The center of Fridamania Mural helps mark Glen Ellyn as exhibit host
BY KATLYN SMITH
For Reflejos
Geoff Bevington doesn’t mind the interruptions. He’s painted about 150 murals, but this one is special. It’s his most personal. So when Metra commuters, Prairie Path users and students try to pull him aside from his unfolding work in downtown Glen Ellyn, Bevington is happy to talk about his inspiration and technique. “Art is a celebration, and I can tell you that all the people that are going by, whether they say something or not, they all smile,” Bevington says. It’s hard not to smile at the vibrant blue backdrop, the poppies, marigolds and gardenias, all the favorite flowers of Frida Kahlo, the Mexican icon surrounded by butterflies and crowned with roses in Bevington’s mural. At 28 feet wide and 17 feet tall, it’s the largest piece of outdoor public art he’s ever created in his career. But the scale has to match the anticipation. Next summer, Glen Ellyn will become the epicenter of Fridamania when College of DuPage opens a major Kahlo exhibit in June, a year later than originally scheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Bevington’s mural, gracing the north-facing outer wall of Olive ’n Vinnie’s along the Prairie Path, will make the first impression on the thousands of Frida fans expected to flock to the host town via the Metra system. As the son of a first-generation Mexican American born in Los Angeles, Bevington wants to do Kahlo justice. He has to capture that look in her eyes, that formidable stare in her self-portraits, that strength Kahlo expressed through pain and tragedy until her death at 47. “I want to make sure I get the eyebrows right, not too many,” Bevington said of her trademark unibrow. “That seems to be the biggest concern.” Bevington pitched the project to Diana Martinez, the director of the College of DuPage’s McAninch Arts Center, and Dawn Smith, the executive director of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce. Both championed his idea to promote an exhibit that will provide an economic boost and traffic to businesses recovering from coronavirus shutdowns. “We’re hoping that the mural itself will have legs to continue on and will be a beginning of additional artwork and murals in downtown Glen Ellyn,” Smith said. A 26-year resident of Glen Ellyn, Bevington has mostly painted murals across the country and France with themes about literacy or arts advocacy. But his Kahlo mu-

ral reflects the influence of his grandfather, John P. Delgadillo Sr., who migrated from Mexico to Texas in the early 1900s. Delgadillo worked as a professional designer and title artist in Hollywood. He lived near northeast Los Angeles and in retirement started a project encouraging gang members to paint murals instead of tagging walls. “His murals celebrated Mexican American art and culture and were reminiscent of those painted by Frida Kahlo’s husband, Diego Rivera,” Bevington wrote in his artist statement. “My grandfather has been the driving force behind my desire to create and share my artistic talents.” Bevington is using spray paint in a nod to his grandfather. He also enlisted Glenbard West High School and St. Petronille students to help him paint the background and celebrate an artistic coup for the College of DuPage. “To have this kind of be a starting point to get people excited about it, it’s an honor,” he said.

ECC gets $3.8M, 5-year grant to offer support for underrepresented students
Waukegan Park District Receives Illinois Arts Council Grant
Two U.S. Department of Education grants will keep Elgin Community College’s TRiO Student Support Services and Student Support Services/English as a Second Language programs funded for another five years. The two grants total $3.8 million in funding. Part of the college’s federal TRiO program, these services specifically assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities as they progress through the academic pipeline from middle school through postsecondary programs. ECC’s Student Support Services program has been funded by the U.S. Department of Education for more than 35 years, and the Student Support Services/English as a Second Language program has been funded for more than 10 years. The Student Support Services programs assist traditionally underrepresented students who are the first in their families to attend college and offer tutoring and other academic, financial literacy, and career development support for students, including those who are second language learners. “We’re very excited about the renewal of these grants. It demonstrates the confidence the U.S. Department of Education continues to have in ECC to provide these services for our students,” says Bruce Austin, Ed. D., associate dean of TRiO Programs. Austin says this allows the Student Support Services program to serve 365 students and the Student Support Services/ English as a Second Language program to serve 140 students each year. In addition to the Student Support Services program, ECC’s TRiO offers two Upward Bound programs, a college-prep program for high school students who are potential first-generation college students or low-income, and a Talent Search Transitions program, which provides academic, career, and financial counseling to middle to high school students to help them graduate from high school and continue onto postsecondary education.

Raising Fiscally Savvy Adults: Five Habits to Learn for School and Beyond

Life as a student looks very different this fall—as does the first day on the job for recent graduates. One way to help prepare young adults for whatever lies ahead is by teaching them basic financial skills during these transitional years. As a single mother of three, I’ve seen firsthand the importance of financial planning. Now, as my oldest prepares to become the first in our family to go to college – during a period of economic uncertainty, no less – I feel a tremendous responsibility to help him establish healthy financial habits that will set him up for a lifetime of success. Whether you’re sending your children off to school or preparing to keep them home longer than anticipated, we must take advantage of this time to help them develop sound financial habits and prepare for what lies ahead. Here are a few tips to help guide all young adults through the uncertainties ahead: Track your spending and create a plan. Getting in the habit of tracking expenses will help you identify excess spending and find areas to save. Put together a budget that tracks your expenses and update it regularly as your spending habits shift. As we’ve seen this year, financial situations can change rapidly, so the spending plan should reflect any changes to your lifestyle. Start saving and create an emergency fund. An emergency fund can provide peace of mind and act as a buffer
for unexpected expenses. One of the benefits of tracking your spending is that it will help you find money to save—even if it’s just $20 a month from old recurring subscriptions that you can cancel, the important thing is to start building your savings muscle. At Bank of America we have an account geared specifically for young adults called the Advantage SafeBalance checking account, which allows students to bank without the worry of overdraft or nonsufficient fund fees. Make savings automatic. With everything going on these days, at some point we’re all likely to forget about sticking to a savings plan. Consider scheduling automatic savings transfers so it’s one less thing on your to-do list. These reoccurring transfers are also a great way to build up an emergency fund—schedule auto-transfers for payday to pay yourself first and ensure you’re making progress toward your savings goal. Be smart with credit. When used responsibly, credit cards are a great way to manage expenses and build good credit, which can come in handy when signing a lease, for example. To use a credit card wisely, plan out purchases in advance, keep a close eye on your expenses to avoid overspending and strive to pay on time and in full. When possible, choose a credit card with rewards that match your existing spending habits. Use your spending tracker to see where you’re spending the most (groceries, online shopping) and do a little research to find out which credit card has the best rewards for that category. Tackle financial stress, head-on. Beingastudent is stressful enough under normal circumstances, but add in the financial stress of the coronavirus, and young adults can feel overwhelmed. Confront financial stress by focusing on the main sources of anxiety—maybe it’s paying off credit card debt or saving for future student loans.Set reasonable goalsto pursue in the short termand establish an easy to follow, monthly plan. We’re living through a difficult time, but we’re all working through it together. As young people prepare to go back to school or enter the workforce, having healthy financial habits can make all the difference. Regardless of what your young adult is planning next, take advantage of this time together to help them build the skills that will guide them toward a financially secure future.

Aurora Street Named in Honor of Trailblazing Latina Businesswoman AURORA, ILLINOIS - She was a Hispanic pioneer of Aurora who became a trailblazing entrepreneur, community advocate and a voice for Latinos from her near eastside home where she lived for more than six decades. The late Herminia Rodriguez Gasca was memorialized this weekend during a street dedication ceremony that was both special to her family and historic for Aurora as it marks the first time a Latina has been honored with such a distinction. “Herminia was a true pioneer of our community,” said Ward 2 Alderwoman Juany Garza who welcomed the family to the ceremony. “She gave so much to everyone and I am so happy to give something back to her for all of the community to see.” In honor of what would have been her 90th birthday on Monday, September 28, Aurora Mayor Richard C. Irvin proclaimed the day as ‘Herminia Rodriguez Gasca Memorial Day’ during the gather at the intersection of Superior and Root Streets where the 300 block of Superior was also dedicated in her. “As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Aurora, we shine a spotlight on leaders in the City of Lights,” said Aurora Mayor Richard C. her husband, Rodriguez Gasca joined the handful of Latino families living in Aurora in abandoned boxcars at the train station. For nearly five years, the young family worked daily to save money to buy a home. In 1954 that dream became a reality when the couple and their six children purchased their home at 318 Superior Street. As the family continued to grow, they
took in tenants to offer relief to families in need and to supplement their income over the next fifteen years. In 1969, Rodriguez Gasca divorced and became a single mother of 10 children. This pivotal point in her life encouraged her to become independent, learn to drive and find employment. She also found her passion for helping others in Aurora. Beginning in the early 1970s, she began interpreting for the growing number of families moving to Aurora from Mexico and established her first business in that industry, which expanded quickly. She traveled, sometimes daily, to immigration offices in Chicago to interpret for families and then for lawyers, doctors and judges in courtrooms. In Aurora, she literally became the voice for those who couldn’t speak English. While providing assistance to families, Rodriguez Gasca learned how to file income tax documents and launched her second family business in the community. By the mid-1980s, she had become an inspiring businesswoman, community advocate and the first point of contact for many Latinos in need of assistance. Administracion Trump impondrá nuevas restricciones a estudiantes y periodistas extranjeros
E

Schools decision Matrix to aid school official deciding learning models
WOODSTOCK — The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) has partnered with McHenry County school Superintendents to develop interim guidance that uses county-level health metrics to assist McHenry County school officials in evaluating transitions between virtual, hybrid or in-person learning models. While school officials and MCDH have a mutual desire for all students and staff to have a safe return to the classroom, it is important to note that there is currently no risk-free scenario or learning model that eliminates transmission from impacting schools. The McHenry County School Metrics are intended to be used in conjunction with the June 23, 2020 Part 3 – Transition Joint Guidance document developed by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). Before transitioning to an in-person learning model, schools are advised to first transition to hybrid learning. Additionally, it is recommended that schools remain in a learning model for at least 14 days with all thresholds met before transitioning to the next learning model. Thresholds used to help guide school officials are based on four metrics: COVID-19 incidence rate, the county’s test positivity, and whether COVID-19-like illness hospital admissions and new cases are increasing or decreasing. The transitions between the various learning models are recommendations based on the science to date to reduce COVID-19 transmission and community spread. However, it is possible for one school in a district to be in a different learning mode than another in the same district. Superintendent Scott Rowe of Huntley Community School District 158 stated, “The metrics are intended to assist school district leaders as one piece of their decision-making process. School districts throughout the county vary in enrollment, building features, operational structures, class sizes and other measures that impact
their decision making in response to the ongoing pandemic.” Schools are advised to continue virtual, or remote, instruction when: · Incidence rate exceeds 14 per 100,000 population per day · Test positivity exceeds 8% · COVID-19 like illness has an increase · Weekly case count has an increase Schools may consider switching to hybrid, or partial remote and partial in-person, instruction when: · Incidence rate is between 7 and 14 per 100,000 population per day · Test positivity is between 5 and 8% · COVID-19 like illness is stable or decreasing · Weekly case count is stable or decreasing Schools may consider resuming in-person instruction when: · Incidence rate is less than 7 per 100,000 population per day · Test positivity is less than 5% · COVID-19 like illness is stable or decreasing · Weekly case count is stable or decreasing If any two metrics cannot be sustained, the matrix recommends returning to the previous lower-risk learning model. The MCDH will advise on potential mitigation strategies should any one measure meet the threshold criteria for the previous learning model. Public Health Administrator, Melissa Adamson, said “MCDH and McHenry County school officials will continue to work together to ensure the safest possible learning environment for all students and staff during this unprecedented time.” MCDH expects to have McHenry County School Metrics Data available to the public before October 3. For additional information about the Interim Guidance for the McHenry County School Metrics, please visit http://bit.ly/ MCDHSchools.
