TheMatrixClub--a75,000-square-foot spaceatthesiteofashutteredSam’sClubon Route59--isfinallyopen,offeringvisitorsa banquethall,restaurant,theater,artgallery, soundlabandyogastudioallunderoneroof.
OntheheelsoftheMatrixClub’sfirstevents onAug.18,akeypieceoftheexperiencedebuts Thursdaynightwhentherestaurantopens. Meg’sLounge,namedafterKulkarni’sdaughterwhodiedlastyear,alsoopensforthefirst time.
Kulkarni,CEOandfounderoftheMatrix Club,saidit’sbeenanemotionalexperience seeingavisionbornmorethanadecadeago comealive.
“Ithasbeenfrustrating,andwehavehadto putupwithalotintermsofthingsnotarriving ontimeorbeingdoneontime,”Kulkarnisaid. “Despiteallofthat,thehopewasalive.”
It’sbeenalmostafullyearsincetheplanned openingdatefortheMatrixClub,butconstructiondelayskeptpushingbacktheopening. Numeroushighschools,includingMeteaValleyandNeuquaValley,bookedpromsforlast springbutendeduphavingtoswitchsites.
Despitethesetbacks,MatrixClubofficials hitthegroundrunninglastmonthwhenthey receivedacertificateofoccupancy.Amongthe firsteventswasfor2,100staffmembersfrom
IndianPrairieUnitDistrict204.
“Everyhighschoolweinteractedwith forpromfrom2023,theyhaverebookedfor 2024,”saidCherrylMarcey,theMatrixClub’s directorofsalesandmarketing.“Theadministrationsweretrulysupportiveabouthavingto relocate.Theycameinunderstandingthiswas anewbuild-out.”
Beyondhostingweddings,proms,corporateeventsandconcerts,Kulkarnienvisions theMatrixClubasamulticulturalhubfor
artistsfromtheareaandaroundtheworldto gatherascreators.
Withitslighting,soundandrecordingsystems,theMatrixClubhasthecapabilityof streamingeventsfromthebanquethall,theaterandrestaurant.
Afterinvestingmorethan$10millioninto construction,Kulkarniisconfidenttheconcept willsucceed.

Thenewrestaurantat1702CommonsDrive bringstheconcept’schef-drivenmenuandrotatingseasonalofferingstoa6,870-square-foot spacethatoffersoutsidediningunderacoveredpatio,servesitssignaturecocktailsatan indoor-outdoorbar,andseatsmorethan180 people.
FirstWatchGenevaisalsothefirstamong theconcept’ssixChicagoarearestaurantstointroducelife-sizegames--likebrunchbattleship --forcustomerstoenjoyduringtheirwait.
FirstWatchdebuteditsfirstChicagorestaurantinOakBrookinMarch2021andnowhas sixlocationsacrosstheWindyCityinKildeer, Naperville,Bloomingdale,Schaumburgand, mostrecently,Geneva.
“Overthelasttwoyears,we’vebeenthrilled tointroduceanewmorningroutinetoour neighborsthroughoutGreaterChicago,and ournewestrestaurantinGenevaseekstocontinueifnotaddtothatpositivemomentum,” saidRobertGlen,VicePresidentofOperations.

Thefarm’sgoodsalsoaresoldataweekly farmersmarketheldFridaysontheproperty, 490W.Route22,andatthehospitalevery otherThursday.Proceedsfromthosesales helpfundfarmoperations.
“Ourgoalrightnowistoreallyprovide foodforthosethatareinneedandwhoare foodinsecure,”saidJasmineEverett,director ofhospitalservices.AtTrinityHospital,the produceispartofa“FoodFarmacy”thatprovidesitemstopatientsinneed.
“Therearetwofoodinsecurityquestions thattheprovidertypicallyasks.Andifthey deem(thepatient)foodinsecure,theywill givethemaprescriptiontotheFoodFarmacy,”SmartFarmManagerChloeGoodman said.
Thefarmalsopartnerswiththehospital’sCenterforHealthandIntegrativeMedicine,whichcombinestraditionalmedicine withholisticmedicine,topromotehealthy eatinghabitsamongpatientsandinthe community.
Dr.LoriWalsh,thecenter’smedicaldirector,saidotherhospitalsacrossthecountrythatsitnearfarmsarelookingtofollow theGoodShepherdSmartFarmmodel.
Thefarmpropertyfeaturesanunassumingfarmhouse,thetypethatwasprobably commonintheBarringtonareapriortosuburbansprawl.Alonggraveldrivewayleadsto asmallhouse,andthepropertycontainsotherbuildingswhereplantsarestored,includinga“hoophouse”withrowsoftomatoes.
Awidearrayofplantsareraisedonthe farm:lettuce,corn,eggplant,collardgreens, tomatoes,peppers,beets,carrots,broccoli andmore.
Itisanovelpartnershipbetweenthehospitalandtwoactualfarmers,AdrianSaliu andChrisCubberly.Saliuhasexperience inpermaculturefarming,anapproachthat treatsthefarmasanecosystemwhereplants havedifferentfunctions.
“Somearepollinators.Someofthem bringnutrientstothesoil.Othersproduce food,”hesaid.
Italsomeans“workingwithnatureratherthanagainstit”throughsustainablepracticessuchasusingplantsasfertilizer--green manure.
Cubberlyhasanencyclopedicknowledge ofseedsgleanedfromhisemploymentata
seedcompanyinMaine.
Everettsaidthe2-acreoperationproducesmorethan16,800poundsofproduce pergrowingseason.Thatequatestoabout 14,500meals.Aplannedexpansioncould bringthatupto100,000mealsperyear,she added.

grewoutoftheneedtokeeptheFoodFarmacysustainable.
Notonlydoesthefarmmakemorefood availabletomorepeople,butitcouldalso beamodeltohelpeducatepeopleaboutthe valueofgrowingfoodthemselves,Hampton said.
“Maybedowntheroad,wecaninvolve highschoolsandhelp(students)understand wherefoodactuallycomesfrom,”headded.

Whatitis
Communitysolarreferstolocalsolararraysthatcommunitymemberscansubscribe toinexchangeforcreditontheirelectricity bills.Formanyconsumers,it’sawaytoparticipateinsolarpowerwithouthavingto purchaseandmaintaintheirownpanels.
“Communitysolarisreallybestforpeoplewhoareinalivingsituationthatcan’t supportsolarontheirhouse,”saidNicola Brown,aprogramassociatewiththeIllinois SolarEducationAssociation.
Thatincludesrenters,peopleinmultifamilyhomes,peoplewhosehomesaretoo shadedtosupportsolar,andpeoplewho can’taffordtheupfrontcostsofsolar.
Forthosewhodohavesolarontheir home,iftheirarraydoesn’tcovertheirentire electricityusage,theycansupplementitby alsosubscribingtocommunitysolar.
“Acombinationofrooftopsolaranddistributedsolarandutilityscalesolarcanreallyrisetomeetthedemandsofthecarbon reductiongoalsthatmoststateshave,”said KeithHevenor,thecommunicationmanagerforsolarenergycompanyNexamp.“Illinoisisprettyaggressive...ingettingtothose goals,andwefeellikecommunitysolarprovidesanopportunityforfolkstogetinvolved inthattransition--withsomebenefitsbecausethey’regonnasavesomemoneyon theirutilityexpenses--iftheyweren’totherwiseabletoparticipateinsolar.”

Bothorganizationsencourageconsumerstoshoparoundtolookforthebestdeal. Typically,ahouseholdthatcoverstheirentire usagethroughcommunitysolarwillsave1020%onitselectricbill.
MarkPruitt,principalatenergyconsultingfirmThePowerBureau,addedwhile shopping,consumersshouldbeawareof anysignuporcancellationfees,creditchecks andthelengthofapotentialsubscription contract.
Consumersalsoshouldbearinmindsavingswillcomeintheformoftwobills:one fromtheirutilityandonefromtheirsolar provider.Aconsumerwillseemoneytaken offtheirelectricbill,titled“solarcredits.” Theythenpaytheirsolarproviderforthe credits--butatadiscountedrate,hencethe savings.

Thisishowthelawissetup,”hesaid.“The lawrequirestheutilitytoallocatesharesof theoutputfromthecommunitysolarfarm tothesubscribers,andthentoprovidea creditbasedontheutilityrateforthosecredits.That’sthebasicpremise:It’snottoogood tobetruebecausethisiswhatstatelawand utilitytariffssaymusthappen.”
Tohelpmunicipalitiescutthroughthe noiseandofferreliablecommunitysolar totheirresidents,theMetropolitanMayorsCaucuslaunchedtheCommunitySolar ClearinghouseSolutionProgramin2019, withPruittasitsconsultant.
Theinitiativeconnectsmunicipalities withsolardevelopersthroughacompetitive biddingprocess,andthenallowsthecities andtownstopresentsubscriptiontermsto theirresidentsandsmallbusinesses--essentiallyeliminatingthemiddlemanandprovidinga“fairandtransparent”community solaroptiontoconsumers.
ParticipatingcommunitiesincludeDeerfield,Glencoe,HighlandPark,LakeForest, Northbrook,Elgin,Glenview,Lombard, MountProspect,SchaumburgandWilmette.Formoreinformation,residentscan checktheirmunicipalitywebsites.
Thesupplyproblem
Asmoreresidentsandcommercialcustomerslearnaboutcommunitysolar,the
markethasgrownsothatthereismoredemandthansupply,Pruittsaid.
“Thedemandhasgrownfasterthanthe supplyhasgrownbecauseyou’retalking aboutbuildingasolarfarmthatbasically putssolarpanelsonanywherefrom10to20 acresofland.That’salot,”hesaid.“There’s alwaysgoingtobeachallengewithgetting thesenewassetsbuiltanywhere.”
Pruittadded,ontopofthenormallagdue tothedevelopmentprocess,therealsowasa laginstatefundingthatoccurredbetween thepassagesofIllinois’twoclimatelegislativepackages:theFutureEnergyJobsActin 2017andtheClimateandEquitableJobsAct in2021.
Thegoodnewsforthoseinterestedin communitysolaristhenumberofdevelopmentshasgrownfourfoldoverthelastthree years--andmoreprojectsarecomingdown thepipeline.
InDecember2020,ComEdhadabout 20communitysolardevelopmentsinitsterritory.AsofJuly2023,therewereabout80.
“Wedoexpecttohaveseveralmorecome onlinebytheendoftheyear,”saidScottVogt, ComEd’svicepresidentofstrategyandenergypolicy.“We’veseensubstantialgrowth overthelastfouryearsorso.Thatwasall drivenbyFEJAforthemostpart,andthat wasreallytheenablinglegislationforcommunitysolar.”
Exampleinthefield
Asmoreprojectstakeshapethroughout Illinois,arecentNexampprojectinKane Countyshowsonewaydeveloperscanapproachtheissueoflanduse.Amongthe 7,000panelsthatmakeupFrenchRoadSolarinBurlington,wildflowersthrive.
Thepollinator-friendlyplantswereseededbeneathandaroundthepanels,providing habitatforbeesandbutterflieswhilestabilizingthesoilandreducingrunoff.
“It’slandthatmaynotbegrowingwhatit wasgrowingbefore,butit’sgrowingtwonew importantthings,”saidHevenor,ofNexamp. “It’sgrowingacropofcleanenergy,andit’s growingacropofpollinatorvegetationthat’s contributingtothesurroundingcommunities.Andforfarmersnearby,thecollocation ofpollinatorresourcesisreallyimportant.”
Hevenoraddedthedeveloperalsois lookingtolaunchasolargrazingprogram inIllinois,inwhichNexampwillemploylocalfarmerstograzesheeponitssitesrather thanhirealandscapecompanytomow.
“It’sthiskindofdual-purpose,responsiblelandusethatweintheindustryarefiguringouttomaketheseprojectsthatmuch moreimpactfulandeffective,”hesaid.
