Thereleaseoffournewstampsfeaturing colorfulpiñatascoincideswithamonthlong recognitionofHispanicheritageintheU.S. andthestartofanannualfestivalinNew Mexicowherethehandmadepartyfavorites arecrackedopenhourlyandchildrencan learntheartofpastingtogethertheirown creations.
Piñatasaresynonymouswithparties, althoughtheirhistoryislayeredandcanbe tracedto16thcenturytraderoutesbetween LatinAmericaandAsiaandtheeffortsof SpanishmissionariestoconvertIndigenous communitiestoChristianity.Itwasthrough dance,musicandthearts—includingthe makingofpiñatas—thatbiblicalstories werespreadthroughouttheNewWorld.
Piñatasbecameakeypartofcelebrating LasPosadas—thefestivitiesheldeachDecemberinMexicoandotherLatinAmerican countriestomarkthebirthofChrist.Thereligiousoriginsareevidentintheclassicpiñatadesignsoftheseven-pointstarandthe burro,ordonkey,saidCesáreoMoreno,chief curatorattheNationalMuseumofMexican ArtinChicago.
“Thoseearlymissionariesreallywere creativeinthewaysinwhichtheywantedto teachthebiblicalstoriestotheIndigenous people,”Morenosaid.“Nativityscenes,piñatas,posadas—allthosethingsreallyworked well.Theyworkedsowellthattheybecamea partofthepopularcultureofMexico.”
AndtheystillarepartoftheMexican andlargerHispaniccommunities,whether it’sinChicago,SanAntonioorLosAngeles, hesaid.“Culturehasnoborders.Wherever communitygathers,theyhavetheirculture withthem.Theybringitwiththemandso thepiñataisnodifferent,”hesaid.
PiñatasimportedfromMexicolineparts ofOlympicBoulevardinLosAngeles.InNevada,ArizonaandNewMexico,peoplehave turnedtheirkitchentablesandgaragesinto makeshiftpiñatafactories,turningoutcustom shapesforbirthdaypartiesandspecialevents.
InsideCasadePiñatasinAlbuquerque, giantcharactershangfromtheceilingand crowdthewalls.Formorethanhalfhislife, shopownerFranciscoRodríguezhasbeen bringingtolifesuperheroes,dinosaurs,sea creaturesandotheranimalswithstripsof oldnewspaperandasimplepasteofflour andwater.SomecustomerscomefromEl Paso,Texas,andothersfromasfarawayas Michigan.
Rodríguezstaredoutthewindow,watchingtrafficzipbyashewaitedforhisworkto dry.Withresiduestillonhisapronandthe
fansblowing,hecontemplatedthefutureof theindustry,hopingthenextgenerationwill takeaninterestinthecraft.
Hesaidmanyolderpiñataartistshave retiredorcloseduptheirshopsandhe’sconcernedthematerialsneeded—likenewspapers—willbehardertogetasmorethingsgo digital.
It’slikelypiñataswillkeepevolvingas theyhaveoverthecenturies.Nolongerare theymadefromclayollas—usedforhauling waterorstoringfood—thatwouldmakea loudpopwhencracked.Gonearetheshards thatwouldlitterthegroundaschildren scrambledforthetangerines,piecesofsugar caneandcandythatpouredout.
ThestampswereinspiredbythechildhoodmemoriesofgraphicdesignerVictor Meléndez,whogrewupinMexicoCityand remembersspendingdayswithcousinsand otherrelativesmakingpiñatastocelebrate LasPosadas.Hismotheralsowouldmake piñatasforbirthdays.
“That’sadear,dearmemoryofjustfunand happiness,”hetoldTheAssociatedPressashe tookabreakfrompaintingamuralinSeattle. “AndIwantedtoshowalittlebitofthatand payhomagetosomeofthosetraditions.”
Meléndez’sartworkalsoisinfluencedby thecolorsofhomesinMexico—brightpinks anddeepblues,yellowsandoranges.
Thismarksthethirdconsecutiveyearthe U.S.PostalServicehasissuedacollectionof stampsdedicatedtoHispanicculture.PreviouscollectionshighlightedmariachimusicandDayoftheDead.
Designingthestampswascertainlya dreamprojectforMeléndez,whoisknown forhismuralsanddesignworkforStarbucks. He’sbeenalongtimefanofstampwork,havingcollectedwhathedescribedasatonoflittlebitsofpaperjustbecausehelikestheart.
Meléndezhopesthenewstampswilligniteconversationsandencouragepeopleto learnaboutothercultures.Theymightdiscovertheyhavemoreincommon,hesaid.

ButformanyLatinos,whatheaccomplishedbackhomealsoresonates.Hedefied theprejudicesandnarrowexpectationsofhis owncountrytoreachlevelsofpowerwhere fewofhisfellowMexicanAmericansandother Latinosarefound,withoutabandoninghiscultureandcommunity.
Throughmanyindividualrelationships, hehelpedotherLatinosreachsimilarheights, cheeredthemontodosoandsawseveralpenetratethesamelevelsofmostlywhiteAmerican society.Hehadtriedinhislifetimetobethe embodimentoftheideathatthegreatnessof Americaisthesumofitsparts.
“IfevertherewasanAmericanLatino,it wasBillRichardson,”saidJanetMurguía,the presidentandCEOofUnidosUS,thecountry’s largestLatinoadvocacygroup.
MurguíasaidshemetRichardsoninthe late1980s,whenshewasayoungcongressionalstafferforRep.JimSlattery,D-Kan.SlatterywasamemberoftheEnergyandCommerceCommitteealongwithRichardson,who satnexttohim.
Richardson,aNewMexicoDemocratwho waselectedtoCongresseighttimes,wouldtalk toMurguíaandgivehertipsaboutworking withothercongressionalstaffs,“littlethings” thatwereimportantforstayingontopofthe frenzyofCapitolHill,shesaid.HealwayswantedtoseeotherLatinosrise,Murguíasaid.

Whenheannouncedhispresidentialrun in2007,seekingtobethefirstHispanicpresident,hesaidonNBC’s“MeetthePress”that hewasrunningbecause“theAmericanpeople needsomebodywhocanbringthiscountrytogether.”HedroppedoutearlyafterpoorshowingsintheIowacaucusesandtheNewHampshireprimary.
LikemanyLatinos,hestraddledabiculturalworld.Hewasthesonofadescendantof aMayflowerpassenger—hisfather,whowas whiteandofMexicandescent,wasabankexecutive.HismotherwasMexican,andhelivedin Mexicountilhewas13.
RichardsonsaidinaninterviewonC-SPAN’s “BookTV”abouthismemoir,“BetweenTwo Worlds:TheMakingofanAmericanLife,”that hisfather,aU.S.citizen,wassuchapatriotthat hecouldn’tstandhisson’snotbeingborninthe U.S.SohesenthiswifetoCaliforniawhenshe waspregnantwithhimsothere’dbenoquestion abouthisU.S.citizenship.
WhenRichardsonannouncedhiscandidacyforpresidentin2007,becomingtheDemocrats’firstHispanicpresidentialcandidate,he madetheannouncementonthehighlypopular Spanish-languageLosAngelesradioshowof “ElCucuy.”

acandidatethatistryingtogetknownaround thecountry,”hesaidonNPRinaninterviewaftertheannouncement.

Inthe“BookTV”interview,hetoldhost ChuckToddthatwhenhewasinCongress andtookchargeoftheCongressionalHispanic Caucus,hehadsaidhedidn’twanttobea“professionalHispanic,”becausehedidn’twantto be“sandboxed”inCongressononlycivilrights andimmigration.Hehadotherambitionsand interests,hesaid.
Richardsonhadeconomicprivilege—his fatherwasabankexecutive,andheattended aMassachusettsboardingschoolasateen— andhehadalastnamethatwasn’taSpanish surname.Buthesaid,“Lookatme—Ilook Hispanic.Youcan’tavoidthat,”whenhewas askedinthe2007interviewwhetherhebenefitedfromhislastname.
“I’mveryproudofthat.Ijustdon’twantto be:He’saHispanicpolitician;heonlyspeaks fortheHispaniccaucus,”hesaid.
Richardsonhadwantedtoplayprobaseball.Instead,hewasacongressman,energy secretaryandU.S.ambassadortotheUnited Nations.HewastwiceelectedgovernorofNew Mexico,heldseveraluniversityandcorporate positionsandbecamethenation’spremierdiplomat.Hecreatedhisowndiplomaticcenter, theRichardsonCenterforGlobalEngagement.
DomingoGarcia,thepresidentofthe LeagueofUnitedLatinAmericanCitizens,said hemetRichardsonatthe1984DemocraticNationalConvention.Garcia,whowas26atthe time,hadralliedLatinodelegatestowithhold theirvotesforanomineetogettheDemocratic candidatestosupportamnestyforimmigrants.
Richardson,thenacongressman,andSan AntonioMayorHenryCisneroscametofind outwhotheyoungdelegatewaswhowas threateningtomuckuppickinganominee. HesaidRichardsongothimameetingwith HouseSpeakerTipO’NeillandlaterDemocraticnomineeWalterMondale.Richardson advisedGarciahowtowinontheissue,Garciasaid.Congresspassedthe1986amnestybill twoyearslater,andPresidentRonaldReagan signedit.
“Whenweweretryingtogetthingsdonein Washington,whenLatinoswereinourinfant stages[politically],hewouldtellusthisiswho youtalkto,whotocallforthat,hereishowyou getthingsdoneinWashington,”saidGarcia, whowasthechairoftheDemocraticNational Committee’sHispaniccaucusatthetime.
ItwouldbeyearsbeforeanotherLatino wasapresidentialcandidateintheDemocratic campaign.In2020,JuliánCastro,whowasthe secretaryofhousingandurbandevelopment underPresidentBarackObamaandaformer mayorofSanAntonio,ranforthehighestoffice.LikeRichardson,Castrodroppedoutearly,nothavingfoundthewidespreadbackinghe neededtoremaininthecrowdedprimaries. Castro,too,ranintoculturalexpectations, havingtoexplainwhyhewasn’tafluentSpanishspeaker,eventhoughhe,hismotherandhis fatherwerebornintheU.S.Atthesametime, CastrofacedcriticismforusingSpanishinhis campaign.
Castrosaidthatwhiletheyweren’tclose friends,hespoketoRichardsonfromtimeto time,thefirsttimewhenhebecamemayorof SanAntonio,theyoungestofanyofthetop 50Americancities’mayors.Thelasttimewas whenCastroranforpresidentin2020.
CastrosaidRichardsontriedtoencourage him,togethimtostayintherace.Hesaidone ofthepowerfulthingsaboutRichardsonwas thatheaccomplishedsomuchinbothworlds, Latinoandwhite.ThebarriersRichardson overcame,Castrosaid,stillblockmanyLatinos.“Thereistremendouslymoretalentinthe communitythangetstoshowthattalent,”Castrosaid.
