Totreatmillionsofgallonsofcontaminatedrainwaterthathasfilteredthrough wasteattheclosedMallardLakelandfillin HanoverPark,DuPageCountyForestPreserveDistrictofficialsareusingwhatthey knowbest:trees.

Sincecomingonlinein2018,a14-acre irrigationsystemof8,500treeshastreated morethan20milliongallonsoftheleachate thatotherwisewouldhavebeentruckedtoa watertreatmentplant.That’scurbingemissions,savingenergyandcuttingcostsforthe district.

Thetreessoakuptheleachate,using compoundstofuelgrowthandreleasing cleanwaterthroughtheirleavesviaaprocesscalled“evapotranspiration.”Districtstaff memberssaythetreesalsoprovidewildlife habitatandimproveaestheticsforneighbors ofthepreserveandusersofthenearbyNorth CentralDuPageRegionalTrail.

Thesystemisoneofthreelikeitinthe state--oneinSouthBarringtonandtheotherinMilanneartheQuadCities--andit’s believedtobethelargestintheU.S.Officials sayitsofarhasreducedleachatedisposal costsby$700,000.Withaninstallationcost of$919,000,thedistrictiswithinafewyears ofareturnonitsinvestment.

Theinitialfundingcameoutofacounty fundbuiltwithfeesfromlandfillusersover theyears.

Lastmonth,membersoftheInternationalPhytotechnologySociety,aprofessional scientificassociationfocusedonusingplants toaddressenvironmentalissues,touredthe closedlandfill.

“ItisgratifyingtomethattheInternationalPhytotechnologySocietyconsiders oursiteamodelofscienceandengineering putintopracticeandworthyofattention,” saidDanZinnen,thedistrict’sdirectorof resourcemanagementanddevelopment, “becausefromthetimetheprojectwasconceived,wewantedittobothfunctionally addressourenvironmentalprotectionneeds anddemonstratethatlandfillsneednotbe wastelands--theycanbeavaluablepartof thelandscapeifwe’rewillingtomaketheeffort.”

Thelandfill,whichoperatedfrom1970 to1975,hasbeeninthecareofthecounty sinceitsclosure.ItisreferredtoasMallard NorthtodistinguishitfromtheMallard Lakelandfill,whichisthelargestinthestate andoperatedfrom1975to1999.Thedistrict maintainssevenclosedlandfillsintotal.

AtthetimeMallardNorthwasbuilt, “therewasnounderstandingofgroundwatercontamination,”Zinnensaid,andthere werelittletonoenvironmentalprotections separatingthewastefromthenearbyWest BranchDuPageRiver.

Sincethen,thecountyhasputaseries ofsystemsinplacetoaddresstheissue,in-

cludinganetworkofabout30wellsdrilled throughoutthelandfill.Thecountyalso keepstabsonpotentialcontaminationat eachofitslandfillswithgroundwatermonitoringwells.

Leachateispumpedoutofthewellsand storedina20,000-gallontankon-site.From there,thecontaminatedwateriseithersent toawastewatertreatmentplantordiverted tothetreesystem,whichessentiallyisa“sophisticatedirrigationsystem”thatincludesa computersystem,aweatherstationand69 milesofirrigationtubing,Zinnensaid.

Thetrees--mostlypoplarandwillowdue tohowfastthespeciesgrow--drinkupthe fluidandbreatheitoutthroughtheirleaves, absorbingorganicchemicalslikeammonia alongtheway.

Thetreesuseammoniaasfertilizer,neutralizingoneofthedistrict’smoredireconcernsbeingsoclosetotheriver--ammonia isextremelyharmfultoaquaticlife.Inorganiccompoundslikemetalalsocanbeabsorbedbythetrees,whichstorethemintheir woodastheygrow.

“Oneofthebiggerwaysthebadstuffand theleachategetsdegradedisalsointhesoil itself,becausethere’sthiswholeecosystemin thesoil,particularlyatthetreerootinterface, wheretherearefungiandbacteriathatlatch ontothetreeroots,”Zinnensaid.

“Theyhaveasymbioticrelationship wherethere’satradeofmoistureornutrients,andalotofthoseorganismsattheroot

interfacedoalotofbiologicaldegradationof thebadcompounds.”

Theoverallgoalistoslowlydrawdown howmuchleachateisinthelandfill,preventingitfromleakingintotheriverordowninto thegroundwater.Thedistrictisabletotreat upto5.4milliongallonsayearwiththesystem.

“We’reatthepointnowwherewemetour firstgoalofgettingallourpumpsattheelevationoftheriver.Nowthequestionis,do wewanttolowerourpumpstogettheleachatelevellower,knowingwearelikelygoing todrawinsomeriverwater?It’skindofa

‘whatisourpreference?’situation,”Zinnen said.“Wedohavegroundwatermonitoring wellsallaroundthelandfill,soweknowthat forthemostpart,therearenoimpactsfrom thelandfill.”

Whilethedistrictisusinghybridwillows andpoplarstogetstarted,Zinnenhopesto incorporatemorenativetreesandbringthe environmentclosertoanaturalecosystem. Already,localbirdsflocktothesiteandenjoy thehabitat.

Thisspring,thedistrictplantedahostof nativetreeseeds:walnut,Kentuckycoffee tree,oak,redbudanddogwood.

“We’rehopingtoevolvethesystemmore intoanaturalforestversusthisartificial mono-orbiculture,”Zinnensaid.“Black walnuttreesseemtoliketogrowonlandfills. Cottonwoodtreesseemtoliketogrowon landfills.Withsomeoftheseothertrees,we don’tknow,butwe’regoingtogiveitashot.

“Ifsomethingworks,we’llstickwithit.If itdoesn’twork,we’lltrysomethingelse.As farasweknow,nobody’sdoingwhatwe’re doinginthesituationwehave.”
