HisparentshaveahomeinKahului about35minutesfromLahaina,nowdecimatedbyfiresthathavekilledmorethan 100people.

SakodafirstvisitedMauiwhenhewas2 yearsold.Asanadult,heservedthreeyears asexecutivechefatMerriman’srestaurant inKapalua,10milesuptheshorefromLahaina.

Healsomethiswife,Meredith,inMaui.

“LuckilyourhomeisOK,butsomany ofourfriendshavebeendevastatedbythe wildfires,”saidSakoda,agraduateofMundeleinHighSchoolnowlivinginBuffalo Grove.“ThelastIheard,atMerriman’s,78of theiremployeeslosttheirhomesorweredisplacedduetothefire,whichiscrazy.That’s likethree-quartersoftherestaurant,and that’sjustonerestaurant.”
