Researchersreviewedthecontentsof aboutadozenSpanish-languageTikTok postsdenyingclimatechangeandfalselyinsistingit’sahoax.Someofthepostsdeny theneedforactiononclimatechangeand evenincludereferencestoanonexistentsecretweathercontrolprogramatHAARP, whichstudiespartsoftheatmosphereand haslongbeenthetargetofconspiracytheoriesandevenflatEarththeories.
Spanish-language disinformationonsocial mediaaswellascoded languagetospread falsenarrativesoften fliesundertheradarof theplatform’scontent moderationpolicies.
SomeSpanish-languageTikTokposts usednewsprogram-likeclipsfeaturing supposedexpertsorstudiestoundermine scientificfactsaboutclimatechange.They alsoincludedclipssourcedfromRussia’s state-controlledinternationalTVnetwork.
DespiteTikTok’spolicyoflabelingstateaffiliatednewssources,thevideosremained unlabeled,possiblymissedbymonitors,accordingtothereport.
Whilethere’sanestablishednetworkof U.S.-basedEnglish-languagesocialmedia accountsspecificallyspreadingclimatedenialismnarrativesandopposingactionon climatechange,“thereisnotanequivalent
tothatinSpanish,”saidLópezG.,whocowrotea2022studyonfalseonlinenarratives inSpanisharoundclimatechangethatwas commissionedbytheorganizationsGreen LatinosandFriendsoftheEarth.
Instead,shefoundtherewasanetwork ofSpanish-languagesocialmediaaccounts, mostlybasedinSpainandLatinAmerica,
thatengagewithabroaderright-wingagendaandheavilyreliesontranslatedrightwingcontentoriginallygeneratedintheU.S. inEnglish.Amongthatcontentisclimate changedenialism.Thiswasparticularlytrue onTwitter,whichwasrecentlyrebranded to“X,”whereLópezG.identifiedmorethan 2,000disparateTwitteraccountsthatre-
flectedthispatterninherstudy.
“Itissharedideologyandsharedlanguagethatputsalltheseaccountsinthe samenetwork,eveniftheyarenotinthe samecountry,”LópezG.said.
StrongtiesbetweenSpanish-speaking immigrantcommunitiesintheU.S.and theircountriesoforiginhelpexplainwhyclimatemisinformationpostedbysocialmedia accountsinSpainandLatinAmericafinds itswayintothefeedsofLatinosintheU.S., LópezG.said.SometimesU.S.Latinosget clipsfromtheirrelativesviaWhatsAppor otherplatforms.
Latinosaremorelikelytorelyonsocial mediatostayinformedthanothergroups. EmmanuelAlcantar,aLosAngeles-based climateactivistwho’sworkedasapolicydirectorforseveralcampaigns,saidhe’sinteractedwithSpanishspeakerswhohavebeen onthereceivingendofthiskindofonline climatechangemisinformation.
Alcantarrecalledmeetingawomanin hisLosAngelesneighborhoodwhobelieved thathumanactivitywasnotcontributingto globalwarmingafterhersonsentheravideofromaright-wingsocialmediaaccountin Spanishdenyingclimatechange.“Itdefinitelythrewmeoff,”hesaid.
Anotherwoman,Alcantarsaid,believed thataddressingclimatechangeortransitioningtocleanenergywas“awayforthe governmenttohavemorecontroloverher energysystem,”whichthewoman’sown teenagedaughtertoldherwasnotthecase.
Spanish-languagemisinformationon socialmediaoftenfliesundertheradarand goesunscrutinizedbytheplatform’sown contentmoderationpolicies,accordingto threedifferentMediaMattersreportsexaminingthephenomenononTikTok,YouTubeandFacebook.
Thisis“extremelyconcerning,”researcher LeoFernandez,whowrotethelatestMedia Mattersreport,toldNBCNews.“Wehave seenadiscrepancybetweenpolicyenforcementaroundEnglishandSpanishcontent onothermajorplatforms.”
TheSpanish-languagepostsonTikTok recentlypointedoutbyMediaMatterswere postedandshareddespitethecompany’s contentmoderationpoliciesandcommunityguidelinesthatincluderemovingclimate changemisinformation“thatundermines well-establishedscientificconsensus,such ascontentdenyingtheexistenceofclimate changeorthefactorsthatcontributetoit.”
ATikTokspokespersontoldNBCNews theplatformreliesonSpanish-speaking moderators,expertsandfact-checkersto helpthemtacklemisinformation.Userscan alsouseTikTok’smisinformationreporting tooltoreportfalsecontentinEnglishand Spanish.
