Despitemakingupmorethan19%of theU.S.population,Latinophysiciansonly makeup6%ofthephysicianworkforce,a trendthatCongressmanRaulRuiz,M.D. andCongresswomanYadiraCaraveo,M.D. seektochange.

RuizandCaraveointroducedlegislation todesignateOctober1stasNationalLatino andLatinaPhysicianDay(NLPD).Amidthe growinghealthcareneedsanddisparitiesin theLatinocommunity,oneofthesolutions isimprovingphysicianrepresentationtoensurepatientscanreceivequalitycarefrom physicianswhospeaktheirlanguageand sharetheirculture.

Theproposedlegislationalsoadvocates fortheDepartmentofHealthandHuman Services(HHS)–“aswellasstates,local educationalagencies,schools,andcommunityorganizations–tosupportLatinomedicalstudentsandaspiringmedicalstudents throughincreasedfunding,awareness,and retentionofpre-medicalandmedicalprogramsnationwidewithanemphasisonprogramsgearedtowardsLatinos,”accordingto apressrelease.

InstateslikeCaliforniaandTexas,Latinoscompriseapproximately40%ofthe population,withfuturecensusestimatesprojectinganincreaseto50%bytheyear2050.

DespitethecontinuedgrowthoftheLatino population,theLatinophysicianrateper 100,000Latinosdeclinedfrom135in1980 to105in2010,whilefortheNon-Hispanic White(NHW)population,therateofNHW physiciansincreasedfrom211to315during thesametime,accordingtoareportbythe LatinoPolicyandPoliticsInitiativeatUCLA. Latinophysicianshavehistoricallyfaced challengesrelatedtolonelinessandisolation thatcanoccuratanystageofthemedical training,somenotmakingittograduation.

Accordingto2019datafromtheCenters forDiseaseControlandPrevention,some oftheleadingcausesofdeathamongHispanicsincludecancer,heartdisease,unintentionalinjuries(accidents),diabetes amongothers.Theimplementationofthe AffordableCareActundertheObamaadministrationhasresultedinimprovedaccesstohealthservicesforHispanics,but thecontinuouschallengesremaindueto

limitedculturalsensitivity,healthliteracy, andashortageofHispanichealthcareproviders.Thehealthdisparitiesbecameclear in2020,whentheleadingcauseofdeathfor HispanicswasCOVID-19.

WhilethegapbetweenLatinophysicians andnon-Latinophysiciansisevident,the gapisevenbiggerasLatinaphysiciansmake up2.4percentofthephysicianworkforce. ManyhistoricalrootcausestotheLatina physicianshortage,includeLatinoculture, systemicandstructuralbarriers,andcosts foreducationandtraining.

InawebinarsponsoredbytheCenter fortheStudyofLatinoHealthandCulture in2022,Dr.CarrieL.Byington,aMexican–Americanclinicianandpediatricinfectious diseasespecialistdiscussestheLatinaphysicianshortage.Shesharesthatofthe19 womeninhermedicalclass,shewasoneof the10thatgraduatedandtheonlyLatinain herclass.

“It’salonelyroadwhenyoufindyourself alwaystheonlywomanortheonlyLatina, theonlyonewhocanspeakSpanish,”she said.“Butitissoimportantforourpatients thatwepersist.”

In2016,shebecamethefirstHispanic womantoserveasDeanofaUnitedStates

medicalschooluponherappointmentat TexasA&MUniversity,amongotheraccomplishments.

“Representationmattersanditmatters inleadership.Whenweareinleadershippositions,wecanchangethenarrative,wecan pushtheinstitutioninwaysthattheymay nothaveconsidered,”saidDr.Byingtonin thewebinar.

Inthatwebinarsomesolutionswerein-

troducedbyDr.YohualliB.Anayaincluded increasingfinancialresourcesavailableto supportprospectiveunderrepresentedminorityphysiciansbyexpandingloanrepaymentprogramsandscholarships,funding foradvisingandacademicsupportandso muchmore.

Dr.BarbaraRoblesRamamurthy,is aclearexampleofhowa8-yearfullride scholarshiphelpedhergetthroughmedicalschool.NowsheisatripleboardcertifiedAdult,ChildandForensicPsychiatrist inTexas.SaysthelackofLatinophysicians andsurgeonsisastrongneedinthecommunity.Havingthesupportfromherfamily andmentorssuchasDr.GracielaVillarrealhelpedherkeepgoing.Shecontinuesto workwithnonprofitorganizationsalready involvedwiththeLatinocommunityandis currentlypartoftheMayor’sfitnesscouncilhealthyschoolscommittee.Inthecommitteetheyareabletoprovidesupportand hearfromtheyouthtocreateprogramsto improvenutritionandphysicalactivity.She saystheyarehelpingcreatethenextgenerationofhealthcareleaders.

Dr.RoblesRamamurthysaysthepush forhavingtheofficialrecognitionofNational LatinoorLatinaPhysicianDayisimportant toraiseawarenessamongthepublicofthe lackoflatinosinhealthcareingeneralnot onlyasphysiciansandsurgeons.

“Thepublicneedstoknowthatifthey arehavingtroublefindingoneofusitisnot becausetheyaredoinganythingwrongit’s becausetherearenotmanyofus,”saidDr. RoblesRamamurthy.“Andalsoneedsto promoteawarenesstotheeducatorsthat Holisticreviewisneededtobringmoreus intothefield.”

Askidsheadbacktoschoolthisfall,the weathercools,andwelookaheadtoThanksgivingandtheholidayseason,manyAmericansarepreparingforadifferentfalltradition.

HispanicHeritageMonthisatimetoreflectonandcelebratethehistory,culture,and achievementsofHispanicAmericansfrom everycornerofourcountry.Andlikemany Americans,Hispanicsplayedapivotalrolein thenation’sfightforequalityattheballotbox.

TheVotingRightsAct(VRA)of1965is consideredalandmarkbill,andunderstandablyso.TheVRAiscreditedwithhelpingdismantletheJimCrowpoliciesthroughoutthe AmericanSouth,andusheringinhundredsof candidatesofcolortobetterreflectAmerica.

Manypeoplemaynotknowaboutthe advocacyofHispanics,Latinos,andChicanosinpassingimportantreformsinthe1975 VRAextension.AmonthbeforePresident FordsignedtheupdatedVRA,officersfrom theTexasAlcoholicBeverageCommission brutallybeatfarmerandactivistModestoRodriquezashestoodoutsideabarattempting torecruitChicanostotestifyaboutvotingdiscrimination.

HispanicandLatinoactivistsjoinedforces withBlacklegislators,notablyBarbaraJordan, thefirstBlackwomanelectedfromtheSouth toCongress,topushforprovisionsthatwould breakdownbarriersforSpanish-speakersat theballotbox.Thereforms,passedin1975,requiredstatesandlocalitiestoprovidenon-Englishballotsandvotingmaterialsinstates andlocalitieswheresignificantnumbersof non-EnglishspeakingAmericanslived.

Tenyearsafterthepassageofthe1975VotingRightsActreforms,thenumberofMexican-Americansholdingcountyandmunicipal officesinTexasincreasedfrom353to559.In 1977,CongresscountedjustsevenHispanic members,todaythereare62.

Perhapsnooneembodiestheriseof Latinosinpoliticsmorethanmyfriendand mentor,thelateBillRichardson.Governor RichardsonwasthefirstLatinotorunforthe Democraticnominationforpresident,among manyotherprestigiouspositionsheheldover hiscareer.DuringhistwotermsasNewMexico’sgovernor,hewastheonlyLatinogovernorinthecountry.GovernorRichardson alsospent14yearsservinginCongress,andit wasmyhonortolaterbeelectedtothesame Houseseatin2008.

Today,LatinosandHispanicsarethesecondlargestvotingblocinthecountry.In2020, Latinoscast16.6millionvotesin2020,anin-

creaseof30.9%from2016.The2020election markedthefirsttimeinhistorywhenover50 percentofeligibleLatinoscastavote.Despite thesegains,votersuppressionlaws,aimedat depressingtheHispanicandLatinovote,persistinstatessuchasArizonaandTexas.

Andjustlikein1975,votingrightsactivists oftodayarepushingback.HereinCongress, DemocratsintroducedtheJohnLewisVoting RightsAct,legislationthatwould,amongotherthings,requirejurisdictionswithhighrates ofnon-Englishspeakerstoseekpre-approval fromtheDepartmentofJusticebeforechanginglanguageassistancevotermaterials.

InmyhomestateofNewMexico,lawmakersrecentlypassedtheNewMexicoVoting RightsAct.ThebillwillautomaticallyregistervotersattheMotorVehicleDepartment, allowforsame-dayregistration,mandatetwo ballotdropboxespercounty,andrestorevotingrightsofpreviouslyincarceratedindividualsuponrelease.Ibelieveintheseprovisions andIthinktheywillmakeiteasierforallNew Mexicanstocastaballot.

So,aswespendthismonthcelebrating andreflectingtheenormousachievementsof Hispanics,weshouldrememberindividuals likeModestoRodriguez,whoevenintheface ofseverebrutality,foughtfortherightsofhis community.Weshouldcelebratethegiantsof publicservicelikeBillRichardson,whohas leftbehindagreatlegacyforthenextgenerationofLatinoleaders.Iencourageallthe youngHispanicsandLatinoswhoarefighting forimmigrationreform,racialjustice,anda cleanenergyeconomy,tonotgiveup.Wewill neverliveinatruedemocracyuntileverysingleAmericanisabletomaketheirvoiceheard.

LatinosintheUnitedStateshaveacomplicatedrelationshipwiththeSpanishlanguage.

Whilethelanguagecanbeaunifyingforce andevenacompetitiveadvantage,it’salsoa sourceoftension,particularlyamongimmigrantgenerations,accordingtoareportreleasedWednesdaybythePewResearchCenter.

ThereportfoundthatmostHispanicsin theU.S.speakSpanish,with75percentof adultsreporting“theycancarryonaconversationinSpanish,bothunderstandingand speaking,atleastprettywell.”

Foreign-bornHispanicsaremorelikelyto haveSpanishasafirstlanguage,and93percentofthemspeakit.

Though57percentofU.S.-bornHispanics speakthelanguage,thechildrenandgrandchildrenofimmigrantsreportspeakingSpanishatalesserrate:69percentofsecond-generationLatinoimmigrantsspeakSpanish, andonly34percentofthird-generationimmigrantsspeakthelanguage.

“There’stensionamongLatinos—onthe onehand,theU.S.-bornarenotnecessarily growingupspeakingSpanishliketheirparentsdid,buttheyalsohaveagreatsenseof prideabouttheimportanceoftheSpanish language,”saidMarkHugoLopez,directorof raceandethnicityresearchatPewandoneof theco-authorsofthereport.

AbroadmajorityofLatinossayit’snotnecessarytospeakSpanishtoholdaLatinoidentity:78percentdisagreethatthelanguageand identityarelinked,while21percentsaytheyare.

Foreign-bornLatinosarethemostlikely tolinkidentityandlanguage,andeveninthat group,only34percentsayspeakingSpanishis aprerequisiteforHispanicidentity.

YetmanySpanishspeakersusebilingualismorSpanish-dominanceasacudgelagainst non-Spanishspeakers.

Thesurveyfound54percentofHispanics whodon’tspeakSpanishwellhaveatsome pointbeenshamedbySpanishspeakersfor theirlanguageskills.

generationally,but61percentofcollegegraduateswhodon’tspeakSpanishreportedbeing showedupbytheirpeers.

AmongallLatinossurveyed,40percent saidtheyoftenwitnessedfriendsandfamily mockingorcommentingonthird-parties’use ofthelanguage,29percentsaidtheysometimeswitnessedmocking,and30percent saidtheyrarelyorneverwitnessedlanguage shaming.

Shamingwasmostprevalentamong youngerLatinos—50percentofrespondents aged18-29reportedoftenwitnessingmocking—andamongbilingualLatinos,47percentofwhomreportedwitnessingshaming regularly.

Thosetrendsreflectacomplexwebofmigration,centuries-oldSouthwesternHispanic identity,elitisminLatinAmericaandcompetitionamongLatinAmericannations.

U.S.Latinosarekeywhenitcomesthe nation’sengineeringandtechnologyworkforce,accordingtoanewjointreportfrom theSocietyofHispanicProfessionalEngineers(SHPE)andtheLatinoDonorCollaborative(LDC).

Accordingtothereport,theeconomic contributionstheLatinocommunitymakes totheU.S.areimmense.Thecontributions aresignificantenoughthatifthenational Latinopopulationwereitsowncountry, itwouldhavethefifth-largestGDPinthe world,$3.2trillion,despitecomprising only19.1%oftheU.S.population.

Andalthoughtheymakeuponly18.5% ofthenation’sworkforce,theywerethe causefor73%ofU.S.workforceparticipationgrowthbetween2010-2020,thereport noted.

Additionally,theirpurchasingpower of$3.4trillionin2021comeswith4.7% annualgrowth,whilenon-Latinosexperiencedonly1.9%.Andasbusinessowners, Latinosmadeup50%ofnetnewsmall businessesfrom2007–2017.

ThisisalltosaythattheeconomicimpactoftheU.S.Latinopopulationisnot negligible.AndastheU.S.anticipatesa comingshortageofworkersinengineering andtech–thereareprojectedtobe10.9 millionSTEMjobopeningsby2031–supportingandassistingthispopulationwith theobstaclesintheirpathsmayproveessentialtotheeconomichealthofthecountry,thereportstated.

“Everybody’stalkingabouthowarewe goingtobridgethatgap,”saidDr.DaynaL. Martínez,seniordirectorofresearchand impactatSHPEduringaSep.28panel aboutthereport.“We’rehere.Latinosare heretohelpbridgethatgap....We’reready tobridgethatgap.”

Agrowingdemographic,Latinoscurrentlymakeup25%ofyoungAmericans aged18andunder,accordingtothereport. AndanincreasingpercentageofLatinos seemtobepursuingundergraduateengineeringdegrees,thedemographicseeinga 73.6%increaseinundergradengineering enrollmentratesfrom2010(9.1%)to2021 (15.8%).Forcomparison,Blackstudents andwhitestudentssawdecreasesof8.5% and19.7%,respectively.

“ThemostpopulatedageinLatinos is14yearsold,”saidLDCPresidentand CEOAnaValdezduringthepanel.“Soone ofthereasonswhywedon’thaveparityyet isage.Simplyourkidsaretooyoungtobe engineersyet.Butthey’reheadingthere.”

Duringthesametimeframe,Hispanic studentshaveincreasinglycomprisedmore andmoreoftherecipientsofundergraduateengineeringdegrees,witha94.3%rise from7%to13.6%.Onthegraduatelevel, Latinostudentswere9.4%ofengineering

master’sdegreerecipientsin2021–from 4.2%in2003–and7.5%ofengineering doctoraterecipients.

ProjectionssaythatLatinostudentswill reachparityinengineeringenrollmentby 2035,Martínezsaid.

Despitethesegains,Latinostudents continuetofaceseveralhurdlesduring theiracademicandcareerpursuits,suchas insufficientfinancialliteracy,careerplanning,andfinancialassistance.

“Undergraduatesaremostconcerned withscholarshipopportunities,financial literacy,andpayingfortheireducation,” surveyconductorsreportedaboutthefinancialneedsofLatinostudents.“Graduatestudents’needsarefocusedonfinancingtheireducationandfinancialsupport forconferencetravel.Professionalsare mostlyfocusedonfinancialliteracyand professionalsingraduateschoolrequirefinancingfortheircontinuededucation.”

ThepotentialofLatinosinSTEMfields ishinderedbytheseobstacles,SHPEInterimCEOMiguelAlemañysaidduringthe panel.

“Hispanics[cometothiscountry]to workandtobettertheirlives,”Alemañy said.“Andtheonlyreasonthey’renotrepresentedinhighnumbersinSTEMisbecausetherearebarriers.”

Oneissuehighlightedinthereportwas theshortageofLatinomentorstoencourage studentstopursueSTEMfields.Havingrole modelsandin-classrepresentationalsomattersagoodbit,theresearcherswrote.

CitingtheNationalAllianceonMental Illness(NAMI),thereportauthorsalso notedthatmorethanhalfofLatinoswith seriousmentalillness–amongyoungU.S. Latinoadultsaged18–25–receivenotreatment,likelyduetosocial,cultural,andfinancialissues.Only35.1%ofU.S.Latino adultswithmentalillnessreceivetreatment eachyear,anoticeablegapfromthenationalaverage,46.2%.

“Addressingthisrequiresculturallysensitive,earlyinterventionsinvolvingfamilies andcommunitiesandeducationaleffortsto improvementalhealthaccessandawarenesswithintheU.S.Latinocommunity,”the reportsuggested.

Thereportconcludeswithanumber ofcallstoactions,directedtowardsnot justhigheredandgovernmentalbodies, butalsotoLatinosandcorporateentities. Amongthesesuggestionswerecallsfor corporationstoimplementinclusivehiring practicesanddiversityinleadership;anda needforhigheredtorecruitLatinofaculty inengineeringandtech.

“Encourageresearchandscholarshipon U.S.Latinoissuesinengineeringandtechnologyfieldsthatadvanceknowledgeand understandingofHispanicexperiences, contributions,andchallenges,”thereport noted.

MexicanarchitectFridaEscobedohas beentappedtodesignthenewModernand contemporaryartwingattheMetropolitan MuseumofArt.

Escobedo,42,willbetaskedwithadding an80,000-square-footextensiontothemuseum’sFifthAvenuebuilding,aprestigious, $500millionprojectthathasbeeninthe worksforyears.Sheplanstoemphasize“the interconnectednessofspaceandtimeand suggestanon-chronologicalnarrative,”accordingtothemuseum’sannouncement.

“Thenewwingwillbeavibrant,exhilaratingspacethatmeetstheMet’scurrent andfutureneedswhilepromotingalively representationandreevaluationoftheartof the20thand21stcenturiesinthecontextof 5,000yearsofarthistory,”saidMetdirector MaxHolleininastatement.

Updatingthemodernandcontemporarygalleries,thecurrentiterationsofwhich wereinauguratedin1987,haslongbeena priorityforthemuseum.A$600millionadditionintendedtobecompletedintimefor theMet’s150thanniversaryin2020wasdelayedin2017.ThentheMetsuffereda$150 millionshortfallduringthepandemic,seeminglycomplicatingrenovationplansfurther (althoughpresidentandC.E.O.Daniel Weisssaidatthetimethathewas“notconcerned”aboutfindingtheadditionalfunding fortheproject).
