‘Occasional drug use killed her’: Mom shares story of daughter’s fatal opioid use BY RICK WEST
For Reflejos
An accidental drug overdose took the life of Jennifer Flory’s daughter, Alison, five years ago. Flory said Alison’s situation wasn’t what people might think, not that it matters to Flory what anyone thinks. “My daughter was a normal student. She was mostly happy. She never had a rock bottom or looked all strung out,” Flory said. “Occasional drug use killed her.” Flory is among those who have experienced a drug-related loss and will speak at the Ecker Center for Behavioral Health’s annual Overdose Awareness Day memorial at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the center’s Renz office in Elgin. Tuesday is International Overdose Awareness Day. Flory hopes talking about her daughter will help other families who feel there is a stigma attached to the overdose death of their loved one. “I don’t feel like I have anything to be ashamed of, because it could literally happen to anybody, and the parents who think it couldn’t are living in denial,” she said. Flory, who lives in Sugar Grove, said she knew her daughter had used marijuana in high school and had tried ecstasy at parties and concerts. Flory discouraged the drug use and had her daughter tested for drugs from time to time. “I never thought, ‘Oh my God, my child’s gonna be an addict and she might die.’ She’s just doing what everyone else is doing and it’s not ideal, but she’ll grow out of it,” Flory said. When Alison was 16, she broke up with her high school boyfriend. He told her he couldn’t live without her and soon after killed himself. The trauma and guilt were overwhelming for Alison. “Some friends offered her some pills to ease her pain,” Flory said. The pills turned out to be Vicodin, an opioid painkiller, and benzodiazepines, a type of prescription sedative. “I didn’t know anything,” Flory said. “I didn’t know what an opioid was, but that’s what started the addiction.” Alison stopped using drugs for a time and attended college, but stresses there would lead to her using again. In 2015, she was finally ready for real help and went to a drug-treatment center in Florida. Treatment initially went well until Alison fell into a trap known as patient brokering, her mother said. That’s where less-reputable treatment centers unethically lure patients away from their current treatment with inducements like more free time, better amenities and sometimes cash kickbacks from their insurance money. The patients go for the inducement and end up in centers with no real treatment or oversight. Alison cycled through a couple of centers. On Oct. 14, 2016, she died in a sober home in Florida after taking cocaine laced

with carfentanil, a synthetic opioid about 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl. Her story and the subsequent prosecution of the sober home owner made national news. “That’s the tragedy of it,” Jennifer Flory said. “Here’s a girl who grew up in the suburbs, started using some drugs and didn’t know how to stop and when she tried to get help, got sucked into this whole alternate reality (of patient brokering) that nobody knew existed.” Alison’s opioid overdose was part of a continuing national trend. Fatal drug overdoses increased for the 11th consecutive year in 2020, rising nearly 30% during the pandemic. Over 70% of the more than 93,000 deaths were caused by opioid overdoses. In Illinois, nearly 3,000 residents died from an opioid-related overdose in 2020, 32% higher than in 2019. “It’s a trend that just keeps getting worse as time goes on,” said Jim Brunetti, clinical director at the Ecker Center. “And it’s not just people abusing and misusing opioids, but it’s people dying from accidental overdoses, mostly because of fentanyl.” Brunetti said isolation and stress from the pandemic has exacerbated an already bad problem. The Ecker Center for Mental Health merged with Renz Addiction Counseling Center last year, becoming the Ecker Center for Behavioral Health. Brunetti said the center offers an outpatient program with counseling and a medication-assisted treatment program using Suboxone, which helps

eliminate drug withdrawal and cravings. The center also distributes and educates on the use of Narcan nasal spray, which can counteract the life-threatening effects of an opioid overdose. “As bad as things are, we’re doing our best to make sure we’re offering help in the community,” Brunetti said. He said Tuesday’s gathering is about healing.
JENNIFER FLORY lost her daughter, Alison, to an overdose after a battle with opioid addiction. Alison was a graduate of Kaneland High School and was seeking treatment in Florida in 2016 when she took cocaine laced with carfentanil and died.
“It’s a really meaningful event for many reasons,” he said. “We have people who have lost family members who come out, and it’s a good chance for them to feel connected to other people who have lost somebody.” Flory and others who have experienced the loss of a loved one to overdose will speak, as well as overdose survivors who are using their experience to help others. There will also be a candlelight vigil, a reading of names of people who died of an overdose and a walk around the Serenity Path, which will be adorned with memorial signs for people who died from overdoses. Overdose reversal training and free Narcan kits will be available. Similar events will be held Tuesday throughout the suburbs. A memorial hosted by Live4Lali and Northern Illinois Recovery Community Organization will take place at 5 p.m. at 202 S. Genesee St., Waukegan. Path to Recovery Foundation will host “Forever In Our Hearts” at 6 p.m. at the Naperville Grand Pavilion, 912 Honorary Sindt Memorial Court. Flory encourages people not to be ashamed and to share their stories, knowing that sharing hers has led to positive change. “Because I shared my story about Alison, a bill (Illinois HB 4949) was passed about patient brokering and targeting individuals in need of addiction services,” she said. “Now other people’s lives are protected as a result,” Flory said. “I know Alison would think that is really cool.”

The College of Lake County is planning a $50 million bond issue to fund projects that include converting the former Lowe’s store in Gurnee into an advanced technology center and building an outdoor sports complex. Proceeds from the bond issue, which is a form of borrowing, wouldn’t be in hand until late this year. But the sale by the Grayslake-based community college would be a milestone for two major initiatives. The proposal includes $20 million for the tech center; $10 million for an outdoor sports complex; and $9.3 million for deferred maintenance at its three campuses. It allow would the college to reimburse itself up to $10 million for spending in advance of the bond sale. College officials in September approved a resolution to buy the shuttered Lowe’s home improvement store situated on 14 acres at 7735 Grand Ave. In December, CLC officials announced the intent to create a center to teach skills to strengthen Lake County’s manufacturing workforce. CLC President Lori Suddick said growth opportunities are being limited because manufacturers can’t find skilled workers. “They only see that as continuing,” she said before the board vote. “So, it’s imperative we get that (advanced technology center) in place, and that’s included in this bond.”
The 142,000-square-foot center will allow CLC to expand manufacturing-focused programs. Welding, fabrication and industrial maintenance will be first. Computer numerical control, robotics and other programs are planned for future phases. According to the college, one in seven jobs in Lake County is in the manufacturing sector, but the number could be higher if workforce development kept pace with demand. The intent of the tech center is to close that gap. Construction is expected to begin next week and be complete by summer 2022. “The ATC is a huge investment which comes at a critical time.” said Kevin Considine, president and CEO of Lake County Partners, the county’s development arm. Local manufacturing growth has been strong, and there is increasing awareness of the value of careers in fields like automation and robotics, he added. An outdoor sports complex is the second-largest project on the list. “This college has not invested in its athletics facilities for a very long time,” Suddick said. “Getting defunct athletic facilities into shape that our athletes can actually play in non-flooded fields is an important aspect of that work.” The complex would include baseball and softball fields and tennis courts on the north side of the Grayslake campus along Washington Street. Design work has not started.

AN OUTDOOR sports complex at the College of Lake County’s main campus in Grayslake is on the list of projects to be funded with proceeds from a proposed $50 million bond issue.
More than $6.7 million of the bond funding would be used for deferred maintenance at the Grayslake campus and $2.6 million targeted for CLC’s Waukegan and Vernon Hills campuses. A public hearing on the bond issue is scheduled for Sept. 28. The board will consider a resolution to issue the bonds on Nov. 16.

When principals, teachers and counselors need solutions for bullying and dropouts, they call Dr. Robert Renteria BY FRAN BRIGGS
For Reflejos
UNITED STATES, August 30, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Students, teachers, counselors and superintendents across America have returned to school. While children will develop new skills in academics, many will also need social emotional learning (SEL) tools to help conquer challenges inside and outside the classroom. Civic leader, international best-selling author, and executive trainer,Dr. Robert Renteria says that among the challenges that compromise K- 12 education are bullying, gangs, drugs and violence. “Children, teenagers, and young adults are walking around lost in a culture of darkness. I decided to do something about it,” stated Renteria. “After working with CPS, principals, and teachers, I developed anacademic-based curriculum. It supports SEL by helping students improve their critical thinking skills.” Dr. Renteria delivers no-cost, high-impact SEL educational tools to superintendents of American middle schools and high schools. He is also accepting bookings for speaking during the 2021- 2023 school year to personally connect with students and staff. His comprehensive, From the Barrio bilingual book series is culturally relevant and inspires readers from all backgrounds. Most importantly, it has reduced the propensity for violence and altered student behavior for the better as reported by school administrators and
former violent offenders. “I am 22 years old and wanted to reach out to you. I just got released from jail for the third time. Heroin took my belongings, health, and family. I got so bad that I just lived for the drug. Reading your book makes me want to start over and really make my parents proud. Thank you for uplifting my spirits a bit. I read your book straight through the end. It’s going to be a really rough road ahead but it’s worth a try.” – Maricela

In 2021, Dr. Robert Renteria published qualitative and quantitative assessment reports outlining the economic, environmental and social impact of gun violence in communities. Researchers found that education was not only the common denominator in the data collected but a civic responsibility. “Both the academic-based and faith-inspired curriculums offer teaching tools to address current issues facing our youth and our communities,”
explained Dr. Renteria. “Barrio focuses its efforts on helping communities and providing an anti-violent initiative and education. Prevention eliminates the need for intervention.” “Dr. Robert Renteria’s curriculum changes the landscape of potentially dismal futures,” stated Fran Briggs, Publicist to Dr. Robert Renteria. “It inspires students and adults to stay focus and manage their emotions as they go to work on changing their current life’s
