Someone you should know

Griselda Sanchez began her career at McDonald’s working as a crew member in a locally owned restaurant in Wheeling in 1991. She was just 14 years old.

Griselda’s father wanted a better career for his daughter, and he secured a secretarial position working Monday through Friday. Griselda was an extremely hard worker and continued to work at McDonald’s part time on the weekends because she enjoyed the teamwork and the excitement of the fast-paced environment at McDonald’s.

At the time, there were not many Hispanic employees on the team, but Griselda did not let that intimidate her. When she turned 16, Griselda was able to work in the kitchen and she learned all the areas of the restaurant with enthusiasm and a passion for the business.

After leaving her secretarial position, Griselda became the opening manager of the restaurant and enjoyed the dynamic work environment and learning new things every day.

In 1996, while opening her restaurant each day, Griselda began to attend college with aspirations of becoming a nurse. At 19, Griselda placed her college education and her dreams of being in the medical field on hold while she welcomed her first daughter. McDonald’s offered Griselda a flexible schedule that allowed her to care for her child and continue a career path in Restaurant Management. Griselda welcomed her second daughter with her husband and continued to work at McDonald’s with the help of her husband and McDonald’s flexible scheduling.

Only two years later, and with two young daughters, Griselda had achieved the level of Assistant Manager and supported all 6 of the McDonald’s Restaurants within the organization. In her new position, Griselda struggled with the language barrier. She proactively sought out ESL classes and was able to strengthen her English language skills and communicate more effectively with her team.

By 2000, Griselda had gained sufficient experience in the restaurant and with her improved English language skills, she achieved the level of General Manager and was responsible for leading her own restaurant. In 2003 Griselda won the Ray Kroc Award, this awardrecognizes and rewards hardworking restaurant managers who deliver superior results in team performance and operational excellence. Griselda continued to learn more about the business and develop and train those around her which led to her promotion to Area Supervisor of a 5-store organization in 2016. In 2017, Griselda and her restaurant team joined Bear Family Restaurants where she continues to perform at an exceptional level and is always interested in continuing to grow and learn and support her peers and teams as they grow and learn.

Griselda often credits her grandmother Francisca for her success. Although her grandmother lived in Mexico and continues to live there, Griselda cherishes the time that she spent visiting her grandmother during the summer. During those times, Griselda enjoyed listening to her grandmother’s stories and being inspired by her grandmother’s kindness.

Griselda is incredibly proud of her Hispanic heritage and attributes her passion for volunteerism to her grandmother who has demonstrated an inspiring commitment to her community. Griselda recalls a recent visit

to her grandmother in Mexico when Griselda’s grandmother hurriedly brought her into the village. Griselda describes chasing after her 90-year-old grandmother as she rushed to arrive at her destination – a small home.

Within the home, there was a woman nearly the same age as Griselda’s grandmother.

The woman is nearly blind and was unable to administer her own eye drops to help her see. Griselda’s grandmother explained to her that she had been helping her friend put her eye drops in nearly every day despite her own age and challenges with mobility.

Griselda was so proud that her grandmother cares so much about those around her and takes responsibility for those who need help.

This experience inspired Griselda to become more involved in her own community. Griselda and her husband, Marcelo are both volunteers for the Wheeling Police Citizens Patrol and volunteer weekly in addition to being on call for some emergency traffic situations.

Soon after Griselda began working for the Bear Family, she was inspired by the organization’s commitment to Serve with Significance within our communities. The Bear Family is passionate about giving back and challenges their General Managers, Supervisors, Directors and Office Staff to volunteer 40 hours per year. Team members that volunteer are compensated for their time through additional time off or added pay at the end of the year. Griselda was ecstatic to learn that the Bear Family was supportive of her volunteerism and that the team she joined was just as excited and committed to their communities as she was! Griselda took time with each

of her team members to discover what they were passionate about and finding volunteering opportunities for each of them that they found fulfilling. Soon, Griselda began volunteering at an animal shelter. During her days off and every Thursday, she walks and feed the animals and cleans their cages. Eventually she was asked by the animal shelter if she could volunteer her time on Sundays as well, helping answer the phones in the afternoon.

In 2018 Griselda won the Bear Family Volunteer of the Year Award for her over 100 hours served in her community. Griselda continues to lead Bear Family Restaurants with her impressive 500 hours of lifetime volunteer service since she joined the Bear Family in 2017.

Griselda is a strong, compassionate, and caring woman and very much of this she attributes to her grandmother, Francisca for her influence and commitment to those around her. Griselda is proud to be part of a family that gives so much back and is truly passionate about working hard both in the restaurants and in the community saying that the most rewarding part of what she does is seeing the positive impact that her work has on her team at work, her neighbors in the community and the animals that she helps.

Awards highlight Reflejos and its commitment to Hispanic p communityy

The 39th annual National Association of Hispanic Publications conference and awards ceremony was held virtually once again this year, allowing for more than 250 members to share information from the comfort of their computer screens. This year’s convention honored the work of many publications done during 2020 and their ability to reach the many Hispanic communities that stretch from coast to coast, including Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

Reflejos was honored to receive nine of these awards recognizing its design, editorial content, marketing initiatives. It was also honored for the bilingual format Reflejos is so well known for.

The conference this year focused on bringing publications together to share many of the new ideas that blossomed during the pandemic in 2020. The focus also was to discuss the continuing growth nationally of this community, and how to improve the ways information is shared.

Reflejos was recognized once again with a Gold award for our outstanding College and Career guides, a lifestyle focus that has been so important to this community as many navigate opportunities for improving their lives.

Another Gold was awarded for the marketing business partnership Reflejos has garnered with PACE Transportation and the Reflejos buses seen in so many areas of neighboring communities.

Three Silver awards recognized Reflejos for its article highlighting a young entrepreneur, a marketing piece announcing our wins from 2019, and a general recognition as an outstanding bilingual publication.

Four Bronze awards honored our annual Health & Wellness editions, an article about a local Latino couple and their contributions to keeping the community healthy, an outstanding front page design and a column on diversity done for Reflejos by our sister publication, the Daily Herald.

“Once again we are honored with all of these amazing awards. During a very challenging year, Reflejos worked to make sure we were getting the most informative content to our readers, regarding health issues, employment opportunities and information to our small business owners, so they all could maintain and receive any help being made available,” said Linda Siete, manager of Reflejos.

“Being recognized by your peers for your work is what is most gratifying. We strive to honor many in our communities for their contributions as our focus for most of our 31 years serving the Hispanic community is to inform, inspire and educate through the written word,” she said. “Our bilingual formats also ensure every family member can share in our editions. We have always said, Spanish is the language of one’s identity and heritage, as English is the language of one’s progress and growth for many who are moving through this new and changing environment.

As the 2020 Census further illustrates the continuing growth of the Hispanic population, being a bilingual publication more easily welcomes advertisers into these communities, Siete said. “The growth per the Census showed the Hispanic population increased by 23% compared to general market (advertising) growth of only 7%.

For advertisers, 25% of all youth under the age of 18 is Latino. So, branding early is an avenue corporate entities are looking for as they build toward that consumer base of tomorrow,” she said.

Nearly 20 years ago, I earned my commercial driver’s license and began what I thought would be a short-term job. Little did I know that a lifelong career at the helm of a national transportation company was waiting for me just a few years down the road.

In 2007 I received an opportunity to purchase my own commercial vehicle and become an owner-operator. While I had nuts-and-bolts experience and industry knowledge under my belt, ownership was a very different challenge, as most small business owners will attest. But it didn’t take long for me to shift from the “employee” mindset and embrace the potential I saw in the business.

In the past 10 years Vysnia Global Transport has grown exponentially. Today, our Elk Grove operations support 21 full-time office staff and a fleet of more than 70 trucks. Despite the early effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced us to close our doors temporarily, the business has taken off in a way we could have never expected.

In the past two years our gross revenue has doubled, and we’ve just completed the purchase and renovation of a commercial property to house our growing team.

Throughout the growth, I’ve been intentional about building a strong network of business and financial advisers and weighing the costs and benefits of various financing options. In today’s economy, entrepreneurs are quick to release equity in favor of avoiding debt, but in my experience, executing on financing options that align with a company’s growth objectives is one of the smartest things a business owner can do.

That’s part of the reason I’ve done my business banking through a single financial institution since the very beginning. Bank of America’s small business advisers have guided me through the complex financial landscape, learning my business inside and out and recommending the right tools at the right time.

my business, and it can change yours, too. Here are a few of the financing decisions I’ve made over the past 15 years, and why they worked.

CONVENTIONAL TERM LOAN I believe in putting our best foot forward, which is why we rotate the trucks in our fleet frequently. It’s an expensive undertaking, and it’s not always feasible to pay cash up front before the truck is able to generate revenue.

We’ve been able to secure multiple, no- or low-down-payment conventional loans that enable us to maintain a current fleet and, when necessary, quickly increase the number of trucks on hand. For example, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when demand for home delivery services was at its peak, we needed additional trucks to meet customer demand, and we were able to accommodate.

SBA 7A LOAN FOR OWNER-OCCUPIED COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE In early 2020, I realized that renting warehouse space was no longer financially responsible, and I decided to purchase a commercial property. I applied for a conventional loan, but my small business adviser instead suggested an SBA 7A loan specifically designed or owner-occupied commercial properties. This year, I closed on a loan for a 250,000-square-foot warehouse in Elk Grove Village, which not only freed up tens of thousands of dollars in cash flow each month, but also gave the business another key asset.

REFINANCING EQUIPMENT LOANS Over the years, I’ve financed some fleet vehicles directly through dealerships. Recently, while doing an audit of the company’s outside debt with my banking adviser, I learned I was eligible for a better rate, better terms and current promotions. When I close, my rate will fall roughly three percentage points, and I’ll be able to redirect more than $100,000 annually into programs that and add value to our bottom line.

It’s a good example of the benefit of working with an adviser committed to proactively identifying opportunities for savings and efficiencies.

PAYCHECK PROTECTION FUNDING We were fortunate to receive funding through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) in 2020.

Processed through Bank of America, our PPP loan was instrumental in keeping our team members on staff while stay-at-home orders were in effect across the country. Because of our existing relationship with BofA, the process was seamless, and we received word recently that the loan was forgiven, allowing us to return our attention to our plans for the future.

Aside from financial products, my adviser has helped me find efficiencies I don’t always have time to find myself. We recently set up a mobile deposit station in our company office, allowing us to process revenue faster and avoid sending employees to the bank.

Additionally, just this month, we worked with the bank’s merchant services team to begin accepting credit and debit payments, a process that integrates seamlessly into our existing workflow.

I’ll admit that I’m not always up to date on the latest financing options or small business support and relief measures. I’m busy running a business -- one whose success I could have only dreamed of 20 years ago. That’s why I surround myself with advisers who take the time to understand my business and chart a path for growth and success for years to come.

Northern Tool + Equipment opening first Chicago-area store in Mount Prospect Northern Tool + Equipment, a Minnesota-based supplier of high-quality tools and equipment, is opening a new, 23,582-squarefoot store in Mount Prospect next month, company officials announced Tuesday.

The store, located at 201 W. Rand Road, will be the company’s first in the suburbs and second Illinois. The family-owned business has more than 120 stores across the country and is planning others in the Chicago area, officials said.

“Chicago is an exciting new market for our company and we are looking forward to providing solutions and expertise to pros and serious DIYers so they can do their hard work,” President and CEO Suresh Krishna said in Tuesday’s announcement.

The Mount Prospect store is expected to create nearly 20 new jobs, officials said.

It will sell tools and equipment from top names in the industry, including Stihl, Milwaukee, DeWalt, Lincoln Electric and Honda, as well as generators, gas and electric pressure washers, and its own exclusive line of products and equipment from Powerhorse and US-made NorthStar.

The store also will offer a small engine parts, service and repair, and a construction department with 275-plus tools and accessories, including scaffolding, cement mixers and more.

Northern Tool also provides 1,800 different types of trailer parts and tires, along with sprayers, wagons and fans.

Mexican Flavor in the U.S.

At this time of year, when we recognize our Hispanic heritage, it’s worth highlighting some of the pioneers who helped push Mexican flavor in the United States.

Perhaps these pioneers would be astonished to see the penetration and acceptance of traditional Mexican dishes and beverages into every American home.

The prevalence of tacos as one of the favorite dishes in the homes of any ethnic or racial group in the U.S. is impressive. And what about the consumption of nachos, salsas, and guacamole? For many years the number one cocktail in the country has been the Margarita. Indeed, the success of Mexican flavor in the U.S. has been astounding.

The food and Mexican flavor have influenced American cuisine for centuries. During the latter half of the 1900s, Mexican-inspired foods reached every corner of the United States, penetrating homes of all types.

Along with traditional foods such as tortillas, tacos, tamales, enchiladas, and salsas, new dishes emerged that reflected a blend of Mexican, regional areas such as Texas and other Latino cultures. This is according to the archives of the National Museum of American History.

Tortillas in the supermarket

The traditional corn tortilla and the increasingly popular flour tortilla became essential components of everyday American food after 1950.

Companies tapped into the growing Latino market by mass-producing Mexican, Central American, and Caribbean foods.

They produced taco kits, tortilla chips, and frozen burritos, becoming staples in supermarkets and convenience stores.

In the 1990s, salsa, with its traditional Mexican flavor, challenged ketchup for condiment supremacy in the United States.

Art Velasquez, a Chicago entrepreneur, founded Azteca Foods in 1969, which sold Mexican and Central American foods in supermarkets across the country. Azteca extended the shelf life of its corn flour and tortillas, and the mold was used in restaurants to bake taco salads.

The Tex-Mex Invasion

After her family emigrated from Mexico to Texas in the 1890s, Adelaida Cuellar began selling her handmade tamales at the county fair, which she prepared with the most exquisite Mexican flavor.

In 1928, she opened a neighborhood

restaurant, which her family expanded in the 1950s into the El Chico Tex-Mex restaurant chain. By the 1990s, the Cuellars owned more than 100 El Chico restaurants, from Dallas to Dubai, where American oil company executives could enjoy a taste of home.

The Cuellars were among the first entrepreneurs to help transform Tex-Mex food into one of the most popular and widespread forms of Mexican American cuisine.

Hundreds of Tex-Mex-style restaurants opened in the United States, competing with other regional variations such as Cal-Mex, Sonoran-Mex, and New Mex-Mex, and fastfood chains such as Taco Bell.

Central American restaurants also added Tex-Mex dishes and drinks to their menus.

El Chico was one of many companies marketing their brands of canned and frozen foods for distribution in supermarkets.

Frozen Margaritas!

First mixed in bars along the Califor-

nia-Mexico border in the 1940s, the Margarita (tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur) became a standard drink in Mexican-American restaurants.

Frozen margaritas, mixed with ice, became popular in the 1950s and other tropical drinks made with rum and tequila. By the 1970s, the Margarita had surpassed the Martini as the most famous American cocktail. It remains popular today.

An Eye-Catching Future for Mexican Flavor

Along with many others who helped spread the Mexican flavor, these pioneers have helped American palates enjoy the wide variety of Hispanic food.

The growth we will continue to see in the U.S. Hispanic population, and that new generations of consumers desire different seasonings will drive this genre. This means that the growth potential for Mexican food and beverages will continue to be very appealing.

Gloria Estefan on Latino representation in Hollywood: ‘We have to keep talking about it’ DAVID OLIVER

Diversity is the buzziest sentiment in Hollywood. But statistics indicate not enough action has happened beyond the word for many communities – especially for Hispanics and Latinos.

Across 1,300 of the top box office films between 2007 and 2019, just 48 lead or co-lead roles were Hispanic or Latino – just 3.5%, even though they make up 18.7% of the U.S. population, according to a recent University of Southern California study. And despite overdue representation in this year’s Emmy nominations, Hispanics and Latinos failed to win anyacting awards.

“The bottom line is, we have to keep talking about it,” singer Gloria Estefan said in an interview. “We have to keep it in the news. We have to keep it in people’s psyche.”

Latinos are perpetually absent in major newsrooms, Hollywood films and other media industries where their portrayals — or lack thereof — could deeply impact how their fellow Americans view them, according to a recentgovernment report.

All this couldn’t come at a more relevant time during Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through Oct. 15.

In Hollywood’s case, what needs to change is representation in front of and behind the camera – and meaningful change at that.

It’s Hispanic Heritage Month:Hispanic Heritage Month highlights culture, accomplishments of community. But is it inclusive enough?

Take it from someone who knows all too well. “Narcos” and “Coco” casting director Carla Hool began her career in Mexico but moved to Los Angeles 14 years ago. A fourth-generation member of the film industry, she advocates for Latino representation in Hollywood. Only 3.3% of casting directors from the films in the USC study were Hispanic or Latino – mirroring measly percentages for directors and producers, too.

“It has changed a lot,” she says, not discounting progress. “But I think there’s still work to be done.”

U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, recently said the lack of accurate representation, especially in Hollywood, means at the very best that Americans don’t get a full understanding of Latinos and their contributions. At worst — especially when Latinos are solely portrayed as drug dealers or criminals — it invites negative stereotypes.

Expect to see plenty of Hispanic and Latino representation on “Red Table Talk: The Estefans,” which premieres 12 new episodes beginning Sept. 30. The series, starring Grammy winner Estefan, her niece Lili and daughter Emily, will tackle everything from young girls seeking plastic surgerytochildhood sexual abuse to colorism in Latino communities.

says. “We are proud Latinas. But we have white skin and that’s how the world perceives and treats us. Having the opportunity to amplifyour brothers and sisters in the Afro-Latino (community) that was really, really important to all of us.”

Gloria Estefan saw a tweet when controversy brewed about the movie “In the Heights” that said not all Latino people look like her. The film, released this past summer, fueled angerbecause it failed to include many Afro-Latino characters.

“I was actually used as an example of what Latinos aren’t even though I am 100% Latina,” Estefan says. “That really resonated with me and I understand the comment completely, and where it’s coming from.”

The “Conga” singer praised Gloria Kellett, co-showrunner of “One Day at a Time,” who has many projects in the works. That’s what it will take to improve representation.

“Getting in there, and actually being in positions of strength, and the ability to producethe kind of things that we want to see is important,” the 64-year-old says.

The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative recommends several solutions for the industry, including for talent agencies to sign Hispanic/Latino talent; film festivals to support emerging Hispanic/Latino talent; and for

corporations to hire behind the camera.

Opportunity in the industry, however, even in front of the camera, doesn’t necessarily guarantee consistency. While actors like Anthony Ramos (“In Treatment,” “In the Heights”) are getting more recognition, actresses like Yalitza Aparicio haven’t done much.

“I look forward to keep seeing (people like Ramos)working on more and more projects and big projects, without them having to be necessarily represented as Latinx,” Hool says.

Hool also spoke to the importance for the community to stick together, even when members disagree. She points out it was “a huge step forward” that Afro-Latinos were in “In the Heights” at all, for example.

If communities start attacking each other, they’ll never work together.

Lili Estefan says that she’s been working in the Hispanic market for 35 years, and it’s a dream to cross over into the Anglo market.

“I see this generation getting ready ... They’re just waiting for the opportunity.”

Tricky conversations about the COVID-19 vaccine with family and friends: Listen, Ask, Help!

We all know someone who is hesitant to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Whether it’s due to misinformation online or false assumptions about how the vaccine works, there are numerous reasons why people won’t get vaccinated.

LISTEN - It is important that while having these conversations, we listen to each other.

It isn’t easy to have differing opinions with loved ones. But listening to each other and acknowledging each other’s thoughts is the first step towards getting more loved ones vaccinated.

Minority communities have the highest rate of COVID-19 cases and are the least vaccinated. By listening to their concerns, we can spark an honest, lifesaving conversation.

Acknowledge understandable fears minorities have regarding the medical community. This may be a central reason as to why these individuals won’t get vaccinated.

While listening, do not get discouraged.

Many people use the internet for answers, and we need to ensure the information they are consuming is accurate.

ASK - Many non-vaccinated individuals feel as though the vaccine will affect their bodies worse than the virus itself. Ask questions about their concerns so that an honest conversation can be had. Empower them to learn more by explaining the differences in all three vaccines.

After you ask them their ’why’ tell them your reason why by relating to their fears. Try and understand why they may be hesitant and ask them to elaborate on their concerns.

HELP - The ending of the conversation that we’re hoping for is to not only convince someone to get vaccinated but to also feel more educated to have the conversation with someone else, and so on.

Dispel myths with facts by acknowledging how their decision to get vaccinated can help save their life.

Latino Art Beat produces short films to encourage and recognize the talents of young filmmakers. Fiona Cummings grew up in the UK and was a passionate Girl Guide and Queen’s Guide (Girl Scout and Gold Award Girl Scout are the US equivalents). She worked for BP in various leadership roles in multiple countries during her 28-year career and has lived in the US for the last 21 years. She has been the CEO of Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois for the past 8 years.

Fiona has a BA in French and Spanish, an MA in Applied Linguistics (TESOL), an MS in Values-Driven Leadership, and is currently a doctoral candidate examining how young women around the world develop leader self-identity and leadership perceptions. Her passion is enabling girls and young women to realize their own leadership to help make the world a better place.

Fiona has three children, 29, 26, and 20. When not working, studying, or seeing her family, her greatest interests are hiking, and traveling to learn about other cultures to find what connects us in our common humanity and values.

Most popular Hispanic last names and the history behind them LOPEZ

In the U.S. there are many last names in the Hispanic community each meaning something different and having a separate history behind them. According to the 2012 U.S. census the most common last Hispanic last names are listed above in order. Now many of us either have this last name or know another with one of these names. Let us dive a little deeper to find out what the meaning behind these names and their origin through history.

RODRIGUEZ

GARCIA

From historical translations we can see that Garcia means “bear” in Spanish and even in France.

Now let us explore where the name originates from.Many of theselast names originated from Spain, or to be more technical, a kingdom that was a part of Spain. Garcia has been traced back as early as the Middle Ages to the specific kingdom of Navarre. From this kingdom many of the Garcia’s spread throughout Spain spreading into many other kingdoms.

Garcia was even spread into France where it slightly changed from its Spanish pronunciation, for example Garcon. Garcia was also commonly used as a first name in medieval Spain among different families of different social hierarchy. This crest depicts one of the Garcia family crests around. The name would be spread to the new world places such as Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, and many South

The name Rodriguez comes from an interesting origin as it comes from a Germanic origin from the Visigoths who invaded Spain in the 400s and left a name. The original name in the Germanic language was “hrodric” which translates to renown power or famous power. The first recorded use and spelling of the family name is Heinrich Rodigerus in 1260 in Lubeck, in now Germany. However this name wasn’t officially adopted in Spain until in church registers of Rodriquez de Leon in 1536 and Juan Rodriquez de Santos in 1662 in Valladolid, Spain. The meaning of the name changed in Spanish to mean “the son of rodrick” as the “ez” at the end of the name means “the son of.” Again this family crest shows of the many different Rodríguez family crests that exist. Some of the earlier records of Rodriguez in the new world date from the 1560’s with names such as Vicente Rodríguez, Beatriz Rodríguez, Sebastian Rodríguez and Bartolomé Rodríguez to name a few. Some of these names settled in places such as Peru, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Nicaragua, and many other Central American countries.

MARTINEZ

The third most popular family name we will explore will be the family of Martínez.

Let us explore the original meaning of the name. The name, just as in Rodríguez in a way, translates to “son of martin.” Martin originates from Latin to the name Martinus or Mars, which is associated with the Roman god of war and fertility. Martínez was brought into Spain by the Christian faith in the early years around the 4th century.

Where, in Spain, it was changed to the common name that we see today. One of the first recorded spellings of the name in Spain was

by Martínez di Castille around 1580 in Madrid during the reign of King Philip II. Accounts of the name in the new world show up around the time of the 1520s. The name could be seen in Juan Martínez de Ampués who was governor of Santo Domingo and later was governor of Curaçao. Other accounts of the name can be seen in Peru, Nicaragua, and Cuba around the mid-1500.

The last most popular name that we will look into briefly is the family name of Lopez. The origin of the name Lopez can be attributed and traced to Latin word of “Lupus” or “Wolf.” Again remember that in many names ending with “ez” this usually translates to “Son of.” So the name Lopez translates to “Son of the Wolf,” with many different variations in different areas such as Portugal, Romania, Italy, and many others. The name presumed to have arrived in Spain or the kingdom of Castille by the Romans during their conquest and rule of their empire in Spain. There are early mentions of the name in the new world which appear in Mexico, Chile, Hispaniola, Colombia, and Nicaragua along with other South American countries. There have been many famous people attributed to this name both in our time and in history. One famous name that is not widely known is one of Fernando Cortes’s captains Francisco Lopez who helped in the exploration and battles against the Mexica (Aztecs). There of course are many famous names now such as Jennifer Lopez, George Lopez, and Mario Lopez just to name a few.

HERNANDEZ

The Fourth most popular name to be explored is the Hernández family name where the name translates to mean “son of Fernando.” This name originates from the Visigoth name of Ferdinand which means “traveler or bold voyager.” The name has been said to have become popular with King Ferdinand III of Castille and León, who led the Reconquista of Spain against the Moors (Muslims).

One of the first mention or appearance of the Hernandez family name in the new world is in Brazil around the mid 1600’s. Other mentions of the name appear in Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and many more nations.

Our last names can tell a lot about ourselves and even information we didn’t even know. I claim to be no expert on names or their history but some research that anyone can do can show you history unknown before. If these aren’t your names listed here don’t be discouraged feel free to look into the meaning and history of your family name.

Seems odd that Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15–Oct. 15) begins in the middle of the month, but its date is significant, marking the independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Both Chile and Mexico celebrate their independence just days after.

Hispanics are a diverse bunch, to say the least, and the monthlong celebration honors the history, culture and influence of past generations who came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and both Central and South America.

“As a chef, this month sort of feels like my birthday,” says Roberto Treviño — restaurateur, celebrity (from “Iron Chef” to near countless Food Network appearances), veteran chef for James Beard Foundation House dinners and, more recently, the Orlando-based Culinary Director for Tapa Toro (8441 International Drive in Orlando, 407-226-2929; tapatoro.restaurant).

Treviño just wants to celebrate.

“It’s no secret how important food is to Hispanic countries. Some might say that food is the most important thing to us, so getting into the kitchen, preparing traditional dishes and serving them to people of various backgrounds is an honor.”

It’s what he’s doing in part in his new

role in town, at a place where paella, flamenco, sangria and tapas are of the order.

“Tapa Toro is a great place to explore the mother country of a lot of Hispanic cuisine,” says Treviño. “A tortilla in Cuba is an omelet, a tortilla in Mexico is a flatbread and in Spain, it’s an omelet with potatoes. The diversity is real!”

The tortilla Española, he notes, is a great dish to attempt at home as it’s relatively easy and comprised of eggs, potatoes and onions — ingredients many people always have on hand.

“It’s a signature Spanish dish — you won’t find it prepared like this in other Hispanic countries — but the cool thing is that you can add in ingredients that you love to make it your own.

Treviño’s popular but short-lived Orlando venue, El Buda, seduced its fans with seriously creative fusions of Latin and Asian cuisine, so his decadent, fun suggestions — “I’d add in char siu or top a traditional tortilla Española with Mongolian beef” — aren’t that surprising.

“Orlando is so fortunate to have diversity within the Hispanic community,” he says, “so go eat and explore the beauty of the culture and its people.”

With this take straight from España, you can begin the journey right in your own kitchen.

Tortilla Española by Tapa Toro INGREDIENTS 10 ounces Yukon potatoes 3 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 Vidalia onion, sliced thin 8 large eggs 1/2 cup parsley, finely chopped 1/2 cup heavy cream 2 teaspoons vegetable oil

INSTRUCTIONS 1,Peel potatoes and place in pot of boiling water.

2.Simmer potatoes until tender. Cool in refrigerator one hour.

3. Slice cooled potatoes about 1/4-inch thick.

4.In small mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, cream and chopped parsley. Salt and pepper mixture to taste.

5. Add vegetable oil to medium-sized pan. Add onion and garlic and lightly sweat over low heat until translucent, then add potatoes. *If you’d like to add any other vegetables, herbs, cheeses, etc. do at this step.

6. Pour egg mixture on top of the potatoes. Try not to stir the egg mixture in pan.

Just gently tap the pan to let the mixture fill in the gaps between the potatoes.

7. Cook 2-3 minutes on the stovetop, then finish in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes or until internal temperature reads 170°F. 8. Using rubber spatula, loosen the edge of the egg from the pan; place a plate on top of the pan and quickly invert to remove tortilla.

9. Allow to cool, then slice like a cake into wedges or rectangles. Garnish with aioli (recipe below) and greens.

Classic Aioli INGREDIENTS 1 egg 4 medium cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1 cup canola, vegetable, or light olive oil Salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS Combine egg, garlic, and lemon juice in food processor to combine. With machine running on slow setting, very slowly drizzle in the oil until desired consistency reached. (Adding the oil slowly is very important for the consistency.) Taste and add salt and pepper as necessary.

If so, your lender will be sure to focus on your credit score – a three-digit number that plays an important role in qualifying you for everything from loans and credit cards to apartment rentals and some insurance policies.

Yet, you should be focusing on something else instead: your credit payment history. It is the most important factor affecting your credit score. Plus, unlike your credit score, it’s something you can actually review and manage on your own. In fact, here are four important steps that you should complete: Step 1: Order a Credit Report Getting a copy of your credit report is the best way to view your credit payment history.

The best way to do that is by visiting the government-authorized website annualcreditreport.com. You can go there to order a free credit report from any of the three big credit-reporting companies. Those companies are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Normally, you can order one report from each company every calendar year (per federal law). Due to the pandemic, though, the federal government has changed that rule to give you an opportunity to order your credit report more frequently. From now until April 2022, you can get a free credit report every week from each credit reporting company.

Step 2: Review Your History Once you get a copy of your credit report, be sure to study your credit payment history. You’ll want to look for: • inaccurate personal information • unrecognized credit, loan and household-bill accounts • incorrect payment history entries • any inaccurate account status (such as a closed account marked as open) • incorrect credit limits and balances • any other errors • any unresolved debts (overdue balances that remain unpaid and may even be flagged for collection) Your findings will tell you what kind of action you may need to take.

If you determine your history is accurate and positive, you can take comfort in knowing your credit score will reflect that. No action is necessary. You can skip Step 3 below and move on to Step 4.

However, if you see any blemishes, such as inaccurate entries or unresolved debts, those could have a negative impact on your credit score. Move on to Step 3 below.

Step 3: Repair Your History You’ll want to address any credit information that is inaccurate or unresolved.

• If your credit report lists any incorrect items, be proactive.

Contact the credit reporting company that supplied your report and request to have those items corrected. You also will need to contact each business that supplied wrong information, in order to request a correction. (For more detailed instructions about how to dispute errors, visit this Federal Trade Commission web page: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/disputing-errors-your-credit-reports.)

•If your credit report lists an unresolved item, then take action to remedy the situation. For example, if your report lists an open collection action, contact the creditor. Ask if you can negotiate for either new payment terms or a total payment that is less than what you actually owe. Then follow through with the new plan and pay down that debt as quicky as possible. This will help clean up your credit history so that you can apply for new credit with confidence.

Step 4: Keep Checking Your Credit History Continue to order free copies of your credit report. Then compare each new report with your previous reports. You’ll want to make sure the reported information is accurate. That’s because it’s always easier to correct inaccuracies sooner rather than later.

La investigación realizada en ratas sugiere que el magnesio desempeña dos funciones clave para ayudarte a desempeñarte mejor: ayuda a alimentar tus músculos al mejorar el $ujo de glucosa (combustible) hacia ellos y ayuda a tu cuerpo a deshacerte del ácido láctico (un subproducto del ejercicio que puede conducir a a la rigidez post-entrenamiento).

El magnesio también puede ayudar con la ansiedad y el síndrome premenstrual. Una revisión de 2017 de la investigación existente encontró que aproximadamente la mitad de los estudios mostraron un bene%cio para la ansiedad o el síndrome premenstrual y la otra mitad no, por lo que se necesitan más estudios.

Si bien las mujeres con los niveles más bajos de magnesio tenían los niveles más altos de in$amación, tomar 250 mg de magnesio durante dos meses no pareció afectar la in$amación. Si te preocupa que tus niveles sean bajos, considera la posibilidad de hacerte la prueba. “Realiza una evaluación completa (memoria dietética y análisis de sangre) de tu dieta y la ingesta de nutrientes y ve si necesitas magnesio adicional”, sugiere Antine. Seguir la recomendación de RDA de 350 miligramos por día para individuos sanos es adecuado.

Youth lead Parade of Nations for Hispanic Heritage Month

Latino youth were stars of the show in downtown Aurora on Friday night.

Hundreds of supporters came out Oct. 1 for the youth-led Parade of Nations as part of the city’s “Aurora Avanzando” (“Aurora Forward”) Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.

Popular 9-year-old mariachi singer Ryan Cornejo opened the ceremony with a performance that received a standing ovation.

Students then represented the vast diversity in the Latino community during a flag ceremony highlighting 20 Latin countries, where each participant entered the event to their respective country’s national anthem and shared facts about the country.

Then the flag bearers collectively “circled the globe” before proceeding into the downtown area. They were greeted by the cheers of residents and visitors enjoying a Friday evening out on the town.

Una app para relojes avisará a personas con problemas auditivos

Por desgracia, no puedes oír la sirena, ya que sufres problemas de audición. Por suerte, tu reloj de muñeca vibra y emite un aviso: “Ambulancia acercándose!. Esa es, en síntesis, la %losofía que alienta un nuevo proyecto de la Universidad de Washington.

Aprovechando las ventajas de la tecnología llevable, conocida como wearables, pretende dotar a las personas con discapacidades auditivas con una nueva herramienta para manejarse en el entorno doméstico y urbano.

Bautizada como SoundWatch, la app utiliza aprendizaje de máquinas para identi%car numerosos sonidos. Su biblioteca comprende vehículos de policía y ambulancias, pero también la campana de un microondas, una alarma de incendios, el timbre de la puerta o incluso el trino de los pájaros. Porque, según sus desarrolladores, más que

un simple complemento práctico para las tareas cotidianas, se trata de un dispositivo destinado a ampli%car la riqueza sensorial de las personas.

El primer prototipo, que los desarrolladores nombraron HomeSound, se basaba en una red de tabletas distribuidas por el hogar. Los usuarios podían comprobar en cada pantalla lo que estaba sucediendo en el resto de la casa, desde un niño llorando, un grifo abierto o al ladrido de un perro. El éxito de las pruebas preliminares generó la demanda de un dispositivo que también funcionase en el exterior, lo que llevó al desarrollo de SoundWatch.

Debido a que el procesamiento del audio en tiempo real consume mucha batería, decidieron emparejar los relojes inteligentes con teléfonos móviles por medio de Bluetooth. De este modo, es el teléfono el que se encarga de los procesos computacionalmente intensivos. Aún con todo, el software aún se encuentra en fase de aprendizaje. Una de las áreas de trabajo es la capacidad de diferenciar entre sonidos especí%cos y el mero ruido ambiental.

Se espera que la app esté disponible pronto para Android, aunque ya hay una app descargable en fase beta.

Mientras tanto, además de esta tecnología para teléfonos inteligentes, el equipo está desarrollando un sistema que ofrece avisos visuales similares, aunque empleando unas gafas de realidad aumentada.

Tal como demuestra la app SoundWatch, los móviles inteligentes se están convirtiendo en herramientas de apoyo fundamentales para las personas con discapacidades físicas o cognitivas. Y, si aquella sirve como herramienta para quienes sufren problemas auditivos, una tecnología de los móviles de última generación hará algo similar por quienes están aquejados de problemas de visión. Hablamos de los sensores LiDAR. Es decir, una tecnología que permite mapear el entorno en 3D por medio de pulsos láser. Además de utilizarse en el campo de la realidad aumentada, estos sensores comienzan a ser un aliado para manejarse en el exterior en ausencia de visión. Esta funcionalidad está ya disponible en algunos teléfonos de última generación, que permiten determinar la distancia de personas, objetos y vehículos con gran precisión. Para hacerse una idea, un teléfono equipado con LiDAR puede hacer las veces de metro para medir estancias con un margen de error de centímetros. Eso sí, con menos encanto que un labrador.

El Potrillo dedica emotivo mensaje a su padre Carolina Pikacho, Fronteras de la Noticia - elcinco.mx Desde hace más de dos meses, Vicente Fernández se encuentra hospitalizado debido a una aparatosa caída que sufrió en su habitación del rancho “Los Tres Potrillo”. Durante todo ese tiempo, su hijo Alejandro Fernández había mantenido cierto hermetismo respecto al tema.

Sin embargo, el 8 de octubre rompió el silencio y aprovechó su cuenta de Instagram para dedicarle un emotivo mensaje y una fotografía del recuerdo donde se les ve a los dos muy felices en una alfombra roja.

En la imagen se observa a ambos en el Paseo de la Fama de Hollywood, cuando el Potrillo recibió su condecoración el pasado 2 de diciembre de 2005. Las palabras de aliento de Alejandro Fernández acompañaron las sonrisas que tuvieron aquel inolvidable momento.

“Siempre en mis pensamientos y mis oraciones, échale ganas jefe , todos te extrañamos, no sabes que gusto me dio ver esta foto !!! te amo y mucho ánimo, vas muy bien !”, escribió el intérprete de “Me dedique a perderte”.

Sus amigos y compañeros de profesión no perdieron tiempo y comentaron esta publicación con emojis y mensajes de cariño para ambos en estos difíciles momentos en los que el “Charro de Huentitán” se encuentra delicado de salud.

Quien sí ha estado más en contacto con su padre y los medios de comunicación ha sido Vicente Fernández Jr. primogénito de la dinastía y encargado de dar a conocer, junto con sus médicos, los cambios en la salud de Don Chente.

Ante los rumores de que su madre, María del Refugio Abarca Villaseñor, mejor conocida como “Cuquita”, habría tomado la decisión de desconectar al “Charro de Huentitán”, salió a desmentir esta información y otorgó algunos detalles sobre la salud de su padre quien, en sus palabras, ha tenido una respuesta favorable a sus tratamientos.

tro de ceremonias de org'as de alcohol celebradas en su castillo.

El potente dardo de la acusación del poder del hombre se diluye al comprobar que la pel'cula termina con otra !uerte expresión de lo mismo. El acto -nal de esta obra se concentra en la lucha a caballo entre Damon y Driver y luego en la lucha cuerpo a cuerpo en el barro, rodeados de una sanguinaria multitud.
