculturales (OMSA) de JJC siempre ha sido ayudar al éxito de los estudiantes Latinx y otros estudiantes subrepresentados. Aunque el COVID-19 ha presentado varios desafíos, el personal de OMSA de JJC ha encontrado muchas maneras de continuar apoyando a los estudiantes. “Estamos trabajando duro para ayudar a los estudiantes Latinx a participar en nuestro entorno virtual, especialmente aquellos con inglés limitado”, dijo Michelle Román-García, directora de asuntos estudiantiles multiculturales de JJC. “Es clave que comiencen lo antes posible para que puedan obtener toda la ayuda que necesiten para navegar por la universidad”.

JJC es la mejor opción para los estudiantes Latinx, no solo porque pueden obtener ayuda en cada paso del proceso universitario, sino también porque JJC es asequible y ofrece muchas áreas de estudio que conducen a empleos de alta demanda que solo requieren un título asociado, incluida la ecografía médica de diagnóstico, diseño web, HVAC y más.

JJC facilita que los estudiantes encuentren un campo que les apasione, ya sea que su objetivo sea ingresar a la fuerza laboral rápidamente o transferirse sin problemas a una universidad de cuatro años. JJC’s virtual resources can help you succeed With most Joliet Junior College classes switching to a predominately online format for the fall semester due to COVID-19 precautions, an increase of virtual resources are available for Latinx students, especially those who are undocumented or are learning English as a second language.

As a Hispanic serving institution, JJC’s Latinx student population is at nearly 30 percent, making this group of students’ needs exceptionally important to JJC. The goal of JJC’s Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA) has always been to help Latinx and other underrepresented students succeed. Even though COVID-19 has presented several challenges, JJC’s OMSA staff has found many ways to continue supporting students. From customized web advising appointments to guide students into registering for the classes right for them to newly created tutorial videos with voiceovers in Spanish, it’s important for Latinx students to know that they can accomplish the same things from the safety of their homes as they would have been able to do on campus.

“We are working hard to help Latinx students engage in our virtual environment, especially those with limited English,” said Michelle Roman-Garcia, JJC’s Multicultural Student Affairs Director. “It’s key for them to start as early as possible so we can get them all the help they need to navigate college.”

JJC is the best choice for Latinx students not only because they can get help through every step of the college process, but also because JJC is affordable and offers many areas of study that lead to high paying, in-demand jobs that only require an associate degree, including diagnostic medical sonography, web design, HVAC and more. JJC makes it easy for students to find a field they’re passionate about, whether their goal is to get into the workforce quickly or to transfer smoothly to a four-year school. Students can choose to complete one class per semester or finish their degree in as little as 18 months.

Last spring, for example, JJC Pathway Coach Veronica Mascote, along with JJC alums, hosted a workshop on Facebook Live in Spanish to educate students and their parents about applying for scholarships and information about the RISE Act, an Illinois law passed in 2019 that allows eligible undocumented students and transgender students to complete the FAFSA. Even though JJC’s fall semester will be predominately online, students will still have the opportunity to join clubs, meet other students and get involved. JJC’s most popular club, Latinos Unidos, continues to meet virtually and has taken advantage of these video meetings by inviting guest speakers from as far as Mexico.

JJC’s peer mentoring program will also be available to students in the fall. The program pairs new students with experienced peers who can give advice about studying and student life, in addition to being a personal guide as they begin their journey at JJC. JJC’s fall semester begins Aug. 17, with flex start options on Aug. 31, Sept. 14 and Oct. 12.

POR QUÉ TRUMP NO PUEDE REFORMAR EL SISTEMA MIGRATORIO POR DECRETO Y SIN EL CONGRESO Abogados, activistas y políticos de ambos partidos dudan de la sorpresiva oferta del presidente y advierten que el sistema de inmigración vigente desde 1965 no puede ser cambiado a golpe de decretos, sino debe hacerlo el Congreso por medio de una ley.

Janine Trainor Fronteras de la Notiica - EFE El anuncio hecho por Donald Trump el viernes pasado durante una entrevista en la que aseguró que aprobará una reforma migratoria por medio de una orden ejecutiva para crear un nuevo sistema basado en “méritos” y ofrecería una vía a la ciudadanía para los dreamers, generó preocupaciones y críticas.

Abogados, políticos y activistas coindicen en que el presidente no puede cambiar por medio de un decreto el sistema migratorio vigente desde 1965, porque se trata de una competencia exclusiva del Congreso ya que las leyes solo pueden ser cambiadas por actos legislativos.

“No puede hacerlo de esa manera”, dice la abogada Lilia Velásquez, profesora adjunta de la facultad de leyes de la Universidad de California, en San Diego. “Pero no podemos con$ar en la palabra del presidente”, advierte.

Agrega que el mandatario, en uso de su poder ejecutivo, “tiene la facultad de emitir un decreto para continuar DACA (Acción Ejecutiva de 2012), pero sería mas sensato dejar la orden de (Barack) Obama y permitir que el programa continúe. A menos que quiera que la orden lleve su nombre, porque siempre reclama el crédito por sus buenas acciones”.

Pero en cuanto a cambiar el sistema migratorio por otro basado en méritos, una idea que lanzó desde inicios de su mandato en 2017, Velásquez indica que “el Congreso es el único poder que puede aprobar la residencia permanente y, subsecuentemente, que quienes reciban la green card (tarjeta verde) puedan luego solicitar la ciudadanía”.

“Lo que puede hacer el presidente es proponer una

ley de legalización para los dreamers, presentarla a las dos cámaras del Congreso para su posible aprobación y, si lo hacen, enviar el proyecto aprobado al escritorio del presidente para que la promulgue”, precisó.

En la entrevista, en mandatario dijo que estaba haciéndose “cargo de DACA” y que el programa “va a estar bien”, pero no explicó mayores detalles.

Luego dijo que en las próximas semanas “voy a $rmar una gran orden ejecutiva migratoria” en la que incluiría el programa.

También dijo que la Corte Suprema le había dado “poder” para ello y que se trataría de “una gran ley por méritos y va a incluir DACA y la gente va a estar muy contenta”.

Fuentes demócratas consultadas dijeron que el presidente no puede cambiar el sistema de inmigración por medio de una orden ejecutiva. Y que si trata e hacerlo será demandado de inmediato ante los tribunales de justicia.

Por su parte, fuentes republicanas que pidieron mantener sus identidades bajo reserva, indicaron que el presidente no puede hacer lo mismo que el partido le cuestionó al expresidente Barack Obama en 2012, cuando lo acusaron de haber cambiado una parte de la Ley de Inmigración sin la autorización del Congreso al promulgar DACA. “Sería una traición a la base que lo puso en la Casa Blanca, indicaron.

La incredulidad de los activistas se fundamenta en tres años y medo de ataques continuos por parte del presidente a la Comunidad Inmigrante y el desarrollo de una dura política de inmigración de tolerancia cero impuesta a golpe de órdenes ejecutivas y reglamentos, que incluso golpea la inmiogración legal.

El anuncio, sin embargo, no solo apunta a un

cambio de reglamento, sino a la suplantación de un sistema por medio de un decreto. “Un presidente no puede cambiar la ley de inmigración a través de una orden ejecutiva”, advierte el profesor Stephen Yale-Loehr, de la práctica de inmigración de la escuela de leyes de la Universidad de Cornell, Nueva York.

Para León Fresco, exasesor del demócrata Charles Schumer (Nueva York), líder de la minoría demócrata del Senado, existe una probable manera de dar a ciertos dreamers una vía para legalizar sus permanencias en Estados Unidos. “Por medio de un perdón (paroll) autorizado por el presidente”, señala.

“Bene$ciaría a ciertos soñadores que ingresaron con ciertas visas a Estados Unidos, expiraron los permisos y se quedaron indocumentados”, indicó.

“Ellos podrían, por ejemplo, contraer matrimonio con un ciudadano estadounidense que luego sometería una petición familiar para obtener la green card (tarjeta verde)”.

Si embargo, Fresco dice que no hay probabilidades que el presidente tome esta ruta porque iría en contra de los argumentos utilizados por los republicanos para cuestionar el programa creado por el expresidente Obama en 2012.

“Hay dos grupos o categorías de dreamers, unos que entraron sin papeles o otros que entraron con visa. Pero dentro del segundo grupo hay quienes no pueden ajustar sus estados de permanencia porque las visas con las que ingresaron no se los permite”, precisó.

Pese a ello, “habría excepciones siempre y cuando el presidente les de una oportunidad para que lo hagan por medio de un perdón presidencial”, indicó.

“Pero es poco probable, no creo que el mandatario opte por esta vía”, apuntó.

Las Maldivas, Un Paraíso CARLOS MORALES

Las Islas Maldivas, un archipiélago situado en el Océano Índico, es uno de esos lugares a los que la mente vuela cuando necesita un descanso. Playas paradisiacas, arenas blancas, aguas transparentes, paisajes de ensueño.... todos los ingredientes necesarios para pasar unas vacaciones placenteras y alejadas de la rutina. También para disfrutar de su fauna. Sobre todo, de la marina.

Esta cuenta con una gran diversidad, ya que en sus aguas y arrecifes de coral viven desde peces globo hasta tiburones y barracudas, pasando por gran número de especies de peces y moluscos. Y, por qué no, de la práctica de deportes acuáticos. Por ejemplo, windsurf o esnórquel. Pero Maldivas, cuyo clima es tan suave que apenas se sale de unas máximas de entre 25 y 30 grados todo el año, ofrece mucho más a los viajeros que visitan el archipiélago.

Más allá de lo que aparece en las fotografías de playas de arena blanquísima, poco más se conoce del archipiélago de las Maldivas por estos lares. Lo primero, dónde está exactamente. Para hacerse una idea conviene tener en cuenta que está a unos 450 km de la India, hacia el sudoeste de Sri Lanka. Su territorio está organizado en 26 atolones y cuenta con poblaciones con muy pocos habitantes.

Maldivas es un país musulmán, por lo que conviene tomar algunas precauciones cuando se viaja a él. Por ejemplo, no está permitido utilizar bikini en todas sus playas. Únicamente en algunas a las que la población local no se acerca. Por tanto, conviene informarse antes de ir si queda cerca alguna de las denominadas por los locales “bikini beach” o “playa de bikini”.

Su ciudad más poblada Malé, es también la capital. Tiene algo más de 100.000 habitantes. Maldivas es uno de los países más pequeños en extensión de la zona. También de los que tienen una menor altitud sobre el nivel del mar, ya que es prácticamente llano.

A pesar de sus reducidas dimensiones, ofrece

muchos rincones de ensueño que visitar. Ya sea de manera independiente o mediante un viaje organizado a Maldivas. Como hemos comentado, la capital de las Islas Maldivas es Malé. Situa-da en una isla de la zona central del archipiélago, tiene poco más de 6 km cuadrados de extensión. En ellos residen unas 100.000 personas, en unas casas que están bastante apelo-tonadas. Aun así, la ciudad, la única del archipiélago que merece dicha consideración, tiene mucho encanto. Su edificio más destacado es la Mezquita del Viernes.

Pero lo más recomendable al visitar la ciudad es recorrer sus calles y mezclarse entre la gente. Y como no, visitar los mercados, los puntos más bulliciosos y vivos de las Islas Maldivas. Estos mercados son también una visita im-prescindible para comprar productos típicos del país. Aparte de la capital, los puntos más visitados por los turistas que viajan a las Islas Maldivas son tres de sus islas: Dhiffushi, Maafushi y Huraa. No son precisamente las más grandes, pero las distinguen sus playas paradisiacas, sus instalaciones y su cercanía a Malé. Dhifussi, la primera de ellas, está en el atolón norte de Malé, y es bastante pequeña.

Tiene únicamente 900 metros de largo por 200 de ancho. Además de diversos servicios esenciales, dispone de una de las playas más bellas de la zona. situada en su parte norte. Es un lugar pensado eminentemente para descansar, por lo que aparte de este arenal, no hay mucho que ver. Y es precisamente donde radica su atractivo, puesto que no ha sido explotada en exceso. Mientras Maafusi, algo más alejada de Malé, es una de las islas en las que más turistas de los que visitan las Islas Maldivas se alojan. A dos horas en ferry de la capital de Maldivas, sus playas de postal ofrecen amplias posibilidades para la realiza-ción de deportes acuáticos. También de salidas de pesca. Además, cuenta con numerosos restaurantes de gastronomía local.

Particularmente, en pescado aderezado con diversas verduras y frutas. Sin olvidarse, claro está, de las especias y el coco.

PASO enseña a las familias Latinx todos los detalles sobre Harper College

Cuando la madre de Lucía Ríos asistió a la universidad en México, las cosas eran decididamente diferentes del sistema educativo estadounidense. Ella quiere ayudar a su hija en su trayectoria en Harper College, por ejemplo, en cuanto a cómo obtener ayuda financiera, becas y servicios de apoyo, pero es difícil cuando su español es mucho mejor que su inglés.

El programa PASO, dijo Ríos, ha ayudado.

PASO, que significa Project Achievement – Surpassing Obstacles (Proyecto para Alcanzar Logros - Superando Obstáculos), ayuda a las familias de estudiantes Latinx a navegar a través de la universidad, dijo Alejandro Mendoza, asesor académico y líder del equipo de PASO. PASO teaches Latinx families about ins and outs of Harper College When Lucia Rios’ mother attended college in Mexico, things were decidedly different from the American educational system. She wants to help her daughter through her Harper College journey – the financial aid, scholarships and support services, for example – but it’s tough when your Spanish is so much better than your English.

PASO, Rios said, has helped.

PASO, which stands for Project Achievement – Surpassing Obstacles or Proyecto de Apoyo Superando Obstaculos, helps families of Latinx students navigate the college, said Alejandro Mendoza, an academic advisor and PASO team leader. The program sponsors events for families to highlight everything from financial aid to stress-related health and wellness tips.

It was born out of an initiative to recruit Latinx students, keep them engaged and persist in college, while providing families the resources necessary to help support them.

Rios and her family attended PASO’s kickoff event just before the global pandemic.

“Mom liked learning more about FAFSA,” Rios said, and “the way you study, that’s what affects your results in that class. There are a lot of families who are in need of help, and this gives them the opportunity to ask questions in a comfortable setting.”

The event also had food, music, a parent panel providing tips on how to best support students and a Q&A with faculty and advisors. Families could attend financial aid and scholarship workshops, where Harper staff helped them complete FAFSA forms. Early feedback for PASO has been overwhelmingly positive, Mendoza said.

“A program like PASO? It would have helped tremendously,” he said. “Families want to help but don’t have information or know how to support their students. A program like this will help them understand the journey their kids are on and how to support them.”

In addition to traditional face-to-face classes, Waubonsee offers online, hybrid, sync online, and flex courses. Each of these options gives you the flexibility you need to complete your education your way.

Sync online classes happen at regularly scheduled class times, but students complete the coursework entirely online through a video conference tool, like Zoom. LATINX? DON’T TINX SO!

Over the last 70 years, we’ve been identified by the U.S. government as “of Mexican origin,” “Spanish Mother Tongue,” “Spanish Surname,” “Spanish speaking,” “Latino,” and “Hispanic.” During the 2010 Census, my cousin, a Mexican, called me to ask, “primo, what am I?” After all these labels, any confusion over what to call ourselves should be understandable. The only identifier that has stuck is Hispanic.

About 10-15 years ago, a poll was done to see if we preferred to be called Hispanic (the government’s preferred label), Latino, or by our own national origin. The results found that most preferred to be identified by their national origin – Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, and so forth. We understandablyliked our own national origin, but it confused the hell out of the media and people in general who were afraid to wrongly identify us by confusing Mexicans with Puerto Ricans, or Boricuas with Cubans, or Cubans with Dominicans, for example. So, Hispanic stuck and that’s been the case over the last 30-40 years.

Now here comes Latinx and more confusion. Is that pronounced Latinx or Latin X? One word or two? The media use Latin X. Who’s idea was this anyway? Millennials? I ask because hardly anybody identifies with it and even fewer people use it.

At least that’s what a recent poll by ThinkNow Research, a major California-based firm, found.

The poll found that 44% of us prefer Hispanic and 24% like Latino/Latina, which reflected previous findings by Gallup and Pew. Only 11% prefer the national origin idea. Fewer prefer to be hyphenated (7%), only 6% like American, and 5% identify as Chicano/Chicana. Interestingly only 2% identify with Latinx, so there you have it.

An overwhelming 97% identify with any label other than Latinx, and I’m with them. Why? We need unity around a strong identity, not more confusion.

Some people think Latinx usage may be a fad or maybe appeals to women and youth. But the poll found that only 3% of 18-34 year olds and 2% of 35-49 year olds identify with the term. By comparison, no one over 50 identifies with Latinx. As for gender, only 3% of women and 1% of men

WASHINGTON, DC – La División de Horas y Salarios del Departamento de Trabajo de los Estados Unidos (WHD, por siglas en inglés) anunció hoy el lanzamiento de una campaña publicitaria de gran alcance para recordarles a los trabajadores que la agencia está comprometida a garantizar sus derechos en el lugar de trabajo durante la pandemia de coronavirus y a garantizar que los empleadores reconozcan sus responsabilidades.

Los expertos alertan que el sedentarismo, la alteración en los horarios de sueño-vigilia, el uso de dispositivos electrónicos por largo tiempo y una alimentación de$ciente crean las condiciones idóneas para restar centímetros al crecimiento de los niños.

Tanto niños como adolescentes han tenido que cambiar drásticamente sus hábitos de vida, ya que dejaron de asistir a la escuela y disfrutar de los juegos al aire libre con sus amigos o compañeros.

Esa situación, aunada al estrés y la ansiedad que el encierro ocasiona en los menores, contribuye a frenar su crecimiento y desarrollo normales, advierte el Dr. Carlos Antillón Ferreira, especialista en Endocrinología pediátrica.

El especialista hizo un llamado a los padres de familia a poner más atención en el crecimiento de sus hijos y señaló que durante la cuarentena, este depende en parte importante de los hábitos que tengan.

“Como el crecimiento infantil es regulado por diversos factores, recomiendo a los padres vigilar que sus hijos mantengan buenos hábitos en cuanto a actividad física, alimentación y sueño” puntualizó.

La falta de actividad física frena el crecimiento normal de los niños. Se recomienda que los padres motiven a sus hijos a que hagan, por lo menos, entre 40 y 50 minutos de ejercicio al día. El ejercicio, además de estimular el crecimiento, es clave para una buena salud mental.

En estos días de cuarentena, es común ver a los niños sentados frente a dispositivos electrónicos, lo que les resta movilidad. El especialista recomienda el establecimiento de horarios para que los menores cumplan con sus tareas de manera regular.

El Dr. Antillón advirtió que la a$ción a los videojuegos altera los horarios de sueño de los niños y que esto puede restar centímetros en su crecimiento. Existe el mito de que si un niño se desvela con los videojuegos y va a dormir a la 1:00 o 2:00 a.m., su sueño será reparador si se levanta a las 11:00 a.m. o 12:00 p.m., lo cual es una creencia errónea.

“Mientras más horas pase el niño dedicado a los videojuegos u otros dispositivos electrónicos y se desvele en forma habitual, menos centímetros va a crecer, ya que el 70 por ciento de la hormona del crecimiento se libera entre las 10 de la noche y las 6 de la mañana, siempre y cuando los niños estén dormidos”.

“La dieta diaria de un niño debe incluir proteínas, carbohidratos y grasas de buena calidad, abundantes frutas y verduras. Es necesario evitar el consumo excesivo de grasas saturadas, azúcares, carbohidratos y alimentos procesados o industrializados, sobre todo en estos días de con$namiento, y siempre ir de la mano con las indicaciones del pediatra”.

El Dr. Antillón Ferreira explicó que, en un esquema de crecimiento normal, en estos tres meses de con$namiento los niños pudieron haber crecido 1.5 centímetros. En la adolescencia el ritmo de crecimiento habitualmente se acelera.

“Los padres pueden medir el crecimiento de sus hijos en algún muro de la casa, y cuando llegue el momento de regresar a la escuela, el crecimiento o la falta de él podrá ser comparable con el de sus compañeros y será más notable”.

AgeGuide Helps Feed Thousands of Older Adults Across Eight Counties LOMBARD, IL – AgeGuide, the Area Agency on Aging for Northeastern Illinois, has received 55,000 donated meals from FEMA to help feed older adults across their eight-county service area.

AgeGuide was fortunate to be connected to Joe Foley with Corporate Disk Company in McHenry by Carole Peters with United Way of Greater McHenry County. Mr. Foley agreed to not only take in the delivery of meals, but also store, box and ship the meals directly to the home delivered meal clients across the eight-counties.

Since the onset of the pandemic, AgeGuide has receive nearly 2,000 new referrals for home delivered meals. These shelf stable meals will help older adults who might not have access to meals during this time. Currently, any older adult, age 60 or older, who is temporarily home bound is eligible to receive a home delivered meal, regardless of income and assets. AgeGuide will also have additional meals to cover surplus clients that have accessed services because of the COVID-19 pandemic and will be able to offer meals to people in emergency situations.

“We cannot thank Corporate Disk Company enough for assisting us and providing so much support to AgeGuide and our home

delivered meals clients during this difficult time” said Marla Fronczak, Chief Executive Officer of AgeGuide. “Our older adults are most affected by this pandemic and many are afraid to leave the house. In addition to the regular home delivered meals they receive; these meals will ensure they have food on hand as well.”
